“The Rotary Wheel” Rotary Club of Kampala Vol. 6 Issue 01 Thursday 7th July, 2016 Welcome to the New Rotary Year with all that comes with it such as a “new” management team, “new” goals, “new” work plan etc. I thank you for honouring me to lead the Management Team. I do not take your call to serve for granted. I promise to execute my responsibilities diligently with your support. Thank you for the lovely installation cer- emony. Credit goes to PE Fred and his team and to all who gave generously. I thank IPP Edward and his Team for steering us through the past Rotary year. I learnt a lot about Rotary during the past year and realized that there is still a lot to learn. I am glad I have a Team of very experienced and supportive colleagues who are ready to see that the work of the Club is ex- ecuted efficiently working collectively. During this Rotary year I will lead the Club Man- agement Team on behalf of the Club focusing on three major areas: (i) Uplifting the status of Ro- tary Club of Kampala, (ii) The Rotary Hospital and (iii) establishing synergistic linkages with Ro- tary Clubs in Uganda to enable us fulfil our call to serve humanity. There will be subtle differences in the way we (the Team) will be carrying out our responsibilities. Team Leaders will actually lead in their areas of responsibility instead of waiting for instructions from the President. We will try as much as possible to involve Club members in de- cision-making through consultations and seeking guidance from outside the Management Team. We will keep Club members informed of what will be happening with their projects and any other key activities. I, and the whole management team, welcomes suggestions on how we can improve all aspects of our Club. We are ready to receive your comments. If we do something really good: complement us; if we fail to do what we should have done: let us know constructively. Be proud of your Club and take that pride personally. Let us all roll up our sleeves and serve humanity Stephen K. Lwanga President 2016/17 President’s Message

A message from incoming chair -Club Administration

Christine Magala

Fellow Rotarians I am deeply honored to become the Rotary Chair- Club Administration for the RCOK2016/17.

This club has an extremely proud history being the Mother Club and I hope to continue the excellent work and strong foundation of my predecessor Shem Nnaggenda.

When PP Jimmy Serugo asked me to join Rotary 5 years ago I thought that this would be a great avenue for me to give back to the community and to meet new people with like minds. Certainly I had no intention of one day becoming a Chair person for the Club administration. - It just wasn’t on my radar.

Just to let you know, l am still work in progress, there is a lot to learn and I ask for continued support throughout the year.

In that respect I would particularly like to congratulate the Club Administration Committee Members below for this year’s Administrative standing committees:

a. Deputy Club Administration - Esther Oworb. Finance Officer – Rtn. Diana Ninsiima Kibuukac. Secretary -Rtn. Jackie Ayuya- Mukasa & Rtn. Winnie Karungi Sewavad. PR Officer – Rtn. Shem Nnaggendae. Attendance Officer -Rtn. Robert Mutaawe

The Club Administration Committee shall put emphasis this Rotary year 2016-17 on three areas:

1. Timely Payment of Rotary dues2. Improvement of Club member fellowship attendance and

3. Club Member participation in Rotary activities.4. Provision of quality information about Rotary and promote the Club’s service projects

and activities

I appreciate that Rotarians are Volunteers, so l will treasure in the committee’s good will, team spirit, love for service above self, diligence and resilience to increase club effectiveness as we execute the Rotary mandate of serving Humanity.

Much as I have tremendous confidence in the Club Administration Team, we shall rely on a lot of people to get things done differently this year.

I wish you a great year of Rotary Serving Humanity, forbetter friendship and fellowship.

RI PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE - July 2016Today, we look ahead toward a Rotary year that may one day be known as the great-est in our history: the year that sees the world’s last case of polio. Wild poliovirus caused only 74 cases of polio in 2015, all of them in Afghanistan and Pakistan. As we continue to work tirelessly toward our goal of eradication, we must also look beyond it: preparing to leverage our success into even greater successes to come.

It is tremendously important to Rotary’s future that our role in the eradication of polio be recognized. The more we are known for what we’ve achieved, the more we’ll be able to attract the partners, the funding, and, most important, the members to achieve even more. We’re working hard at RI headquarters to be sure that Rotary gets that recognition. But it can’t all happen in Evanston. We need you to get the word out through your clubs and in your communities about what Rotary is and what we do. We need to be sure that our clubs are ready for the moment when polio is finally eradicated – so that when people who want to do good see that Rotary is a place where they can change the world, every Rotary club is ready to give them that opportunity.

We know that if we want to see Rotary Serv-ing Humanity even better in the years ahead, we’ll need more willing hands, more caring hearts, and more bright minds to move our work forward. We’ll need clubs that are flex-ible, so that Rotary service will be attractive to younger members, recent retirees, and working people. We’ll need to seek out new partnerships, opening ourselves more to col-laborative relationships with other organiza-tions.

Looking ahead, we also see a clear need to prioritize continuity in our leadership. We in Rotary are all playing on the same team, working toward the same goals. If we want to reach those goals together, we all have to move in the same direction – together.

Every day that you serve in Rotary, you have the opportunity to change lives. Everything you do matters; every good work makes the world better for us all. In this new Rotary year, we all have a new chance to change the world for the better, through Rotary Serving Humanity.

ROTARY SERVING HUMANITY

Rotary has been many things, to many people, in the last 111 years. Through Rotary, our members have found friends, community, and a sense of purpose; we’ve forged connections, advanced our careers, and had incredible experiences we couldn’t have had anywhere else. Every week, in more than 34,000 clubs around the world, Rotarians come together to talk, laugh, and share ideas. But above all, we come together for one, overriding goal: service.

Service to humanity has been the cornerstone of Rotary since its earliest days, and has been its main purpose ever since. I believe that there is no better path to meaningful service today than Rotary membership; and no organization better placed to make a real and positive difference in our world. No other organization so effectively brings together committed, capable professionals in a wide variety of fields, and enables them to achieve ambitious goals. Through Rotary, we have the capacity, the network, and the knowledge to change the world: the only limits are the ones we place on ourselves.

Today, our organization is at a critical point: a historic juncture that will determine, in so many ways, what comes next. Together, we have provided extraordinary service to our world; tomorrow, our world will depend on us to do even more. Now is the time to capitalize on our success: as we complete the eradication of polio, and catapult Rotary forward, with determination and enthusiasm, to be an even greater force for good in the world.

Of the many lessons polio eradication has taught us, one of the most important is also one of the simplest: that if we want to bring all of Rotary forward, we’ve all got to be moving in the same direction. Continuity of leadership, at the club, district, and RI level, is the only way we will flourish, and achieve our full potential. It is not enough simply to bring in new members and form new clubs: our goal is not more Rotarians, but more Rotarians who can achieve more good Rotary work, and will become the Rotary leaders of tomorrow.

Near the end of his life, reflecting on the path that brought him to Rotary, Paul Harris wrote: “Individual effort may be turned to individual needs, but combined effort should be dedicated to the service of mankind. The power of combined effort knows no limitation.” He could hardly have imagined then that one day, more than 1.2 million Rotarians would be combining their efforts, and, through our Rotary Foundation, their resources, to serve humanity together. And we can only imagine what great deeds Paul Harris would have expected of such a Rotary! It is our responsibility to achieve those deeds; as it is our privilege to carry forth the tradition of Rotary Serving Humanity.

Sincerely, John Germ President, Rotary International, 2016-17

PRESIDENTIAL THEME & CITATION

HOW TO QUALIFY

To qualify for the Presidential Citation, clubs must complete two mandatory activities and additional activities in several categories. Most activities will be verified automatically through RI’s data. But some will be verified only by the information you enter in Rotary Club Central.

To more accurately capture your club’s achievements, for the first time ever, clubs will have the entire Rotary year — from 1 July 2016 to 30 June 2017 — to achieve the Presidential Citation goals.

District governors will be able to track the progress of all of their clubs online, and I’m asking them to follow up with you regularly and support you in achieving these goals

DISTRICT CITATIONI will also offer a special citation to districts that:

Have at least 51 percent of clubs earn the Presidential Citation

Contribute at least 20 percent of their District Designated Fund to PolioPlus

Increase Annual Fund giving by 5 percent over last year’s total

Achieve a 3 percent increase in membership

Thank you in advance for your efforts this year to show Rotary Serving Humanity.
