UPCOMING SERVICESFROM RABBI LAZARUS-KLEIN

In the show Tidying up with Marie Kondo, the host has a simple rule when tidying up your house: “discard everything that does not spark joy.”

This is easier said than done, as we carry emotional connections to our clutter. Things that we have bought along the way, or been given by friends, are part of our lives. To help with this, Kondo suggests we actually have conversations with the objects

themselves, thanking them for their service to us and bidding them farewell from our lives.

Judaism has always recognized the holiness of decluttering, and how very hard it is. That is what Passover is all about. While we think of the Seder as being the center piece of the holiday, it is really the pre-work of clearing the house of chametz (bread crumbs) that is essential. More than a spring cleaning, it is a spiritual cleansing.

Just as there is a Cheshbon HaNefesh, an accounting of the soul, during our High Holy Days, there is a Cheshbon HaBayit, an accounting of our dwelling places on Passover. This is hard work, work that, as Kondo points out, not only takes a physical toll on us, but an emotional one as well. I dread the weeks leading up to the holiday, but once I get started I am grateful to have had an opportunity to bring a spark of joy back into my home. As Kondo suggests on her website, “tidy up your space, transform your life.”

Good luck with all of your cleaning, spiritual and otherwise, and a joyous Passover to you and your family,

“The Sacred Duty of Cleaning Up”

Page 4: April 2019 Adar ll-Nisan 5779 - Congregation Shir Shalom · the food tasty. Cooking for my family Passover week is always an exercise in creativity as I am one of the only ones that

Passover is one of my favorite Jewish holidays for many reasons. One of them is Passover takes place in the spring when plants begin to bloom and nature seems to wake up after winter. There is an exciting, fresh, growing feeling in the air. There are other reasons as well. I find the story of Passover inspirational and

the food tasty. Cooking for my family Passover week is always an exercise in creativity as I am one of the only ones that enjoy Passover foods. Bread is a staple in our house and for my boys, no meal is really a meal without it. So, it is quite a thrill for me if my “kitchen creativity” leads one of my sons to say, ‘that was good, mom”. But it’s really the memories of my childhood that hold this holiday close to my heart. Growing up in Brooklyn, being Jewish was easy. “Jewish” foods were sold everywhere and everyone knew something about the Jewish holidays. Explanations weren’t necessary. Passover always took place at my aunt and uncle’s sixth floor apartment in Queens. The apartment wasn’t large. As a matter of fact, to accommodate all of us, the tables stretched through two rooms. These were big events – lots of family and friends, lots of noise, stories, and fun searching for the afikomen. There was nowhere to go – we were joyfully trapped at the table for hours. Great memories were made.

This year we decided to have smaller model seder groupings so that families can join us and their children in making some wonderful memories. This month’s Tzedek Corp will focus on the environment and sustainability. Families in Ganainu (preschool) will learn all about Passover.

My Thursday office hours are temporarily on hold until June. I am most happy to set aside time to speak with you and would love to hear your thoughts and ideas. Feel free to reach out by email or phone to find a mutually convenient time.

Many Jews and Christians assume that many of the things they take for granted, such as angels and demons, an afterlife complete with reward and punishment, and a final resurrection of the dead, were there from the start. Many of these concepts, however, came to life, or at least to full fruition, in an extraordinary time of political violence, intellectual ferment and social disruption between 250 BCE and 50 CE. Philip Jenkins, distinguished professor of history at Baylor University, writes about this period in his new book Crucible of Faith.

We know from the story of Hanukkah how, in the late second century BCE, Jewish ideas came into conflict with Hellenistic thought. Other ideas and concepts came from places from Babylon to Rome, and an age of turmoil that rivals that of modern times also made old certitudes seem increasingly untenable. Forced to engage with these challenges, Jews

LIBRARY CORNER

The Parent Council for the Shir Shalom Gesher Religious School has been meeting about once a month. All parents are always welcome to join us! Currently there is a Passover chocolate fundraiser going on. If you are looking for kosher for Passover chocolate please let me, or a Religious School family know! Thank you to Kim Goldhirsch for leading this. Our last few meetings we have discussed possible fundraisers. I discussed with Hope Bongiorno about setting a focus and goal for our fundraisers. We are starting to move forward on a Color Fun Run to take place either at the end of this school year, or the beginning of next year. Thank you to Rebecca Greene and Nichole Weinstein for heading up this super fun initiative!!! If you would like to help them with this, please let one of us know! Another idea that was raised was doing a Kosher and Vegetarian Meat Raffle. The viability of doing this is still being researched. Monies raised at fundraisers would either go to a Religious School scholarship fund, or a fund towards the awesome projects happening in our chuggim! The chuggim are educational small groups of various themes that take place during the school year and do things like focused learning on a certain topic i.e.: Shabbat, or cooking. The money for the chuggim will be used for a variety of items, but one in particular that the parents would like to see is the Ganainu Room kitchen turned into a kosher parve/dairy kitchen. This mostly entails purchasing a stove and making the stove ventilated. Research is being done to determine the cost of accomplishing this task. It would be wonderful for our children to be able to cook together!

In addition to fundraising initiatives, we have also had discussions about how we (personally) celebrate holidays, and how to have our children get to know each other, as well as the parents. We

PARENT COUNCIL

incorporated some ideas, including apocalyptic visions, into books that entered the canon, such as Daniel, as well as the universalism that characterizes the book of Ruth, and abandoned others. Many of these strains of thought also went on to influence both nascent Christianity and rabbinic Judaism, and in the end Islam as well.

While Jenkins’ book does not make for light reading and is often challenging, it provides a much-needed overview of a sadly neglected period that contributed enormously to the development of the Abrahamic religions and continues to influence us

to this day.

Crucible of Faith can be obtained through the Buffalo and Erie County Public Library system.

Leslie Jaszczak

discussed at length at our last meeting to have a coffee/tea time right after the small service that takes place Sunday mornings. The coffee/tea time would be for one grade at a time i.e.: 4th grade parents one week, and first grade parents another week. The idea is that if we as parents get to know each other we are more likely to initiate getting together outside of Religious School. Parents feel this is important because if their children have friends at Religious School they are more likely to be excited to attend!

Another initiative we have been working on this year is monthly family fun activities. We had several families join together at Rainbow Rink in November, MLK Day of Service in January, and a couple families went ice skating in February. Mark your calendars our next family activity is after Religious School on March 10th, more information to come regarding what we are doing. Another item discussed was sharing the family contact information by class, so that families can contact other families in their child’s class. Thank you to Hope Bongiorno for sending that right out to our families! I hope parents will utilize this resource to initiate Shabbat dinners, or get togethers!!! Thank you parents for your patience as I learn the ropes of being chair of Parent Council. I know we have great things to come!

Upcoming Parent council meetings: April 7th and May 5th.

The Women of Shir Shalom have two very important annual activities coming up this month.

The first is our spring Rummage Sale on April 7th. Rummage sales are our main source of fundraising, and there are several ways you can help. If you have gently used clothing or household goods that don’t “bring you joy,” you can donate them, so they may bring joy to someone else. Please drop off all items for the sale by Saturday, April 6th at the latest, so that we can make sure everything is “ready to go” before we open the doors on Sunday. We need help with setup on Saturday afternoon (April 6th), workers for the sale on Sunday (April 7th), and cleanup help at the end of the sale, around 1:00 p.m. You can also support the Women of Shir Shalom by shopping at the sale!

Women of Shir Shalom will once again be sponsoring the seder plates at Shir Shalom’s Second Night Passover Seder. We will need help at temple on the morning of Saturday, April 20th, to make charoset and assemble the plates. We will also need volunteers to boil eggs at home ahead of time. Please text Marina Finkelstein at 583-5147 or email [email protected] if you would like to help.

Looking ahead to next month, May brings our annual Women’s Shabbat on May 10th. If you are a member of the Women of Shir Shalom and are interested in participating, please text Jill Hamilton at 418-2307, or email [email protected].

Women of Shir Shalom do a very important mitzvah each year - preparing seder plates for the Congregation Shir Shalom Second Night Seder, which this year falls on Saturday, April 20th. We will be gathering at temple that morning to prepare the plates. “CARE-RING”

Planned Giving provides people who have been synagogue members an opportunity to recognize CSS. A Planned Gift can be as simple as a bequest, or more complex, providing both income and tax advantages for the donor.

You also can endow our future by naming rights. Various areas in the building can be named with your family’s name, a legacy which would last forever and also be enjoyed by you today.

If you would like more information, please contact Joanne Marquisee, Executive Director, at 633-8877.

Please share your pictures with us!

Do you have a picture of an event that you attended at temple; a picture of a family Shabbat you had at home; an interesting picture from a meeting; or other photos that you’d like to share with us?

If so, please send them to: [email protected]

Can you help a fellow congregant with a ride to Temple?

We have members who are no longer able to drive but would like to come to Temple for services and other events. If you can provide a congregant with a ride to Temple, please call the CSS office at 633-8877. Thank you for this mitzvah!

Student Community Service Hours Available

Students, 16 years of age or older, can receive school community service credit by working in the kitchen for Bingo on Monday nights. Contact Chris Cohan at [email protected] if interested.

Any Reason is a Good Reason to Sponsor an Oneg!

Sponsoring an Oneg Shabbat after Friday Erev Shabbat Services is a lovely way to honor someone you love, to celebrate an upcoming simcha, or to remember a loved one in a special way. For information, please contact Joanne Marquisee at 633-8877 or [email protected].

The CSS Chesed Caring Committee wants you to know that we take care of our members in a very special way; namely, by providing a meal for families who: have a loved one just returning home from the hospital; are experiencing the birth of a new baby; or are observing Shiva. All we need is a call from someone in the family to let us know that one of the above situations exists, and we will provide a delicious meal for the immediate family.

We also are looking for volunteers who would be able to pick up the meals and deliver them to the recipient’s home. This does not have to be a long-term commitment. The more volunteers we have, the fewer times you will be called to help.

We recognize that some members, who are unable to leave their homes for one reason or another or who live alone, may appreciate a phone call once a week from another caring congregant. We are reaching out to both those who would like to hear from someone, to chat, to visit on the phone, and those who are willing to make the phone calls.

Please let us know if you want this service, or if you are able to provide this service. We will explain the details. It’s easy, convenient, and it’s a MITZVAH. All you need is a phone and a few minutes a week.

To request a meal be provided to a member or to volunteer, please call Adrienne Crandall at 875-7061,

I am often asked what can be done about climate change in light of the current administration in Washington’s denial of climate change? There is much state governments can do. For example, California has mandated solar panels and solar roofs on new homes, while New York set goals for a significant reduction in energy usage by 2025. The aim is to reduce greenhouse gases, i.e., carbon dioxide and methane, emissions which are the primary drivers of climate change. Then there is us as individuals, if we take personal responsibility, there is much we can do.

I thought it might be worthwhile to reiterate some of the simple actions we can take to fight climate change. I don’t pretend this list is all inclusive, but it will certainly serve as a guide.

The graph shows the approximate breakdown of the sources of greenhouse gas in the US. We can have influence over each of those categories.

Transportation. Automobiles are one of the biggest sources of greenhouse gas, but one we can impact fairly easily. Hybrid vehicles can reduce emissions around 40%, plug-in hybrids around 50-60%, and all electric vehicles around 70%-75%. Selecting one of these types of vehicles is the right choice.

Electricity and Residential. I combined these two to reflect what we can do at home:

Replace bulbs with LEDs. First results from the Men’s Group replacing the lights in the office, part of the open area, and the kitchen indicate savings of more than $200/mo. The price of LED bulbs has come way down.

Buy Energy Star appliances. Pay attention to efficiency.

Insulation, repairing drafts around windows, and installing smart thermostats can save 20% or more of your home energy useage, therby reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Renewable energy. You don’t have to buy solar panels for renewable energy at home. You can purchase Renewable Energy Certificates through your utility that gives you credit for selecting renewable energy as your energy source. Purchasing these certificates encourages the construction of wind and solar farms.

Agriculture. Turns out food animals emit methane which is an even more virulent form of greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide. Eating more vegetables and less meat offers more than health benefits. (This is the one I struggle with the most. I love my steak.)

Industry. Where possible, consider companies that have embraced energy efficiency and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. If enough of us do this, we can influence industry to make better choices.

The most important thing is to consider your choices and think about energy uses and sources when taking actions such as purchasing cars and new appliances. If we all do this, we can truly make a difference despite what climate change deniers might do or tell you. It’s a matter of taking responsibility for your actions.
