With property prices going up, it is now common for buyers and renters to forgo houses

with a backyard in favour of small spaces in the cities and suburbs. Affordability is one

main reason people are shifting from the terrace house toward a space in an apartment

block. People also prefer to live close to their work instead of commuting for several

hours each day.

The changing lifestyle expectation is another reason Australians are choosing to live in

apartments. Houses usually require extensive upkeep, especially those with larger and

wider yards. Furthermore, people live differently now, eating out more and having a

social life typically away from the home.

The Sociable Australians

Some believe that there is a good chance

occupants will socialise or go out more if

they lived in a unit than if they lived in a

house. As they do not have to stay home

on the weekend to fix the gate or do some

mowing, there is a greater chance that

they will be up for more weekends away.

More Reasons to Go Out

An apartment or a smaller property requires less maintenance, which means that there

is more time to meet friends or see movies. Higher density living also gives people a

chance to do more socialising without traveling too far. Renting or owning an apartment

in the city also gives them access to good public transport, so just one or no vehicle will

do.

Organised and Better Living

Having a smaller home also means

organised living or refraining from buying

large items that would not fit in the home.

Clothes that homeowners have not worn

for several years are less likely to survive

in a small unit’s wardrobe than they might

in a house’s extra room. Apartment living

is pushing Australians to shop smaller and

hoard less to maintain organisation in their

chosen home.

Shifting towards higher density or

apartment living changes how Australians

are living today. This includes the way

they shop, how often they travel, including

their optional expenses.
