Responding to the challenges of aform of production that benefitsfarmers, consumers and society

An institute fundedand managed by farmers

ARVALIS - Institut du végétal is an applied agriculturalresearch organisation dedicated to arable crops. Createdby farmers and the agricultural sectors that fund it, it helpsto improve the production of quality grain as well as rawfood and non-food materials for national and internationalmarkets.

Being totally independent, ARVALIS dedicates its expertiseto the emergence of production systems that combineeconomic competiveness with adapting to marketrequirements and protecting the environment.Technological innovation is a crucial tool used to helpproducers and agribusinesses to respond to societalchallenges

Its board comprises 36 farmers and also involves publicauthority representatives. Its funding comes for the mostpart from professional sources (professional bodies,sectorial agreements). The rest is provided by publicfunding for research and by the sale of services (training,trials for third parties, expert assessments, etc.)

ARVALIS - Institut du végétal’s 27 sites are spreadthroughout France and involve a total of 400 persons,including 300 engineers and technicians. Reflecting itsscientific excellence, its activity is accredited by severalorganisations.

Increasing production

ARVALIS’s work focuses on cereals, maize, sorghum, potatoes, forage crops, flax and tobacco. At farm level, thosecrops are rotated within production systems that include agronomically and environmentally useful cover crops.These are also part of ARVALIS’s research work. Each crop and its corresponding industry sector is studied bythe Institute in every aspect: technical practices, quality, production costs, organisation and markets.

Responding toenvironmental challenges

ARVALIS studies crops at every level – genes, plants,field, farm, production area – and draws on nume-rous fields of expertise and partnerships. The scopeof its research includes limiting environmental im-pacts and promoting sustainable use of resources(soil, energy, fertiliser, water). This helps to developeffective and sustainable agricultural practices.

Producing for allavailable markets

From field to processing, each production system isassessed and documented in order to ensure a levelof physicochemical, nutritional, technological andsafety quality meeting market requirements. TheInstitute focuses on all markets: human consump-tion, animal nutrition and non-food uses ofbio-resources.

Agro- ecology Digitaltechnologies Bio-economy

ARVALIS is conducting long-term experiments in order tofully understand and properly analyse biological processesthat are at the heart of agronomic research. For instance, ithas been studying the impact of ploughing and directdrilling on soil and crops for the past 40 years. Since 2013,the Institute has been concentrating on implementing ahigh-speed phenotyping platform (PhénoField®) which,linked to genomics, is helping to characterise varieties thatare better suited to climate change. Set over an even longerterm, its research into chemical ecology is identifyingnatural regulation phenomena between plants and theiraggressors, in order to develop defence mechanisms thatwould mimic natural processes. Finally, digitally connectedexperimental farms and centres (Digifermes®) set up in2016 in partnership with the IDELE, ITB and Terres Inoviatechnical institutes, will be used as demonstration and testbench facilities for innovative and start-up companies.

Thinking ahead in orderto respond to future challenges

Assessing operationalsolutions

ARVALIS - Institut du végétal is designing and testinginnovative solutions to optimise production factors andcontrol costs:• Assessment of inputs, varieties, plant protection and

nutrition strategies;• Development of cropping techniques designed to limit

the use of chemicals (biocontrol, prophylactic measures,organic methods, etc.) and mineral fertilisers (integrationof legumes etc.);

• Help with choosing equipment, organising labour,optimising productive and environmentally-friendlyproduction systems (both conventional and organic);

• Measure of product quality;• Analysis of production costs in France and in major

producing countries.

Public and private partnerships,French and international projectsIn view of the multiple challenges facing agriculture, ARVALIS must bring together all the competencies able to helpdeliver multiperformance in the different agricultural sectors within its scope. With this aim in mind, it is organisingnumerous partnership agreements with academic research entities, and is putting research agreements in placewith public authorities through ACTA and ACTIA, as well as directly with the technical institutes, advisory anddevelopment bodies, teaching establishments, local government entities and public authorities. ARVALIS is alsoforging robust international partnerships.

Large scale disseminationTechnological progressFarmers are constantly looking for simple, operational andeconomical solutions to manage their farm and produceconsistent quality and quantity. To disseminate its results,ARVALIS utilises all available vectors and informationtechnologies: technical meetings, scientific conferences, fieldevents, publications, the press, the Internet, videos, socialnetworks, digital apps, decision support tools, training, etc.

Promoting solutionswith benefits for all

ARVALIS helps to respond to major societal challenges. Recognisedfor its expertise and practical knowledge, the Institute has gainedlegitimacy and credibility with public authorities and opinionleaders. Its independent expertise is regarded as a reference byscientific leaders, the press, and French and European authorities’working groups. It provides objective data to ministerial andregional missions to inform public decision makers as regards tostandardisation and regulatory strategies.

Finding simple solutionsto complicated issuesAgricultural technicians, as well as techniciansinvolved in the distribution and developmentsectors are farmers’ primary source of information.ARVALIS has established long-term and very closepartnerships with those networks as well as withteaching establishments in order to promote innovationand support changes in practices.
