North Shore United Methodist Church May 2020 “Standing with Our Community” During the pandemic shutdown of our building, the church has continued to look for ways to make an impact in our surrounding community. I wish to highlight three ways we have accomplished this together during the past 4-6 weeks. One way has been our wildly successful “matching grant” fundraiser for A Just Harvest Soup Kitchen and Family Promise. To date, we have raised $6,500! By the end of April, when we stop the fundraiser, that figure may climb even higher! Please see the graph to the right, which demonstrates the original matching grant contributed by Alex Kaplan, what we anticipated receiving, and what we received. These funds are serving in a big way to help both nonprofits keep offering their services to marginalized populations in a season of overall decreased revenue. Congregation Hakafa also supported this fundraiser, along with the Rotary Club of Glencoe, and a variety of donors from social media. Lisa Goodale recently suggested that our church place a banner outside of the church building with a memorable Scripture passage to help those passing by on the street (and those who see it on social media) feel encouraged during these uncertain times. Marjorie Kemp worked up the design and sent off the banner for printing. Cherie Abuls and her sister graciously came by the church to put it up on April 23. The photo circulates widely on social media and is seen each day by the thousands of drivers who pass by each month. We will leave it up until the end of the shelter-in-place order. Finally, Rotary Club of Glencoe recently voted to donate all of its Tuesday lunches to the first responders of the Village of Glencoe until we resume our in-person meetings. Members of Glencoe Public Safety will pick up boxed lunches from The Grand food store on Tuesdays. Included there will be a letter explaining the purpose of the donation, sent with the first food pick-up, and featuring the logos of the many local organizations which comprise Glencoe’s Rotary chapter, including our church’s logo! Please refer to page 7 to view a copy of the letter. I thank all members of NSUMC for how we are together, shining the light of Christ into the darkness of our present circumstance. Prayers of blessing, strength, and endurance for each one of you, and all of those impacted by the pandemic. Grace & peace Scott S. Himel, Senior Pastor The Church Chimes

Rummage Sale 2020 September 26, 2020

8:30 AM to 1 PM

The 2020 rummage sale will take place the last Saturday in September. A social distancing rummage sorting environment, using Barbee Hall and the Skylight Room on the Second Floor, has been set up and will be ready for use in the future – stay tuned. Rev. Barb is busy preparing the first floor of the church, reorganizing and sorting all the closets and cupboards. The Housewares Department housed in one of the classrooms will be ready for upcoming sorting and set up. The classroom we use for Christian Education is getting a facelift, and it has been fun preparing for our first time together with our children and youth after the crisis.

A reminder that eGiving is Now Available Even thru the shutdown, the church continues to incur fixed costs. Paying staff salaries, building expenses, etc. must continue. EGIVING is now available via the church's website and by texting (847) 999-7039 with the amount you wish to contribute. Keep in mind, though, that you can go on to mail checks to the church as always. Thank you for your repeated generous support of the church's vital ministries.

Worship with us online during the weeks ahead! You can find a link to the Sunday worship recording via one of the three following methods at or shortly before the start time of the event:

1. The homepage of our church’s website: northshoreumc.com 2. Via a link emailed to you (join the email list via a form at the bottom of our homepage) 3. Via a post found on our church’s Facebook Page.

Please think of supporting local restaurants in this time of distancing. We want to especially give An Apple A Day (AAAD) our continued patronage. NSUMC has had a very close relationship with AAAD and its owner, Barb Lepman, who remains to donate food in support of A Just Harvest soup kitchen. We hope that all local businesses can continue to employ their workers and provide services and goods as we weather this storm. https://www.anappleadaycatering.com/ or 847-835-2620

Aldersgate Day – May 24

One of the districts of the City of London is named Aldersgate. It was named after one of the gates of the ancient Roman wall, built in the 2nd or 3rd centuries. The gate also gave its name to Aldersgate Street within that ward.

Twenty-eight Aldersgate Street is the approximate location of what was a Moravian church. On May 24, 1738, while at that church, John Wesley experienced a profound religious incident (assurance of salvation), leading to his severance with the Moravians a year later and to the founding of the Methodist Society of England. (UMC.org).

This Aldersgate experience was crucial for John Wesley's life and became a touchstone for the Wesley movement.

Over the years, May 24 has become an observance by the UMC. A service containing some of the Bible readings which Wesley may have heard, as well as suggested hymns and readings for this occasion, form the liturgy for the Aldersgate Sunday service performed on that day or the Sunday nearest to it. This material appears on the UMC Discipleship Ministries’ website.

Our condolences to Judy Phillips and family on the sudden passing

of her husband

NSUMC Notes of happiness, love, and continued hope in new life

***************************** Congratulations

Nancy and John Haynor will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on May 30, 2020.

They met while John was a member of the 5th Army Band, Fort Sheridan, Illinois, and Nancy was a graduate student at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois.

They were married by a chaplain at Emory Chapel on an Army base near Würzburg, Germany, John’s location in 1970. When they were married in German, John was serving as a bandsman

in the third infantry division (Marne division). We wish them a happy 50th anniversary. May God’s Blessings continue to support them.

Mother’s Day

fter years of reporting on the origins of the Mother’s Day holiday, it is safe to assume that most of the readers of The Chimes newsletter know many of the details of the holiday.

The US population is familiar with the Mother’s Day celebrations taking place on the second Sunday in May. However, not everyone may know that other countries differ. For example, Argentina celebrates Mother’s Day on the second Sunday in October. France holds festivities on the last Sunday in May. In Norway, the holiday occurs the second Sunday in February. In Lebanon, celebrations happen on the first day of the Northern hemisphere spring equinox, i.e., March 19, 20, or 21 (although the festival happens primarily on March 21). The emotions between mother and child are the foundation for the celebration of Mother’s Day. In the United States, many people are aware that the origin of Mother’s Day celebrations in this country comes from the late 19th century. Anna Jarvis, founder of the holiday in the US, desired to honor her mother with a single white Carnation (her mother’s favorite flower) and a handwritten note expressing great honor, devotion, and respect. However, the original sensitive idea has been commercialized to extremes by marketers and other moneymakers. What once was an elegant demonstration of love soon developed into a sappy, expensive exhibition. Anna, herself, was very dissatisfied with what the day had become. She rebelled against consumerism and is known to have said, “I wish I had never invented this day.” Statistics on American expenditure indicate that for the 2020 Mother’s Day holiday, people will spend $2.6 billion to purchase flowers, $4.6 billion for jewelry, and $813 million in greeting cards. Monetary quotes for restaurants and entertainment are not available as of this moment.

Origin of the holiday: The Greek civilization holds the earliest account of a festival somewhat similar to the current celebrations of Mother’s Day. The Greeks used to hold an annual spring event in honor of the mythological goddess Rhea, deemed the mother of Gods and strongly associated with the goddess Cybele, herself closely associated with motherhood. The Romans held a similar spring festival to motherhood. They were known for dedicating celebrations to Magna Mater (great mother) their version of the Greek motherhood goddess Cybele, mentioned above. Christianity provided the final link in the creation of the powerful and vital status of motherhood in society. The ultimate mother-figure in Western civilization is Mary, mother of Jesus. A personality not only highly revered in religious life, but one that has been the subject of priceless works of art and musical masterpieces over the centuries. Resistance against today’s consumerism is a moot point. It is almost a norm for society to go overboard with sentimental displays of emotion these days. Therefore, it is essential to keep in mind the original intent for the day – honor, respect, and admiration for mothers.

22 April 2020

Dear Glencoe Public Safety,

We the members of Rotary Club of Glencoe wish to express our heartfelt thanks for what you all are doing to support our community during these uncertain times. Each of you are making personal sacrifices to honor the responsibilities of your posts. Please know that this does not go unnoticed by the broader community.

At present, our club is not meeting in person due to the pandemic. Usually when we meet, we enjoy a lunch provided by The Grand.

As an expression of thanks and appreciation for the members of Glencoe Public Safety, our Rotary Club has decided to donate our weekly Tuesday lunches to you all until it is feasible for us to reconvene in-person meetings.

Should there be other ways our club can support Glencoe Public Safety, please contact our Club President, Bill Hansen, at [email protected] or (847) 835-5111.

In lieu of a signature, please find below the logos of the many local organizations which comprise our Rotary Club chapter. All our best!
