Beloved Readers,

Let us stay connected…

thThe 29 convocation was a proud moment for the graduates, parents and teachers who have

played their part in the academic journey with focus and determination. Graduation is a time

of celebration and triumph for the graduands and marks the beginning of a new phase with

ample opportunities in their professional lives.

The world social work day observed with the theme, 'Promoting the Importance of Human

Relationships' was the need of the hour besides the many academic and sports events that

have been organized in the campus. In a world dominated by technology, individualism and

the changing nature of community, it is essential to emphasize the importance of our

relationships to one another and the need for a supportive society. We are born with great

needs for love, friendship & belonging and often reach out for support from those around us

in our day to day lives. The level of support we receive is based on the strength of the

relationships we have created throughout our lives. Let us recognize the dignity of fellow

human beings and treat them with respect & compassion to maintain happy, healthy

relationships.

Indian researchers have developed a biodegradable film using lotus stem starch, whey protein concentrate and psyllium husk that has high

structural integrity and low solubility.

Starch can form a continuous matrix and has been considered an important polymer due to low cost and renewability. But films made from

starch alone have low mechanical strength and high-water vapor content. In this study, researchers used starch along with whey protein and

psyllium husk (Isabgol) to make a biodegradable film.

The stem of lotus plant was used as a source of starch. It contains 10 to 20 percent starch of total fresh weight of the stem. Studies also show

that different chemical modifications to starch can improve its physical, barrier, mechanical, and form properties. In this study, the researchers

performed two modifications to lotus rhizome starch: oxidation and cross-linking.

Whey protein is a by-product of cheese manufacturing. The polymer interaction between protein and starch can create a continuous film

that has improved properties. Psyllium husk has a highly gelatinous or viscous consistency and has been used as an ingredient to develop

films.

“To minimize the use of petroleum-based plastics, there has been an increase in research to develop biodegradable packaging materials using

natural agro-based polymers”, said Charanjit S Riar, Scientist at Sant Longowal Institute of Engineering & Technology (Punjab) and a

member of the research team.

The biodegradable film was made in two steps. The psyllium husk was first kept in water for 30 minutes, then heated in boiling water

for 20 minutes, cooled and blended with whey protein, rhizome starch and glycerol. The whole mixture was heated at 90 degrees and

then poured in Teflon coated moulds. The moulds were then heated, peeled off and stored in special containers to prevent exposure to

moisture.

Different properties of these films were then measured to assess it. Thickness is an important parameter used to infer the mechanical and

barrier properties of a film. The films made with modified starch (oxidized and cross-linked) were thicker, had higher moisture content and

tensile strength, and lower solubility compared to films made with non-modified starch.

“These films are white & transparent and can be used to visualize the products that are packaged, hence promoting higher product

acceptability by consumer”, explained Riar. Such biodegradable films can find application in food coatings, encapsulations, probiotic coatings,

drug delivery systems and edible packaging materials.

Bits 'n' BytesSmartphone OEMs since past couple of years have realised the fact that as app sizes and the files download increase, users with smartphones

featuring 16 GB or 32 GB inbuilt storage (or any other handsets without microSD card support) face a good amount of space crunch. This

goes for both iPhone and Android users. There are ways through which one can survive with limited storage smartphones.

One can delete those clicked images and videos from the smartphone and rely on services like Google Photos as it gives virtually unlimited

storage space for back up of such content.

Android/iOS: Delete unwanted files

There are certain email attachments or some other files that we often download. One can get rid of that as those files stay unused after some

time. They will always be there in the emails. So one should delete it from the smartphones.

Android/iOS: Delete apps if not needed

One can check which of the apps have not been used in a while and might not be using in near future, and simply uninstall them from the

handset. This can free up a large amount of space as the cache files saved for the app are also out.

Android/iOS: Delete videos downloaded via streaming apps

While deleting images and videos shot using the handset is one of the solutions, the other one could be deleting videos that have been

downloaded via the streaming apps. There are certain apps that are used to download episodes and movies for offline viewing. These can be

removed once viewed.

Android: Clear that cache

Android users need to give special attention to the cached files. If we do not clean it up regularly, the handset can save several GB worth of

cached data. This can be cleared from the Settings app.

Android: Use 'Lite' versions of apps

As for the iOS users, they can simply delete all the images and videos others send them on platforms such as iMessage. iOS users can tap and

hold an image inside a thread, tap on the 'more' option at the bottom and delete all the images at once. Since Android is a platform that has the

most number of 'Lite' versions of apps, for instance, Facebook Lite, Messenger Lite, Twitter Lite and more, one can use it instead of the

regular apps that take more space.

iOS: Delete all unwanted iMessage images at once

Unlike what Android smartphone OEMs offer, Apple gives a chance to uninstall pre-installed apps such as Podcasts, iBooks, Reminders and

more. Uninstall them, save some extra space. This feature is present for iPhones running iOS 10 or later versions.

When Mike Robinson the owner of a small Canadian company called WeatherSolve Structures, followed his wife, Suzanne's suggestion and

got every employee a plant, something extraordinary happened: productivity shot up by 30 percent. Studies suggests there are solid reasons

for why more plants at workplace might have positive effect on job performance.

The couple set up a human-plant 'speed dating' scenario, where each employee was asked to approach a table full of plants and choose the one

they thought would love being their desk companion the most.

"So you have to put yourself in the spot of the plant, as it were, and say, 'Which person do I want to be my new friend?'" Robinson explained.

Once each employee had chosen a new green buddy, they received the plant along with a small sign saying "My friend is ..." with their name.

One company's cute plant story is not the same as a carefully controlled study, but there are solid scientific reasons to think Robinson's

experience is not just some adorable tale. Other companies are having the same idea, including Amazon, a company known for its data and

results-driven business decisions. Amazon recently invested in an addition to their Seattle headquarters dubbed "The Spheres": three domes

filled with 40,000 plants.

They were not just gunning for design awards. Instead, the company is familiar with the mountain of research showing that exposure to

nature, even just in the form of a potted plant, can reduce stress, double your attention span, increase happiness, and boost productivity and

creativity. Even just looking at a green roof for all of 40 seconds has been shown to cause a measurable uptick in productivity among office

dwellers.

If just glancing at something green can do that, imagine what adding a few plants to work space could do.
