Beloved in Christ!

Today heaven and earth, angels and men proclaim to the whole universe the most profound of all

truths: Christ is risen! The power of this salutation is felt by all of us, from the youngest to the oldest, as we respond: Truly, really, indeed Christ is risen! In all languages, we solemnly proclaim this truth using the words of the Gospel for Pascha: “and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth (Jn 1:14). We are all lifted up with unspeakable joy and are given new life through Christ’s Resurrection—for He rises and lives in order that we too might live and rise in Him and with Him.

Let us rise at early dawn and bring to our Master a hymn instead of myrrh…

(continued from previous page)

The radiance of the resurrection of the Sun of righteousness was first seen by the myrrh-bearing women in the darkness of a night filled with disappointment, despair, and fear. With tears in their eyes, they carry myrrh for the deceased, worrying about whether someone will be there to roll aside the great stone at the entrance to the tomb. Each one of us, having experienced the death and funeral of someone close to us, can understand the pain in the hearts of the myrrh-bearing women as they go to bid a final farewell to their Teacher. But lo, they come upon a different, unexpected reality. An angel in a white garment proclaims to them: “Do not be alarmed. You seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has risen; he is not here. See the place where they laid him” (Mk 16:6).

Our Paschal Matins calls on us to “rise up,” that is, to awaken from sleep and be open to the Divine unexpected. To rise up means tо look out for that which is true, genuine, and authentic: look to recognize the

Truth, look to not be fooled by that which is false and deceitful; look to encounter the Risen One. His radiance reveals to us the truth about Himself, about that which is worthy of our efforts, labours, and suffering, which is worthy of our action as Church, as a community and as an entire people. The truth that Christ is risen is as real and certain as the fact that the sun will rise and the day will take the place of the night. The Resurrection of Christ as the Sun of righteousness “enlightens life” for us. It shows us not only the true meaning of what the myrrh-bearing women were seeking but also the meaning of every person’s life, suffering, and even death: we are created for resurrection in Christ and our life on earth is an awakening to the expectation of this resurrection. Let the words of the Psalmist be our song in light of the Resurrection: “Oh sing to the LORD a new song; sing to the LORD, all the earth! Sing to the LORD, bless his name; tell of his salvation from day to day” (Ps 96:1-2).

And we shall see Christ, the Sun of righteousness…

We live in a cultural world of fakery and untruth, of false commodities and deceptive ideologies. The age of post-truth is upon us. Truth is, it would seem, manufactured according to an individual’s private interests, “on special order,” with no connection to what is actually happening in regards to entire nations, cultures, and individual persons.

For a person today, truth is ceasing to have value. Therefore, all Christians who believe that Christ is truly risen should ask themselves: is truth still important for me? Is it possible that sometimes I neglect the truth because it is more comfortable for me to live without it, to not be bothered by searching for it? Am I able to be truthful with myself about my own life and my shortcomings, or do I attribute them to others and blame others for my own sins?

The environment we live in today, in the midst of “fakery and deceit,” is a veritable night for humanity and, essentially, the death and burial of the human spirit. Without truth, humanity dies like a flower without the

sun. The prophet Isaiah cautions against such evil, saying: “Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter! Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes, and shrewd in their own sight!” (Is 5:20-21).

To celebrate Pascha, the Resurrection of our Lord, in the midst of such a night is to be a servant of Truth, a torch for the Sun of righteousness—Christ, who enlightens our life. The example of the myrrh-bearing women is a call to us to search for the Risen Saviour. The myrrh which they carry to anoint the body of Jesus, laid in the tomb, is a symbol of our personal duty to search for truth and move toward it, serve it, bear witness to it before the powerful of the world, even at the risk of our own life. Bearing witness to the truth—this is the paschal calling of every Christian.

The Truth has its own power. It overcomes

falsehood as triumphantly as Christ conquered death, as light dispels darkness, or the sun drives out the remnants of the night. With the courage to live in truth, we can become witnesses to the power of Christ’s Resurrection. It is a truth that must be shown with our very lives rather than defended merely with words, following the example of the myrrh-bearing women, who persisted in their witness before the Apostles, even when these would not believe.

Who enlightens the life of all.

As a people, we often have experienced the murderous power of falsehood. We have been robbed and are still being robbed of the truth about our past. False ideologies have been forced and are being forced upon us in order to destroy our present. In times of pre-election campaigns, we have been the target of deception and are still being fooled, so as to rob us of our future. The war which our nation is waging is, in reality, nothing less than a war against falsehood, lies,

and all that they bring about in the lives of individuals and society, in international relations, and in the very existence of the global community. This is why the good news of Pascha-day is so important for us: Christ is truly risen! The teaching of our Lord and Saviour is for us a beacon and a signpost. Indeed, the struggle against falsehood begins in the depth of the human heart. The chief Apostle Peter wrote this appeal: “Having purified your souls by your obedience to the truth for a sincere brotherly love, love one another earnestly from a pure heart, since you have been born again, not of perishable seed but of imperishable, through the living and abiding word of God” (1 Pt 1:22-23).

Let us, therefore, live in the light of the Risen One, before whom no darkness or falsehood can stand. Let us believe in the truth that is Christ and serve the truth in all spheres of human life—and Ukraine with its people will be invincible. Every initiative built on lies will collapse, as it was with the Communist empire of evil. Let us

build our nation on truth and justice, no matter how bitter and difficult that may seem. The Risen Christ has the power to enlighten our life and raise us up to a new future.

Indeed today, in light of the authentic Truth that is Christ we must examine our past and, with trust in the Risen Saviour, we must order our present. Precisely now, by the power of his victory against falsehood, we must build our future—one that is not illusionary, dark, and sorrowful, but brilliant and joyful, in the fullness of life, which we have in the Lord.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ! In this bright, joyful day I wish to greet you all with the Pascha of our Lord. May the light of Christ, the Sun of Righteousness, enlighten all of you to responsible service of the truth and grant you courage and perseverance in the face of dark and evil falsehood. To all of you, in Ukraine and throughout the world, I send you my heartfelt greeting together with sincere prayers. To all the soldiers at the front lines and their families, to

all refugees and to those who are on the occupied territories, to all captives and prisoners for the sake of their conscience, to the young and old, to those in good and in poor health—I wish all of you the joy of life that is grounded in the truth of God’s infinite love for us. I embrace you with fatherly love and send you my sincere wishes for a blessed Easter feast, a tasty sharing of our traditional blessed egg, and a Paschal joy that is full of light.

The grace of our Risen Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God the Father, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all.

Christ is risen! – Truly, He is risen!

Give from the Heart for the Inauguration of Ministry

of Archbishop Borys Gudziak Glory to Jesus Christ! The Ukrainian Catholic community in the United States is rejoicing at the news that Pope Francis has appointed a new Metropolitan-Archbishop for the Archeparchy of Philadelphia on February 18, 2019. A native of Syracuse, NY, Bishop Borys Gudziak, will be formally enthroned on Tuesday, June 4, 2019 in the Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Philadelphia, PA. You are cordially invited to join us for this moment of prayer, communion and outreach, uniting bishops, clergy, religious and faithful as brothers and sisters in Christ. I am writing to you today to ask you to help us raise money for the start of Archbishop Borys’s ministry. An eight-day period of events is planned for his enthronement in thanksgiving to God for providing our Archeparchy with a new spiritual shepherd. This program named “Heart to Heart” will take place in Philadelphia, PA and in Washington, DC from June 2nd to 9th. It should spiritually encourage participants in an enduring way and be capacity building for the archeparchy: •Praying for the Descent of the Holy Spirit to foster our relationship with God and our neighbor— “Heart to Heart”; •Promoting and nurturing relations within the Archeparchy and Metropolia, with the Archdiocese in Philadelphia, the city’s Ukrainian-Americans and with the local community at large, with our brothers and sisters from other eparchies, countries, rites, and Churches; •Engaging the youth “heart to heart,” putting young people at the center of the Church’s mission. Recognizing the rich legacy of our ancestors and handing it on, enhanced, to a new generation.

Every year during lent, St John’s Religious Education Students (Northampton, PA) collect food from our Parish and pack it up and take it to our local Food Bank in Northampton PA. The children unpack the food and stock the shelves of the food bank as part of their almsgiving during lent.

This year the students collected food and stocked the shelves of the food bank on Tuesday-April 2, 2019. We learned that there are nearly 480 familes this year who will benefit from the food collection. This number has climbed from 375 families in 2018. We encourage our religious education children to engage in the tripartite observances of fasting,

Let’s review something we have already learned about The Catechism of the Ukrainian Catholic Church: Christ—Our Pascha. It is organized into three main parts. I hope you have them memorized. Let’s turn to the Table of Contents and check out “The Faith of the Church” sec-tion. It is easy to find since it is the first section. We see that section I and II includes what we believe about the Trinity. We see that section III

is divided into an “A” part, a “B” part and a “C” part. Today we will take a look at section III B. This section is all about Our Lord Jesus Christ and how He came down to earth, proclaimed the Kingdom of God, suffered, died and rose from the dead on the third day. He did all this because He loves us. Let’s take a close look at the section called “Pascha” beginning on page 78. That in-cludes paragraph numbers 215—235. Remember that:

In Paragraph 215, we learn that the word “Pascha” comes from the Hebrew word meaning to pass by or to pass through — just like the word “Passover.” In Paragraph 217 we hear the story of God’s People in the Old Testament They were slaves in Egypt. Pharaoh would not let them go but kept them in slavery. Because of this, God sent an “angel of death” to take the lives of

the first-born of all the Egyptians. God’s people, the Israelites, were told by Moses to put lamb’s blood on their doors. This was a sign to the angel to “pass over” the houses of God’s people. The Israelites were saved from this terrible plague. The lamb’s blood saved them just like the blood of Jesus saves us. Finally, Pharaoh let the Jewish people go. They escape their slavery by “passing through“ the Red Sea to a new life by a great miracle. They were saved from Pharaoh’s army. The passing over of the angel of death, and the passing through the Red Sea are two things the Jewish people cele-brate on Passover.

We can also celebrate all these beautiful stories of God’s love and mercy. But the most important thing we celebrate is Our Lord’s Resurrection from the dead.

The Descent into Hades Interesting Things for those Willing to look

We see many icons similar to this one on Pascha. Sometimes we call this icon the Resurrection of Christ but it actually has better names than that. It can be called "The Descent into Hades.” or “The Harrowing of Hades.” It is really showing what happened on Holy Saturday. It shows what took place after Our Lord died on the cross but before he rose from the dead.

Hades is sometimes called “the place of the dead” or the “underworld” or the “Bosom of Abraham”. You might even hear the Hebrew word for Hades which is “Sheol. It is the place where the good people of the Old Testament went to wait for Our Lord to save them. Remember, the Old Testament people died before Jesus died to save us. They had to wait. Their bodies were in the tomb but their souls waited for Our Lord to lead them from darkness to Paradise. You might hear your Western friends talk about Our Lord descending into “hell.“ But what they really mean is Hades.

So, just what exact ly is Hades?

1. We see our Lord, victorious over death. He has descended into

Hades to lead to Heaven the good people who were waiting there.

2. We see our Lord standing victoriously on the gates of Hades (2A) which he has broken down. We see keys, locks and chains (2B) on the ground which Jesus has broken to set us free.

3. We see Jesus pulling (3A) Adam and (3B) Eve by their wrists from their graves. He pulls all the other good people along with them and takes them to be with Him in Heaven. He pulls them by the wrists, not hands, to show us that Our Lord is doing all the work, not Adam and Eve.

4. We see a big halo around Jesus. This is called a "mandorla.” It is often oval or almond-shaped. His clothes are shining bright with His glory.

5. The people on the left of these icons are (6A) King David, (6B) King Solomon and (6C) St. John the Forerunner. Sometimes we see (6D) Moses and the prophets on the right.

6. We see the letters IC XC which is the abbreviation for Jesus Christ. The squiggly lines over the letters means it is an abbreviation.

7. We see angels holding a cross and a chalice reminding us of our salvation and God’s love and mercy.

♪ On Pascha we will joyfully sing, ♪ “Christ is risen from the dead, trampling death by death,

and to those in the tombs, giving life.”

Holidays/Feast Day

The History of Pysanky The colorful art of decorating EASTER EGGS, or PYSANKY, has been a Ukrainian tradition for over ten centuries.

At one time, the egg was associated with pagan rituals and superstitions, symbolizing the release of the earth from the shackles of winter into spring; with its promise of new hope, new life, health and prosperity. In 988 AD when Ukraine accepted Christianity, the decorating of eggs took on a deep religious meaning. The PYSANKA commemorated the Resurrection of Christ, and a promise of eternal life. The pagan superstitions were replaced by religious beliefs and legends.

As for the origin of the pysanky, , from the Hutzuls comes a story of the Blessed Virgin Mary. They say that the first PYSANKY were decorated by the tears of the Blessed Virgin Mary, who was taking eggs to Pontius Pilate as a ransom for her son. Climbing the stairs, she tripped, and the pysanky scattered all over the world.

Both PYSANKY and KRASHANKY are believed to have superrnatural powers. KRASHANKA are hard-boiled eggs dyed a solid color that are eaten for Easter breakfast after being blessed along with other foods for the Easter meal. KRASHANKA comes from the Ukrainian word kraska meaning color. The shells of the KRASHANKY are placed in thatched roofs to turn away high winds and fires, also under the beehives to insure a good supply of honey and in the fields to protect and enhance the crops.

PYSANKY, the richly decorated raw eggs, are never eaten. They are kept in the home from year to year as decorations and as protection from evil, fire and lightning. On Easter morning, friends exchange pysanky that have been blessed to commemorate Christ’s teachings of peace and love.

The word PYSANKA comes from the Ukrainian word pysaty which means to write. PYSANKY are decorated by a complicated dye process similar to Batik. Melted beeswax is

applied with a stylus, which is called a kistka or pysaltse to a fresh egg, raw, and clear of blemishes. The egg is dipped into a succession of dye baths, starting from the lightest, usually yellow, and ending with the darkest, typically black. Between each dipping, wax is applied over areas where the preceding color is to remain. After all the designing is complete, the wax is melted off and a hard glaze is applied. Bees wax is used because it stays liquid longer than paraffin, is more pliable, and has an adhering quality; and, of course bee-keeping was very common, so a large natural supply was on hand.

Although no two PYSANKY are exactly alike, there are certain designs and methods of arranging them. Individuality is achieved by varying combinations of designs and colors. The designs or motifs may be divided into three categories: geometric, plant and animal. Motifs of all three categories are usually combined in one design.

The geometric motifs are the same as

found in many forms of primitive art, but their use in PYSANKY gives them specific names and symbolic meanings. Ribbons and belts that encircle the egg with no beginning or end symbolize eternity. Triangles symbolize trios, such as the circle of life of birth, life, death; the Holy Trinity, and the natural elements of fire, air, and water. Stars once symbolized the pagan gods, and now stand for life, growth and good fortune. The cross appears in many forms and symbolizes the four corners of the world, and Christianity.

The plant motifs are stylized flowers, leaves, and branches; and they symbolize love, charity, good-will, strength, virility, health and a bountiful harvest. Pine trees symbolize eternal youth, strength and health.

Of the three types, animal motifs are the most difficult to draw. They appear, then, less frequently than either the geometric or plant motifs. Reindeer and horses are placed in open

spaces in the design, and symbolize wealth and prosperity. Birds are mostly depicted at rest. Hens, which symbolize fertility and the fulfillment of wishes, are often placed on branches. All drawings of insects are called butterflies, and are the symbol of the Resurrection.

Design motifs and colors can be traced to different areas in Ukraine, most which have been modernized due to the natural evolution of the art. Traditional pysanka designs from centuries past have been almost lost, but the technique lives on. The designs we now create, calling Traditional, are actually found in the Diaspora and not truly historical designs. The ancient-looking brown and

black designs, called TRYPILLIAN, are really a very new creation, but emanate basic natural symbolism.

The eggs, covered with symbols, are dyed in warm colors dominated by red, the life-giving substance blood, stands for love and happiness. Other colors are yellow, the color of ripe crops, honey, amber, gold represents the moon and wished for a good harvest. Green symbolizes the growth power of plants. Brown and black, the Mother Earth. White symbolizes purity.

We now buy are colors or dyes that are chemically produced, but historically dyes were made from dried plants, roots, berries and bark;

The tradition of the Ukrainian Easter Egg has been passed down from mother to daughter to many, many generations; and today, our heritage provides the world with Easter Eggs that are truly works of art.

Our Catechism, Christ Our Pascha, teaches us about the Resurrection:

Foretelling His death, Christ also proclaims His Resurrection from the dead. He identifies the three-day sojourn of the prophet Jonah in the belly of the whale as the sign of His Resurrection (see Mt 12:40). Christ will rise “on the third

day in accordance with the Scriptures” (1 Cor 15:4): “After they have flogged Him, they will kill [the Son of Man], and on the third day He will rise again” (Lk 18:33). Christ likens His Death and Resurrection to the destruction

and rebuilding of the Jerusalem temple: “Destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up ... But He was speaking of the temple of His body” (Jn 2:19, 21).

By the miraculous raising of Jairus’ daughter (see Lk 8:41-42, 49-56), the raising of the widow’s son in Nain (see Lk 7:11-16), and the raising of His friend Lazarus (see Jn 11:1-57), Christ gradually prepared the apostles for His own Resurrection. Christ refers to human death as sleep: “Go away, for the girl is not dead but sleeping” (Mt 9:24). Death is not the end of life but a falling asleep; humankind is not dead, it has fallen asleep. The Church also refers to Christ’s death in the same way: “In the flesh you fell asleep as a mere mortal.” Saint John of Damascus unveils the meaning of Christ’s death: “Although He died as man. and His holy soul was severed from his immaculate body, yet His divinity remained inseparable from both, I mean, from His soul and His body.” The death of Christ is life-giving: Christ Himself permitted death to hold Him, so that He might finally conquer it, and grant new life.

By death on a cross, Christ descends into Hades, to the place of the dead. In Christ’s descent into Hades, the

Our Catechism, Christ Our Pascha, teaches us about the Resurrection:

(continued from previous page)

Church hymns the power of the Resurrection: “Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?” (1 Cor 15:55). The icon of the descent of Christ into Hades portrays Him in the bright garments of the new creation. The light-bearing Christ dispels the gloom of death, scatters the darkness of Hades in order to find Adam and Eve. Together with Adam, Christ brings forth out of the shadow of death those who awaited Him, the righteous ones of the Old Testament.

The descent of Christ into Hades completes the salvation of the entire world, “heaven, earth, and the world beneath.” In His Incarnation, God descends from the heavenly to the earthly, and through death He further descends into the very depths of the underworld, to fill all things with Himself. “You were bodily in the tomb, in Hades with your soul as God, in Paradise with the thief, and enthroned with the Father and the Spirit. O Christ, you fill all things but are contained by none.” By dying and descending into Hades, Christ the God-

man reveals Himself as the Resurrection and the Life: He awakens Adam from the sleep of sin and leads him into Paradise. Therefore, he “who apprehends the mystery of the cross and the burial apprehends the inward essences of created things; while he who is initiated into the inexpressible power of the Resurrection apprehends the purpose for which God first established everything.”In the liturgical sticheras, the Church sings of the tomb of Christ, sealed and guarded by the soldiers, as a treasury into which was placed the true treasure—Christ. Christ, the Sun of Righteousness, went down into the tomb in order to come forth from it—to rise up. Just as Christ in the Incarnation came forth from the womb of Mary, so also in the Resurrection He came forth from the womb of the earth. He went down into the earth like Adam - dust of the earth; but He came forth from it, for as the incorruptible One to dust He returned not. “The tomb received Him, but could not hold the Word captive.” And so the sign of death

became the fountain of Resurrection. What was once death-bearing now becomes life-bearing. “As man He was laid in the sepulchre, and as God He destroyed Hades and set free the souls. As man He was sealed in the sepulchre, and as God He went forth, leaving the seals unbroken.” The empty tomb announces the Good News of the Resurrection: “Tell us, unbelievers, where is He whom you had placed in the grave and sealed with a stone? Gives us His body, O deniers of life. Give us the buried one or else believe in the Resurrection!”

Angels announced to the myrrh-bearing women: “Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here, but has risen” (Lk 24:5-6). The Resurrection from the dead is the victory over bodily corrup¬tion: “Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over Him” (Rom 6:9). In the Resurrection, the body of Christ is new and glorified, free

from earthly limitations of time and space. Precisely because of this, the Resurrection of Christ is the revelation of God’s new creation. On Sunday, the first day after the Sabbath, the Church celebrates the Resurrection of Christ as the first day of the new creation.

The Resurrection of Christ is the guarantee of our own resurrection: “Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who have died. For since death came through a human being, the resurrection of the dead has also come through a human being; for as all die in Adam, so

all will be made alive in Christ” (1 Cor 15:20-22). The faith of the Church is entirely based on the Resurrection of Christ: “If Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins” (1 Cor 15:17-18). “For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with Him those who have died” (1 Thes 4:14).

At the divine services of Great and Holy Friday, the Church venerates the Shroud (in Ukrainian, plashchanytsia) as a sign of Christ’s death. The service of Jerusalem Matins (Matins of Holy Saturday) takes place

before the Shroud. The hymnography mourns the One who has died in the hope of the coming Resurrection: “Weep not for me, O Mother ... for I shall rise.”

During the Paschal Midnight Office, the Shroud is transferred from the tomb of the Lord to the holy Altar. The faithful leave the church with lit candles and process three times around the church. Before the doors of the church, to the sound of the Paschal Troparion, “Christ is risen from the dead, trampling death by death, and to those in the tombs giving life,” the priest opens

the doors of the church knocking with his hand-cross. The faithful enter the church, glorifying the Risen Christ, and like the myrrh-bearing women of the Paschal morning—the first witnesses of the Resurrection—they bring the good news of the Resurrection to the whole world: “This is the day of Resurrection! Let us be illumined by the feast! Let us embrace each other. Let us call brothers and sisters even those that hate us, and forgive all by the Resurrection, and so let us cry out: Christ is risen!” (#228-235)

PASTORAL LETTER OF HIS BEATITUDE SVIATOSLAV TO YOUTH ON PALM SUNDAY

If, therefore, the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. Jn 8:36

Beloved in Christ Youth in Ukraine and abroad!

With great joy, as every year, on the occasion of Palm Sunday commemorating Jesus’ triumphal entry in Jerusalem, I wish to address you with this pastoral message. For indeed youth, in the words of Pope Francis, is the divine “now” of our Church and people to whom God wants to reveal His presence, His mercy, and His salvation. As Christ did then, when He entered into His royal city and inaugurated the triumphant coming of His Kingdom in humble service, so also in His eternal “now” through you He wishes to carry His light and His hope into the world. The future depends on your openness to Christ, your sensitivity to the living reality of your Church and people, and your ability to take on responsibility for yourselves and the world.

According to recent sociological surveys, the majority of young Ukrainians see freedom

as the most important value in their life. It should be pointed out that this is also the position of a great part of the adult population. For post-Soviet Ukrainian society, such a shifting of values can be seen as a real breakthrough. Indeed, after decades of captivity and bloody communist terror, the freedom-loving spirit of our ancestors has awoken, a spirit which until now no enemy could break or extinguish. This is not surprising, for true freedom gives us the possibility to express our dignity, to fulfil our noble aspirations and goals. It enables us to feel free from all kinds of enslavement so that we might live in truth and create what is beautiful and good. As my predecessor, His Beatitude Lubomyr, aptly stated: “freedom is the possibility to create the good.”

As the year 2013 drew to a close, they sought to deprive us of the possibility to fulfil our national dream—the dream for a free, united, European Ukraine. And it is not by chance that opposing forces chose as their target none

other than the youth. Church bells awoke our conscience, and on the Maidan, with great cost, we defended our right to do good in freedom, to live in liberty on our God-given land. Among the heroes of the Heavenly Hundred were our colleagues—students, sportsmen, volunteers, young parents. From the divine eternal “now,” they look down on us today in order to once again by the bells of our conscience awaken us to sensitivity and responsibility. Today our freedom is being preserved before the Russian aggressor by those fighting in the Eastern part of Ukraine at great cost and personal sacrifice. We have no right to stab them in the back.

Beloved in Christ! Freedom is not merely a human value, of which no one has the right to deprive us. True freedom is a gift from God which we received in Jesus Christ. St. Paul reminds us: “for freedom Christ has set us free,” and he immediately cautions us, “stand firm, therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery” (Gal 5:1). Entering into the

capital city of Jerusalem, the Lord brings the good news of salvation, the good news of freedom. This freedom he proposes not as one who enslaves and oppresses. Throughout our national history, especially in the last century, we were visited many times by “liberators” who, hiding behind deceptive slogans about equality and freedom, brought with them terror, destruction, and death. Christ, on the other hand, in humble service by which He gave His life on the cross for our liberation and freedom, becomes the source and foundation of authentic divine freedom, which brings peace, gives hope, calls to growth. “For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh…” (Gal 5:13). This call to growth in freedom is at the same time a call to mature responsibility. For today the enemy of our salvation—personal and national—once again seeks to lull our sensitivity. He wants us to see freedom as a right without personal effort, for us to “go with the

flow,” while setting aside high aspirations and ideals.True freedom is not possible without responsibility. Freedom without responsibility, in fact, becomes a blind and destructive force, а recklessness that closes its eyes to that which has been achieved thus far, destroys the present good—personal and common—and places in doubt the personal and national “tomorrow.” During the triumphal entry into Jerusalem, it was the youth that joined the ranks of Christ’s disciples and revealed their openness of heart and responsibility in the face of epochal changes and upheavals.Dear youth! Today’s Gospel event teaches us to choose with maturity and responsibility—to stand on the side of truth, goodness, and justice, to stand against manipulations, cunning propaganda, and empty promises of an easy and carefree future. The history of salvation shows all of us that the path from slavery to freedom is difficult and long, and it must be travelled from day to day, steadily and patiently. There may be

mistakes made on this path, but it would be awful for us to fall into an ill-conceived indifference and thoughtlessness by which we, often even unawares, cross over to the side of our enemy, having freely submitted once again to his tyranny.Today in Ukraine we are demonstrating our national and Christian maturity through our participation in the elections for President of Ukraine. For some of you, this is, possibly, the first election in your life. This same day may become decisive for the fate of the county for decades, and even for its very existence. Therefore, I call upon you to mature responsibility. Only a mature person is capable of foreseeing the consequences of one’s choices and take personal responsibility for them. Let us not let anyone take Ukraine for a fool, scoff at the blood and suffering of our people, who fight for true freedom at the cost of their own life.In order for you to be able to better and more conscientiously make a personal decision with responsibility, I would like to recall the criteria

which at one time His Beatitude Lubomyr of blessed memory proposed, and according to which, in his opinion, it is imperative to evaluate candidates to positions of authority in government: professionalism, integrity, patriotism. Only one who has all three traits can be worthy of our trust. Today our entire Church calls upon the Holy Spirit to send down His grace on our youth, trusting that its choice, as well as the choice of our entire people, will bring good news to Ukraine and the world, just as the choice of the youth of Jerusalem became a famous part of the Gospel of Christ Himself! The young faithful of our Church, who reside outside Ukraine and are not participating in the elections today, I wish to also call to responsibility in our communities—ecclesial and social. Take responsibility for the future of the country where you reside, do not be afraid to achieve success and perform service at the highest levels of society and thus to be a source of pride for your native people and your Church. Become active members of your

parish and the Ukrainian community. And so will you, as the divine “now” will create a better future for yourselves, your descendants, the Church and all of humanity. My dear youth! I greet you with this special youth day! Thank you for your active, mature, and responsible Christian life position. Be assured: who follows Christ and their life walks in the ways of God, such a person will always achieve a blessed goal—true freedom and happiness, which do not pass away.

The blessing of the Lord be upon you!

His Beatitude Sviatoslav: Repentance of one person can change even the whole history of the people.

Thursday, 11 April 2019 When the Judge is seated, there will be no opportunity to repent. A man will only hear the verdict, proclaimed to the whole universe, which eternity he enters. This was stated by the Father and the Head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church His Beatitude Sviatoslav during the Divine Office with the Great Canon of St. Andrew of Crete.

According to the preacher, this evening in our penitential journey during the Great Fast is a very special moment, because it is a moment of a special spiritual standing of man before God.

"Listening to the words of the Great Canon of St. Andrew of Crete, we seem to have once again

experienced the whole history of mankind: from the creation of the world to this day. We have heard about the sins of sinners, the virtues of the righteous. We heard the call to refrain the former, and to imitate the latter," said the Primate.

But, according to him, there is one difference between standing at the Last Judgment and standing this evening. "Then, when the Judge is seated, when the books are opened, all the secrets will become clear, there will be no opportunity for repentance. Then, a person will only hear the verdict proclaimed to the whole universe, which eternity he goes into," said His Beatitude Sviatoslav.

However, we have heard, added the preacher, a call that the moment

for repentance is the moment of this evening. Therefore, we bowed our knees, heads, hearts to the Lord, singing: "Have mercy on me, God."

"At the Last Judgment, everything will become clear to everyone. And what today I brought before God in repentance, is known only to me and Him. His mercy and my repentance today can change my personal history, the history of my people, perhaps even humanity," believes the Head of the Church.

St. Maximus the Confessor says that man is an interesting being, because he is changeable and unstable, but he has the opportunity to change for the better. "The repentance that a person can endure is the greatest of wonders that

the Lord can create. For repentance is like a new creation, a rebirth. But this miracle is possible only when we are with you, having opened our hearts, standing naked in our conscience before God, say to Him: "Jesus, Lord, have mercy on us!"said the Head of the UGCC.

"Today we are asking our merciful Lord for a revival for us, for our people. In repentance we ask for salvation," added the spiritual leader of the Greek Catholics.

The Annunciation occupies a significant place in our Church, His Beatitude Sviatoslav on the 10th anniversary of his

ordination to the episcopate

Monday, 08 April 2019

"On this bright Feast of the Annunciation, our Christian love and sons' feelings of gratitude and respect are revealed to the Father and Head of Our Church, His Beatitude Sviatoslav, who, 10 years ago, at the St. George’s Cathedral in Lviv, accepted the fullness of Christ's priesthood through the episcopal ordination," said Bishop Bohdan Dziurakh, Secretary of the Synod of Bishops of the UGCC, in his sermon to the faithful during the Hierarchical Divine Liturgy at the Patriarchal Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ in Kyiv.

On Sunday, April 7, 2019, the clergy and laity of the UGCC, gathered together on the

occasion of the Feast of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, had the opportunity to thank God for ten years of the bishop's service of His Beatitude Sviatoslav.

"His Beatitude Sviatoslav traveled overseas to far-flung Argentina to serve our faithful there, but he didn't stay there for a long time," added the preacher. - "He returned to his native land to receive here on his arms the cross of spiritual guidance of the multi-millionth Greek-Catholic community in Ukraine and in the world. Your Beatitude, now your spiritual children around the world unite with you in grateful prayer for the gift of your personality for our Church, for the Ukrainian people," said Bishop Bohdan Dziurakh.

According to him, the Annunciation reminds us that a great deal depends on each person, especially in the context of the difficult period of the Ukrainian State.

"We all expect the Annunciation, we need good news, good news, but at the same time, we so easily follow fake and accidental prophets. We forget that for the true Annunciation we must

always have two actors: God, who removes the shame from His people and always brings forth a gospel - joy, salvation, life, hope; and the person who must read the moments of God's visit and answer them. Moreover, man must allow the Word of God to change, first and foremost, his own heart, so that it could

act through him in the world," said Bishop Bohdan Dziurakh.

In his view, freedom and dignity are the great and valuable gifts we received from God. However, freedom can be abused, and dignity is easy to lose.

In addition, he also mentioned Blessed Josaphata Hordashevska and cited the words of John Paul II during his visit to Ukraine (when he proclaimed her the blessed: "She, by her daily and faithful dedication, was following Christ, devoting herself to children, sick, poor, illiterate, and in the often difficult and unforgettable situations of suffering, she was able to embody the Gospel in her daily life in an extraordinary way."

The Apostolic Nuncio in Ukraine Bishop Claudio Gucerotti also expressed his congratulatory speech on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the bishop's service of His Beatitude Sviatoslav."I want you to feel during this holiday the presence of the Pope, which is full of love. blessing embraces the years that have passed, and those years that remain before you," said Bishop Claudio Gucerotti, Apostolic Nuncio in Ukraine.

In addition, he thanked His Beatitude Sviatoslav for his ministry and wished "that God would fill him with the gift of wisdom," which is what we "give as a bouquet of flowers, on behalf of the whole Church."

"We understand as bishops that our achievements are your joy and our problems are your cross," said Bishop Josyph Milian, Assistant Bishop of the Kyiv Archeparchy in congratulations. - Your cooperation in various fields: spiritual, social, political and social life, gives us, bishops, an

opportunity for joy. By the grace of the Holy Spirit, the Synod of the Bishops of the UGCC chose the youngest but most worthy candidate to bear the cross of the Church."

His Beatitude Sviatoslav expressed the words of sincere gratitude for the greetings. He thanked all those who performed the rite of his ordination, especially the Bishop Ihor Voznyak, Metropolitan of Lviv.

The spiritual leader of the Greek Catholics also emphasized: "The idea of the Annunciation takes on a special place in our Church, as on this day a number of bishops celebrate their anniversaries: 11 years of the Episcopal ordination of Bishop Josaphat Hovera, Exarch of Lutsk,

5 years - of Bishop Mykhailo Bubniy, Exarch of Odesa, 3 years - of Bishop Volodymyr Hrutsa, Assistant Bishop of Lviv Archeparchy. And on this day Fr. Andriy Maksymovych, administrator of the Patriarchal Curia, celebrates his birthday."At the end of the Liturgy, the Head of the UGCC asked to pray for honest elections and a wise choice of Ukrainians.

Notre Dame fire: Holy See expresses shock and sadness

16 April 2019

The ad interim Director of the Holy See Press Office, Alessandro Gisotti, has issued a brief statement in reaction to the devastating fire that engulfed the Cathedral of Notre Dame on Monday evening (April 15, 2019).

“Shock and sadness”, as well as prayers for those doing all they can to cope with this “dramatic situation”. This is part of the message communicated by the ad interim Director of the Vatican Press Office, Alessandro Gisotti, on

behalf of the Holy See.

“The Holy See has heard with shock and sadness the news of the terrible fire that devastated the Cathedral of Notre Dame, symbol of Christianity in France and in the world. We express our closeness to French Catholics and

the people of Paris. We assure our prayers for the firemen and all those who are doing everything possible to deal with this dramatic situation".

In the face of desolation and devastation, we find hope in our Risen Lord, Head of UGCC

Wednesday, 17 April 2019

It is with great sadness and shock that we have been following the news of how fire engulfed the Cathedral Notre-Dame de Paris on the first day of Holy Week. On behalf of the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church, I would like to express our prayerful support to Archbishop Michel Aupetit, as well as our brothers and sisters in the Archdiocese of Paris, and all the people of France at this time.

With such words expressed his sympathy His Beatitude Sviatoslav, the Father and Head of the UGCC, in a letter to Cardinal George Pontier, President of the French Bishops' Conference.

"It might be that some of the most precious pieces of art of this symbol of not only Western Christendom but of all of Christianity have been lost forever for France and for the rest of the world. As Christians, however, we should not lose our hope, for in the face of desolation and

strong and steadfast in proclaiming the Word of God to the people of France. May this tragic event teach us to discern the signs of hope amid the flames, helping us to appreciate even more the core beliefs of our Christian faith in Christ Jesus who 'tramples death by death.'"
