    Are you ready for rides and tours?

    Although the threat of snowcancelled a ride the lastweekend of March, Spring ishere. A recent ride through thearboretum showcased bloom-ing Magnolias, Azaleas and

    robins were spotted doingtheir part to making springhappen (also known as thebirds and bees). The Betweenthe Nox series has resumedon Tuesdays, Mary Jo Gerstand Judy Kraemer are leadingeasy rides and the Wednes-day Night Ride from Gasworkscontinues on through the rain(and sometimes hail andsleet). Pages 2 and 3 have allthe details.

    Mid-month is the return of thepotluck SBC meeting at Phin-ney Neighborhood Center onApril 17th. There will be twopresenters to help you withnutrition and to inspire you totake a tour this summer. Seepage 7 for more details on thismonths club meeting.

    Sneaking a peek at May, MaryJo has a tour on May 17 & 18to the Yakima area. For thoseof you who dont know, MaryJo is just as fond of wine asshe is of bicycles. Early reser-vations are essential so go tothe Tours section of the web-site.

    Have you seen all the newSBC jerseys out there? Theylook really sharp and turn a lotof heads. Did you get yours? Ifnot, there will be another orderplaced in July in time for

    RAPSody on August 23 & 24.

    Ride Description: A training ridefrom West Seattle , scheduled forevenings during the spring,summer and fall, 'between thevernal and autumnal equinox'.There are no cue sheets, we

    regroup often at major turns inthe routes, so we not to leavesomeone behind lost in aneighborhood that they maybeunfamiliar with. We do not ridepacelines and we are not a staytogether ride either, however weall do ride at a similar pace andtherefore we do stay togethermost of the time. Most of theriders who ride know the routesand are welcome to go off thefront and have as much fun asthey care to. Be prepared tohandle your minor mechanicalproblems, flat tires etc. Lights arerecommended but not required.We will try to finish before dark.Bring sufficient drinks and extrafood for a two to three hour ride.

    Ride Description:We will ride down the waterfront to Alki to the ferry dock. From there its up thehill (not too steep) with a nice downhill to the trail at Marginal Way and back to thewaterfront. We will stop for lunch midway.

    Saturday, April 26Alefest Bike Ride, Leavenworth, WAThe goal of Alefest Bike Ride is to raise moneyfor cancer research and local charities. Theride will donate $10 of every entry to a cancerresearch lab that studies angiogenesis. Thereare 2 courses to choose from: 25 miles and 50miles (the 75-miler has been cancelled due tosnow).     Sunday, April 27Monster Cookie Ride, Salem, ORIt just sounds good, doesnt it? Both routes (30 and 62 miles) will take riders over backroads toChampoeg State Park and back to Salem. It is generally flat with a few short hills.     RULES TO RIDE BY:

    All riders are expected to obey therules of the road and show properetiquette towards vehicles, othercyclists and pedestrians.

    For example:

    Come to a complete stop at stopsigns, look both ways and proceedwhen safe.

    Stop before, not within or ahead, ofall crosswalks.

    Heed a car back call by calling itforward and riding single file to theright to let cars pass.

    Regroup well away from cars.

    Riders who show flagrant abuse of

    traffic rules will be asked to leavethe ride.

    Read On...

    Please bring ID specifying emergencycontact name and phone number,blood type, and a list of any allergiesand/or specific medical needs.

    All riders under the age of 18 mustbe accompanied by a parent orresponsible adult.

    Please arrive 15 minutes before theride starts to sign in, review the ridemap, and get ready to ride. If youhave any questions about the ride, askthe Ride Leader before the ridebegins.

    Everyone is welcome on rides.

    Ride Pace / Regroup Frequency:

    Leisurely (10-12 mph) / constant

    Social (12-14 mph) / frequent

    Moderate (14-16 mph) / regular

    Brisk (16-18 mph) / occasional

    (Pace refers to the speed on the flats)

    EMERGENCY CONTACTS

    When signing the SBC waiverform, please consider who youdlike to have as an Emergency

    Contact. It is an importantnumber that the ride leaderneeds to have. In case of anaccident, who will take yourbike home? Who will notify

    your loved ones or your boss ofyour whereabouts? Try to

    choose someone who has a cellphone and your house keys.
