Augustana Lutheran Church, Sioux City, Iowa The Trumpeter April 2015 Volume 23, Issue 4 From the Pastor Jane and I got to spend a long weekend in Seattle. It was great to see our kids and our new granddog, Winston. It was also nice to get away for a few days before the busy- ness of Holy Week and Easter. Im very excited to be part of what I hope will be a resuscitation of a decades-old tradi- tion on Good Friday. It started before the merger which created the ELCA in 1988. The pastors in the former LCA churches in Sioux City led a three-hour Good Friday service at Trinity Lutheran Church. Several years ago it was decided to allow that service to be laid to rest due to a markedly decreased attendance. Augustana will host a Good Friday service at noon with five of my col- leagues assisting in leadership roles. The service will last approximately one hour and will include a reading of the Passion according to St. John with five reflections interspersed. There will also be the traditional Bid- ding Prayer, Adoration of the Cross, and Solemn Reproaches. As Easter approaches we are reminded that through Holy Baptism we are Easter people. We are people who not only benefit from Jesusdeath on the cross to take away our sins, but we also share in the resurrec- tion to eternal life when we die. Easter is about good newsactually, the best news! Although the alleluia has been buriedduring Lent, we look forward to the Vigil of Easter and Easter Sunday when we will shout: Alleluia! Christ is risen! He is risen indeed! Alleluia! We had a wonderful celebration of the 125th year in the newchurch building at 6th and Court on February 15. The celebration continues with a banquet on April 11 at the Mason- ic Temple at 820 Nebraska Street. A Social Hour will begin at 5:30 p.m. and the Buffet Dinner will begin at 6:30 p.m. The dinner will consist of chicken and roast beef, cheesy potatoes, vegetable, salad, rolls and butter, coffee, tea, and water for only $5 per person 4 years of age and above! Children 3 and under are free. What a bargain! Thanks to those who have contributed to the 125th Fund, the price of the dinner is only $5. The AWE Musicians will entertain during the Social Hour and a display of memorabilia from the ar- chives will be on display. Parking at the Masonic Center is available on Nebraska Street, behind the former Elbon Club building at 800 Nebraska with entrance to this lot off of 8th Street between Nebraska and Jackson streets, and the lot off 8th Street between Nebraska and Pierce streets. The lot off of 8th Street behind the El- bon building is handicapped accessible with the entrance on the south side of the building. The entrance into the building on the west side has three steps. Dinner reservations need to be turned in by Wednesday, April 1. Another highlight of our celebration will be worship on April 12. We will have organ and trumpet at the 10:15 service along with a special post- communion canticle for choir and congregation. We hope that all current and many former members of Augustana will attend either or both of these fun ways to celebrate this momentous event in our church history Celebrating 125 Years at 6th and Court

From the Pastor Jane and I got to spend a long weekend in Seattle. It was great to see our kids and our new granddog, Winston. It was also nice to get away for a few days before the busy-ness of Holy Week and Easter. I’m very excited to be part of what I hope will be a resuscitation of a decades-old tradi-tion on Good Friday. It started before the merger which created the ELCA in 1988. The pastors in the former LCA churches in Sioux City led a three-hour Good Friday service at

Trinity Lutheran Church. Several years ago it was decided to allow that service to be laid to rest due to a markedly decreased attendance. Augustana will host a Good Friday service at noon with five of my col-leagues assisting in leadership roles. The service will last approximately one hour and will include a reading of the Passion according to St. John with five reflections interspersed. There will also be the traditional Bid-ding Prayer, Adoration of the Cross, and Solemn Reproaches. As Easter approaches we are reminded that through Holy Baptism we are Easter people. We are people who not only benefit from Jesus’ death on the cross to take away our sins, but we also share in the resurrec-tion to eternal life when we die. PIECE CORPS The PIECE CORPS (quilters) of Augusta-na Lutheran Church have been busy. We are sending 5 quilts to the Annual Quilt Auction for Lutheran

Lakeside Camp, which will be held on Saturday, April 11 at St. John Lutheran Church in Carroll, Iowa. Last year we sent 4 quilts, which sold for a total of $425.00. Proceeds from the auction go directly to provide camperships for chil-dren.

Our Augustana high school graduates will receive a quilt from us this spring.

Other quilts that we make will go to the Council on Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence here in Sioux City and Lutheran World Relief. Last year we gave a total of 70 quilts to both organizations.

Since November 2005 we have made and given away or sold a total of 894 quilts.

The Piece Corps meets on the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month from 10:30AM-2:30PM. Donations of fabric and sheets are always appreciated.

Members of the Piece Corps are: Pauline Beales, Bev Drefke, Lois Hansen, Elaine Kreutzian Janice Mohan, Rosalie Rich-ardson, Gloria Smith, Jean Turner and Marge Swanson.

We welcome new members to join us in this ministry.

Lutheran Lakeside holds its 22nd Annual Quilt Auc-tion April 11, 2015 at St John Lutheran Church in Car-roll. Quilts are handmade by individuals and women's groups who support the camp. Pastor Cindy Johnson and members from St John are planning, organizing and carrying out the event. Our thanks go out to them and all those who made the quilts. This is a large task that takes the hands of many people. Large quilts, small quilts, baby quilts, comforters, afghans, and other items are auctioned for this fund raiser. The event begins with quilt viewing and lunch be-tween 11:00am and 12:30 pm. The auction begins at 1:00. Will Epperly from St John Lutheran Church in Dun-lap is the auctioneer. Faith Lutheran Church in Odebolt, is supplementing the proceeds with $1.00 for every $3.00 raised up to $7,000. Gifts given before the auction may be used to help reach the total of $21,000 needed. If you would like to help us reach our goal but are una-ble to attend the auction you may send a gift before the auction to: Lutheran Lakeside Camp, 2491 170th St, Spirit Lake, IA 51360. Please indicate on your check your wishes to help with the quilt auction. Thank You!

April Benevolence will again be a Food Drive for Food Pantries at First Lutheran and St. Thomas Episcopal churches. God loves a cheerful giver. In addition to food items the food banks have requested: toothpaste, laundry de-tergent, Kleenex and toilet paper. We will again offer a cash opportunity of giving this year. In lieu of food items, money may be donated, which will be divided between the food pantries of St. Thomas Episcopal and First Lutheran. They can then use the money to purchase food from the Food Bank at 18 cents per pound. Money can be placed in a pew enve-lope marked for FOOD DRIVE, or writing a

check and noting FOOD DRIVE on the memo line. Thank you for your generosity.

April Benevolence

Most often, this section of the newsletter has been about money. There are more components to stewardship, however. This month’s emphasis is on stewardship of the earth. Earth Day (Friday, April 22—check out their website—www.earthday.org) is not a liturgical holiday, but

many congregations in rural settings have a liturgy for “Rogation Sunday” Rogation comes from the Latin "rogare" which means to ask. During that special liturgy people ask God’s blessing for the seed, for the soil, for those who labor in the fields and for all of God’s creation includ-ing humans. The Bible teaches that in the beginning God creat-ed the heavens and the earth and caused the sun to shine and the rain to fall, the plants to grow and the earth to give forth its increase. God is the giver of life in the seed, in the soil, and on the sowers. We affirm our baptismal creed where, in the First Article, we acknowledge that God “causes all crea-tures to serve for the uses and necessities of life sun, moon, and stars in the firmament, day and night, air, fire, water, earth, and whatever it bears and produc-es, birds and fishes beasts, grain, and all kinds of pro-duce….” (Luther’s Large Catechism) In the Rogation liturgy, people gather to ask God’s blessing on the seed that has been or will be planted, the soil that has been cultivated, and the farmers who labor to the service of God and for the good of all hu-manity. Not all of us are farmers, however, and Rogation Sunday is perhaps less meaningful to many people. That doesn’t exempt all people from caring for crea-tion! Stewardship of the earth is more than farming and includes more than farmers. It includes each one of us. Not littering is a simple thing each person can do to care for the earth. Each day tons of garbage are brought to landfills throughout the world. Recycling those items that are recyclable is a relatively easy thing to do. We have a recycle bin in the kitchen. Posted above it are the rules as published on the Sioux City website. At creation, humans were instructed to have do-minion over the rest of creation. This doesn’t give us license to rape and pillage the earth; it is a call for us to care for, to be stewards of creation. Each of us can do our part.

The Paschal Triduum, often called the Easter Tridu-um or simply the Triduum, begins during Holy Week, and consists of Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday. This includes the Great Easter Vigil, the pinnacle of the Triduum. The word Triduum comes from the Latin word meaning “three days.” The Triduum technically is not part of Lent (at least liturgically), but Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday are still reckoned as part of the traditional forty day Lenten fast. The Triduum celebrates the heart of our faith, salva-tion, and redemption: the death and resurrection of Je-sus Christ. Thus, the Triduum commemorates the Insti-tution of the Eucharist (the “sacrament of sacraments”), the passion, crucifixion, death of the Lord, his descent to the dead, and finally his glorious resurrection. Along with the Resurrection and Ascension, these important events make up the Paschal Mystery. Maundy Thursday is April 2 this year. We will again have two opportunities for worship: 11:00 AM and 7:00 PM. The morning service will include the story of Passo-ver found in Exodus and the Foot Washing story found in the Gospel of John. The evening service will include a drama written by Pastor Del entitled, “Judas.” Both services will include confession with the oppor-tunity for individual laying on of hands and forgiveness. Holy Communion will also be a part of both services. Hand washing and stripping of the altar will be part of the evening service only. Good Friday is April 3. There will be two oppor-tunities for worship: noon and 7:00 PM. Reflections on the Passion according to St. John will presented at both services: area ELCA pastors at noon and five female members at 7:00 PM. Other compo-nents will be the traditional Bidding Prayer, Solemn Re-proaches, and Adoration of the Cross. The Vigil of Easter is April 4. Our service begins in the northwest parking lot with the “new fire” and in-cludes an Easter procession, Thanksgiving for Baptism, and Holy Communion.

The Three Days (Triduum [tree-DOO-oom])

The Resurrection of Our Lord The Resurrection of Our Lord, Easter Sunday, is April 5. We will have our 8:00 worship in the nave with a Festival Easter Worship at 10:15. The Celebration Choir will sing and a brass en-semble will play at the late service. Youth will be serving break-fast from 8:00-9:30. A freewill offering will be received for the breakfast.

Youth News April 8 is the last date for this school year that we will be helping to pack backpacks at the Food Bank of Siouxland. We need twelve people to sign

up on the sheet next to Pastor’s study. We meet at the Food Bank at 6:00 (on 11th Street east of Floyd).
