Learning• An ACTIVE process

Page 7: AP Biology Discussion Notes Wednesday 11/19/2014.

Metacognition

• Thinking about our thinking

Page 8: AP Biology Discussion Notes Wednesday 11/19/2014.

Learning

• I feel like I am able to learn from the reading assignments or to gather questions to ask.

How do you read? • What do you do while reading? • Do you summarize each point? • How do you decide what is important?• Do you do the end of section questions?• Do you read the summaries at the end?• Turn to 555 • Do you check your answers?

Questions

Page 24: AP Biology Discussion Notes Wednesday 11/19/2014.

Goal

• Be able to describe and identify the

stages of the cell cycle (in eukaryotes)

Page 25: AP Biology Discussion Notes Wednesday 11/19/2014.

Cell Division

• Before the control center ( )divides it must replicate its most important feature, the _______ which is housed in the nucleus of eukaryotes.

Page 26: AP Biology Discussion Notes Wednesday 11/19/2014.

Cell Cycle• Interphase –

where a cell spends the majority of its life (over 90%)

Page 27: AP Biology Discussion Notes Wednesday 11/19/2014.

Cell Cycle• Purpose of the cell cycle

to reproduce, repair, & replace cells.

Page 28: AP Biology Discussion Notes Wednesday 11/19/2014.

Cell Cycle

• Mitosis – can be divided into 5 basic parts

• Prophase• Metaphase• Anaphase• Telophase

– Cytokinesis

Page 30: AP Biology Discussion Notes Wednesday 11/19/2014.

5 Phases of the cell cycle1. First growth (G1) phase cell grows rapidly and carries out its routine functions.

2. Synthesis (S) phase A cell’s DNA is copied

3. Second growth (G2) phase prepares for the nucleus to divide.

4. Mitosis the nucleus of a cell is divided into two

5. Cytokinesis the cytoplasm divides

Page 31: AP Biology Discussion Notes Wednesday 11/19/2014.

Mitosis – Cell Division (Cell Reproduction)

Mitosis PhasesInterphase – This is where a cell spends a majority of its life.

Prophase –Centrioles and Spindle Fibers start to appear

Chromosomes become visible

Nuclear Membrane disappears

Page 34: AP Biology Discussion Notes Wednesday 11/19/2014.

Metaphase –

Chromosomes line up in the middle of the cell

(“meta” means middle)

Centrioles

Spindle Fibers

Chromosomes

Page 35: AP Biology Discussion Notes Wednesday 11/19/2014.

Anaphase –

Spindle fibers separate the chromatids and pull them to opposite ends of the cell.

Centriole

Spindle Fibers

Chromatids

Page 36: AP Biology Discussion Notes Wednesday 11/19/2014.

Telophase –

Cell membrane starts to pinch in the middle

Two new nuclei start to form in each new cell

Chromosomes disappear into the nucleus

Cytokinesis – the dividing up of the cytoplasm

Chromosomes Nuclei

Cell Membrane
