In the manner God designed… “One who is slack in his work is brother to one who destroys.” Proverbs 18:9 As with many proverbs, the above proverb leaves us with a rather clear description of how we are to live. There is very little room for misunderstanding, yet it seems as if that’s when time needs to be taken to evaluate what we really know. It’s the “easy proverb” that gets overlooked at times, and this may an example of such proverb. First, the proverb uses the phrase “he who is slack in his work.” This indicates that there is work being done. There is a responsibility (work) for each of us. That “work” may take on a different look for every person, but we should each do the “work” for which we are responsible. Secondly, we should not be “slack” in that work. If we are going to do work, we ought to do the work correctly, with quality work. There is no room for poor workmanship, either in quality or timeliness. This is especially true regarding the work of the Lord. How often do we take for granted the opportunities given to us by God? He lays out the “perfect” work for us, yet we procrastinate or dub the work as too time consuming, beneath us, or maybe boring. I don’t know, put whatever excuse you want to, none of them really sound good. Third, the one that does poor work is related to the one that destroys. To understand this comparison, we must first understand the type of person that “destroys.” This type of person actively causes destruction. This is not the type of person that is simply responsible for neglect, but actively breaks things, causes chaos, tears apart relationships, etc. Therefore, this proverb is placing the person who slacks in their job on equal playing ground with the person who actively destroys. OUCH! Let that sink in for a moment. Let’s see how this fits. A person who is lazy (slack in work) would be looking for short cuts, which may make things that fall apart easy; destruction ensues. There is the connection, destruction occurs because the lazy person “purposefully” chose to take a shortcut, which led to destruction. We have a choice when fulfilling our responsibilities. We can: 1) not do them, 2) complete them poorly, OR 3) complete them in the manner God designed. You choose! In His Service, Bro. Grant
