A Note from the Pastor Fr. Michael Fragoso
I made it back from California. There I celebrated a wedding at the Mission of San Juan Capistrano. It was the seventh of 21 missions founded in Alta California under the direction of St Junípero Serra in 1775. The missions were interdependent and self sufficient: masonry, carpentry, leather tanning, ore smelting, making wine and olive oil, ranching and herding… all these things were done at the missions under the direction of the Franciscans. Fray Junípero came to the New World from Mallorca. Arriving at Vera Cruz he walked the 250 miles to Mexico City. On that trip he was bitten on the leg by an insect, possibly a spider. The wound never healed causing him pain throughout his life. He was put in charge of founding the missions in Alta California from San Diego to Monterey. St Junípero and his companions walked everywhere, sometimes along the coast, wading through water up to the chest at low tide and climbing up cliffs. He did all this to bring Christ to the people. That was his calling, his vocation, to bring Jesus to those who had not heard the Good News. He is the patron of vocations. This weekend is vocations awareness weekend. I’m writing this from St Vincent’s Seminary. Tomorrow our seminarians, Michael Tabernero and Matthew Marinelli will be invested in the Order of Lector by Bishop Zubik of Pittsburg. This is one of the necessary steps toward ordination. God calls each and everyone of us. First he calls us to holiness. Secondly he calls us to married or celibate life. Thirdly he calls us to use our gifts for our benefit, and the benefit of others in whatever occupation we choose. It is for each person to discern, to discover what the Lord is calling him or her to do in each of these three realms in order to fulfill the first one, to be holy. We each are called to help each other in this task by encouraging each other. If you know of any young man or woman who is interested in the priesthood or consecrated life: encourage them. I am always available to talk about it as well as Fr. Jason Pavich our vocations director.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED The Mobile Family Success Center of Middlesex County (MFSC) operated by Catholic Charities, Diocese of Metuchen, is a community-based, family centered program providing support, information, and services to enrich the lives of children and adults by making families and neighborhoods stronger. Our goal is to promote family well- being, link families to community services, empower and support families as a "one-stop" shop that provides wrap-around resources and support for families before finding their selves in crisis. Our programs take place in community centers, libraries, schools and other community locations serving the townships of North Brunswick, East Brunswick, Edison, Sayreville, and Woodbridge. We are looking for volunteers to assist with programs on weeknights; times vary from 4:00 to 7:30 in these five towns. We conduct educational programs, arts and crafts and family based programs. At these programs, we need volunteers to assist with family sign in, assistance with program activities and encourage families to interact with each other.
Volunteers are required to be interviewed and
complete a background check. They are invited to
join Parent Advisory Board to develop programs.
Please consider volunteering with us and help make a
difference in the community. Contact Kendra
Williams at 732-387-1220 for more information.
