You will experience the multiple styles of lighting and modifiers that she uses to create editorial im-ages for today’s fashion magazines. You can find her as a platform speaker at events such as WPPI, Photo Plus, Imaging USA and several others. She teaches thousands of photographers annually on topics such as creative retouching, fashion techniques, studio lighting, finding inspiration, creativity and more. Lindsay received her degree from Syracuse University in Communications, Entrepreneurship and Political Science. She lives on the Upper West Side and has a studio in the Chelsea area.

Join Lindsay on Monday, April 28 at 10 a.m. as she will not only demonstrate the technical aspects of lighting, but will also delve into the creativity behind her shoots. She will discuss the thoughts behind each setup and how to ac-complish your vision through the use of correct studio lighting techniques. All of the lessons she will teach can be applied to regular portrait shoots as well as wedding or fashion. Make your photography stand out from the rest by adding a fashion flair using studio lighting. You and your clients will love the results. Register now!

Well, according to the calendar it is SUPPOSED to be spring!

Hopefully we are all thawing out from a really cold and long winter.

The essence of spring represents rebirth and an overall feeling of happiness and anticipation of new things to come. As we all begin to shake off the challenges of this past winter from the weather, lost loved ones, illness and slow business, we have to take a deep breath and focus on “Moving Forward”.

So, ask yourself, what do I need to do today to keep moving forward? There may be more than one answer because life is not linear and we have many facets going on at any given time. Moving forward may consist of one or several actions occurring simultaneously.

Once you have your answer, make a plan and ACT on it. Your plan doesn’t have to be some 45 page dissertation on every potential variation. It can be as simple as a “To-Do” list, but the more detailed your list (within reason) you are, the more attainable those “To-Dos” are. If you are feeling overwhelmed, STOP, review your list, and choose the most important item and focus on that first and go on from there.

Remember, the most important thing isn’t to have a million things racing forward at the same time. The most important thing is to simply “Keep Moving Forward” and enjoy every day that we have been blessed with to continue doing and sharing what we all love to do.

I want to wish everyone a happy and safe spring.

Best,

President’s Message from Randy

PPAM President’s Award

Congratulations to Cassandra Sullivan (former VP of Communi-cations and last year’s Photographic Excellence Award winner) for receiving the President’s Award this year. President Randy Brogen praised her efforts for bringing the new print competition software to the Board’s attention. Unfortunately, Cassandra was unable to attend the convention but was there in spirit!

PPA 2014 Northeast District Photographic Competition

The PPA 2014 Northeast District Photographic Competition is being held this year on May 20 - 21 in Nashua, NH at the Radisson Hotel. The District competition is a precursor to PPA’s International Photographic Competition. Competition registration opens on April 7, 2014 and all entries must be uploaded by 5:00pm P.T. on May 12, 2014 even if you are hand delivering the case. For more information visit the PPA website. You’ll find the Northeast competition rules here.

“Define your “Why” - your why and your purpose has so much to do with really making your goals happen. Your passion without a purpose is really just going to wear you out.

“Not why you want to take pictures, we all love taking pictures – that’s the easy part. But why do you want to make a business, why do you want to be profitable...take some time to really carve that out. What is your motivation, what’s your why? Just because we love photography is not going to drive profitability.” - Lori Nordstrom

The F-Stops Here

Our sincere condolences to these PPAM members who lost loved ones over the past few months: Cathy Broderick, Linda Pedi and Paul Robinson with the passing of their mothers; George Lucozzi with the loss of his uncle and Patricia Walsh Slaven with the passing of her cousin. Our deepest sympathies go out to Allen Swinimer with the loss of his daughter Karen, who was also a PPAM member. Our thoughts are with all of you.

Congratulations to PPAM President Randy Brogen and PPAM member Steve Sedman who were PPA Degree Recipients in 2013. Their Craftsman degrees were conferred by PPA Council on January 13, 2014, and they were honored at the PPA Award & Degree ceremony in Phoenix, AZ on January 14, 2014. What a wonderful accomplishment!

Congratulations to Nicole Chan of Boston, MA who won 10th place in the International Society of Professional Wedding Photographers’ (ISPWP) competition - in the “Wedding Dress” category! Nicole will be speaking on “Streamlining and Standing Out” at the Professional Photographers of Cape Cod monthly meeting, June 2 at 6:30p.m.

Congrats to Abby Sullivan whose son is a computer animator and worked on the movie Frozen. Although the director and producer won the Oscar, he did get to hold it! He was the youngest team member, hired at age 22 by Disney. Abby said, “It’s very exciting for all of us!”

PPAM members Mark O’Connell, Susan White and Steve Sedman will be speaking on Monday, June 30 at PPANE’s 2014 full day summer retreat at historic Rolling Ridge Retreat & Conference Center in North Andover, Mass. Mark and Susan will be speaking about High School Seniors. Steve will be speaking about Weddings. These talented photographers have so much information to share!

Congratulations to the following PPAM members who each won a $200 scholarship at the 2014 convention. They each attended a program and collected a lucky ticket at the door! The scholarship can be used towards NEIPP or for their continuing photographic education. The winners are: Gayle Bannister, Charlton; Gail Lucozzi, Billerica; Patricia Walsh Slaven, Hanover; George Lucozzi, Billerica; Ann Dreiker, N. Easton; Abby Sullivan, Sharon; Ryan Koehler, Chestnut Hill and James Boykin, Roxbury. PPANE President, Ed Pedi drew Alice Pepplow’s name as the lucky $250 scholarship winner. Congrats, All!

Joyce Holt Receives the National AwardCongratulations to VP of Membership and Records, Joyce Holt who received the National Award at the awards ceremony Sunday February 23, 2014. The National Award is provided by the PPA to national, regional and international affiliated associations which confer this special honor in recognition of outstanding service to professional photography performed by an individual.

Joyce has dedicated many hours of her time to PPAM and the profession of photography. She has been the first face you’ve seen when arriving at a seminar or convention and along with her warm smile and gentle ways you’ve probably also been greeted with a “Hey baby”. There is no one more deserving than Joyce of this honor.

We congratulate you, Joyce and thank you for all the countless, selfless hours you have given to our organization!

Joyce Holt Says Thank You“I would like to thank my PPAM family for all the support they have given me over the years and to let you know that receiving the prestigious “National Award” from PPA is such a great honor. I am deeply humbled, honored and blessed that my peers deem me to be worthy of such. I will continue to contribute my time and support to our fabulous organization as the years go on.

Again, thank you each and every one.”

CREATIVE THEME for 2015 PPAM Photographic Competition

Congratulations to George Lucozzi for winning the 2014 Creative Theme Award for his photographic interpretation of WILD. There were 8 entries this year with the winning image chosen by the Image Competition judges rather than by the secret ballot of peers as done in past years. As the winner, George has the distinct honor of choosing the theme for next year’s competition – he has chosen “Drama”! Put your thinking caps on – we can wait to see what Drama you can

create photographically speaking? It’s always so much fun to see these interpretations.

PPAM 2014 Convention “Keep Moving Forward”Randy Brogen, PPAM President of 2013 & 2014, gave an inspiring speech last year that paved the way to this wonderful convention. The theme was set, and “Keep Moving Forward” we did! Thank you, Warner Smith, VP of Programs for reaching out to me and asking me to take on one of the most rewarding projects I’ve been involved with.

What a wonderful organization of people who pulled together and made this year’s convention spectacular! I’ve heard great feedback about how much people enjoyed the speakers and I believe we have the numbers to prove it!

Now is the best part of my job as Convention Chair: sharing with you how much I truly appreciated all those who have volunteered their time and talent.

I’ll start with my lifeline and past convention chair, Andy Joliat. Without her guidance I would have not even known where to begin. She is the epitome of what makes our organization great - helpfulness, kindness, and friendship!

Nancy Green, your dedication to PPAM and our convention (and a multitude of past conventions) has been indispensable. I thank you for the love you bring to this organization, not to mention time and dedication as Hotel Liaison.

Our ever helpful and friendly front desk staff, Courtney Trembler, VP of Finance and Joyce Holt, VP of Membership, along with our volunteers, Susan White, Dianne Marshall, & Dan Bitar greeted and directed guests. Oh, and thank you for sharing your family with us too! I hope you had a chance to stop in for a chair massage or some baby holding in between speakers.

Our VP of Technology, Patrick Brosnan and Props Chair, Paul Robinson, thank you for all of the behind the scenes work you do. I know they can be under-appreciated positions, but without you we would be lost.

Thank you to Susan Asaro, VP of Communications. She organized all of the information for our convention booklets and designed our beautiful signs. Not to mention, the countless newsletters, e-blasts, and social media notifications. Without these, I believe our numbers would not have been nearly as high as they were (I was told it was the largest convention in years!)

Paula Chandoha put together our scholarship drawing bags and what a great variety we had! Also, thanks to Agnes Kane, for helping to sell tickets and Linda Pedi for helping to solicit donation items.

I want to thank my husband Alfred Cloutier for his work with vendors for this year’s tradeshow, it was greatly appreciated.

Cathy Broderick and Paula Swift, what an amazing job you did with Image Competition this year! It was the first time we were able to actually talk during competition, thanks to “Club 79”! Audio along with online support was provided by PrintCompetition.com.

Thanks from Lauren Cloutier – PPAM Convention Chair

And another BIG thanks go to Lisa Tommaney for managing the volunteers (and yes, sometimes managing me). You are another invaluable part of this organization.

Gail and George Lucozzi, you know how I feel about what you do for the hospitality suite, although being Convention Chair did not give me as much time as I would have liked enjoying what you provide! Thank you, to one of the most hospitable and fun couples we have!

And, speaking of fun couples thank you Joanne Aleo for helping set up for the banquet and her husband Barry Aleo for the great music and entertainment at the banquet.

The chairpersons of the day - Doug Bradshaw, Connie Drapeau Kennedy, Warner Smith, and Jeff Baker helped to make sure the speakers had what they needed and managed the prize drawings at the close of the programs.

Tracy Gilford and James Boykin photographed all of the happenings of our 4 day convention, speakers and parties!

Hilary Wood provided very thoughtful and unique gift bags to all our speakers and judges.

And our Security Chair, Keitha Hassell (along with all our security volunteers Alice Pepplow, Gayle Bannister, John Waite, Andreia Makkas, Catherine Fow, John Waite, Laurie Lizotte, Barry Okun, Jeff Baker and Susan Ogar ) for making sure that all members were greeted at the door and non-members were shown their way to the front desk to sign in.

And as I “Keep Moving Forward,” I am already organizing and compiling my lists for next year’s convention!

I hope you will consider joining us and maybe even volunteering! There are many positions of all sizes large and small. Please contact volunteer chair Lisa Tommaney for more information. And if you’d like to make some suggestions about next year’s convention please contact me, Lauren Cloutier.

One of the things I like to do to clear my head and stay in good health is run. And while I’m running my mind “runs” through all sorts of things. Recently this is what I thought of – being the ‘new person.’

Here’s why: this January I went early to Imaging USA in Phoenix, AZ because I signed up for a pre-con class with Gary & Pam Box. I didn’t know a soul (nor did anyone else in the class, most likely) and I got that feeling of being the ‘new person.’ You remember what that feels like, right? You think about where you’ll sit, whom you might go to lunch with, do you dare strike up a conversation with anyone? Well, maybe you don’t think like that but I do and did. It’s a bit of an uncomfortable feeling and then eventually it passes. I did end up chatting with some folks over the course of two days and even met someone from Maine, Trish Logan, in the class (small world). We enjoyed some nice conversations!

Then, one night, I met my friends who were already at the restaurant for dinner across the street from our hotel. There was someone at the table that I didn’t know. In fact, none of us knew her. Turns out, my friend Dianne Marshall was one of the first to get to the restaurant and she saw a woman sitting alone at the bar. Seeing her Imaging badge Dianne asked if she was waiting for someone. The woman said ‘no,’ so Dianne asked her if she’d like to join us for dinner. She accepted and a lovely evening was had by all of us getting to know her, the ‘new person.’

I write about this because I remember the feeling of being ‘new’ to this organization too. I didn’t go to the banquet (now the awards ceremony) unless my close friends were going and definitely wouldn’t sit with anyone I didn’t know. Too scary! However, a few PPAM people made an effort whenever they saw me to come over and start a conversation. I really appreciated that. They made me feel welcome and took some of the scary awkwardness away so I began to feel more comfortable and felt like I belonged.

So, I guess I’m speaking to some of the members who’ve been around for a while. We can be kind of ‘cliquey’ sometimes – yes, me included. I know. I get it. It’s because we miss our friends and don’t get to spend enough time with them. The seminars and conventions are more than just educational - they’re social! But we have new members and we will continue to increase our membership so there may always be a ‘new person’ in the room. You remember what that feels like, right? I absolutely do! How about we try and reach out more, as my friend Dianne did that night at dinner? Or as Linda Pedi reached out whenever she saw me at seminars. It’s my mission to do that more, too. The ‘new person’ will really appreciate it!

It definitely works both ways, so to you the ‘new person’ - reach out your hand, too. Ask to sit at that table, strike up a conversation with my friend Dianne in the registration area at the next seminar or convention. Linda will find you, for sure – I swear she has a ‘new person’ sixth sense. Then smile and take a deep breath…you’ll feel like you belong in no time. And guess what...you do!

Susan Asaro, Vice President of Communications
