It is with great pleasure that The Greater Haverhill Chamber of Commerce recognizes Nunan Florist & Greenhouses for their outstanding commitment to professional and community efforts with the honor of Business of the Month for March 2015.

Founded in 1917 by Albert D. Nunan, the greenhouse stayed in the family until Steve Flynn and Bill Guerrini purchased the business in 1985. Over the years they have strived to continue the Nunan tradition of providing exceptional quality and value to customers. This dedication has grown the business from four greenhouses to twenty and includes a garden center, nursery, full service florist shop and landscaping. They credit their success to sticking to their core values: exceptional quality, value, and customer service.

Nunan’s dedication is highlighted with their strong commitment to community. Not only do they host local garden clubs, they provide free plant rentals for fundraisers and donate seasonal decorations to enhance local downtowns. They have supported key organizations like Anna Jaques Hospital and the Jimmy Fund, as well as the Greater Haverhill Chamber of Commerce.

On Monday, March 23rd, the Chamber joined a group of Haverhill High

School students visiting Lawrence General Hospital for an Applied Academics event geared toward the Health Care Industry, arranged by the Chamber’s Business & Education Collaborative. Upon arrival at the hospital, the students first met with a representative from the Human Resources department, in a conference setting, to hear about the many clinical and non-clinical careers available at the hospital. From there, the students broke into three separate groups to tour various departments, including the Laboratory, Emergency Room, Cardiac Cath Lab, Radiology,

Mammography, Ultrasound, Food Services/Nutrition, Respiratory Therapy and SIM Lab, where they were able to try out equipment for an interactive experience. Following the tour,

the students reconvened in the conference room for a working lunch, where they learned about the educational requirements of nursing and other health-related career fields. The students were highly engaged and asked great questions! We appreciate and thank Lawrence General Hospital for their willingness to work with our Business & Education Collaborative on this first Applied Academic experience,

and look forward to expanding the program for more students next fall. Also in the works for the fall are a Career Fair and an Advanced Manufacturing Applied Academics Event. If you would like to participate in the Business & Education Collaborative, or one of these events, please contact Bev Donovan at [email protected] or (978) 373-5663 x12.

If this late wintery weather has got you down, just hang in there a little longer! The warmer temperatures have begun to arrive, and with them comes some truly awesome programming in the Haverhill Riverfront Cultural District!

This month Creative Haverhill and the Chamber, along with our hardworking committee , have been lining up vendors and entertainment for the upcoming KidsArtsFest in May. Families can expect a variety of arts activities and performances like an improv comedy show, an African drumming workshop, a Lego and robotics building area, and Kid’s Work Shops from the Home Depot!

Plans are well underway for Creative Haverhill’s “Movies by the River” outdoor movie series coming this summer! Beginning Thursday, July 9, and continuing each Thursday night until the end of August, families can venture downtown with their

camp chairs and settle in for completely free family entertainment. The movie line up includes new releases, and a few classic

family favorites! We are currently looking for groups who would like to volunteer as our movie crew. Volunteer crews will be responsible for greeting moviegoers, collecting donations, and picking up trash at the end of the event. This is an excellent opportunity for community service and exposure. Please email Jenny at [email protected] if your group would like to volunteer!

Finally, keep an eye out for the Haverhill Art Market, a new monthly marketplace for fine art, coming one Saturday a month to 90 Washington Street! A group of local artists including painters, sculptors, and digital artists from Creative Haverhill’s Artist Connection group are working together to support local artists and help establish Haverhill as a destination for art buyers! Stay tuned for more information. If you would like to participate as a vendor at the Haverhill Art Market, email Justin Gordon at [email protected].

President’s MessageSo often I am asked what the real value of chamber membership entails. Why join? What are the true benefits? Well the Shapiro group did a study that helps pinpoint to actual “value” that is derived from membership... research shows that membership is an effective way to convey to consumers that your company uses good business practices, is involved in the community, cares about customers, and is reputable—regardless of whatever they may or may not already think about the company. Better still, subjective opinion polls of consumers nationwide show that:

(59% of consumers think that being active in the local chamber of commerce is an effective business strategy overall. It is 29% more effective for communicating to consumers that a company uses good business practices and 26% more effective for communicating that a business is reputable.

If a company shows that it is highly involved in its local chamber (e.g., sits on the chamber board), consumers are 12% more likely to think that its products stack up better against its competition.

When a consumer thinks that a company’s products stack up better against the competition because the company is highly involved in its local chamber of commerce, it is because he or she infers that the company is trustworthy, involved in the community, and is an industry leader.

When consumers know that a restaurant franchise is a member of the chamber of commerce, they are 40% more likely to eat at the franchise in the next few months.

When consumers know that an insurance company is a member of the chamber of commerce, they are 43% more likely to consider buying insurance from it.

When consumers know that a small business is a member of the chamber of commerce, they are 44% more likely to think favorably of it and 63% more likely to purchase goods or services from the company in the future.

Why are these statistics important? Because, whether a large company or small business, when consumers know that a business is a member of the chamber, they are likely to patronize the company more often, to express favorable opinions about the company, to know more about the company, and to buy the company’s products. All of these things are more than what is advertised with most local chambers, but far exceed your expectations. Isn’t it time that you considered (or reconsidered) membership with the Greater Haverhill Chamber of Commerce? We are here to answer your questions and walk you through the process. Stacey L.
