Hazardous Waste ManagementWhy do we have a program?
Safety to faculty, staff and students
TxState is a large quantity generator(>2200 lb/month or >2.2 lb/month for acute hazardous, P-listed)
Regulated by Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
“Cradle to Grave” responsibility for waste (from generation to final destruction/disposal)

Waste Generation
Satellite Accumulation Areas
April 2009
Satellite Accumulation Areas (SAA)
A Satellite Accumulation Area is a storage location at or near any point of generation where hazardous wastes initially accumulate.
SAA have a limit on the amount of waste that can be accumulated
Regulation says 55 gallons, Texas State Program says 30 gallons
There are about 40 SAA locations on campus

EHSRM provides you with waste tags and containers Keep lids on the containers when not in use
April 2009
SAA Requirements (cont.)
2. Provide secondary containment for containers (protect floor drains)
April 2009
SAA Requirements (continued)
3. Post Emergency Contact Information
4. Have spill control materials available
April 2009
Empty Containers?
1. What can you do with empty chemical bottles?
2. OK to put them in the trash if:
• The bottle has been rinsed three times (triple rinsed)
• The rinsate is put in one of the waste containers for EHSRM to pick up (OK to combine with aqueous waste)
Empty containers can go to trash
April 2009
Compressed Gas Cylinders
Butane, propane bottles
Spray Paint
Empty if they are at atmospheric pressure. Release all pressure by use or discharge.
OK to then dispose in the dumpster.

How Do SAAs Request Pickups? At the end of the week, EHSRM will e-mail
our contacts at the SAAs to ask if you need a pickup…respond to e-mail
Or you can call our office at 245-3616
Or you can complete and submit a Waste Pickup Request Form on our web site:
http://www.fss.txstate.edu/ehsrm/forms/HazWastePU.html
EHSRM pays for waste disposal
April 2009
Waste CharacterizationWhat happens to your waste once it is
picked up?
We take it to our Central Accumulation Area (CAA)
We conduct field tests for characterization
We assign a Texas Waste Code to the waste label
We store each waste by its waste code
We keep a weekly pickup inventory and running inventory of the waste in the CAA.
April 2009
Waste Characterization
