FROM THE PASTOR PARISH NEWS

www.StAmbrose.us - PAGE 3 April 12, 2015

…”The community of believers was of one heart and mind…With great power, the apostles bore witness to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great favor was accorded them all.” The first reading, from the Acts of the Apostles, is a powerful reflection as they see the hand of God at work in their lives. God united them in one heart and spirit, and strengthened them to carry forth the message and work of Jesus. In these Easter days, reflect on the power of God’s love alive in your life. Take time to notice the Spirit of God’s love strengthening us in doing the work of the Lord. The invitation in these Easter days is, “Come and See…Love is alive.” The earlier followers observed and depended on the unifying love of God. Let us use these days to observe and draw upon the great love God has for us in Christ.

…I was at an ALPHA discussion the other night. I was asking about Easter and one of our senior members acclaimed, “Come and See…love is alive.” As they (and I) reflect on our parish celebration, you could see, hear, and experience (in an overwhelming way) that love of Christ alive in our community. From the beautiful tomb (thank you so much Jim Cartellone) and amazing decorations in the Church and Hall, to the uplifting Music and Song, to the cleanliness and readiness of our campus, to the sixty members who volunteered hours on Holy Saturday to make sure all was ready – clearly – God’s love is alive in our community in the hearts and service of you – our good members.

…This weekend we celebrate the Feast of Divine Mercy – the outpouring of Christ’s compassion, mercy and love upon us. Pope Francis has such a special awareness of Christ’s deep desire to be the well-spring of mercy and compassion in all of our lives. He is calling for a year of reflection on this Divine Mercy starting this fall. I am humbled as I see so many in our community offering such great compassion and care for others – from the Angels on Wheels food for families in moments of need, to the resurrected RIDE program (where we can offer some basic transportation to our elderly and homebound), to the way our bereavement ministry reaches out to families at their time of loss and need. Love is alive in our community through our acts of care and compassion. Let us use this feast to allow God’s mercy and compassion to fill our hearts so we can go home and into our world with the divine mercy of God for others.

…Father McNeil will be leading the Divine Mercy Prayer Service on Sunday at 3 pm. Please join in this time of prayer. Next

weekend, we will be offering the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Aged and Infirm at all the weekend Masses. This is a powerful, sacramental way to offer the tender compassion and care of Christ to all who are declining or struggling with physical or emotional health concerns.

…You are invited to see the renovated Rectory…next weekend!! Thanks to the wonderful work of our volunteers and an extraordinary gift to our parish community. Stop by….check it out….amazing what some paint and carpet will do. Special thanks to Mike Strmac and his company, Universal Windows Direct, for the windows they donated for the rectory. They are also installing a new door in the garage next week. The windows made all the difference this past winter!! Love is alive in the hard work of our B/G volunteers and the goodness of our members.

…By the time you read this, the movable walls in Hilkert Hall will be completely recovered and repaired. This was the goal for our Lent Fish Fry program. God bless this amazing group. They raised over $30,000 to make this happen for our parish. They also put on a GREAT FISH FRY. We had lots of people over the last few weeks that are ‘Fish Fry Hoppers,’ and they ended the season back at Saint Ambrose because it was “the BEST” Fish Fry around. GREAT food….WONDERFUL people, WELCOMING volunteers….GREAT cause….a blessing beyond words. Thank you, one and all.

…In the days before Easter, we received a number of calls from people commenting on how much they appreciated receiving info about Saint Ambrose in a flier delivered to their door. This comes as a gift to our parish thanks to our wonderful and thoughtful member Kevin Ostrowski. It’s a great way to live today’s scriptures and spread the Good News. God bless Kevin and his team for their great help.

…Last weekend we gave out 2,500 copies of “Everybody Needs to Forgive Somebody”. It’s a helpful and easy read on the importance and power of forgiveness. Much to my amazement and delight, we ran out of books. Fear not…there are additional copies now on the bookrack outside the chapel. This book program is a great way to help all of us grow spiritually. Thank you for all you do to help us make this possible.

…Many thanks for your generosity and goodness to our parish during Holy Week and Easter. Your support for the Easter

Flowers, along with the Easter collection, is a great blessing to our parish and allows us to do all the things we do (like the 2,500 books on forgiveness). God bless you. I begin and end each day in prayer for you.

…Our parish is blessed with a wonderful Special Ed Program. It’s 50 years old this year! Amazing – a blessing beyond words! Week after week you see the compassion, love and care of Christ in those who gather on Saturday morning for Special Ed PSR. We are planning a special 50th anniversary celebration on Sunday, April 26, as the 12 noon Mass. Come and celebrate the love of God alive through the great care and compassion of our Special Ed PSR.

…Spring is in the air and summer can’t be far behind. Plans are in motion for our Summer Kickoff Festival. This past week you should have received some information about the festival and the raffle. It’s an important part of having the funds to take care of the capital repairs and needs around our campus. A drive through the parking lot quickly reveals why we need your help and support. You also get to win GREAT prizes. Win a new car, thanks to Brunswick AutoMart, some home improvements by Universal Windows Direct, a vacation (who couldn’t use a few days in the sun), thanks to Encompass the World Travel. You can even win car detailing for a year, thanks to Roger’s Oil Change and Detailing. Mostly, it’s a great way to help support our parish.

…An amazing thing takes place every Friday afternoon – there’s a whole group of adults teaching our students how to knit and crochet. It’s a blessing to watch the ‘art’ passed down from one generation to the next. The kids also love doing it. Special thanks to Sharon Yurik, Becki Scheutzow, April Kacinari, Joyce McCarthy-Reed and Master Teacher Maureen Cavillo for sharing this great gift with our young ones.

…The night before my dad died, in an extraordinary – never did it before – way, he took his prayer blanket from Saint Ambrose to bed with him. Clearly he knew he was going home. More importantly, this gift that our Prayer Shawl and Quilt Ministry made and gave to him was a source of great comfort and peace. What a blessing to blanket others with the care, compassion, prayer and mercy of God. Thank you for all you do for so many in our parish and community to continue the Divine Mercy of God. May you know this mercy and love in your heart on this Divine Mercy Sunday and always.

! Jim and Annie Hoover and their children, Tori, Nick and Leah have called Saint Ambrose home since 2010. Through the years, they have volunteered at the Summer Fes val. Inspired by Saint Ambrose’s involvement with the Brunswick community, Annie encouraged her fitness class to make a Thanksgiving Day dona on to Saint Ambrose. The Hoovers have also gathered friends to support the CYO Night at the Races. Nick has played CYO Sports and Leah is currently running Track for Saint Ambrose.

Both Leah and Nick like learning about their faith through Saint Ambrose PSR. This year, Jim followed God’s call to help with Junior High PSR and is currently a Table Leader for the Monday night 7th/8th grade PSR class, where his son Nick is a student. Leah is in 5th grade and recently enjoyed par cipa ng in the PSR Living Sta ons.

“Volunteering with Junior High PSR has been an extremely worthwhile opportunity. I feel I get as much out of it, if not more than the students...it has helped me strengthen my own rela onship with God. I feel that I have come to have a deeper sense of prayer and inner peace since volunteering and I have no ceably less stress in my life. My colleagues at work have even no ced and ask me about this sense of calm I have developed.” – Jim Hoover

The Hoover family shows us that when you are ac vely involved in our Saint Ambrose Family of God, your family will grow in faith!

Saint Ambrose Parish | 929 Pearl Road, Brunswick, OH 44212 | 330.460.7300

Presented by: Cindy McQuown, Certified Beyond Driving with Dignity Professional

A two hour presentation developed to empower older drivers to make appropriate decisions on the future of their driving career. Adults with Aging Parent Drivers will learn how to help address the issue with tact, compassion, and empathy, so that the older driver’s dignity is never unnecessarily jeopardized.

A Safe Drive Through the Aging Process Open to all

Adult children and Seniors

May 16, 2015 | 11:00am-1:00pm BEYOND DRIVING WITH DIGNITY

RSVP by May 9, to Helen at [email protected] or 330.460.7322

This program has been designed to serve as a valuable tool in helping older drivers and their families make appropriate decisions regarding the future of one’s safe driving career. If the individual is a safe driver, they provide him or her with strategies on how to remain a safe driver as they progress through the aging process.

♦ Do you live away from your loved one and aren’t completely sure of his/her ability to keep driving safely?

♦ Are you unsure of how to address the issue with your loved one?

♦ Do you wish you could find a skilled and experienced professional to help bring calm and stability to what can be a very sensi ve family issue?

The ul mate goal is not to take away driving opportuni es of older drivers, but rather to offer sugges ons on how to recognize and compensate for diminishing skills so that you remain on the roadways as safe drivers.

F C ... MESSAGE

JUNIOR HIGH NEWS

Spring is definitely in the air! Rainy days have returned, flowers are starting to bloom, and during this Easter season we are surrounded by

new life and new beginnings. As our Easter theme points out, love is certainly alive all around us!

This weekend our teens gathered for our annual Spring Retreat at Camp Cheerful, and anytime we’re able to gather with them, it is always a tangible example of love alive in our midst. Spring is a busy time for many of our teens—several are getting ready for school plays, many are active in spring sports, some are gearing up to head to college, our 8th graders are getting ready to start high

school and continue their Confirmation preparation - the list goes on.

While spring is a busy time for so many of our teens, their choice to take time to get away, grow in faith, and build friendships with one another is inspiring. They truly set an example for all of us to center our lives on Christ each and every day—no matter how many other items are on our to-do list or how many commitments we need to maintain.

Please continue to keep our teens in your prayers, especially during these busy spring months as another school year draws to a close—your prayers and support truly make a world of difference!
