Fellow Rotarians,

Thank God it’s March! Yet another splendid month to celebrate our achievements and serve humanity. What a joy for me to usher you into our Water & Sanitation month.

In March every year, we celebrate and lay emphasis on Water and Sanitation as one of Rotary’s areas of focus. Clean water and sanita-tion is a human right. When people, especially children, have access to clean water, sanitation, and hygiene, they lead healthier and more suc-cessful lives.

Rightly put, we don’t just build wells and walk away. As Rotarians, we integrate water, sanita-tion, and hygiene into education projects. When children learn about disease transmission and practice good hygiene, they miss less school. They also take those lessons home to their fami-lies, which expands our impact.

As I went about my project visits, one thing was common, the need for clean water and sanita-tion among our communities. Sadly, I found that there are communities whose cultures and beliefs don’t allow them to use latrines. The need for clean water was however displayed in all communities especially those living in semi arid areas. It’s unfortunate that from our part of the world, women and children still walk scores of kilometers in search of water. I am however thrilled to say that Rotary is doing something

THE DISTRICT GOVERNOR

Today, with more than 240,000 women in our clubs, Rotary is stronger than ever… At the club level, we need men and women of all backgrounds, ages, cultures, and professions; internationally, … The better our clubs reflect their communities, the better we can serve them. Our diversity is our strength.

about it. Let us keep doing the good work of providing water to our people. We can take advantage of our giving to the foundation and apply for more grants towards clean water provision.

I am persuaded that we, Rotarians, must do more. We need to roll up our sleeves and literally act. As we dig those much needed wells, let us involve the local communities and also educate them for project sustainability. This way, we shall not only save lives from disease but as well change an entire generation!

The month of February was very eventful for us as a District. We began with Presidents Elect Training (PETS)and District Team Training Seminars (DTTS) at the Tulip and Heron Court Hotels- Nairobi respectively. The Events were well attended with very beneficial training offered by our very seasoned Rotarians led by DGE Peter Mbui. I commend the DGE and his team for the well organized trainings. great impact. I am forever grateful to the organizing team and Rotary clubs for

Our 38th Sunshine rally happened on the 25st February with overwhelming sup-port from clubs around Nairobi and its environs. Rotarians brought smiles to the faces of nearly 5000 children with special needs. Many thanks to those who gave donations ranging from wheelchairs to food, gift items, transport, time, love and care. Special thanks to the host club, RC Madaraka, the organizing committee led by Rtn. Edward Habwe.

As usual, my classmates did a great job. Thank you Presidents!

In this month, March, I urge Rotarians to join hands for the Centennial medical camps set in Nairobi, Coast & Eastern regions.

Our end of year is fast approaching and as is our norm we culminate the year by celebrating our achievements with a District Conference & Assembly. My team and I have done all that is in our power to offer you the best conference. Am thankful to all who have registered, as well as those planning to register. If you are still in the planning stage, kindly do register soonest possible. Registering in good time will help us plan for you in time and offer you the best.

3. Supporting programs that enhance communities’ awareness of the benefits of safe water, sanitation and hygiene;

4. Supporting studies for career-minded professionals related to water and sanitation.

Parameters for Eligibility TRF considers activities targeting the following to be within the scope of the water and sanitation area of focus:

2. Measurable – sponsors can select standard measures for their area of focus from the Monitoring and Evalu-ation Toolkit or use their own measures to show the good results of their work;

3. Community driven – designed by the host community based upon the needs they have identified;

4. Aligned with an area of focus – as defined in the policy documents.

Areas of Focus Policy Statements (April 2016) 6

Elements of Successful Scholarships Global grants support graduate-level scholarships for career-minded professionals. TRF considers the following when evaluating global grant scholarship applications:

1. The applicant’s previous work experience in the field of water and sanitation;

District Team Training & Seminar 20174th February 2017, Golden Tulips, Westlands – Nairobi.

(By Betty Karuu, PA to DG R. Owela)

Every year, Rotary District leaders convene for training at the District Team Training Seminar (DTTS) for the upcoming Rotary year.

This year is no different as enthused trainers encouraged the 2017/2018 District leaders to take lead in meeting the world’s most pressing needs. Led by District Governor Elect, Peter Mbui, the team promise to give their all to take Rotary District 9212 to the next level.

Among other goals for the year 2017/2018, top on the list is Mem-bership and The Rotary Foundation (TRF) giving. The Governor Elect passionately urged the leaders to offer quality leadership by example. He resounded a new call to the leaders on publicizing quality messages through social media owing to the fact that the messages actually say what Rotary is to the general public.

The District Governor Elect Peter Mbui also unveiled the Rotary year theme in style. In the beautiful ambience of the Golden Tulip Hotel situ-ated in the leafy town of Westlands, Nairobi, the mood was all ‘Making a Difference’ as is the theme for the Rotary Year 2017/2018 unveiled by Rotary President Elect Ian HS Riseley early this year at San Diego, Califonia, USA.

“You and I can truly make a difference. We have what it takes. I am sure that we shall offer this Rotary District nothing but the best as we serve humanity,” said the DGE Peter with much hope.

Prior to the District Leaders training, countless man hours of meet-ings and planning trips took place. No stone was left unturned as the DG Elect fore planned for a flawless event. With the help if the sitting District Governor, Richard Omwela, the District council of Governors and other key leaders, multiple consultative meetings took place regarding the future of the District among other issues.

Also in attendance were DG Richard Omwela, PDGs and other seasoned Rotarians who offered their time and wisdom in the training.

Presidents Elect Training Seminar 2017- D9212Heron Portico Hotel -Nairobi

(By Betty Karuu, PA to DG R. Omwela)

18th February 2017: This year the Presidents Elect Training & Seminars took place at the Heron Portico Hotel in Nairobi Milimani area with nearly 150 participants. Each year, District Governors Elect train their incoming club presidents and club officials in preparation to take up Rotary clubs leadership.

The training was presided over by District Governor Elect Peter Mbui assisted by the sitting District Governor Richard Omwela among other seasoned Rotarians.

The Governor Elect launched the 2017-18 Rotary theme that was an-nounced by RI President Ian HS Reseley in San Diego, California, USA during the Rotary International Assembly. He also took the Club leaders through his 2017/18 District 9212 Strategic Plan. Top of his agenda iws Membership growth and retention and The Rotary Foundation giving. He urged the club leaders to ensure that clubs remain relevant and in-teresting as a means to enhance member retention. The Governor was also keen on the image clubs and Rotarians relay on social media and urged that leaders lead their clubs by example.

“You, Club leaders are the backbone of this district. Your commitment and devotion in 2017/18 shall determine how far we take Rotary and the District in the years to come. It all depends on us,” DGE Peter Mbui asserted.

He also applauded Past District leaderships for their commitment and strength in ensuring the growth and continuity of the District. Other areas addressed in his plan were Rotary Image and Service Projects in the District.

The training and planning was culminated with awarding of certificates to participating club presidents as is a requirement for Rotary presidency every year.

A Library of hope at Majaoni Primary SchoolRotary Club of Mombasa Downtown has become a blessing for the Maja-oni community and hopes to burst its doors beyond Majaoni boundaries. The Rotary Club seeks to entrench a reading culture among students and offer mentorship to improve school performance through establishment of a strong library program.

The tremendous transformation achieved thus far in Majaoni School is amazing. Like never before, students now sit in a well furnished library for both their assignments and extra reading. It’s no doubt; one can now ap-preciate the power of words on a paper making all the difference.

The Majaoni Primary school and the community can now enjoy the peace that comes with hope for a brighter future. One can underestimate the power of hope but not in the face Majaoni children. As you watch the chil-dren press to enter the library after their class lessons is a fascination sight to behold. The power of giving in Rotary. One dollar brings lots of hope with a future in Rotary.

“It is evident that schools with a strong library program outperform those without such programs. My teachers always said many times that ‘f you can’t be SMART, Do SMART things!’ That means listening to teachers and assist others to learn!” said President Lugogo of the Rotary Club of Mom-basa Downtown during the opening of the school library.

As is the culture of Rotary, Rotary Club of Downtown intends to bring transformation through literacy. Rotarians have rolled up their sleeves and we are up to the task.

Many thanks to all Rotarians and well wishers who have lend a hand in the putting together of the Majaoni school library. Your contribution shall go a long way in shaping the future if the school kids as well as the community. All these, Because we Believe, in Rotary!

Rotary Mariners of East AfricaThe International Yachting Fellowship of Rotarians (the “IYFR”) is the oldest and largest of the Rotary Fellowships. It began in 1947 and has 110 fleets, with over 3,300 members in 30+ countries. The recently chartered IYFR Fleets in Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda known as the Rotary Mariners of East Africa (“RMEA”) are the first African Fleets.

RMEA’s mandate include the promotion of Boating Safety in sub-Saharan Africa and presentations on boating safety given to Rotary Clubs in Benin, Tanzania, Rwanda and Kenya. Clubs across East Africa have assisted in logistics of identidication & disbursement of jackets to intended users and sensitization of local authorities.

The impetus of the Lifejackets for Life Project began with the drowning of 3 schoolchildren who drowned on their way to school in Mida Creek in Kenya when the dugout canoe that ferried the children overturned. This coupled with the fact that over 85% of the 5000 lives that are lost to drowning each year on Lake Victoria alone could have been prevented if the victims had been wearing lifejackets, let to taking this project further.

To date, over 400 lives have been saved. In demonstrating that “Charity Begins at Home,” the Kenyan Maritime Authority recently donated lifejackets given to Rotary Club of Naivasha to the fishermen of Lake Naivasha and the Coast Sea Survival Association, Kilifi, Kenya.

The Mariners are also known as the “Fun, Family part of Rotary.” The Ke-nyan Fleet has a water-based fellowship over 6 weeks which include dolphin safaris, luncheons, pool and beach parties with plans for whale-watching safaris, visits to tropical fish exporters and other fun activities that involve the whole family.

Today, the Kenyan Fleet has over 40 members and their families. Rotarians, their spouses and Rotaractors can join IYFR.

The Basics of Writing Short ArticlesBy Betty Karuu, PA to DG R. Omwela

Is writing a club project article giving you trouble? You may feel like its too much to do especially when asked to submit an article for the DG’s E- Magazine every month. I am sure every club would like to be highlighted in this widely read publication.

The principle idea of a project article is to create awareness, educate and sometimes entertain. A good article should have all components. The following guidelines will help you come up with an article.

Follow guidelines. An editor/ publisher gives guidelines on the format of an article. The DG E-magazine editor, requires an article to be 300 words accompanied by 4-5 high resolution action photos. So each time you are at a project ask yourself, whats the story? And whats the action? Take photos with this in mind. Photos should be simply story telling.

Write what you KnowYou can only write what you know. If you have been involved in a Club Project, write about it.

Structure An article should always be catchy. The subject title should always be enticing for the reader. Write the most important information first. Some people only read the first paragraph. Ensure that in the first paragraph the reader understands what the story is about, propelling him/ her to read more. For a 300 word article, you can have 100 words per paragraph forming the sections.

Think About your Target AudienceThe DG E-magazine is read by Rotarians and non-Rotarians worldwide. Therefore write in business but catchy language. Avoid jargon and acronyms as the readers are varied. Do not write “PDG”, instead write Past District Governor.

FinallyOnce your article is done, proof read it severally for any grammatical errors and/or spelling mistakes. Always let somebody else read it for any editions or endorsement. Ensure that your article reaches the editor by 15th of every month for publication.

Dear Rotarians,

A district conference brings together all club members and their families-not just club officers and committee members-to enjoy fellowship and inspiration speak-ers and discuss matters that make one’s Rotary membership more meaningful.

Every person who attends a district conference finds that being a Rotarian becomes even more rewarding because of the new experiences, insights, and ac-quaintances developed at the conference. Those who attend a conference enjoy going back year after year.

Every Rotary district has a conference annually. These meetings are considered so important that the RI president selects a knowledgeable Rotarian as personal representative to attend and address each one. The program always includes sev-eral outstanding entertainment features, interesting discussion and inspirational programs.

One of the added benefits of attending a district conference is the opportunity to become better acquitted with members of one’s own club in an informal setting. Lasting friendship grow from relationships built at the district conference.

This Rotary Year, You are welcome to join hundreds of Rotarins at the Tom Mboya Labour College for a life changing District Conference & Assembly from 20th to 23rd April 2017!

My team and I are doing everything humanly possible to give you the best DCA- Kisumu experience. Our seasoned, handpicked array of world class guest speak-ers is ready to bolt us to the next level during the plenary sessions.
