Fuad is a Director of SLR and is responsible for SLR’s Infrastructure Sector in Africa. He has expertise in a wide range of environmental disciplines, including Environmental and Social Impact Assessments, Environmental Management Programmes, Environmental Compliance Monitoring & Auditing and Stakeholder Engagement.

He has been responsible for management and quality control of environmental assessments dealing with a number of highly complex and controversial projects, such as the proposed toll roads on the national routes in the Western Cape and Eastern Cape/KwaZulu-Natal provinces of South Africa and in Mauritius. He also has extensive experience in the environmental assessment, monitoring and auditing of projects related to railway facilities, landfill sites, wastewater treatment facilities, and water and sewage pipelines.

SLR was appointed to provide public participation services as part of the construction phase of the project. Fuad is responsible for project management, documentation review and overall quality control.

SANRAL - Construction of the greenfield sections of the N2 Wild Coast Toll Highway, Eastern Cape (2016-ongoing)

Further to undertaking the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for the proposed N2 Wild Coast Toll Highway, SLR was appointed to provide environmental management services for construction of the greenfield sections of the project. Fuad’s role is to serve as Project Environmental Manager, responsible for overseeing and managing the overall environmental monitoring and auditing of the construction phase against the relevant conditions and specifications of the project Record of Decision, approved Environmental Management Programme (EMP) and associated environmental authorisations, permits and licences.

Combined Basic Assessment process for the upgrading of two existing R61 road sections on the South Coast of KwaZulu-Natal. Fuad is responsible for project management, documentation review and overall quality control.

Scoping Study and Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (based on the Equator Principles) for the various components of the proposed Mauritius Road Decongestion Programme. The work was undertaken in partnership with an in-country partner, Enviro-Consult Ltd. Fuad served as Project Leader responsible for project management, documentation review and overall quality control.

SANRAL - N2 Wild Coast Toll Highway, Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal (2005-2010)

Scoping Study and EIA for the 560 km N2 Wild Coast Toll Highway. The project involves upgrading of various sections of the existing N2 and R61 between East London and Durban, as a well as construction of a 90 km greenfield section through the northern-eastern part of the Eastern Cape. The greenfield section includes the construction of nine new river bridges. Fuad’s role included project management, review of 13 specialist reports and report writing.

EMP and EMPR for the proposed upgrading of the Brooklands Water Treatment Plant Access Road, including development of proposed borrow pits. Fuad was the project consultant responsible for the management of specialists and report writing.

Protea Parkways Consortium and SANRAL - N1/N2 Winelands Toll Highway, Western Cape (2000-2003)

EIA for the N1/N2 Winelands Toll Highway. The proposed project includes upgrading of various sections of the N1 and N2 national roads outside Cape Town, grade separated interchanges, a bypass around Somerset West and construction of various toll plazas. Fuad’s role involved management of specialists and joint writing of reports.

Scoping Study for the route location, road reserve and road access for Onverwacht Road in Strand. Fuad was the project consultant responsible for report writing.

The Diagnostic Assessments involved working with the refinery leadership team to assess how they are managing safety in the field. Safety Leadership Training involved highly motivational training sessions for leaders, which create a strong imperative for action by focusing on the absolute criticality of their role in directing the behaviours of their people. Hazard Recognition and Effective Interventions in the Field for Leaders involved sessions with leaders to provide strong motivation at all levels to spend more time in the field and to transform the value they (and the organisation) derive from the time they spend there.
