Easter is a time of community celebration. The beginning of spring, and the great hope and joy felt by the faithful because of Christ’s Resurrection, combine to make Easter truly the greatest day during the whole year for all people. A feeling of light-heartedness lifted every spirit, and colored the activity of the three day celebration.

As our weather is finally warming up and the snow is melting,
could we ask that you please send extra clothes (t-shirt,
pants, underwear, socks) for your child, to be kept in their
backpack, in case they slip in puddles. Thank you.

EARLY CHILDHOOD REGISTRATION
We are presently accepting applications for our Early Childhood
Program. This program is offered to children who will be five
years of age before March 1, 2017. Our first responsibility is
to accommodate students who are Catholic and live within the
boundaries of St. Paul School. If you have not registered yet,
please do so as soon as possible! If you have any relatives or
friends that have children in this age group, please make them
aware of our program.

GRADE 3 GYMNASTICS
Grades 3A and 3B will be enjoying gymnastics at Ortona Gym on the 4 Wednesdays in May: May 4, 11, 18 and 25th. Sessions will begin at 9:30 a.m. and end at 11:00 a.m.

Partners with Parents Wellness and Safety Information Series
The District has just launched a new online series for parents. The Partners with Parents
Wellness and Safety Information series will provide valuable information and helpful
resources plus informative videos on a variety of topics of interest to parents and caregivers.
The Board of Trustees asked our administration to develop a series of online information
sessions for parents and the first topic in the series is Immunization Myths & Facts. Other
upcoming topics are Child Abuse – Awareness & Prevention, How to Talk to Kids about
Fentanyl & Other Drugs, and Nurturing Stress Hardiness & Resilience.
A new segment will be posted on our District website each month until the end of June. The

Easter (Pascha) comes every year – and indeed every Sunday – to remind us that God is not dead, that all is well because Christ is risen, risen indeed! The Feast of the Resurrection of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, is the most beautiful, joyous holy day – a holy day triumphing truth, a holy day restoring souls – it is the Feast of all Feasts! “How holy and radiant, indeed, this salutary dawn, in that it announces the most dazzling day, the day of the Resurrection, on which Light that existed before time comes forth from the tomb in the flesh and shines for all (Paschal Hymns).
I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another. ~John 13: 34-35~
This scripture passage comes from the Gospel of John in a section called the Book of Glory. It is so called because Jesus is preparing for His death and resurrection, through which the glory of God will be manifest. He is telling His disciples what the true mark of discipleship will be –love for one another. What makes this commandment a new one is that the love He is calling people to is based on the model of love that He has shown to humanity. It is unconditional, universal, and selfless. This, indeed, is God’s glory!
This month we are launching our Partners with Parents Wellness and Safety Information Series. Each year, the Council of Catholic School Superintendents of Alberta celebrates excellence in Catholic education. This year, Gerard McLar-ney, Rhonda Nixon, and Mark Sylvestre have been named the recipients of the Excellence in Catholic Education Award from Edmonton Catholic Schools. Congratulations to them, and to all of our nominees. It is a wonderful reflection of the commitment that our staff have to their vocation to bring children closer to Jesus.
Alberta Education sponsors the annual Excellence in Teaching Awards. Teachers and administrators can be nominated by students, par-ents, or peers for providing excellent experiences for students to engage in learning. We are very pleased to have had 21 teachers and 2 principals nominated for this very prestigious award. It is an honor to be nominated for this award. Congratulations to all of our nominees.
Another celebration of the commitment of our staff to Catholic education can be found in our upcoming Long Service Recognition Awards. Staff mem-bers are celebrated for every five years of service that they give beginning at their 10 year anniversary. This year, we have the amazing number of 531 staff members who will join in this wonderful ceremony. Sixty one of those people have between 30 and 45 years of service!
The Board of Trustees passed a motion at the March 15 public meeting with respect to Basic and Supplemental Education Costs. Beginning in the 2016-17 school year, basic school fees will no longer be charged to students attending Edmonton Catholic Schools in the regular program of studies. In the past, basic school fees may have included textbook rental, learning resources, printing, technology, library, or general fees. Schools may collect funds on a strictly cost recovery basis for optional supplemental educational activities in the following categories: extra-curricular teams/clubs, field trips, school activity costs (dances, social activities), student activity costs (i.e. academies), costs for extra-ordinary course con-sumables such as CTS/CTF modules, music, art, and other option courses.
In his new book, Dear Pope Francis, our Holy Father responds to letters that he has received from children all over the world. I would like to leave you with a quote that beautifully describes Catholic education, which provides students with a daily encounter with Christ. “There are many ways to get acquainted with Jesus. Actually, you don’t so much learn about Jesus as go in search of him so you can meet him as a person. When you look for Jesus, he will come to you and help you get to know him.”
