Holiday of the Month: April Fools (cont.)

… wrote to a British magazine and asked “When did the origins of April Fools actually began?”. This question still is being asked today by many and no one yet has a clear answer. Some state that the holiday originally began in the early 18th century. Other people believe it to have originated in 16th century France. It was and still is known in France as “Poisson D’Avril”, which translates to April Fish. Surprisingly though April Fools is been a known and popular holiday since the 19th century, even though it still is not an official holiday.

Eco Club Our school is contributing to the well-being of planet Earth. We have our very own Eco Club and students and teachers such as Ms. Alexander and Ms.Schneller take time out of lunch to contribute in making the world a better place. They do everything from look through our recycling and garbage for flaws in our sorting as well as plan programs which encourage and promote being an eco friendly habitant of our Earth. It is very important to be a Global Citizen as it is one of the ways to give back to our planet for all the resources and materials it has provided us with. There are many ways we can be an eco-friendly member of our community. Everything from simply turning the tap off while brushing, to picking a piece of trash on your sidewalks. Everything counts. Anything counts. Small things we do now can have such an impact on our future. It is our responsibility to do what we know is right for our future generations, and our Mother Earth. We once again appreciate our school’s Eco Club for being generous contributors to our environment.

(cont.) This year’s fundraising commitments are Technology, Student Engagement and Positive Climate for Learning and Working. We are all working hard to fundraise for a large white screen for the gym, more technology tools for learning (i.e., Chrome books, iPads, apps), engaging students with different opportunities, promoting school spirit and beautifying our school. Thank you to all our students, their families, community members and staff for their dedication, time and hard work in supporting Centennial’s fundraising efforts!

This year’s School Success Goals are:

Numeracy: IF students are provided with opportunities to use a variety of strategies (i.e., technology, manipulatives, observations, conversations, products) to demonstrate their learning, THEN students will become more effective independent and collaborative problem solvers.

Literacy: IF we engage the students in a variety of learning activities to specifically develop their critical literacy skills, THEN students will be more proficient in critically analyzing different forms of media text.

Climate: By June 2016, we will improve the collective sense of safe, positive school climate by increasing positive student behaviours through a variety of proactive and responsive character and bullying prevention and intervention strategies.

We hope everyone had a wonderful March Break and

All About Sports Engaging in sports and other physical activities are extremely vital parts of a student’s education. Although each sport has it’s own rules and equipment, every sport results in improvement of the following 3 things: good sportsmanship and teamwork, physical health, and disciplinary skills. Thus, it is important to engage in playing sports. It doesn't matter whether you prefer one sport over another, because every sport teaches students how to improve their daily lifestyle. Majority of sports require teams which consist of several students working together to achieve their goals. As a result, these students develop good teamwork skills which are beneficial for other subjects as well. They also learn how to collaborate and ensure that everyone has a role in the game. Playing sports are one of the many ways to improve your physical health. Although there are other options which can help your body, playing sports are guaranteed to help build your stamina and improve health. Lastly, sports are extremely helpful to increase discipline and focus while still having fun. In order to succeed and hope to win something from a game, it's essential to attend many practices. By attending all of these practices, you will become more disciplined and responsible. There are many students of Centennial who clearly have and display many of these qualities from being junior & senior athletes.

Science at CSPS Science at Centennial is a great experience. Recently, students at Centennial have been exploring the unit of cells and have just finished with the hydraulics and pneumatics unit which was quite fascinating. Students made machines which ran on hydraulic or pneumatic power such as robotic arms, cranes, catapults, bridges and much more. Students have also created excellent cell models from different materials such as food, clay, foam boards, plasticine and even minecraft. As a part of the mixtures and substances unit students also created products like lotions, perfumes and some juice forms. Many students also took part in the Peel technological skills competition. To conclude, the science program at Centennial is extremely interesting.

Smartphones The smartphone is a key to our daily lives. As humans, we use them all the time. Although, it isn't just adults, even kids have possession of such advanced devices. What is the smartphone, you may ask? A smartphone is a device which uses the normal functions of a phone, while allowing the user to experience the advantages of a toned-down computer. First of all, look at how small these smartphones are. Most computers don’t even fit into someone’s pocket. It is a combination of a PC and a phone, so it is able to do some of the things either one of those could not do before. For example, you can now call or take pictures, which is something that cannot be done easily on a PC. It is also possible to download many new applications and customize it to your will, which is something that cannot be done on a normal cell phone. History has changed and become more advanced. Meaning great things will come in the

On his birth anniversary, the followers of the faith observe the day by visiting temples, offering prayers, reaffirming their beliefs, meditating and listening to discourses on Mahavira's life and teachings. Mahavira-jayanti is celebrated not only to mark the birthday of Mahavira, but also to inculcate his teachings in one’s life. In Mahayana countries the New Year starts on the first full moon day in January. However, the Buddhist New Year depends on the country of origin or ethnic background of the people. For example, Chinese, Koreans and Vietnamese celebrate late January or early February according to the lunar calendar, whilst the Tibetans usually celebrate about one month later while the Burmese, Cambodian, Sri Lankan and Thai Buddhists celebrate their New Year on this day.

A highlight is the Seder (meaning "order") meal held in each family’s home on the first evening of Pesach, when the story of their deliverance is recounted as narrated in the Haggadah (the Telling, the Story). Matzah (unleavened bread) is eaten throughout the festival, as are other foods that contain no leaven and are symbolic to the struggle. (cont.)

Centennial goes pink on April 12 April 13 is Day of Pink, the international day to celebrate diversity and inclusion to work towards ending homophobia, transphobia and all forms of bullying and discrimination. This year, there are several bolded holy days taking place on April 13. “Equity and inclusion is something that all Peel schools teach throughout the year and discuss with students daily—it is embedded in everything we do,” says Tony Pontes, director of education. “Day of Pink is just one more way for us to ensure students and staff learn, work and develop in environments that are safe, equitable, inclusive, respectful and nurturing for all.”

Day of Pink began when a high school student in Cambridge, Nova Scotia, was bullied with homophobic language because he wore a pink shirt to school. The next day, hundreds of students at his school stood up to bullying and wore pink to school to show their support for equity and

There is no doubt that families play a vital role in helping us achieve this goal. In October 2014, the Peel board sought input from families to help guide the development of resources that help parents and caregivers support their children’s learning. The result is a new Help Your Child online resource centre on the Peel board’s website with the topics families said were important to them.

Visit www.peelschools.org/parents/helpyourchild to explore all resources available to parents.

There you will find easy-to-navigate buttons that connect families to tip sheets and web pages on a number of different topics, including math, homework, special education, EQAO and mental health.

Keeping children safe in and around storm sewers, waterways Rising and fast moving water in lakes, ponds and creeks is increasingly likely during spring. Children playing in and around storm sewers and watercourses, entering storm sewers through the outfalls, and entering storm sewers through access covers is dangerous. The following information will help keep children safe:

• water flows in storm sewers and watercourses are unpredictable and may change quickly

• toxic gases may be present in and around storm sewers and watercourses

• access is restricted, making rescue attempts are difficult

• tragic falls could take place

Please review this information with your children and let them know how dangerous storms sewers and waterways are.
