    Modesty!! Is Always Beautiful

    By: Maulana Ilyaas Patel Sahib

Once upon a time …. there existed a society

that possessed true values. Among them lived the

    Kinds of magic

    In his 7Mu!radaat al2ur5an8# Imam &aaghib

al2Is!ahaani says that there are several ,inds o!

    magic. *irstly# there are sleights o! hand# li,e

    those o! 0ugglers# /hich deceive the eyes o! the

    onloo,ers# but have no !urther substance. hen#there are /ays o! in!luencing the imagination o!

    others through the concentration o! one5s o/n

po/ers o! thought so that they begin to see or !eel

things /hich do not really exist as happens in

mesmerism or hypnotism. Such a result is

sometimes obtained /ith the help o! the devils

'Shayaateen) too. In spea, ing o! the magicians o!

    the Pharaoh# the $oly ur5an says:

    8  April 2016 Jamadiuth-Thani 1437

    “They +ast a s%ell o the eyes of the %eo%le2 &32445'

    Or# in another place:

    “Th$ou)h thei$ a)i+ Moses +ae to thi6 that

    they &$o%es tu$ed ito se$%ets' we$e $ui)

    about2 &78255'

Obviously# this piece o! magic had to do /ith

in!luencing o! the imagination. he second o! these

verses employs a verb /hich has the same root asthe noun 9hayaal 'thought)# and hence clearly

states that the ropes and the /ands cast do/n by

the magicians had neither turned serpents nor

made by any movement# but the imagination o!

Sayyidna Musaa 'Alaihis2Salaam) had been a!!ected

so as to see them running about in the shape o!

serpents. he $oly ur5an also indicates the other

    /ay o! in!luencing men5s imaginations /hich

involves the help o! devils 'Shayaateen):

    Shall I tell you o who the de-ils des+ed"

    They des+ed o all those who a$e slade$e$s

    ad sie$s*# &752777'

Still another ,ind o! magic is that /hich can

change the very nature o! a thing !or example#

turning a man into a beast or into a stone.

    Scholars li,e Imam &aghib al2Is!ahani and Abu2

Ba,r al2"assaas deny that magic can totally

    change the nature o! a thing# but con!ine the

    e!!icacy o! magic only to in!luencing the

imagination and to deceiving the eyes o! the

onloo, ers. his is also /hat the Mu5ta%ilah thought

o! the matter. But most o! the scholars hold that

neither the Shari5ah nor any rational argument!orbids the possibility o! trans2substantiation or

the changing o! one thing into another# li,e a living

body turning into a stone. As !or the /ell2,no/n

principle o! the classical philosophers that the

    change o! the 7essences8 '$a-aai-) is not

possible# it concerns the essences o! the three

categories the Impossible# the Possible and the

    ;ecessary 22# !or# rationally spea,ing# it 0ust

cannot be that something impossible should

become possible# or that something possible

should become impossible. And as to the $oly

    ur5an putting do/n the magic o! the

the imagination. Moreover# certain scholars have

seen an argument in !avour o! the possibility o!

    trans2substantiation through magic in a saying o!

9a5b al2Ahbar# reported by Imam Maali, in his

    Mu/atta on the authority o! a5-a Ibn $aa,im

create doubt in your mind and adopt that /hich

does not create any doubt in your mind.8

Commenta y: (henever a person is doubt!ul regarding the
