A Message From The PresidentSpring is here and Zone 3 is in full bloom! Our weather is changing for the better and we’re all ready to get those Porsches rolling. Speaking of which, Jackie Hardy led 14 MSK members on a terrific drive the last day of March to the Beacon Light Tea Room in Bon Aqua. The food was outstanding and the drive down was even better. If you would like to recreate the drive please email me at [email protected] and I will forward Jackie’s turn-by-turn directions. Thanks again Jackie for volunteering to create and lead this great tour!

Musik-Stadt is now in “FULL CONCOURS MODE”. We are less than two months away from our annual concours on May 19 and while many are planning for concours preparation the club is busy with planning as well. Need a primer on car prep and a review of what the judges will be looking for? On April 14 Craig Flamme is conducting a tech session for car preparation following the Open House Joe Questel’s “My Other Garage”. Come to Joe’s Open House at 2932 Logan St (10-2:00) and stay for our concours tech.

Craig Flamme is also conducting two judges training sessions. These will be conducted at Craigs home (8213 Spring Ridge Dr., Nashville 37221) on April 21 and May 12. There is a strong need for volunteers to be timers and judges. At least 15 people are needed. I know what you’re thinking, “I don’t know anything about being a judge”. We can train you in one session to be a competent concours judge. Honestly, while we take our judging seriously we do not approach Porsche Parade concours standards. Come on, help us out.

In addition to our concours there are tons of great events to take advantage of. You received word this week that Porsche Parade event registration opened on Monday. If you can’t make the trip to Lake of the Ozarks is July there are some other perennial events you may consider.

• Spring Thing, our friends in the Smoky Mountain Region are holding their multi-event weekend April 27-29 in Greenville at the General Morgan Inn. Events include concours, TSD Rally, Saturday evening banquet and a Sunday morning autocross. Visit smtpca.org to learn more.

• Appalachian Adventure hosted by the Appalachian Region in Asheville. This multi-event weekend,

August 17-19, features a peoples choice concours, mountain drives, a tech quiz and shopping excursions. This will be an excellent opportunity to escape our summer heat by heading to the mountains.

• Rennfest, Peachstate Regions multi event weekend, is now open for registration. This Labor Day weekend event is extremely popular and is already half sold-out. This event, in its fiftieth year, will be held once again at the Brasstown Resort in Young-Harris, GA. When calling to book a room there, make sure you ask for a room being held in the Porsche Club of America block. Their phone number is 706.379.9900. This event is the closest thing to a Porsche Parade there is. So…it’s not to be missed! Register at www.clubregistration.net.

• A disappointment to us all but Thomas Trissl will not be hosting his terrific Uber Fest this year due to heavy construction in the industrial park where Trissl Sports Cars is located. He hopes to resume the event in 2019.

Finally save the date of June 9 as Porsche of Nashville plans on celebrating the National Porsche Heritage Day / "Sports Car Together Day". This will be an all-day national celebration as a part of the 70th Anniversary of Porsche. The day will end with a party to start at the dealership at 6pm with food and drink as well as other activities. More is sure to follow. But here is a copy of Porsche’s press release on the following page …

PRESS RELEASES

Porsche celebrates 70 years of legendary sports cars

Porsche marks the anniversary of its original car with U.S. and international events

Jan 26, 2018, 3:51pm EST

ATLANTA, Jan. 26, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Seventy years ago, the first Porsche sports car was born, creating a brand synonymous with superb engineering, timeless design, and automotive performance at the very highest level. The first vehicle to bear the Porsche name was registered on June 8, 1948: It was the 356 "No.1" Roadster. The Type 356 turned the sports car dream of Ferry Porsche into a reality. "His vision at that time embodied all of the values that still define the brand to this day," said Oliver Blume, Chairman of the Executive Board of Porsche AG.

"Tradition is a commitment. Without our tradition and without our core values, we would not be where we are today," explained Blume. "We plan to uphold the standard of technical excellence set by Ferry Porsche well into the future. Intelligent dynamic mobility has a great future ahead of it. And we have the solid technological expertise, creative employees, and unique team spirit to be involved. We have what it takes to ensure that the Porsche brand continues to fascinate – even in another 70 years."

Porsche is celebrating this year's anniversary with numerous activities around the world. In the United States, the exhibition "The Porsche Effect" will open February 3 at the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles. On June 9, Porsche will be inviting sports car fans to its "Sports Car Together Day" at many of its sites around the world, including the Porsche Experience Centers in Atlanta and Los Angeles. The Rennsport Reunion VI vintage races and fan event in California from September 27–30 will also celebrate the anniversary.

The history of the Porsche brand begins in 1948. Yet the foundation of the sports car manufacturer is built upon the life's work of his father, Professor Ferdinand Porsche – work which his son Ferry then continued. Ferdinand Porsche had already designed pioneering innovations for the automotive industry as early as the start of the last century. In 1900, he built an electric car with a wheel hub drive known as the Lohner-Porsche, a vehicle on which he would then

base the world's first all-wheel-drive passenger car. In the same year, he created a template for hybrid vehicles with the development of a mixed petrol-electric powertrain. In 1931, Ferdinand Porsche founded his own engineering office. The "Berlin-Rome Car" showcased in 1939 was the beginning of his idea for a sports car bearing the Porsche name, although this dream was only realized by his son Ferry in 1948 with the Type 356.

The successor model to the 356, the truly iconic Porsche 911 designed by the son of Ferry Porsche, Ferdinand Alexander, finally gave the company its breakthrough as one of the leading manufacturers of sports cars in the world, both from a technical and a design perspective. The Porsche 911, presented to the global public for the first time in 1963, has now been built over a million times. "Although the 911 has been consistently developed in the intervening decades and enhanced many times over with new, innovative technologies, no other vehicle has managed to retain its original essence in the same way as the 911," says Blume. "All Porsche models to be developed now and in the future are based on this sports car. As the centerpiece of the brand, the 911 has become the sports car of dreams, winning the collective heart of enthusiasts all over the world."

The future of Porsche sports cars is already coming up to the starting line in the form of the Mission E, its first purely electrically driven technology champion. This concept vehicle combines the distinctive emotional design of a Porsche, exceptional driving performance, and forward-thinking everyday functionality. The four-door model with four individual seats delivers a system performance of over 440 kW (600 hp) and a range of more than 310 miles, acceleration from 0 to 60 in under 3.5 seconds and a charging time of 15 minutes for 80 percent of the battery, using 800-volt fast-charging technology. Porsche has invested around one billion euros in this futuristic project, creating more than 1,200 additional jobs just at Porsche headquarters in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen, where the Mission E will be built. "Porsche will always be Porsche – the leading brand for exclusive, sporty mobility," reinforces Blume.

FINDING AND BUYING THE PERFECT PORSCHE IS NEVER EASYBy Mike Moody

After selling my 2006 Cayman S to a CA guy who needed an Auto-X car, I started my search for a pre-owned 991-911. It only took a couple weeks on CarGuru.com to find the perfect 2013 991 with only 30,000 miles on it, and then another week trying to negotiate with a Mercedes dealer on price – which didn’t go so well. Internet best price and all that stuff! Finally, I talked him down enoughto buy 2 plane tickets so Shirley and I could fly up and drive it back, so sent him a down payment and made travel arrangements. Oh, did I mention it was in middle-of-nowhere (Salisbury), MD?

My first mistake was letting him talk me into flying into Salisbury MD via American Air through Charlotte, even though SW Air had a direct flight to Baltimore where I could rent a car and drive over. We took an Uber to the airport on travel day and had no issues getting to Charlotte. Then we discovered AA had cancelled flight to Salisbury; you know when they can’t fill the seats on a small plane, they just call a mechanical issue and cancel the flight. With no more direct flights to Salisbury, AA said not to worry, they would route us through Philadelphia and then to Salisbury….on stand-by of course! After missing 2 stand-by flights, we knew we had a problem – the biggest of which was the airport was full of guys in Philly Eagles jerseys trying to get home. Yes, NFL game the night before with Eagles & Panthers!

Back to AA service center and we wisely asked “do you have any flights going to Baltimore today?” They did and we did fly to Baltimore where we rented a car

and drove 2 hours in the night across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge to get to a hotel the salesman reserved for us. So after making it to Salisbury about 9pm and checking into the LaQuinta Inn for a $200/night room! Oh yes, big bicycle race next day so all hotels were booked so we paid $200 for a bed and promptly called the nearest pizza delivery for dinner. Fun day – Uber car, 2 flights, rental car, and finally the day is over and we get to see our new car the next day.

Next day, salesman led us to local airport and car rental place, and then drove us to dealership. He was most apologetic and said he would give us a great bag of goodies for our hardship, plus the car of course. Arriving at the local M-B dealer, he dropped us in the lobby to go pull the car around. It was beautiful! First of all, the salesman told me it was guards red, and we like red. Then it turns out to be Amaranth Red Metallic with a black glass sliding sunroof. And yes, that is Shirley’s favorite color since she saw one at Trissl a few years back. After signing all the papers and handing over more money, it was time to get our bonus goodie bag and head home. Goodie bag was a paper bag with 2 M-B coffee cups, 2 M-B plastic sunglasses and a hand full of dealer ink pens. What a deal!

So we said good-by and headed south toward the next Chesapeake Bay Bridge and Tunnel that would take us over to Newport News, VA and Richmond VA where we would overnight with our daughter Karen, and then make the final leg home. Nothing between Salisbury and the bridge/tunnel except for run-down homes, buildings, chicken

processing plants, so lunch was a stop at Mickey D’s. Long exhausting trip but it was worth it to bring home our 10th Porsche and our last one. Love the car, the color, the luxor beige interior, 20” silver/gray wheels, black glass moonroof/sunroof and of course the PDK transmission. No more trips planned

except to take the car to Porsche Parade in the Ozarks this July. Hope to see you there. Pictures below show our car at the dealer on pick-up day, and of course it rained! Next picture is at Martin Fogelmann’s Octubberfest in Florence AL where we won 2nd place in the late model 911 category.
