Arista Networks 7500E Switch and Linecard Optical Cabling Guide

This cabling applications guide will assist you with the design of a fiber optic cabling system for Arista Networks 7500E series data center switches. The 7500E series switches and line cards feature software configurable 10/40/100G channels over the same interface port. The 7500E is offered in two chassis ver-sions. The DCS-7504 is a 4 slot, 7U chassis that accepts 4 linecards and the DCS-7508 is an 8 slot, 11U chassis that accepts 8 linecards. Arista offers 4 different linecard variations:

Arista DCS-7500E-12DM-LC is a 12 port 100GbE SR10 MXP linecard with embedded optics. The ports are 24f MTP’s that can be configured as 12 x 10G, 4 x 40G, or 1 x 100G channels. A fully utilized MXP linecard requires 288 fibers.

Arista DCS-7500E-36Q-LC is a 36 port QSFP+ 40G linecard for 10/40G. The fiber ports are 12f MTP’s that can be configured as 1 x 40G or 4 x 10G when used with 10/40G transition modules. A fully utilized linecard requires 288 fibers.

Arista DCS-7500E-72S-LC is a 48 port SFP+ for 1/10GbE and 2 port 100GbE SR10 MXP linecard. The fiber ports are 48 LC duplex and 2 x 24f MTP. The 2 MXP ports can be configured as 10/40/100G ports. A fully utilized linecard requires 144 fibers.

Arista DCS-7500E-48S-LC is a 48 port SFP+ linecard for wire-speed 1/10GbE. The fiber ports are 48 LC duplex. A fully utilized linecard requires 96 fibers.

These Arista 7500E series are typically deployed in a two tier “leaf-spline” configuration with 7500E “spline” switches connected to 7050S and/or 7150S series “leaf” switches.

100G Switch to Switch Links

With 100GbE links between 7500E switches with DCS-7500E-12DM-LC or DCS-7500E-72S-LC linecards, a 24f MTP jumper cable is run directly beween the MXP ports on the switch linecards. This ca-bling is best for inter-switch links when both switches are in close proximity, usually within the same row of cabinets.

In larger networks where high fiber count MTP trunks are deployed, a structured cabling approach pro-vides a scaleable and quickly reconfigured network. Inter-connection points between permanently installed trunks make changes and additions as easy as changing or adding jumpers. The trunks in these examples are 24f with 12f MTP legs, but can be higher counts as long they are increments of 24 with 12f MTP legs.

40G Spline to Leaf Links

All MXP ports on 7500E series linecards can be internally switch to transmit 40GbE to leaf switches or 7500E linecards with QFSP+ ports. The Switch interface is 24f MTP, MXP port to 12f MTP QFSP+ port on Arista 7050S-64 switches (4x 40GbE+ ports) and 7150S-64 switches(4x 40GbE+ ports).

In larger data centers where distances are greater and fiber counts are higher and switches are more widely deployed, a structured cabling system provides a much better approach to cable management, utilization, and organization. Trunks are run between inter-connect points near the switches. From there, transition modules, and jumpers complete the connection to switches. Different length jumpers can be used to con-nect to individual 40GbE ports located on same or different Leaf switches.

Figure 3: 40G Directly Connected Switches

With 40GbE directly connected links between 7500E switches with DCS-7500E-12CM-LC or MXP ports on DCS-7500E-72S-LC linecards and QFSP+ ports on 7050S-64 and/or 7150S-64 switches, a 24f MTP to 3 x 8f transition cable is run directly beween the MXP ports on the switch linecards and 3 QFSP+ ports on the leaf switches. This cabling is best for inter-switch links when both switches are in close proximity, usually within the same row of cabinets and all 40GbE ports are on the same leaf switch.

Figure 5: 40G Port Linked Switches

In between directly connected and structured inter-connect links are inter-connect port linked switches. They are suited to small and mid sized installations where Leaf switches are clustered in close proximity to the Spline switch. A 24f MTP to 2 x 12f MTP transition cable is run to a transition module, central to the Leaf switches. From this inter-connect point, jumpers are run to 40GbE ports on Leaf switches. This approach is best suited when connecting to multiple leaf switches in the same row, but in the different cabinets than the 7500E switch.

10G Spline to Leaf Links

The MXP ports on 7500E series linecards can also be internally switch to transmit 10GbE to leaf switches or 7500E linecards with SFP+ ports. The switch interface is 24f MTP, MXP port to duplex LC SFP+ ports on Arista 7050S-52, 7050S-64, 7150S-24, 7150S-52 and 7150S-64 switches. Unlike 40/100G cabling sys-tems, directly connected switches are not practical. Structured cabling and port cabling are the considered approaches. Figure 6 shows a structured cabling approach and is best in medium and large scale network installations. 10GbE configured MXP ports are inter-connected to 24f trunks with 12f MTP legs and 12f MTP to LC transition modules, centrally located to the Leaf switches. Duplex LC jumpers complete the 10GbE link to SFP+ ports on the Leaf switch. Various length jumpers can be used to reach SFP+ ports on multiple switches in different cabinets.

Figure 7: 10G Port Linked Switches

When the 7500E switch is in proximity to the 10GbE Leaf switches and the cable runs are short, as may be the case in smaller network installation, a structured cabling port linked approach can be used. A 24f MTP to 2 x 12f MTP transition cable is run to a MTP to LC transition module central the leaf switches. From this inter-connect point, jumpers are run to 10GbE ports on Leaf switches.

40G Links for QSFP+ Linecard Ports

A DCS-7500E-36Q-LC is a 36 port QSFP+ 10/40G switchable linecard. It requires a different cabling scheme than the MXP ports in our previous cabling examples. The fiber ports are 12f MTP’s that can be configured as 1 x 40G or 4 x 10G ports. A fully utilized linecard requires 288 fibers. This linecard can use the same structured cabling trunks(24f with 12f MTP legs) as the MXP configured linecard ports. Only the inter-connect portion of the link is different. 40G, 2x3 transition modules inter-connect trunks and switches with 12f MTP jumpers.

Figure 9: 40G QSFP+ Directly Connected Switches

In smaller network installations or when switches are located in close proximity say for instance when switches are located within the same row of cabinets, directly connected links are an option. 12f MTP jump-ers are run directly between switches.

QSFP+ ports on DCS-7500E-36Q-LC linecards configured as 10GbE links require a transition from 12f MTP QSFP+ at the 7500E switch to duplex LC SFP+ at the leaf switch. An MTP to LC 10GbE module and duplex LC jumpers replace the 40GbE transition module and 12f MTP jumpers at the leaf switch.
