SOMETHING I ENJOY DOING IS taking common, everyday expressions

and looking at them from a Buddhist

point of view. One that popped into

my head recently is “Expect the Worst,

Hope for the Best.” Seems like sound

advice, but how does it look from a

Buddhist perspective?

To me, it looks very Buddhist,

on the surface at least. If we look at

the Four Noble Truths, for example,

the Buddhist doctrine that “Life is

Suff ering” found in the First Noble

Truth can appear pessimistic, while the

Third Noble Truth which states that

suff ering can be removed shows an

optimistic alternative. This dichotomy

of pessimism coupled with optimism

can also be seen as the distinction

between Samsara and Nirvana, an

example from Pure Land Buddhism

being the expression “abandon the

defi led and aspire for the pure.”

But is the fi rst part, “expect the

worst,” just too pessimistic? On the

one hand, Buddhism can seem very

pessimistic, and yet it also recognizes

that in many ways our reality is strongly

DIANE TSUCHIDA WAS A GUESTat our  last meet.  She presented a

slide show of former internees whom

she had interviewed. There were

many. Diane is a freelance writer

and digital marketer residing in  San

Francisco, CA. She has written on the

representations of mixed race Asian

American women and conducted

interviews with some of the top Asian

American women chefs. Her work has

appeared in the Village Voice, the

Center for Asian American Media and

the forthcoming Beiging of America

series.  She is the creator of Tessaku

(Iron Fence/Barbed Wire), a project

that collects stories from Japanese

Americans who experienced life in the

internment camps.

For those interested in seeing

and reading some of her interviews

please go to “DiscoverNikkei.Org”.

Discover Nikkei is a project of the

Japanese American National Museum

made possible through the generous

support of the Nippon Foundation.

Diane did interview some of the

Momiji Kai members.  Interestingly,

within our Momiji Kai, not everyone

was incarcerated.  Some relocated

to “safe” states, some were caught

as they visited Japan so ended up

spending the  time during the war in

Japan, some were in the service and

one person was living in Hiroshima

at the time.  All of us living through

World War II experienced diff erent

lives in diff erent locations.

Our next meet will be held on

Thursday May 4, 2017. We do hope to

see you all on that date.

JUNE 20173

Jr. YBA News BY KELSEY HIROTA

HELLO EVERYONE, AND WELCOME

to this month’s Jr. YBA News! Last

month I was extremely busy, and

could not get an article out in time;

this month we will get to recap what

you missed while I was gone as well

as what’s happening this month. With

that, on to the news!

In March, YBA members Glenn

Kamita and Takeo Taga led the

lesson for the Dharma School, and

Sydney Wong and Mia Li chaired

service. Martha Castro served as

a representative for the Jr. YBA at

Ohigan Service on March 19th. On

March 18th, members headed to the

Jr. YBA Coast District to attend the

Coast District Conference at Mountain

View, where young Buddhists from

across California met, mingled, and

attended workshops about leadership

and Buddhism. Thank you so much to

Mrs. Tamura-Li and Mrs. Masamori

for chaperoning and driving, we all

appreciated it!

In April, we showcased our “I’m a

Link” video edited by Mia Li, starring

a life-pondering Grant Kamita, as

well as members of the Jr. YBA and

the greater Oakland Buddhist Church

describing what being a link in the

Golden Chain of Love means to them.

Rachel Hirota and Leila Neishi chaired

service on April 16th.

On April 22nd, many members

volunteered at the REACH Track Meet,

a track-and-fi eld meet for young

people with disabilities. On April

30th, Binh Liang and Grant Kamita

chaired Sunday service.

This month, we held our annual

Parent’s Day Breakfast on May 14th,

chaired by Sydney Wong and Leila

and Sami Neishi. Thank you so much

to the families of the members who

chaired, as well as the parents who

helped the Parent’s Day Breakfast

be such a success. We all appreciate

our parents very much for helping

us throughout our lives, despite

*occasional* confl icts. Additionally,

thank you to everyone who came to

the breakfast event (meaning that

you woke up even earlier than usual

on your weekend) in order to support

us--we appreciate you all!

Later in the month on May 27-

28th, we will be attending the Bay

District Volleyball Tournament, for

which we have been practicing since

April. We will also be hosting the

following Saturday Night Social.

Thank you in advance to every person

who attributes to this huge eff ort

to run the weekend smoothly; from

parents organizing the pickup and

setup and cleanup of food to parents

and church members who help

prepare the church for the social, all

of us from the Jr. YBA fully appreciate

you for what you do for us.

Next month, look for news about

graduating seniors, YBA retreats, and

results from the volleyball tournament!

Thank you all for reading, and I will

return next month to deliver more Jr.

YBA News.!

Dharma School News BY MAYA LAWRENCE

HANAMATSURI IS SUCH A beautiful service. Thank you to Michael

Endo who decorated our Lumbini

Garden with fl owers, to all the Sangha

members who brought potted plants

and to the students who brought their

special stuff ed animals to welcome

the Baby Buddha! And it is a time

when the Dharma School Students

get to put on a little skit. Our skit this

year was acting out “Have you fi lled a

bucket today?” Thank you to all the

students who courageously went up

on the stage, acted the parts of Mom,

Dad, Grandpa, Grandma, bus driver,

teacher, and Bucket Filler and Bucket

Dipper!! And thank you to our stage

hands, who fi lled an emptied buckets

in the background! The Dharma School

students distributed origami hearts

containing “kindness” notes to all the

Sangha. We wanted to fi ll everyone’s

“bucket” with kindness. We hope that

everyone will remember to be kind

and gentle to all living things.

On April 21 and 22, the Federation

of Dharma School Teachers 66th

Conference was held in Fresno at the

Family Dharma Center. Their theme

was “Music: A Path to the Dharma.”

Rev. Peter Hata was the key note

speaker, who used lyrics and musical

study as a way to teach the Dharma

to us and to students. We were then

entertained by the Fresno Ukulele

group and by Gordon Ah Tye, who

wrote “I’m a Link in the Golden

Chain.” I was so happy to see some

good friends at the conference, too.

Janet Umezu and Bishop Umezu

were also there!! Sadly, this was the

last conference that Central District

will host. The District felt that they

no longer had the enough teachers

to host another conference. The next

Federation Dharma School Teachers

League Conference will be April 27-

29, 2018, hosted by Bay District at the

Crowne Plaza Hotel in Foster City.

The Dharma School would like to

thank our very generous donors:

Michael Endo to celebrate his

birthday (which is April 8th!)

Expect the Worst, Hope for the BestCONTINUED FROM FRONT PAGE

we expect the worst, it can often seem

like that’s how things turn out! But

what if the way things have turned out

is actually neutral? Since we are already

expecting the worst, we interpret what

has happened negatively, whereas if we

had a more positive attitude we might

be able to see things in a diff erent light.

One of the nice things about the

internet is that it is easy to look things

up, so I looked up this expression. On

an initial Google search, the origin of

this phrase is the comedian Mel Brooks!

It is found in the lyrics of a song in the

fi lm “The Twelve Chairs” (which I have

never seen) – for example: “Hope for

the best, expect the worst – Some drink

champagne, some die of thirst – No

way of knowing which way it’s going –

Hope for the best, expect the worst!”

But you should never blindly

accept the fi rst results you get on

Google – keep digging! I found a

modifi ed version: “I am prepared for

the worst but hope for the best” from

a book by Benjamin Disraeli from 1833.

I like this quote better, or at least I feel

like it fi ts Buddhism better. Buddha

wants us to live our lives as best we

can, to try and see things as they really

are and to try and treat others with

kindness and compassion. There is

also an acknowledgement that things

very often do not go the way we want.

I really do believe that Buddhism

is fundamentally optimistic, at the

same time recognizing that our life in

Samsara can be very diffi cult. Rather

than expect the worst, Buddha wants us

to be fl exible and realistic, able to deal

with any situation, whether it is going

the way we want or not. Sometimes

we are able to deal with it on our own,

other times we need to depend on

friends or family or even people we

don’t know. Whatever happens, know

that Amida Buddha accepts you as you

are, encouraging us to be prepared for

and able to deal with the worst, with

the wish that things turn out for the

best!
