This Week in Alpha: Session 2: Why Did Jesus Die?

For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not

perish, but have eternal life. – John 3:16

“After I had studied the Bible for about three months I could have passed an elementary exam on the cross. I understood there  is  one  God  who  could  be  known  in  three  Persons.  I understood Jesus is fully God and fully man and He died on the cross for the sins of the world. But I didn’t understand that I was a sinner. I knew I messed up here and there but I didn’t realize how serious my condition was.

But one evening around this time my wife Carol said, ‘I think it’s time to do something about all that we’ve been learning.’ Then, as I looked on in utter amazement, she knelt down on the floor and started praying.

In  a flash  the  cross made personal  sense  to me. Suddenly,  I knew something I had never known before; I had hurt God’s feelings. He loved me and in His love for me He sent Jesus. But I had turned away from that love; I had shunned it all of my life. I was a sinner, desperately in need of the cross.”

~ John Wimber, Equipping the Saints, Vol 2 No 2, Spring 1988

We  all  know  that  Jesus  died  on  the  cross  for  our  sins,  but why Him? Why did God send His “only begotten Son” (His only  Son who  shares His  divinity)?  Jesus  suffered  and  died because  any  sin  is  an offense  against  a God who  is  eternal; and  reparation  has  to  be  made  by  someone  who  is  eternal. When Jesus became incarnate of the Virgin Mary, He became not only fully God but also fully man, allowing humanity the dignity of cooperating in healing the breach and allowing us to participate in the love of the divine.

But what does that mean for us? It means that ALL sin, whether venial or mortal, is an offense to God. Christ suffered and died for even our smallest sins. We are all “desperately in need of the cross.” By the mercy of God, we can confess and repent from our sins.

In God We Trust: Religious Liberty – Your First Amendment RightDuring these challenging times, there is a critical need to focus  on  defending  our  religious  liberty  as  stated  in  the First Amendment of  the United States Constitution.  In  these highly informative presentations, Bishop David Malloy and Monsignor Eric Barr show us that protection of religious freedom is fundamental for Catholics, as well as people of all faiths.

I invite you to help prepare for the future of St. John Neumann by prayerfully considering a one-time orrecurring gift to our parish endowment funds through our Parish Annual Endowment Drive. The endowmentfunds, managed by The Catholic Foundation, are meant to provide support for our parish and its ministries forfuture generations.

We currently have three funds:

St. John Neumann Capital Endowment Fund provides for future building maintenanceSt. John Neumann Ministries & Programs Endowment Fund provides for future spiritual growthSt. John Neumann Parish Outreach Endowment Fund for future outreach to the poor

As of December 31, 2016 we have $676,443.37 in our endowments.

God has blessed us with abundance in life. Please consider how this abundance can support the future of St.John Neumann and your Catholic faith through planned giving. Gifts can be made from a variety of assets, and can occur during your life or as a bequest in your will or trust.

We work with The Catholic Foundation as our trusted partner because they assure peace of mind that ourendowments are invested in alignment with our Catholic teachings and values and the investments are madeconservatively. You can help us grow the endowments by contributing to them through the annual drive or atany time and in any amount. Your gift is a tangible way to express unending gratitude to God for a lifetime ofblessings. It provides an opportunity to perpetually resource our Catholic faith in our parish and to ourneighborhoods, too.

Yours in Christ,

Father David SizemorePastor, St. John Neumann Catholic Church

What is an endowment? An endowment is a fund that is restricted. Only the interest from the fund can bespent, not the principal that anchors the endowment. Usually, only a portion of the interest or earnings fromthe endowment (typically 5%) are spent on an annual basis in order to assure that the original funds will growover time. The Catholic Foundation and its professionals oversee these endowment funds, investing themoney conservatively in stocks, bonds, and other instruments in line with our Catholic values. Our goal is toreach a threshold of $1,000,000 in the funds in the next few years so that the interest distribution would beabout $50,000 a year, which we will re-invest in the funds until future generations need them, particularly ifour area should fall into decline. Ultimately, our goal is to create an endowment culture, so we will be able tocontinue the Catholic Christian mission for generations to come.
