We have followed the narrative of our Christian faith shaped by the shadow of the colosseum and forum, formed by persecution, and molded in the crucible of the vitality and variety of religious options in the first century. Then, in the beginning of the fourth century, Christianity becomes the imperial religion. Churches are everywhere and Christians are in charge. In the ensuing centuries, palaces are built, sculptures are shaped, paintings are brushed all in magnificent splendor. But then, in the 12th century, Sts. Francis and Claire challenge the church to heed its original call for caring for the neediest and showing hospitality to all. St. Peter's basilica is completed as Luther's reformation takes hold. All of this is history – AND THEN Pope Francis is elected. We were in St. Peter's square just hours before the white smoke rose from the Sistine Chapel chimney. The more things change, the more they stay the same. All of this history begins with a man from Galilee who performed miracles and taught about the Kingdom of God. He was killed and rose to life. From the humblest to the most grandiose, all sought to praise, honor and follow. The story continues at Forest Hill Church. You and I are the humble and the proud, the rich and the poor, the sick and the well through whom the story of Jesus Christ will be carried forward. In the tension of change we are called to follow Christ, offer our best, and leave our mark on the kingdom to the glory of God.

We are with on Pilgrimage in Rome, Christian Church. This tripMarch 9 - 16. Well, what an interesting trip this is A couple of days ago we were touring one of the zillion churches in Rome, and as we went to leave the front door some of us had to wait as the former Bishop of Boston paused on the way in to answer questions from a reporter with a TV camera crew. He seemed rather irritated by the questions about his handling of the church mess in Boston a few years ago. On a religious blog the next day it was reported that he had been interviewed in front of a group of American protesters! If we had knactually protested. Maybe they meant to say American Protestants... Today, of all days (the day of Pope Francis’ election)group was scheduled to visit Vatican City, to see the Vatican Museum, St. Peter’s Basilica, the Scalla (tombs below St. PeterChapel. We did all of that except for the Chapel, which had flocked to and pre-empted our visit! It was a cold rainy day so we were among a thousand umbrellas as we passed through St. Peterseveral times during the day. When we left, at 5:30and the crowd was getting excitedwhite. The smoke had been black yesterday and two times eawas scheduled to appear about 7today... so we left.

There were two huge TV screens set up in the square showing the chimney, which otherwise could not be seen from there. Across the back end of the square there were two wide platforms set up for TV camera crews and several rows of flood lights being used to illuminate the building at the front end of the square, where the famous balcony is centered on the second story above the entrance doors to St. Peter’s Cathedral where we had been an hour earlier. When we got to a restaurant for dinner at 6:30, we heard that there had been white smoke, but the identity would not be known until officially announced from the balcony in a half hour or so. As we finished our appetizers and first pasta course we learned that the Pope was from Argentina, and had selected his new name to be Francis, after St. Francis of Asissi. The first Pope to use that name…and guess where we are scheduled to go tomorrow... Yup! a whole day in Asissi. But wait! There's more!!! The first duty of a new Pope is to celebrate mass at, and take charge of, the Basilica of St. Mary, Major. This is the oldest and largest church in the world that is dedicated to Mary, Mother of Jesus. It happens to be 2 blocks away from us, at the end of the short little street where our hotel is! We are all concerned about how far we will have to walk to get to our bus in the morning, and... once we get away from that traffic snarl, our next concern is how crowded Asissi will be by reporters doing “back story” on the home of the famous St. Francis, now honored for the first time by a Pope taking his name. CHILDREN’S CHRISTIAN EDUCATION

In March our children explored the events and stories of Jesus’ ministry. Our younger members took part in activities around stories of people who met Jesus such as Zacchaeus, Bartimaeus and the Woman with the Alabaster Jar. Jesus welcomed all who wanted to be part of God’s family. • In our nursery, thank you to Lisa Koops, Ron Register, Trent Swain,

Caleb Marcy and Katie Russo. • In our Little Explorers class, thank you to Katie & Matt Russo and Becky

West. • In our Children in Worship class, thank you to Jen Fu. • In our Pathways to the Promise Land program, thank you to Molly

Bergman, Laurie Logan, Kate & David Burleigh, Joanne Shaner, Sarah Winters, Derek Duncan, Alisha Trammell, Robin Mervine, and Cathy Ghiandoni.

CHILDREN’S MINISTRY Little Explorers- three/four year olds Children in Worship -older four year olds and kindergarten Throughout the month of April our pre-school will explore and participate in Bible stories about events following Easter. Each lesson has an activity response to the story they heard to help them better understand the meaning. Susanne and Laura Peterjohn will be leading in the Little Explorers class and Lisa Koops and Jessica Kelley-Moore will be leading in the Children in Worship class. Pathways to the Promise Land -grades 1-5 Our rotation-style church school for children in grades 1-5 will be focusing on Paul. The intent of Paul’s gospel is to spread the good news beyond the Jewish community. Paul uses different symbols and experiences to help us realize that all people regardless of background are welcome in the family of Christ. The children will be exploring this theme through cooking, movement and story.

Global Warming and Climate Change

No thoughtful Christian doubts the reality of global warming and climate change. Is this God’s vengeance on a misbehaving Mother Nature? No, it’s the misbehaving of God’s human creatures, his children. We have poisoned our atmosphere with carbon emissions from our use of what is in the earth – oil, natural gas, and coal – to “fuel” our lifestyle in the industrialized era. These carbon emissions have greatly accelerated the ‘natural’ change in the environment, resulting in increased severity of floods, drought, glacial and icecap melting as the ‘first tier’ consequences of global warming. But it is the ‘second tier’ consequences which are most alarming. Here are a few examples:

• droughts and floods diminish our agricultural capability to feed an ever-growing population. Pestilence and disease can flourish.

• increased chemical usage, unrecyclables, (and fracking!) threaten fresh water supplies.

• the increased warming that alters life cycles and the interdependency of every living creature changes the balance of nature and moves biodiversity to extinction – which then eliminates possibilities of medical science to finding cures to many illnesses from animal and plant organisms.

Monday, April 22 is Earth Day, and we will celebrate and dedicate Sunday, April 21 to Earth Care. Adult Education will feature outside speakers who will discuss implications of Global Warming and Climate Change and what we can and MUST do about it from family, community, national and global perspectives. Pastor Lentz will preach on Earth Care from a biblical perspective.

Plan to be there……it is a moral obligation for us as God’s children to further learn and respond to this critical issue.

Update - Kitchen Renovations

A project is being undertaken to make some long overdue renovations to the Forest Hill kitchen, including sorely needed updates of the kitchen range and ovens, replacing work tables, replacing flooring, and reworking of the storage space. The kitchen is central to making Forest Hill Church a welcoming community, providing fellowship through food and encouraging social activities. Please remember: in order to enable ongoing activities to make the church building as welcoming as the friendly faces of its members, we cannot do without your steady pledge payments to keep the church's bookkeeping on an even keel. Thank you for your generosity. Eric Rich, Trustee
