come closer, i have something to tell you...the King has risen!the King has risen!

Easter fun facts:In the old days pretzels were associated with Easter because the twists of the pretzel were thought to resemble arms crossing in prayer.

The exchange of eggs for Easter dates back to a springtime custom older than Easter itself in which eggs were given as a symbol of rebirth in many cultures.

16 billion jelly beans are made specifically for Easter which is enough to fill a plastic egg the size of a 9-story building

on my mind

Rather young or old, there will be a time in everyone’s life where a tough decision will have to be made. Such a tough decision that you’ll make a statement like Jesus and wonder if there is any way out, around or over so you don’t have to go through it. And even though you are paused at your crossroad of a direction decision you already know which way is the “right way”. O’ you know that choosing that “right” way will lead to people talking, uneasi-ness, longsuffering, sacrafice and even pain yet, you are confident that the purpose of those conflicts are creating you eventhemore for your destiny. So, then your response needs to be like Jesus’ response. He didn’t throw his hands up, retreat and hide. He didn’t even say ‘those bunch of sinners, they don’t deserve this’! No, He simply said, “Nevertheless”. He understood that His process created Him for this. His training started long ago, all the way from the garden leading up to the road to Calvary. The pruning process doesn’t feel good and seems like it will never end, but it’s a process and so then, nevertheless.

“Saying, Father, if thou be wiling remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my

will, but thine be done.”Luke 22:42 kJV

WOOLThe clear favourite for suits, but pick carefully. Go to-wards a super-wool, with a thread count somewhere between 120 and 150. I tend towards 150 as it's often works on both cold and hot days. If you live, however, in more extreme climates you'll need both Winter (200 thread count) and Summer (100 thread count) suits in wool

COTTONCotton can make a beauti-ful suit, but make no mistake it's best only as an informal or fashion suit and, unlike wool, is going to crease like anything. I find it best in co-lours which aren't black or grey, and your preference

should be towards navy and tan colours. It's definitely a spring / summer suit (and is great for weddings and other functions of the season.

LINENSo many men simply don't understand linen, and it's often those of us who have had the luck of a childhood in Europe that may ever truly appreciate it. But a linen suit can be perfect for those hot, humid summer days. Try wearing a cotton or wool suit once the mercury pushes past 30 Celsius / 85 Fahren-heit and you'll see what I mean. Because of its nature, line makes a great summer suit and colours such as whites and creams and particularly suited. One final note on linen: don't be scared of linen's pen-chant for creasing, it's all a part of the fabric's charm.

All across the world, worshippers are raising their voices making the simple, yet profound declaration, “I Give Myself Away So You Can Use Me.” This heart-felt anthem is stirring up a movement of renewed abandon to the cause of Christ. It was penned and first heralded

by William M c D o w e l l . The song is the cry of Wil-liam’s heart and the foun-dation of his worship min-istry.

James Fortune and FIYA is another young group that is quickly climbing the gospel market. More importantly, the term “FIYA” desribes their ministry. From the band to the singers, to the anoiting fire of the Holy Spirit, this group is definitely a cut above the rest.

2011 GOSPEL COMEDY TOUR

15

feature

For over a year now, Steve Harvey has focused his energy on promoting his books ‘Act Like A Lady, Think Like A Man’ and ‘Straight Talk, No Chaser’, maintaining his position as one

of the country’s top morning radio hosts and giv-ing back through his foundation. Earlier this year his name was in the news as his ex-wife gave a tell-all video series on YouTube claiming accu-sations of adultery and details of their divorce in 2005. But now, the comedian is back to his stand-up roots as he em-barks on a comedy tour with a twist. Harvey has joined Grammy Award-winning sing-er Kirk Franklin for their first-ever ‘Steve Harvey and Kirk Franklin Comedy Gospel Tour,’ where Franklin offers up his inspiration songs to people going through tough times, and Harvey gives fans something to laugh about. ”I think that this type of tour for me is long overdue,” the original King of Comedy said. Up first on the list...Hotlanta. And it was definitely on fire! No, not the weath-er, but the event. They were on and poppin! On open-ing night a theater full of folks took in a preview of the upcoming movie Jump-ing the Broom, which is produced by Bishop T.D. Jakes and five others; and is scheduled to hit the big screen Mother’s Day weekend, 2011.Bishop Jakes was in town to conduct a Q & A fol-lowing the screening, which was well received. The movie takes a comical look at a couple heading down the aisle, with mothers-in-laws-to-be played to perfection by Loretta Devine and Angela Bassett.Without giving to much away, the movie is a must-see! The other thriller in the Peach was the Kirk Franklin/Steve Harvey opening of the Com-

edy/Gospel Tour. Phillips Arena was well populated with nearly 8,000 in attendance.Opening acts were well received; then came Kirk Franklin, who danced and sang every hit in his considerable repertoire—not only did he dazzle the audience on stage and down the aisles; he did everything except swing from

the light fixtures…and the crowd loved it!As for Steve Harvey, surprisingly, after phenomenal appearances at MegaFest, TBN and other Christian outlets, it seemed extremely difficult for him to cur-tail his propensity for profanity. Although he made the audience aware that he “intentionally” would slip; there were moments when the great comedic genius went into a “crotch-grabbing” episode to illus-trate one of his jokes that…well…was a lot to han-dle…Family friendly? No way! However, we encour-age you to attend, just be aware and forewarned!■

health&fitness

We've been told over an over again that daily weighing is unnecessary, yet

many of us can't resist peeking at that number every morn-

ing. If you just can't bring yourself to toss the scale

in the trash, you should definitely familiarize yourself with the

A single teaspoon of salt contains over 2,000 mg of so-

dium. Generally, we should only eat between 1,000 and 3,000 mg of sodium a day, so it's easy to go overboard. Sodium is a sneaky substance. You would expect it to be most highly concentrated in salty chips, nuts, and crackers. However, a food doesn't have to taste salty to be loaded with so-dium. A half cup of instant pud-ding actually contains nearly four times as much sodium as an ounce of salted nuts, 460 mg in the pud-ding versus 123 mg in the nuts. The more highly processed a food is, the more likely it is to have a high sodium content. That's why, when it comes to eating, it's wise to stick mainly to the basics: fruits, vegetables, lean meat, beans, and whole grains. Be sure to read the labels on canned foods, boxed mixes, and frozen dinners. Women may also retain several pounds of water prior to menstruation. This is very com-mon and the weight will likely disappear as quickly as it arrives. Pre-menstrual water-weight gain can be minimized by drinking plenty of water, maintaining an exercise program, and keeping high-sodium processed foods to a minimum. Another factor that can influ-ence the scale is glycogen. Think of glycogen as a fuel tank full of stored carbohydrate. Some glyco-gen is stored in the liver and some is stored the muscles themselves.

This energy reserve weighs more than a pound and it's packaged with 3-4 pounds of water when it's stored. Your glycogen supply will shrink during the day if you fail to take in enough carbohydrates. As the glycogen supply shrinks you will experience a small impercep-tible increase in appetite and your body will restore this fuel reserve along with it's associated water. It's normal to experience glyco-gen and water weight shifts of up to 2 pounds per day even with no changes in your calorie intake or activity level. These fluctuations have nothing to do with fat loss, al-though they can make for some un-necessarily dramatic weigh-ins if you're prone to obsessing over the number on the scale. Otherwise rational people also tend to forget about the actual weight of the food they eat. For this reason, it's wise to weigh yourself first thing in the morning before you've had anything to eat or drink. Swallowing a bunch of food before you step on the scale is no different than putting a bunch of rocks in your pocket. The 5 pounds that you gain right after a huge dinner is not fat. It's the actual weight of every-thing you've had to eat and drink. The added weight of the meal will be gone several hours later when you've finished digesting it. Exercise physiologists tell us that in order to store one pound of fat, you need to eat 3,500 calo-ries more than your body is able to burn. In other words, to actually store the above dinner as 5 pounds of fat, it would have to contain a whopping 17,500 calories. This is not likely, in fact it's not humanly possible. So when the scale goes up 3 or 4 pounds overnight, rest easy, it's likely to be water, glycogen, and the weight of your dinner. Keep in mind that the 3,500 calorie rule works in reverse also. In order to lose one pound of fat you need to

The truth

about the

SCALE

19

health&fitnessburn 3,500 calories more than you take in. Generally, it's only possible to lose 1-2 pounds of fat per week. When you follow a very low calorie diet that causes your weight to drop 10 pounds in 7 days, it's physically impossible for all of that to be fat. What you're really losing is water, glycogen, and muscle. This brings us to the scale's sneak-iest attribute. It doesn't just weigh fat. It weighs muscle, bone, water, internal organs and all. When you lose "weight," that doesn't neces-sarily mean that you've lost fat. In fact, the scale has no way of telling you what you've lost (or gained). Losing muscle is nothing to cel-ebrate. Muscle is a metabolically active tissue. The more muscle you have the more calories your body burns, even when you're just sit-ting around. That's one reason why a fit, active person is able to eat considerably more food than the dieter who is unwittingly destroy-ing muscle tissue. Robin Landis, author of "Body Fueling," compares fat and muscles to feathers and gold. One pound of fat is like a big fluffy, lumpy bunch of feathers, and one pound of muscle is small and valuable like a piece of gold. Obviously, you want to lose the dumpy, bulky feathers and keep the sleek beautiful gold. The problem with the scale is that it doesn't differentiate between the two. It can't tell you how much of your total body weight is lean tissue and how much is fat. There are sev-eral other measuring techniques that can accomplish this, although they vary in convenience, accuracy, and cost. Skin-fold calipers pinch and measure fat folds at various lo-cations on the body, hydrostatic (or underwater) weighing involves ex-haling all of the air from your lungs before being lowered into a tank of water, and bioelectrical impedance measures the degree to which your body fat impedes a mild electrical current. If the thought of being pinched, dunked, or gently zapped

just doesn't appeal to you, don't worry. The best measurement tool of all turns out to be your very own eyes. How do you look? How do you feel? How do your clothes fit? Are your rings looser? Do your muscles feel firmer? These are the true measurements of success. If you are exercising and eating right, don't be discouraged by a small gain on the scale. Fluctuations are perfectly normal. Expect them to happen and take them in stride. It's a matter of mind over scale. ■

Fat Burning Foods

Coffee contains caffeine, which helps speed up your heart rate and thus helps you burn more calories, reports AOL Health. Of course, the hundreds of calo-ries in a sugar and fat-rich blended coffee drink can negate whatever heart-quickening benefit the cof-fee in caffeine imparts, so you may want to consider using skim milk and keeping sweeteners to a mini-

Oats are a rich source of fiber, which pumps up your metabolism. And since oatmeal breaks down slowly in your stomach, says AOL Health, it doesn’t cause a big insulin spike the way carbs like bagels do. Oatmeal is typically eaten for breakfast, which is an important meal to consume for anyone who wants to burn calories. Eating this meal keeps insulin production down and revs up the daily calorie burn.

Whole grain cereal is a fab source of both complex carbs and fiber, and these are what’s needed to keep your metabolism pumped by keeping insulin levels low after a meal. Since insulin spikes make your body think it’s time to start storing the fat, eating foods that lower insulin levels makes sense.

0

Milk contains calcium, which acts as a metabolic trigger. A University of Tennessee study found that dieters who consumed 1,200 to 1,300 mg of calcium daily lost almost twice as much weight as dieters who ingested less calcium. Milk also is a rich source of complex carbohydrates, which can boost your metabolism by helping your insulin levels stay low after a meal.

Salmon contains Omega-3 fatty acids, which can alter the levels of a hormone in your body called leptin, says AOL

Health. Lower leptin levels are as-sociated with a higher caloric burn. This fish is excellent on the grill, so think of it when it's time to fire up the barbecue this season.

PROPHETWhat is a prophet and why do we need one?By Cierra Williams

THE OFFICE OF THE

Perhaps you’ve heard of Isaiah, Daniel, Jer-emiah and Ezekiel; the great prophets of the

Old Testament. These great men went through extreme measures, often the target of turmoil and persecutions, to deliver, “Thus sayeth the Lord” to the crowds of people and individuals . Very few people will disclaim the gift of prophecy as described on these men’s lives in the Bible. However, they will admit that those proph-ets were then and as for today they are skeptical and have al-tered their belief in the operation of the modern day prophet. Yet, even with the crowds of those who don’t consider anyone in the modern day to be a proph-et, many still belive in the gift and the continual role of the prophet as taught in Ephesians 4. So then, who or what is a proph-

et?A prophet is a person who has been called of God to speak for Him and to be His messenger They serve as an intermediary de-livering the messages from God. In Hebrew, the word navi, “spokes-person”, traditionally translates as “prophet”. Usually, navi is de-scribed better using Deuterono-my 18:18, where God said, “...and I will put My words in his mouth, and he shall speak unto them all that I shall command him.” Thus, the navi was thought to be the “mouth” of God. There were shifts in the viewing of prophets, espe-cially in 1Samuel where proph-ets went from viewed as seers to viewed as moral teachers. In Christianity a prophet is one inspired by God through the Holy Spirit to deliver a message for a specific purpose. It is often as-sociated with predicting future

Kathryn Kuhlman, is one of the most fascinating women of the 20th cen-tury. Known for her mesmorizing voice and for gliding across stages in a sweeping white gown, Kathryn Jo-hanna Kuhlman was an American faith healer and evangelist. She was born in Concordia, Missouri on May 9, 1907 to German-American parents; and died in Tulsa, Oklahoma on February 20, 1976, following open-heart surgeryShe was born-again at the age of 14 in the Methodist Church of Concordia, and began preaching in the West at the age of sixteen in primarily Baptist Churches. Kuhlman traveled exten-sively around the United States and in many other countries holding “heal-ing crusades” between the 1940s and 1970s. She had a weekly TV program in the 1960s and 1970s called I Believe In Miracles that was aired nationally. Many called her a pentecostal preach-er and often thought of her as strange. Even though she preached sound doc-trine many questioned why as a wom-

an she want-ed to preach, she replied,” “A man was called by God to do it, but he refused, so God told me and I obeyed in faith.”With her

mysterious presence and awe-inspir-ing teachings, she influenced faith healers Benny Hinn and Billy Burke. Hinn has adopted some of her tech-niques and wrote a book about her.

events, to preach repentance and/or to warn people. The gift of prophecy is not con-sidered to elevate an individual for their glory, but for the glory of God and to turn people to Him.It is to be noted that prophets are still to be recognized as human and fallible. They do make wrong dexisions, have incorrect beliefs or opinions and still suspect to sin. There hearing of revelation does not remover their human-ity or perfect them, nor do they always want to deliver the mes-sages they have heard i.e. Jonah. Nevertheless, prophets must nev-er contradict the Bible and people must be aware of false prophets, who claim to speak God’s word or teach in His name however, they may be purposely trying to decieve, are delusional, only speaking from their own spirit or are under the influence of Satan. Because of our inability at times to hear clearly from God and His love for us to return to HIm, God has chosen certain people to be His spokesmen. Through proph-ets God reveals His will, His char-acter and His Truth. As a special witness, a prophet is to tell and teach the world about God’s greatness. The prophet is an i m -portant role in both the spiri-tual and natural worlds. A l -though, in modern times the term “prophet” c a n be somewhat con- troversial, one must know that all that God reveals through HIs prophets will come to pass.Tough shoes to walk-in. ■
