Journals Week 5, Term 2
“Mindful and happy...And peaceful.” - Harper
We have been exploring how we can use our five senses to be mindful. On Monday we explored how we can tune in to
listen to the different sounds we hear when the rain hits the ELC roof. It was suggested by one of the children that we could
do a mindful tasting. On Wednesday we each took a sultana and carefully studied the texture and smell before we gently put
it in our mouths.
How does it feel?
Lexi: Squishy.
Isobel: It feels bumpy.
How does it smell?
Clara: Like a sultana.
Gigi: It smells sweet.
Henry: It smells like grapes.
Olivia: It smells like sugar.
How does it taste?
Chloe: All the juice spilled out.
We reflected on how we feel during and after our mindful sessions.
Felix: It (my breath) goes all the way down to my toes and up my body and into my brain.
Chloe: Nice and still. And it makes me feel happy.
Lexi: It makes me feel good.
Harper: Mindful and happy.
Thomas: I feel calm, happy and quiet.
Harper: And peaceful.
Felix: Peaceful, calm, happy and sensible.
What is sensible?
Alexandra: You are so beautiful.
Isobel: I think that means clever.
Chloe: Really good and being quiet and patting.
Harper: And listening.
Thomas: On TV I heard something that said ‘calm, safe and sensible.’
What makes you feel calm, safe and sensible?
Felix: When I lie down.

Sound scapes.
Over the past 2 weeks the children have been working with Julia and Richard to create puppets which later
will be used in a performance. To add depth to the puppet show the children are developing a sound scape. In our
music class with Ms. George we have been experimenting with different instruments to determine which sound
would suit certain aspects of our underwater sea story.
Puppet progress This week the children have finished making the frames for the puppets.
They are now working on adding finer details.
Billie, Aiden and William are currently
working together to make a puppet theatre.

Butterflies
The children have been learning many different skills from their experience with puppeteers Richard
and Julia. The children have been experimenting with different materials and how to connect materials to
make 3D objects.

LEARNING – Outcome 4: Children are confident and involved learners.
Children transfer and adapt what they have learnt from one context to another.

Roses
Painting from observation involves interaction between seeing and reasoning, feeling and
memory. Each person ‘sees’ differently, each chooses different places to draw. This invites
children to look closely at things and encourages them to make more detailed drawings than
they do when drawing from memory. It can also lead to joyful discoveries.
