What a wild weekend we experienced as we saw the majority of our competitions get underway for 2018. On Friday night I was a guest of the Port Melbourne Colts as they took on St Kilda City under lights on a hot and balmy night at JL Murphy Reserve. The match was really well attended, and the ground looked a picture. Unfortunately for the home team they couldn’t secure the victory and were beaten by an impressive looking St Kilda City line-up with Richard Findlay and Nathan Peterson starring up forward. And then Saturday came along…
It was certainly disappointing that the weather meant we couldn’t complete a full set of netball fixtures, but there really was no choice but to abandon the day half-way-through. This was far from the prefect scenario, particularly as some results were decided early in the third quarter of matches, but their seems little doubt that the conditions were unplayable and sadly there was only one option.
In the match of the day Heatherton were leading Dingley by two points when the games were stopped, and this saw them achieve a small amount of revenge for their defeat in last seasons Division 1 Netball Grand Final. We certainly hope that we can see much better conditions this weekend and a full complement of matches.
On the football side, most of our matches were affected by rain but the players battled on and we saw some excellent games with important early-season results. I was at Overport Park to see Frankston Dolphins play their first home match in the SFNL and they were just too strong for a determined Cerberus side. I also got to see the final quarter of the Division 1 Grand Final re-match between Dingley and Mordialloc. As expected the match was close all day, but Dingley managed to just kick clear in a tense final term to take the points.
Another highlight was Chelsea Heights winning their first match on promotion to Division 1 against Cheltenham. My
fellow tipsters in the Record all went for Cheltenham, but I was happy to have selected the home team who took the victory by nine points against the slightly inaccurate visitors.
This weekend we have a very important round of football and even though ANZAC Day is during the middle of next week many of our clubs will be celebrating and honouring this important tradition this weekend. We want to thank all the current and former service men and women who are involved with our clubs for everything they have done for us and hope they have a very enjoyable day.
Many clubs will be having functions on Saturday and I am looking forward to being at Hurlingham Park as East Brighton also use the day to celebrate the 90th birthday of Mike Williamson, who is a football media icon and a great supporter of the club and our League.
I would also like to acknowledge Cerberus who will be honouring ANZAC Day on Saturday with a home match against Moorabbin in Division 4. The club is back in divisional football this year and no doubt this is a special and important time of year for their club, officials and players.
One of the pleasing things in the 10 matches I’ve seen so far has been the positive contribution made by the umpires. There has been a consistently good quality around their performances and I’ve seen a real sense of professionalism and dedication towards doing the best job they possibly can. Numbers are strong in the umpiring ranks, however we can always do with more people who are keen to make a contribution to our two sports.
Finally, we are pleased to have appointed Ben Lockwood and Mel Aitken as coaches of our senior Interleague teams for our matches on 19th May at Boort (head for Wedderburn and turn right!). Both our coaches are passionate about putting together the best possible teams and proudly representing SFNL on the day. We will also have an Under 19 football team and information regarding player nominations has been sent to the clubs.
We would love to see the best possible teams playing for SFNL in May, but in the meantime we wish everyone all the best for this weekend and hopefully you have the chance to play in sunny and dry conditions.

year as well, so no doubt that will be addressed during the week. If they are able to limit the turnovers and convert in front of the sticks, they are a big chance to win the game.
Bentleigh, however, have had the wood on the Rosellas for the last couple of seasons, winning four of the past five encounters. They also possess arguably the better side on paper on the back of some aggressive off-season recruiting and should again prove too strong for Chelt on Saturday.
Bentleigh by 15 points.
St Pauls V Dingley (McKinnon Reserve) Like all champion sides, the Dingoes stepped up when challenged last week, and simply found a way to win the critical moments. It was a performance that they should take plenty of confidence out of.
St Pauls forged a reputation last year as being a quick and nimble young side that cuts sides up with its run and carry, however, it proved last week that it has the ability to grind out contested games in difficult conditions against a quality opponent.
The Dogs were shock winners the last time these two sides met at the Kennel, storming home with six final-term majors to announce themselves as flag contenders. However, a repeat of such a result is unlikely.
Expect the Dogs to again show plenty of heart and character, but the Dingoes may just find a way to win, as they so often do.
Dingley by six points.
St Kilda City V Chelsea Heights (Peanut Farm) An intriguing clash between two sides that produced shock results last week.
While several pundits may have foreseen a City victory, few could have predicted the manner in which they demolished the Colts on their own dungheap. In doing so, their impressive victory has changed many people’s perceptions of the Saints in season 2018.
The Heighters produced their own stunning performance in upsetting Cheltenham, largely due to their better handling of the conditions at Beazley Reserve. But how they perform at the Peanut Farm – a venue at which they have not tasted victory since 2013 – remains to be seen.
It should be a close contest, but the Saints’ home ground advantage will help them secure the four points.
St Kilda City by 19 points.
Oakleigh District V Port Melbourne Colts (Princes Highway Reserve) Two sides that will be desperate to atone for lacklustre first-up performances go head to head at Princes Highway Reserve.
Both teams had their issues in front of goal, booting a combined nine goals in Round 1, and this is an area the Oaks and the Colts would be keen to address.
The Colts were taught a lesson by a strong Saints outfit, but still have a couple of players – including the injured Cal Cathcart – to return.
Oakleigh meanwhile have taken a long-term view, blooding a number of kids in its senior side last week, and with that inconsistent performances are to be expected in the short term. But if they can compete like they did in the second half against the Panthers, they should get the chocolates.
Oakleigh District by seven points.
ROUND 1 REVIEW
Port Melbourne Colts 5.6 (36) def by St Kilda City 15.11 (101) The Saints kicked off the 2018 season in triumphant style, thrashing Port Colts by 65 points to claim the Bird Cup at JL Murphy Reserve on Friday night.
The visitors grabbed the ascendancy in the second term, booting six goals to one to open up a 36-point buffer heading into the sheds. And they didn’t let up after half time, holding the goalless in the third as they asserted their dominance and put the game beyond reach.
Aaron Purvis was the clear standout, slotting three goals in a stunning best afield display in his first game back for City, while big Nick Perry was also prominent.
Imposing new recruit Richard Findlay starred up forward for his new club, booting four goals, while Nathan Peterson also contributed four majors.
Silky midfielder Lew Mildenhall and Colts debutant Tom Nicholls were the shining lights for the home side, sharing all of their team’s five goals for the night.
Dingley 8.8 (56) def Mordialloc 6.8 (44) The SFNL’s Match of the Round didn’t disappoint, despite the wet and windy conditions, with rivals Dingley and Mordialloc playing out another exciting contest at Souter Oval.
The Dingoes proudly unveiled their Division 1 Senior premiership flag in front of a massive home crowd prior to the big game, and withstood a spirited fightback from the visitors to record a well-earned 12-point victory.
The Dingoes were the quicker of the two sides to adapt to the artic conditions, and as a result it was one-way traffic in the first term as they slammed through the first four goals of the match to scoot to a 26-point advantage.
It took until a kick after the siren for the Bloods to register their first score of the match – a long range goal to Steve Tolongs – and it seemed to spark the Bloods into action, as they responded with the only goal of the second quarter arm wrestle to reduce the margin back to 14 points.
Mordi continued to chip away at the lead and managed to get back within one solitary point mid-way through the final term. However, the Dingoes found another gear late and responded with back-to-back goals to give them some breathing space.
Nathan Evans goaled inside the final minute to get the Bloods back within a kick, but it proved too little, too late as ruckman Simon Hallsworth goaled on the final siren to kick-start the Dingoes’ party.
Chris Horton-Milne, Lucas Walmsley (three goals) and Blackchrome Player of the Day Josh Ferguson all found plenty of the footy, but it was the Dingoes defence led by the co-Captain Trav La Rocca and the impenetrable Andrew Frost that were the most important contributors.
However, Dingley’s impressive victory was soured by a first-half collarbone injury to Liam Hard, which prematurely ended his first game in the black, red and gold.
Evans, Ben Humphrey and first-gamers Harry Haley and Hamish Curtis impressed for the Bloods.
Chelsea Heights 7.5 (47) def Cheltenham 4.14 (38) Chelsea Heights has celebrated its return to Division 1 with a stunning upset victory over the highly-fancied Cheltenham at Beazley Reserve.
The Heighters led at every change in what was a scrappy and low-scoring contest, which also saw Cal Dodson’s emotional return to football following his 12-month cancer battle.
The Rosellas let themselves down badly with their ball use around the ground, with the home side proving much cleaner in the tough conditions. In particular Chelt’s conversion rate in front of goal was
poor, registering just four goals from 18 scoring shots – six more than the Heighters.
But there would be no stopping Chelsea Heights, who had winners in Jordy Peryman, Lachy Dobson (three goals) and former St Kilda City full back Harry Czarnecki.
Rosellas Kyle Parsons and Drew Kelly also impressed in their first games for their new club.
Bentleigh 5.9 (39) def by St Pauls 6.10 (46) While the dreadful conditions at Bentleigh Reserve may have killed the clash between local rivals as a spectacle, it was no less an absorbing contest as the Doggies saluted by seven points.
Like many matches over the weekend, the rain and wind that lingered throughout the day ensured that goals came at a premium. As such, there was never much in it at any at any stage as both teams fought to take control.
It was tough, desperate, contested football for much of the second half as the two sides traded goals, but St Pauls did enough in the final 10 minutes to hold out their local rivals.
New Dogs recruits Kale Pryor and Curtis Murfett stood out, as did reigning Ellis Medallist Matt Kreymborg with his three goals.
East Malvern 12.8 (80) def Oakleigh District 4.3 (27) The Panthers have enjoyed a first-up victory under new coach Nathan Robinson, belting a young Oakleigh District side by 53 points at the Zoo.
East Malvern led from go to woah, and with just 0.1 in the board to half time, the Oaks were simply never in the hunt. However, they saved face with four second half goals that added some respectability come the final siren.
Jake Mullen starred with two goals in District’s side that featured no less than six players from its 2017 Under 19 premiership team, while another former Oakleigh U19 graduate in John Walker was also named among its best.
But the Panthers simply had winners on every line, including Mark Tyrell and Luke Duffy, while Marc Lonergan finished with three goals on debut.
ROUND 2 PREVIEW
East Malvern V Mordialloc (Dunlop Reserve) While it was a positive result for the Panthers to kick off the season, a much sterner test awaits this week in the form of premiership contender Mordialloc.
The Bloods meanwhile were very impressive from quarter time onwards, and worked themselves back into the game on their ability to win the ball through the centre.
Mordi Skipper and clearance king Todd Bastion, who recently returned from overseas, made his return through the twos on the weekend, and may make his return to the seniors this week, further strengthening an already imposing midfield group.
East Malvern has its fair share of quality through the guts, including coach Nathan Robinson and star veteran Ryan Mullett, but they don’t have the depth to match it with the Bloods for four quarters.
Mordialloc by 36 points.
Cheltenham V Bentleigh (Jack Barker Oval) Over the last few years, these two clubs have established their annual ANZAC Round contest as one of the marquee events on the SFNL calendar, and there will again be plenty of interest in this one.
Both sides find themselves coming off losses to start the season, and they would be keen to open their account here on Saturday afternoon.
Chelt shot themselves in the foot last week with their poor ball use, albeit in difficult conditions, which is an issue that cost them games last

ROUND 2 REVIEW
A potential grand final preview yielded an intriguing result to headline Round 2 action in the Southern Football Netball League in the Division 2 competition, while Doveton Eagles continue to surprise.
Keysborough 9.18 (72) def Murrumbeena 7.6 (48) The premiership favourites when down in a blaze of glory in Round 2 with a strong second half from the visitors spurring them to their second straight win.
Keysborough was simply too good for Murrumbeena, booting six goals to two in the second half, including keeping the host side goalless in the final term.
Chris Bryan made it seven goals from two games to top the score sheet for Keysie, with James Anwyl and Damian Collins among the best.
A strong start in the first half from Murrumbeena saw it overcome an eight-point quarter time deficit to lead by eight at the half time break.
From there it was all the Burra however, as they booted home four goals to two in the third to take a five-point lead at the final change, before another two goals in the last secured a 24-point win, which could have been more if not for inaccurate kicking.
Dechlan Turkington and Thomas Valenta were named Murrumbeena’s best.
Caulfield 16.8 (104) def Hampton 8.16 (64) The Bears went about their business on Saturday, overcoming a Hampton side which led five points at the three quarter time break.
The visitors had all the momentum going into the fourth quarter, but the home side found their kicking boots and slotted home seven goals to one behind in the last.
Leading the charge for Caulfield was best on ground Tom Heagney with five goals, while Chris Ryall and ruckman Adam Ballard were also impressive.
The Bears enjoyed a strong start to the game, booting three goals in the first term and four in the second to lead by 15 at half time, with Hampton hanging around.
The Hammers then flicked the switch in the third, but were unable to capitalise on several opportunities, kicking 4.8 to two straight goals to only lead by five points at the final change.
Caulfield made them pay for their inaccuracy in the last, slamming home 7.4 to one behind to ultimately cruise to a 40-point win.
Mark Devereaux and Callum White were listed as the visitor’s best.
Mount Waverley 8.4 (58) def Clayton 5.10 (40) Mount Waverley key forward Caleb Schulz continued to show he’s one to keep an eye on, booting five goals in his side’s 18-point win against Clayton.
In a match where goals were sometimes hard to come by, Schulz made the most of his chances as the Lions pulled away in the final term.
Schulz was named among his side’s best with Jamil Tye named best on ground alongside Ben McLeod and Ethan Tobias.
Clayton opened the game in stirring fashion to boot three goals in the opening term, but were held scoreless in the second as Mount Waverley opened up an eight-point lead.
Both sides could only manage one goal in the third term with the lead decreasing to five before the Lions pulled away in the last, with three goals to one to eventually win by 18 points.
Glenn Tuckwell and Lachlan Caine were best on for Clayton.
Doveton Eagles 13.14 (92) def East Brighton 9.11 (65) A scintillating first half was the key behind Doveton Eagles’ 27-point win against East Brighton at home, though the second half was a cause for concern.
The Eagles booted eight goals to two in the opening half to lead by 40 points at the main break, but conceding seven goals to five in the second half.
Peter Dye and Enayte Samadi combined for six goals in the win, while Nicholas Beer and Nick Battle were named best on ground.
Doveton was flying in the first quarter, kicking five goals to one behind, before adding three goals to two in the second to lead by 40.
To East Brighton’s credit, it refused to lay down in the second half and booted four goals to one in the third to get to within 20 points and a sniff at an upset.
Doveton was able to switch back on in the fourth and held back the Vampires with four goals to three and come away with the win.
Mark Jamieson (three goals) was best on for the visitors alongside Ryan Cosgrave.
Highett 12.11 (83) def Skye 4.7 (31) Highett has gone about shaking the Jekyll and Hyde tag very nicely in 2018, winning its second straight game with a commanding 52-point win against Skye.
The Dogs set up the win with an eight-goal first half and while the scoring dried up in the second, they only conceded two majors.
Tom Brown showed he can still be considered one of the top players in Division 2, booting four goals in a best on ground performance, while Nathan Scott was also impressive.
In a competitive first half, Highett broke away early to lead by two goals at the first change, before holding Skye goalless in the second, increasing its lead to 41 points.
The Dogs chipped away throughout the second half, kicking two goals to one in both the third and fourth quarters to eventually win by 52.
Daniel Turner and Zach Harland were among the best for Skye.
ROUND 3 PREVIEW
Four matches will be played on Saturday in Division 2 for ANZAC Day round with Caulfield and Murrumbeena the highlight of the weekend, with Clayton and Keysborough to do battle on Sunday as the Clays continue their tradition of a stand-alone Sunday game.
Caulfield v Murrumbeena (Koornang Park)
Match of the Round These two sides have had a lot of fantastic matches against one another across the last couple of years, but this might be the most intriguing of them all.
Caulfield is coming off a strong start to the season, winning two straight, and boasts a deep line-up with a number of forward options.
Murrumbeena hasn’t been able to live up to the hype so far, with one win and one loss, and may go into this match as underdogs.
Caulfield by three points.
Skye v Doveton Eagles (Carrum Downs Recreation Reserve) The Bombers will be looking for win number one of the season, but its going to be a tough ask coming up against Doveton Eagles, who sit atop the ladder.
The Eagles have been the surprise packets so far in 2018 and have immediately burst into finals contenders with some excellent performances.
While Skye always performs strongly at home, it will be difficult for it to cause an upset in this one. Difficult, but not impossible.
Doveton by 22 points.
Hampton v Highett (Peterson Street Reserve) These two sides once combined to form an Under 19s team, so there is a bit of rivalry between Hampton and Highett, especially early in the season.
Hampton has had its moments so far this season against some good sides in Murrumbeena and Caulfield, but are yet to win a game.
Highett has been one of the in-form teams through two rounds and will again go in favourite with too much firepower up forward.
Highett by 17 points.
East Brighton v Mount Waverley (Hurlingham Park) It doesn’t seem that long ago where these two sides were among the pack hunting for the final spot in the top five last year, only for neither to get it.
The Lions enjoyed a solid win against Clayton last week to get on the board, with Caleb Schulz impressing for the second straight week.
East Brighton can be commended for getting back into the contest against Doveton, but can’t afford to start that slowly again.
East Brighton by five points.
Clayton v Keysborough (Meade Reserve) These two clubs have experienced opposite starts to their respective seasons, with the visitors coming into the match as heavy favourites.
Clayton have endured two straight losses to start the year and unless there is dramatic change on the field, it’s going to be three.
Keysborough have been the benchmark so far and will only be more confident after defeating Murrumbeena last week.
Keysborough by 34 points.

ROUND 1 REVIEW
Black Rock 3.5 (23) def by Ashwood 11.10 (76) Melbourne turned on one of its famously variable days, but the weather proved more dramatic than the contest at MacDonald Reserve.
A dominant Ashwood dispatched Black Rock by 53 points.
That score slightly flattered the Jets who were comprehensively outplayed and may have suffered a heavier loss if not for Daniel Kick’s excellent display in defence.
The Jets’ only three goals for the day came in the third term with a powerful wind assisting them.
Ashwood’s recent recruiting efforts are already reaping dividends.
Paddy Carroll’s strong marking was an impressive feature of the game and he was named the winner’s best player.
Alex Davies, an arrival from the EFL, regularly drove the Magpies into attack.
Chris Grove, who transferred from Hampton, slotted in immediately with three goals.
David Masson, another ex-Hammer, was excellent in the backline.
But there were plenty of impressive performers amongst the more established Magpies.
George Lithotomos caught the eye, particularly with his dashing play in the first term.
He helped his side assume control early, despite the Magpies starting the match against a strong wind.
After being hampered by knee issues last season, Mitch Saunders showed he is back in business with a classy display.
His teammate James Morrey was the most productive goal scorer of the match, with four majors to his name.
Ashwood ruckman Gary McDonagh worked tirelessly throughout the game.
As for the vanquished Jets, highlights were few, however, recruit Jack Reggardo provided a rare moment of excitement for the home fans with a classy set shot goal from near the boundary line.
The only sour note for Ashwood was an injury to Dale Carroll.
Hampton Park 17.23 (125) def Hallam 1.2 (8) It was a predictably tough introduction to coaching for Hallam’s Ash Allen.
His inexperienced side was no match for Hampton Park, succumbing by 117 points at Robert Booth Reserve.
Nathan Carver booted eight of the Redbacks’ goals, with midfielder Michael Henry named the side’s best player.
In contrast, Hallam managed a solitary major for the day, that coming from the boot of new arrival Billy Athanasopoulos.
Heatherton 3.6 (24) def by Endeavour Hills 18.10 (118) Endeavour Hills was in charge from the outset against an outclassed Heatherton, registering a 94-point victory.
Falcon Daniel Bartley was best afield, with a couple of off-season additions Daniel Cann and Andrew Vella also prominent for the triumphant Endeavour Hills’ team.
Vella and Jarrod Marolla each contributed four goals to the win.
David White managed a couple of majors for the beaten Tonners, with high-profile recruit Khaled Kandakji scoring their only other goal.
Springvale Districts 14.11 (95) def South Yarra 6.4 (40) After the disappointment of a loss on Good Friday, Springvale Districts bounced back emphatically.
The Demons comfortably accounted for South Yarra, recording a 55-point win.
Daniel Saldanha was best on ground, demonstrating why Springvale Districts acquired him from Oakleigh District.
Stefan Feehan was one of eight goal kickers for the victorious Demons, topping the list with three majors.
ROUND 2 PREVIEW
Endeavour Hills vs Springvale Districts (Barry Simon Reserve) Endeavour Hills commenced its season with a substantial away win over Heatherton.
The Falcons face a more searching examination when they host Springvale Districts.
These sides shape as genuine contenders for the flag and each will be keen to gain an early psychological advantage over the other.
It is difficult to assess how the two sides compare in terms of ability.
How will last year’s Division 3 runner-up perform against an improved version of what was a competitive Division 2 squad?
It will be fascinating to see what transpires, but the Falcons may just sneak home on their turf.
Ashwood vs Hampton Park (Essex Heights Reserve) Ashwood’s demolition of Black Rock was full of promise for the Magpies’ season prospects, with fierce tackling and impressive ball movement despite trying conditions.
This week the challenge rises several notches against unbeaten Hampton Park.
Expect a ripper contest with the Redbacks starting as favourites.
Before the season commenced, Ashwood coach Mick Rossborough suggested it would be a tough task to get the better of Hampton Park.
Nonetheless, don’t underestimate his side and the substantial improvements he has made through astute recruiting since last season’s disappointing finals performance.
South Yarra vs Black Rock (Fritsch Holzer Park) Neither South Yarra nor Black Rock commenced the season as finals fancies and their odds have already lengthened.
Both were soundly beaten in Round 1 and this week’s match should be fiercely contested, with each side needing to make a positive statement.
Back on the tight confines of Fritsch Holzer Park, expect South Yarra to be tough to beat.
Hallam vs Heatherton (Hallam Reserve) Heatherton strung together 17 losses in 2017 and added another against Endeavour Hills to start the Tonners’ 2018 campaign.
The side will never get a better chance to break that dismal sequence than it has against wooden-spoon favourite Hallam.
At least the Hawks find themselves back in the reassuring surrounds of Hallam Reserve, but that won’t be enough to prevent Heatherton breaking its run of losses.

SFNL MEDIA DESK
This weekend Paul Fermanis plays his 150th game for the Oakleigh District Football Club.
Fermanis grew up within a stone’s throw of Princes Highway Reserve and played his junior cricket there from the Under 12’s.
Paul was always an Oakleigh boy, playing his junior football at the Oakleigh Dragons before going on to play in the Oakleigh Chargers’ TAC Cup premiership in 2006. Most good judges agreeing he was best on that day!
A most dynamic player, impossible to stop at times, he is a heart and soul member of the Oakleigh District Football Club and one of the SFNL’s greats.
All supporters of the club have pride in Paul’s development from a young gun in his early days, to a great club man and now a great family man.
Congratulations Paul on a fantastic achievement!
Last week was quite an historic day for the Oakleigh District Football Club as for the first time in the clubs’ storied history, we saw a third generation from the same family play senior football in the famous black and white strip.
When young 17-year-old Nathan Peddle took to the field for his senior debut last week, watching on proudly were dad Brenton and granddad Graeme.
Graeme (Bluey) Peddle played more than 150 games for the club, as did his son Brenton. Both are former Presidents of the club as well, so the Peddle name is already firmly etched in the club’s history.
Now the Districts hope to continue a great family dynasty through Nathan, who prior to his senior debut last Saturday, was an integral member of the clubs’ Under 19 2017 premiership side alongside brother Regan. While Regan is likely to spend much of the season in the 19s, there is every chance we may see him join Nathan in the senior team at some stage in 2018 to continue the Peddle legacy.
Congratulations to the Peddle family on their remarkable achievements and we look forward to seeing Nathan and Regan write the next chapter in the family’s history at the Districts.
FERMANIS SET FOR 150 MILESTONE

ROUND 2 REVIEW
Sandown 7.10 (52) def by Lyndale 12.5 (77) Lyndale is on the board for season 2018, registering their first win against a plucky Sandown by 25 points at Edinburgh Reserve. In blustery conditions the Pumas controlled the first half, heading into the main break with eight of the first nine goals. Josh Kyle was in everything for the visitors and a major factor in Lyndale’s dominance.
However, after the break Sandown were able to wrestle back some momentum and more importantly started to hit the scoreboard. In an encouraging last quarter the home side was able to restrict the Pumas to just one goal, whilst kicking three of their own to comfortably win the quarter. Nevertheless the first half deficit proved too much for the Cobras and Lyndale was able to stand firm and record their first victory to kick start their season.
Trevor Kumetaitis, Trent Day and Shane Thomas were lively up forward for the Pumas, combining to boot 10 goals between them. For Sandown, Brendan Robinson continued his strong start to the season, whilst Matthew Bennie provided a target up forward.
Frankston Dolphins 12. 7 (79) def Cerberus 4.6 (30) Frankston have continued their impressive start to the season, registering a comfortable 49-point win over Cerberus at Overport Park. In a complete contrast to last weekend’s weather, both sides were made to battle the wind and rain in chilly conditions. The Dolphins seemed to adapt to the conditions much better and were able to handle the greasy ball with better efficiency.
The first three quarters resulted in a tight tussle with the Dolphins able to keep the Dogs at bay every time they threatened to challenge. Heading into the final term, the game opened up somewhat and the Dolphins were able to run away with the contest, slotting six goals to two to finish the game off.
Frankston’s forward line showed once again they have many avenues to goal, with eight individual goal kickers highlighting the team effort. Andrew Lee and Regan Hall were solid all day for the Dolphins, along with Brendan Bryant who continued his good form.
The Dogs once again ran out of puff this week but Christopher Madson and Aiden Lochert were prominent for the visitors.
Carrum Patterson Lakes 6.7 (43) def Lyndhurst 3.5 (23) Carrum Patterson Lakes have put in another solid display of football to account for Lyndhurst by 20 points in real slog at Roy Dore Reserve. The Lions made sure their first home appearance for the season ended with a victory, controlling the game for the majority of the day. In a low scoring affair CPL were able to open up and increase a handy buffer across the day, taking a 20 point advantage at the last change.
The last quarter saw a bit of a stalemate, as neither team was able to register a goal in difficult conditions. The win confirms that the Lions will be one of the teams to watch out for this season and they should be full of confidence after a good start to the year. Liam Swift and Jonathon Hawes were outstanding for the home side, while Anthony Caruso’s two goals were important in a low scoring tussle.
For the Lightning, the result was not ideal but they will take plenty of lessons from the clash before hitting the training track this
week. Charlie Gardiner backed up last weekend with another good performance and was the best for the visitors.
Moorabbin 12.11 (83) def Dandenong 9.12 (66) Moorabbin has notched their second win of the season against Dandenong at Widdop Crescent Reserve after a tale of two halves. The Kangaroos piled on the pain in the opening half, dominating the contest to take a healthy 52-point lead at the main break. The Roos looked in complete control and heading towards a handy percentage booster.
However the second half was the polar opposite for both sides, as the Redlegs started to take control of the game and hit the scoreboard. Dandenong completely jumped the Kangaroos to boot five goals to one, entering the last change with a boost in confidence and belief. Moorabbin had a chance to regroup and respond, but the Redlegs continued on with their momentum and were able to create several scoring opportunities.
But those chances were wasted in an inaccurate quarter, as Dandenong kicked 2.6 to ultimately fall short by 17 points. The Kangaroos will gladly take the victory but will hardly be satisfied with what they dished up in the second half. Dylan Bone once again hit the scoreboard with three goals, solidifying his position as leading goal kicker in the competition with nine majors thus far.
For the Redlegs there were plenty of encouraging signs in the second half and they will be looking to produce that type of football over a more consistent period next weekend. Bo Freeman and Jayke Hopkins were two of the best performers on the day for Dandenong.
ROUND 3 PREVIEW
Cerberus V Moorabbin Kangaroos (McAuliffe Oval) Although the Dogs are yet to get on the board for season 2018, they will fancy their chances at home against a Kangaroos side who have won both of their encounters so far. Cerberus have shown good signs in patches this season, however they are yet to stitch together a complete four quarter performance. This will no doubt be high on the agenda for Coach Adrian James as he looks to get his team off and running into the season. The Dogs will also need to find more avenues to goal with Aiden Lochert scoring three out of the team’s four goals against Frankston at the weekend.
For the Kangaroos there is plenty of work to do after they endured a scare from a resilient Dandenong outfit last weekend. The Roos went to sleep after half time and conceded seven goals to two, as they clung onto a 17-point win. The Roos cannot afford any lapses in concentration against the Dogs this weekend and will look to be fully switched on right throughout the match.
On form Moorabbin should be the favourites for this game, but don’t discount the Dogs at home who are yet to quite click. Kangaroos in a close one.
Moorabbin by five points.
Carrum Patterson Lakes V Sandown (Roy Dore Reserve) The Lions have had a solid start to the season and will be looking to add to their win tally when they square off against Sandown on their home turf at the weekend. CPL will be searching for another good performance to solidify their claims as one of the top teams this season after two wins thus far.

Through
Standing in CPL’s way this weekend is Sandown, who put in a spirited effort against Lyndale to come up short by 25 points. The Cobras had a crack against the Pumas and if not for an inaccurate first half could have found themselves much closer. Aaron Lucas and Brendan Robinson have been in decent form for the away side and will be crucial if the Cobras are to mix it with the Lions.
CPL should head into this quite confident but should be wary of any complacency. Jonathon Hawes and Daniel Courts have started the season brightly for the home side and should be influential on this contest. The Cobras will put up a fight but the Lions should be too strong at home.
Carrum Patterson Lakes by 30 points.
Lyndhurst V Frankston Dolphins (Marriot Waters Reserve) Lyndhurst are coming off a disappointing loss against Carrum Patterson Lakes and will be searching to rebound back onto the winners list at home this weekend. The Lightning were never quite able to get the game on their terms against the Lions and struggled to hit the scoreboard. They will be keen to find a better balance up forward and return to the form which saw them boot 17 majors in round one.
Confronting them is Frankston, who have taken to the competition like a duck to water with two impressive performances. In contrast to the Lightning, the Dolphins have had no troubles finding a path to goal with a diverse and even contribution of goal kickers in the first two rounds. Luke Kirkland has been especially lively up forward and will be sure to provide plenty of headaches for defenders.
The Lightning on their home deck will be pumped up for this and this should result in a good even contest for the majority of the day. Even so Frankston are in good form and will be up for the challenge.
Frankston Dolphins by 12 points.
Dandenong V Lyndale (Springvale Reserve) Whilst Dandenong came away with a loss last weekend, their spirited fightback in the second half will provide them with plenty of confidence as they return to home territory to face Lyndale. The Redlegs comprehensively outscored Moorabbin in the final two quarters last week and will be looking to translate that same intensity into a complete four quarter performance. David Barrie will be central to Dandenong’s forward structure and will be looking build off his four-goal performance last weekend.
In the opposition camp, Lyndale notched their first win for season 2018 after they held off a determined Sandown last weekend. In windy conditions the Pumas were able to score crucial goals against the breeze to set up the win. Jayden Denmead has been in great form for the visitors and Shane Thomas has also provided a good target up forward.
Lyndale will be looking to secure back to back wins but Dandenong will know they are a big chance in this match. Could go either way!
Lyndale by three points.

ROUND 1 REVIEW
Dingley 12.15-87 def East Brighton 0.0-0 Dingley gave East Brighton a tough welcome to the competition, trampling over the visitors by 87 points in a promising home performance.
Dingley’s score line was a credit considering Saturday’s horrendous conditions, with towering forward Jack Farrington (Under 17s 2017) showing the new comers no mercy and booting five goals in a simultaneous best on ground performance and Under 19s debut.
Despite great efforts from East Brighton’s Liam Reidy and Myles Chamaa, the team struggled from the get-go with Dingley’s dominance overall proving too strong for their opponents.
Farrington and Brody Stainer were Dingley’s best, with four of their six best players also junior pickups from 2017.
St Kilda City 7.16-58 def Keysborough 1.2-8 2017 minor premiers St Kilda City took their first step towards Grand Final redemption as they ran over a deflated Keysborough by 50 points.
Inaccuracies early on left City with only a 0.5- 0.0 lead going into the second term, but the visitors were able to gradually build on the damage, including two goals apiece from Oliver Woods and Matthew McNaughton.
City’s trademark defensive pressure made it impossible for Keysborough to make a move in this match, keeping them to just two points until Alex Tisi managed to boot their first and only goal of the game in the final term.
Zachary O’Farrell was a stand out in what was a rough start to 2017 for the competition’s debutants, and James Van-Minnen was impressive for the victors.
Parkmore / Springvale Districts 5.15-45 def Oakleigh District 5.3-33 Parkmore / Springvale knocked off last year’s champions Oakleigh District in a stunning first round feat, stealing the four points in a highly competitive clash.
2017 Leader Shooting Star recipient Robert Lega-Frost was up to his usual tricks with a solid start to his year, including a best on ground display and three goals to his name as Parkmore / Springvale shocked the previous premiers.
Oakleigh led in the first term, restricting the home side to just two points, but a turnaround for Parkmore / Springvale was sure to follow when they answered back with a score of 2.4 to 1.0 in the second term.
A solid hit out between both sides continued well into the third term, with Oakleigh’s Zion Nelthropp starring as his side managed to hold on to an eight-point advantage approaching the final term.
However, Parkmore / Springvale began to capitalise when Oakleigh were unable to retain their form for the game’s remainder, keeping their opponents to no score and piling on a score of 2.8 – with inaccuracies preventing what could have been a significantly larger feat.
Oakleigh’s absence of last year’s premiership players was
notable, with last year’s equal fifth Best and Fairest Liam McCabe taking the step up to seniors along with Simon Bonacci and Christopher Casset.
Lega-Frost and Dylan Hettiarachchi starred for the unsuspecting Parkmore / Spingvale, and Yianni Billias was a force to be reckoned with at Oakleigh’s scoring end with a four-goal haul.
Bentleigh 8.8-56 def Hampton 3.5-23 Bentleigh starred at home in convincing style over Hampton, taking the cake by 33 points in a positive start to their 2018 season.
Kicking with the aid of the breeze, the Demons booted 4.5 to 0.0 in the opening term to race to an early lead, before Hampton hit back with the only two goals of the second to get within 14 points at the long change.
The home side stretched their lead in the third with another four unanswered goals, and although the Hammers held them goalless in the final term, it was enough to ensure they took the four points.
Hugo Ferdinand was Bentleigh’s best with two goals and a best on ground effort, alongside Jackson Byrnes and Patrick Franklin. Jack Reed was a highlight for Hampton.
Endeavour Hills 8.10-58 def Cheltenham / St Pauls 6.10-46 Endeavour Hills secured their first four points of 2018 in a narrow victory over the newly formed Cheltenham / St Pauls.
The home side bounced to a promising start, kicking 5.2 to Cheltenham / St Pauls’ 2.1-13 and leading by 19 points approaching the first break.
However, Ashley Becker and Anthony Malamas (Under 19’s Best and Fairest recipient) led a charge for the visitors in the second term, with Cheltenham / St Pauls biting back in a 20-point turnaround, leaving Endeavour Hills scoreless.
With one point dividing the sides at the main break, the game was anyone’s for the taking, and Endeavour Hills took the chance with two hands.
Harrison Malone was a clear standout for Endeavour Hills, as they proceeded to stack on 3.5 to Cheltenham / St Pauls’ 0.5 in the third term - proving to be irreversible damage despite an honourable last quarter comeback by Cheltenham / St Pauls (1.4 to 0.3).
ROUND 2 PREVIEW
Bentleigh and Cheltenham / St Pauls will clash coming off solid starts to their season when they meet at the Jack Barker Oval, and both St Kilda City and Endeavour Hills will also be looking to sing their song for the second time at the Peanut Farm.
Hampton will have a challenge on their hands at home as they face Dingley, and both Oakleigh and Keysborough will be looking to secure their first win of the season when they cross paths at the Princes Highway Reserve.
East Brighton will be looking to retaliate from a tough first round loss as Parkmore / Springvale come to visit at the Hurlingham Reserve.

What if they held a season opener and nobody came?
Whilst it wasn’t quite as dramatically definite as that, nobody expected the climatic conditions that our fair city brought to bear. Play on the first day of the 2018 season was restricted by the whistling wind and the thumping rain to just over half a game in the opening timeslot, upon which the court organisers mercifully left players and watchers alike to retire to their warm homes and hot baths. Therefore, this scribe has been asked to craft this weeks’ column whilst saying rather little. Many will say that they can’t tell the difference...
The top division did kick off, with the main attraction being the first of the season’s clashes of the titans, as Dingley took on Heatherton. And such was the difficulty of the conditions that the first quarter was completely scoreless. Both sides did well to control the ball under the pressure applied by the defences but found the task of finishing inside the circle nigh-on impossible. The scorers were roused from their slumber in the second term as the cut and thrust continued, but the scoreline was restricted to 2-2 at half time. Here, however, is where the fun began. Nat Billings and Bella Riddell converted twice for the Tunners in the opening two minutes of the second half... and that was it. Play was abandoned and given that the game was more than half completed, the score stands. Heatherton therefore completed their eighth straight victory over their old rivals and took their first four competition points of the season.
It is almost impossible to read anything into this result, as it is with last years’ other finalists, Caulfield and Keysborough. Court one is the most exposed court in the complex, and the wind was such that it was not unusual for those shooting, especially at the northern end, to find the ball missing the target and sailing back over their shoulders. Shooting to the marginally less difficult end, Keysborough took a 4-1 lead to the opening break, and Tara Bickham in particular did a great job in leading the Burras to six breaches of the near-impregnable northern goal in the second term. Caulfield meanwhile began to make merry, with the Domica Wescombe-led mid-court creating enough opportunities for the Bears to go in level at 10-10. As with the previous match though, Sophie O’Shea proved to be the circuit breaker with the only goal in the shortened second half, giving Keysborough disappointment and Caulfield the points in an 11-10 victory.
Court three saw the two newcomers to the division come together, as Hampton Park made their SFNL debut against Mordialloc. Both sides showed enough to suggest that they will not be out of place at the top table this season. Megan
Egbers and Elly Anthony were on the mark early for the Park, finishing off some fine patterns of play from those further afield. However, as the game progressed Sophie Durnan began to run the show for Mordialloc, and in Emily Morris and Lucy McKeown they had shooters that were not about to spurn the chances that were offered. A 5-5 quarter time scoreline was converted into a Mordialloc 14-7 half time lead, and one further goal in the third term meant that the final score was Mordialloc 15, Hampton Park 7.
The final match of the round saw two largely reconstructed teams face off in St Pauls and St Kilda City. St Pauls took control of this game from early on and established a 9-4 quarter time lead. The mid-court led by Adele Gilmore and Tayla Walsh worked hard for St Pauls to feed their shooters, as the City newcomers battled the elements to find their combinations. The City girls showed plenty in the second quarter to give them hope that they would be a match for the more fancied sides in this league, and St Pauls were only to add one to their margin to lead 18-12 at the main break. The one goal in the abridged third term meant that St Pauls completed a 19-12 first round win.
The curtailment of the days’ play meant that of the other competitions, only Divisions 3, 8 and 9 began and as with Division 1, games were restricted to just over a half. In division three, Lyndale took control early against Mordialloc and stood strong for a 9-7 victory, St Kilda City dominated after an even start to beat Black Rock 8-2, Dingley led all the way before emerging victorious by 14-5, and Bentleigh and Hampton Park scored freely before Bentleigh ran out winners by 21-13.
Division 8 saw Springvale Districts trail by only two at quarter time, but it was all Lyndale after that as they won by 17-5. Elsewhere Dingley led early against Oakleigh District and were too strong to be defeated, triumphing by 14-4. Hallam were a little too slick for Keysborough, winning by 8-3, while Lyndhurst and Highett shared the four first quarter goals before Lyndhurst took control, winning by 11-2.
In Division 9 Dingley defeated Dandenong by way of forfeit, Black Rock were always in control in beating Springvale Districts by 14-6, Lyndhurst kept Clayton to one solitary goal while scoring 11 themselves, and South Yarra recovered from a 7-5 first term deficit in drawing 10-10 with Heatherton.
So the 2018 netball season is underway, at least for some of us! Well done to all that braved the elements last Saturday – here’s hoping that we won’t need snorkels next week!!!

DIVISION 1: CLUB NOTES
DINGLEYLast Saturday’s dreadful weather threatened to keep crowd numbers down, but that was not the case, and all who attended the 2017 Grand Final rematch were entertained by a classical tough battle. Only fourteen goals were possible due to the constant rain and huge across ground wind. The seniors win was soured somewhat by a shoulder injury to Liam Hard on debut and we wish him well in his recovery. All five senior debutantes performed well, softening the loss of some vital 2017 premiership players. It was just the start we were hoping for and with several experienced players on the mend and set to resume in coming weeks, our overall depth should improve.
The Reserves, Under 19s and Thirds all had good wins and although many of the Netball games were abandoned due to the conditions, good wins were notched up in various grades. It was great to see, Josh ‘Snake’ Ellis at the game and back on his feet after his shocking season ending broken leg. 2017 retiree Ryan ‘Dogga’ Stewart looked ‘toey’ and fit enough to pull ‘em on again.
This week we travel to McKinnon oval to take on St Pauls who were also winners last week. I’m sure the boys will be reminded that the ‘Doggies won both encounters last year. It’s another massive challenge against an always quality outfit. This should be another ripper, Dogs versus Dingoes, and worthy of match of the round status.
A huge thanks goes out to the fantastic support of all our generous major sponsors, who include Bendigo Bank Dingley, Carlisle Homes,
Bird and Beast, Monier, Tranzworks, the Dingley Hotel and a special welcome to O’Brien Real Estate. Everyone who helps out in any way is a vital cog in the wheel. Thank you all.
Football Club Social memberships are on sale for just $50. That represents good value with many additions for products and events throughout the year. See Nigel Thompson for memberships and to get on board for 2018.
We are also looking for supporters to sponsor their favourite player for the year at $150.
Sales of our history book ‘Dingo Tales’ continue through the club and on line. Call Brian Edwards on 0412545443 or David Meeve on 0448767808. We’ll get you a copy if you can’t get to the club. Every dollar after production costs go to the club.
Go Dingoes!
CHELSEA HEIGHTSLast Saturday in front of sponsors and past players Chelsea Heights unfurled our Division 2 Premiership flag and welcomed Callum Dodson back for his first game in 12 months after his battle with cancer.
The day started off wet and windy, during the reserves game we had to put on the lights due to the conditions. In what was a scrappy and low scoring contest, Chelsea Heights celebrated our return to Division one with a
nine point win over Cheltenham.
2018 season we welcome a new era at the club with our First Women’s Football side.
We welcome Michelle Vernall as our inaugural coach and all the new players to Chelsea Heights.
An important and integral part of any club are the sponsors and we would like to welcome all our sponsors, those returning and those who are new to our club and we wish to thank-you for your ongoing support.

ST PAULSNetball:
Div 1: St Pauls 19 defeated St Kilda City 12
In terrible conditions it was a goal for goal start, we had great pressure turning the ball over and we were able to convert. The girls worked the ball well through the centre with our wings feeding our goal scorers who had to work hard and barely missed an opportunity. It was a great team effort!
Div 5: Match abandoned.
Football:
U19: Endeavour Hills 8.10.58 d Chelt/St Pauls 6.10.46
The combination played their first match together with only 17 boys available, so to lose by 12 points was encouraging. A point up at half time and even at 3/4 time, we faded in the final period. Ash Becker, Tom Gamble, Dylan Lihari and Nick Roberts performed well.
Reserves: Sponsored by Bendigo Bank Ormond-McKinnon Branch
St Pauls 5.12.42 d Bentleigh 3.4.22
This game copped the worst of the day’s atrocious weather, with hail and heavy rain, along with strong cross winds. Scores were close at half time though we had eight more scoring shots. Four goals to one in the second half resulted in a good win. Kieran Knox dominated, with good support from Walsh, Davenport, Jack Kreymborg, Hay and Dolan.
Seniors: Sponsored by One Paper Industries Ltd.
St Pauls 6.10.46 d Bentleigh 5.9.39
We scored two behinds in the first three minutes, then Bentleigh held us scoreless whilst adding 1.3.9 for the term. Our new players found the Demon’s big men a challenge and their handball and teamwork was better. We lifted in the second term, though clean possession and field kicking was difficult in the cross wind - two points down at the break.
Each side managed two goals in the third quarter. Meredeth took mark of the day, but his shot fell short. Later on he marked closer in, but passed to Massey who goaled. Muller and Prior balanced the scoreboard for the Dogs. Matt Kreymborg and Wil Clarke outstanding in this term but only a point separated the sides at lemon time. Each side managed points to open the last term, then Wil and TMac clashed heads in a marking contest - TMac out for the day. Kremma was freed, but too far out, but Prior goaled from the spill. Demons replied with a clearance to Troubeck who marked and goaled. Ash Munday was freed in the centre - his strong kick was marked by Kremma who goaled. The final eight minutes was desparate, contested footy - neither side scoring again. Great win.
Among our best - Kremma,Wil, Kale Prior, Curtis Murfett, McCarthy and Halliday.
Next week - President’s Lunch 12 to 2pm, then a battle with Dingley.
ST KILDA CITYJust want to thank all the St.Kilda City players, volunteers, supporters, sponsors and their families and friends for their support at the game last night. The way you all conducted yourselves is to be commended. Also to the netball girls who turned out in numbers good luck today. The players truly appreciated the noise and I’m sure everyone agreed the players and the coaches did their job on the field in return and put on a sterling performance, probably our biggest turnout for 10 years. Let’s back it up this coming Saturday 21st April at home
vs Chelsea Heights we will celebrate a 20 year reunion of our 1998 premiership team, everyone is invited.
Note the clubrooms and surrounding area is under construction and we are operating out of temporary facilities, so your patience and understanding is important. We’ve still got the BBQ going with refreshments. The club will move it’s after match festivities from 5pm onwards to the Village Belle hotel. Our fantastic sponsor will be open as the senior game concludes, drinks and meals will be available for everyone upon arrival at the front public bar.
A few match day notes:
Seniors - Convincing winners.
Reserves - Battled hard but didn’t get the chocolates.
U19’s - Started with a win again in horrible conditions.
Netball - Mixed bag, 1 out of 3 teams won before the day got called due to bad weather
Thanks to all sponsors - Bendigo Bank, Village Belle, Stefans Shack, Why not rent a Car, Di Stasios Cafe, Dick Whittington Hotel, Rombotis Real Estate, Central Home Loans.
MORDIALLOCRound One Oh winter sport, where have you been? It’s good to have you back. And winter bared it’s teeth in a big way, albeit two months early, making football difficult and netball literally impossible.
The day’s netball was brought to an early conclusion to avert the danger to players and officials alike just on 1pm, meaning that only our division one and three teams got on court, and then only for just over a half. The division one girls were most impressive in defeating the division’s other unknown quantities, Hampton Park, by 15-7. New coach Sophie Durnan and her band of well-credentialled recruits started the season in fine fettle, and it did not take long for them to gel with the remaining members of Mordialloc teams gone by, as an even first quarter was turned into a convincing lead when play was called to a halt. The division three ladies were not so fortunate, conceding the points to Lyndale by 9-7, but they will be encouraged by their recovery from a slow start. There is plenty of experience and know-how in this team. They
will be one to watch as the season unfolds.
It has been some time since we’ve been able to beat Dingley at reserves level, not that we’re Robinson Crusoe in that regard. Last year’s preliminary final, whilst disappointing, led us to think we were getting closer, and our team on paper led us to believe that this might be the day. Alas, close, but no cigar. Two goals to nil in the first quarter gave us a margin that we were able to hold until the last change, but in the final term the rain ceased, the wind blew, and Dingley were just too damn good. 50 to 29 doesn’t give a true indication of the fight that we put up. We had all single goalkickers, with Todd Bastion, Shane Lawton and Lachlann Zealley our best on the day.
Mordialloc v Dingley battles are epic in nature, be they football, netball, cheese rolling or anything else. This was a replay of last year’s grand final and is tipped by many to be a preview of this year’s, and the fare on offer here didn’t disappoint. Dingley kicked the first four goals by using the wind well early on, but when Steve Tolongs belted one home from distance on the quarter time siren, our spirits rose significantly. Unfortunately Dingley again
proved to be a fine into-the-wind team and we went to oranges two goals down. Though we reduced the margin to five points at the last change, and got to within one early in the last term, that’s as close as we came, and Dingley scored the last two majors of the day to win by 56-44. As with the seconds, we did not have a multiple goalkicker. Ben Humphrey, Nathan Evans and Aaron Kneebone were adjudged our best.
Next Sunday sees the opening of the women’s football season, and our girls will play East Brighton at 11.30 as a curtain-raiser to the Sandringham v Port Melbourne VFL match at Trevor Barker Oval, Sandringham. Please come watch this if you can and give our girls some of our amazing Bloodhounds support. The girls tuned up with a final practice match against Waverley where, despite the foul conditions and a couple of injuries, our ability to win possession and our forward pressure gave us much to be enthused about. There are many new faces in the side this year, and they will be well worth watching as the season develops.
So that’s it for round one folks. Let’s try & catch a game or two next weekend. Go Mordi!!!
CHELTENHAMWhat a day of weather we experienced last Saturday! During the reserves game, the tempest hit at the 19 minute mark of the second quarter. With visibility down to a few feet, winds that would blow a dog off its chain and strong hail, the umpires said let’s get out of this! To their credit, it was a common sense decision and the only thing that could be done.
This Saturday is our traditional ANZAC Tribute game and it is an opportunity for us all to show the respect to all those who have served our great nation in the forces.
ROYAL OAK HOTEL SENIORS: How to butcher the ball in an easy lesson was the only way to describe our use of the football. Although the conditions were trying that is no excuse for what we dished up. Better players were Kyle Parsons on debut, Daniel Harrison, Vaughnie and the Jacks in Barclay and Worrell.
50 ACRES BISTRO RESERVES: Great display of football in atrocious conditions and holding the opposition goalless was terrific
defensively and being able to manufacture 10 our way was meritorious. Best were Cam Watson, Boofa, Alex Molyneux and every other player who braved those conditions.
TASMAN MEATS COLTS: The combine side went down to Endeavour Hills by 16 points, considering the playing group have had no time together the only way is up from here on.
GARDEN OF GOOD & EVIL BAR AND RESTAURANT THIRDS: An excellent win over last years premiers. The performance in strong winds was pleasing for the coach and our players can look forward to a successful year. Today we are heading to Endeavour Hills, so another win is vital.
SANDOWN GREYHOUNDS DIV 2 & 4 NETBALL: All matches were abandoned due to the weather unfortunately making the courts unsafe.
GOODCHILD BUILDERS DIV 6 & 7 NETBALL: As above.

DIVISION 2: CLUB NOTES DIVISION 2: CLUB NOTES
CLAYTONCWB MEATS SENIORS REPORT We started the game with great intensity around the contest in what was a hard fought match in tough conditions. We were wasteful in front of goal which ended up costing us at the end of the day.
Glenn Tuckwell battled all day, while Jack Day was marking everything that went in his direction.
-Coach Jayden Gilmour
State Gas Appliances Reserves Report Running out onto the ground, rain in your face and the coaches box blown over by the wind was that strong reminder to us all that footy season is here!
Before the game I asked for four quarters of footy, that’s what I got from all of my boys, we were ferocious! Ran in numbers, smothered, shepherded and the talk was awesome! We made sure we did all the one percenters. At no stage did we look like losing because of our hunt, our want, our need to win and turn this season around.
Great team effort from all involved.
-Coach Micky Wills.
From the President: Don’t forget we have a MASSIVE day of football at Meade Reserve this Sunday 22nd, with our women kicking off against Chelsea at 9:45am. Then we have the reserves and seniors battling it out with Keysborough from 12pm in our ANZAC Clash. We look forward to hosting all our supporters in what is set to be a great day at Clayton.
President Greg Collins
EAST BRIGHTONSeniors It’s not rocket science! You cannot afford to give an opposition 4 goals start let alone 7 before you realise you’re actually playing football but that’s exactly what we’ve seen over the past 2 weeks and if you continue to operate that way , it’s fair to say, you’ll experience the same results. Both the first 2 games were winnable but now the team finds itself with it’s back to the wall. This week will be a tough ask against Mount Waverley and will require a 4 quarter effort.
Reserves A miserable day to play football didn’t help but this team needs to simply get back to basics. Over use of the football brings even the best teams undone when compared to more efficient use. Simply, that means
reducing the area for error by using it less.
The results so far have not reflected the talent available but the team is doing itself a disservice by over finessing. Back to the basic, get ball! Kick ball!
Under 19’s Great to have the Colts fielding a team even though undermanned with only 17 players and against Dingley that was always going to present a tough task. The boys battled on manfully and provided a contest but were simply out gunned by a more complete unit. This week at home will present another challenge so numbers are very important. Stick at it fellas, work hard and success will follow.
Women The season starts now for the girls after a pretty good 2017 but that is all past history
at present. Numbers have been encouraging and have been nurtured by new Coach Bec Ticli. It would be a great start to the season to come home with the 4 points.
Social A Tribute to Rod Johnson, club stalwart is to be held at the rooms on Saturday April 28th after the Keysborough game. Tickets are $35.00 for this prestigious event to recognise Rod’s contribution to East Brighton Football Club. Pre- bookings are essential to get your seat. HAMPTONThe under 19s had their first game in wild and wet conditions at Bentleigh. It was never going to be a high scoring game due to the conditions but both sides managed to run the ball into the wind and bomb it long. The game was in the balance at half time but weight of numbers saw Bentleigh draw clear in the second half. Our ruckwork at the stoppages was great to watch but we only managed three goals from our hard work, one each to Casey, Blair and Lefebvre. Our best on the day were Reed, Smith, Lefebvre, Eckers and Sheperd.
The ressies game started well for us kicking the first major but Caulfield gained the ascendancy and were the better team in the first half. They outnumbered us at the ball and could have been more than two goals up
at the main break. We spoke about changing certain facets of our game, playing two way football and ensuring Caulfield weren’t able to have coverage behind the ball. Chicken Nixon played like a duck in the wet second half conditions leading the way putting his head over the ball at every contest. In a see-sawing contest we hit the front in the last five minutes only to see Caulfield kick a goal and lead by a point. We got the clearance and with grit and determination held the ball in our forward 50 until a Caulfield rebound kick was marked 40m out by Tom Hamilton. As cool as the weather Tom put it through the big sticks to give us back to back victories.
The senior game started and the sun appeared straight after Cracker had slotted the first goal from the middle of a pack of players. The wind was still blowing across the ground which made for a scrappy affair
which was going to be won by the more committed side. Our midfield led by Gunda, Cracker, Cal White and Westy got us first use of the ball but poor discipline saw us unable to hold the ball into our forward line. We took a five point lead into three quarter time but the wind was going to be a big factor in the last quarter as it was now blowing directly down the ground. Caulfield gave us a lesson of commitment, teamwork and discipline in the last quarter to pile on seven goals. We will need the week to regroup to face an undefeated Highett who have Ed Turner (Road) and Mitch Hoar in good form. This week we have a luncheon to celebrate our 1978 flag and a past players day with a 12 midday start.
Thank you to our 2018 Sponsors – Javen Constructions, Franks Cafe, Bank Highett, Local Milk Supply, Highett RSL, Choices Flooring Frankston, Removals By The Bay.
MOUNT WAVERLEYJELLIS CRAIG MONASH SENIORS UPDATE No Keemy (Playing Coach & Midfield Beast), No Kouta (Co-Captain & gun midfielder), No AJ (Co-Captain & Power Forward), No JJ (highly skilled Midfielder) and No Thirks (gun silky half-back flanker), no worries.
Coming up against relegated Div 1 club Clayton and new local rival, we weren’t confident of a successful outcome. But with stand-in Skipper Ethan Tobias and “Co-Skipper” Joey Rickard, we cannot be more proud of the guys, they dug deep and got the WIN! A fast start and three straight goals from Caleb who was slotting them from everywhere, was the start we needed. Clayton then started to get on top and got the next three goals to even things up at the first break.
The second quarter saw Jamma and Ben dominate in the middle with two goals from Jamma, with Joey sneakily trying to claim one of them with the slightest of toe pokes. We went into the main break eight pts up in very slippery and windy conditions. Also saw Phil get carried off with a knee injury, so the guys had a lot to come up against.
The second half was another great team defensive effort as every Clayton attack was shut down.
We ended up winning by 18 pts with CJ giving a clear push in the back but quickly playing on to bamboozle the umpires and kick the sealer! Better players for the day were Jamma who was BOG with a strong display winning plenty of clearances. Caleb was a livewire up forward with 5 goals. Ben continued his good form from round one with another polished game through the midfield. Skipper Ethan stood up in defence getting plenty of it and shutting down
Clayton’s dangerous forward. Jazz was instrumental with his intercept marking at CHB and his effective taps in the ruck and Matty Tighello showing plenty of dash and skill streaming down the ground.
BENSONS CAFÉ RESERVES REPORT Unfortunately we went down to a more determined Clayton in really challenging conditions by 41 points. Matched it with them in the second half, but wasn’t enough to get the win. Better players for the day included Burnsy with a dominant display in the middle. He won plenty of it, took them on and carried our midfield. Nangles was strong in defence and his skill and experience stood out. Taters courage and attack on the ball gave inspiration to the group. Ezra is getting better each week with his work rate and athleticism. Cerni was good plugging holes in defence and Ant Cormick was everywhere on the wing. We are starting to play better as a unit and our first win will happen soon!
MURRUMBEENAMixed results for our first home game in our centenary year. The reserves won a hard fought match in difficult, cold and raining conditions. The boys played well all day to eventually run out comfortable winners.
Congratulations to Josh Godino for playing his 50th. Great first game for the club by Tim McGaw.
The seniors and Keysborough put on a high standard game, with the Beena fading in the last quarter. Congratulations to Sam Parkes
on playing his 150th game for the club.
Great to host Stephen Barnes (SFNL Hall of Fame member) at the club, to receive life membership of the MFNC. Stephen is an ex Beena Captain/Coach, Captain and President. Congratulations Barnsey.

Round 3– Another away game as we head to Meade Reserve in Haughton Road to take on Clayton. For the past few years Clayton have been a first division club so we will need to be wary of their experience and play to our best availability to ensure our winning ways continue.

HEATHERTONMelbourne Food Distributors Senior Football Report There was a big crowd at Heatherton Recreation Reserve in anticipation of the first clash between Heatherton and Endeavour Hills in senior footy. Unfortunately it wasn’t the weather that rained on our parade on Saturday. EH showed why they played off in the grand final last year as they piled on seven goals to our one in the first quarter. It was a hard slog in the second and we just took the honours but didn’t get the scoreboard credit we deserved. The second half was all EH. Cal was our stand out, Corka & Stef were never gave up down back, Cyril showed a bit of magic. Nathan will be better for the run after his first game.
Cody Gems & Jewellery Reserves Football Report In some horrible conditions we kicked off our 2018 campaign against last year’s reserve grade premiers Endeavour Hills. Kicking against a howling breeze the boys
were able to hold firm in the first and only conceded one goal to the quarter time break. The game wasn’t pretty but the boys played the conditions well. The game was still very much in the balance at three quarter time with only a couple of goals in it, but the boys continued to hit the contest harder than our opposition and this was probably main reason we walked away with the four points. Beaver and Andy worked tirelessly all day through the middle and Shags down back was superb. A great start to the year and a sign of good things to come for the rest of the year.
Netball The weather wreaked havoc with the netball with all matches in D2 D4 D5 D6 D7 being abandoned. D1 kicked off their title defence with a tight 4 -2 over Dingley and D9 had an exciting 10 all draw with Sth Yarra. D3 had a bye.
Volunteers Thanks to the following people who gave their time on Saturday and Sunday to

SOUTH YARRAThe Brady Tiling Wrap Up The netballers started in wet and wild conditions in Dingley before it was cancelled in the interests of player safety.
The Thirds made the trek out to a windy Cheltenham on Saturday morning for their first away match of the season. Following a call out an hour before the game they managed to put together a team of 17 players, who were all keen to back up round ones great win with another strong performance.
Using a strong breeze to dominate the play in the first quarter, wastefulness in front of goal prevented them from converting this dominance into an early lead and they entered the first break down by three points, having kicked five behinds. The second quarter saw the dominance of play reversed with the change of ends, however Cheltenham were able to take advantage where South Yarra weren’t, sending home nine goals to take a 51-point lead into the main break.
Following half time, the Yarras once again enjoyed the benefits of kicking with the wind, and this time were able to convert their dominance into goals, kicking four for the quarter. Although the results were better, inaccuracy continued to plague the side in front of goal and a score of 4.14 at the final break left them trailing by 20 points despite
having enjoyed five more attempts at goal. As the wind was accompanied by heavy rain, this deficit was always going to be too much to overcome for an undermanned Yarra’s outfit, and a scrappy final quarter saw Cheltenham emerge 37 point winners.
Despite the score line, there was much to be encouraged by for the Thirds. Most players relished the extra game-time offered by the absence of an interchange bench and enjoyed solid individual performances. Additionally, the upside of missing some regular players for Dallas was the opportunity to trial some players in different positions to usual, providing options for the remainder of the season.
The reserves and seniors played new comers to division 3, Springvale Districts. The conditions were worse than a Donald Trump tweet. The reserves welcomed a new look, with its new coach, Anton Tidmarsh, its new captain, Blake Tolley and his vice captains, Christopher Dore and Daniel Murphy. Furthermore, there were at least five debutants and we welcomed back four past players. The Yarras started fantastically with Lange booting two goals and Muzza contributing to a goal as well and we held a two goal lead at quarter-time. Lange booted another in the second term before the siren but the Yarras were down by seven points at the major break. Unfortunately the Yarras couldn’t find a way to score another goal and were strangled by the opposition’s full press and the horrible conditions. Gliddon assisted his midfield by
dominating the ruck contests whilst Scarlo was in and under every pack. The stalwarts of the backline, Costello and Presland were incredible. Springvale Districts were victors by 35 points.
The seniors begun the game kicking against the wind and allowed Springvale to get a five goal to one jump. Dave Cannizzo looked to spark the boys with a beautiful snap after being set up by best mate Cory Brady. Sauce was great in the ruck but more polish kept Springvale around the six goal margin for the rest of the day. Smithy battled well down back, Steg, Bird Maher and Pane Jnr all featured in the bests. The final result a 55 point loss. Given the opposition are touted as early favorites for the flag the lads played well and will take many positives into next weeks game against Blackrock back at the Den.
Girls footy also got off to a flyer with a great win in their first practice match against Chelt, their season proper starts next weekend.
Get down and support the club at the first home game of the 2018 Season.
Special thank you to all of our sponsors including Brady Tiling, Hawthorn Hotel, Rounds Real Estate, Simply Health, Hunter Industrials, Safety-Wear, Avon Tyrepower, Bendigo Bank (Surrey Hills/ Canterbury/ Ashburton/ Balwyn), Merchant Electrical, and all 250 Club, past player members, partners and all Player sponsors.
DIVISION 3: CLUB NOTES
ASHWOODSENIORS With the monsoon-like conditions mostly behind us, we started the first quarter kicking into a stiff breeze. The coaches could have been expecting us to take a bit of time to find our feet but we hit the ground running, putting through three goals, with the long sleeved Chris Grove lively early on debut. The defensive unit were rock solid, keeping Black Rock goalless with the wind.
We looked to press our advantage in the second quarter, and added another three goals to hold a commanding 40 point lead heading into half time. Our run and drive from the middle and wings were proving a real handful for our opponents, who remained goalless.
We knew Black Rock would come at us at some stage, and with the breeze turning into a gale, they took full advantage and narrowed the margin to 20 points with a quarter to play.
Some sage words from Mick in the huddle spurred the boys on, and they finished with a wet sail, slamming home the last five goals of the contest to run out comfortable 53 point winners.
Patrick Carroll and Mitch were exceptional in the middle all day, Alex Davies worked up and down the ground tirelessly and Georgey repelled Black Rock attacks all day, along with Dave Masson marshalling the troops superbly.
Ever the opportunist, Jimmy Morrey used his smarts around goal to finish with four goals and Grovesy snagged three of his own.
RESERVES When the team was named Thursday night, club experts thought that we we may have been lacking in pace and match fitness so a hot flat track was not what we needed. What we could not have expected was the heavens opening in the way that it did that made it a good old fashioned slog, perfect for our combination! With sub stations exploding and loose wires everywhere we flicked on our own switch to barrel to a solid victory.
Shane Peake a late call up proved effective with a couple of majors and DOC enjoyed the conditions. On the wing Declan Brooks was effective as was Noah (a name quite suitable to the day) but it was the old stagers Bouncing Bennie, Admiral Nelson and Mo Burley who took us to the chocolates with the home side only bringing up the calicos once for the day. Enough puns!
This was a good win played with great spirit. Congratulations to the great man Josh Burley who could celebrate his 200th in fine style with large travelling support from the Ashwood faithful. 100 to go for 300 Burls! Thanks to the runners, trainers etc who withstood the conditions and also to Dicko who believe it or not suffered hypothermia! Warmer days ahead!
SOCIAL We will be holding our Ladies Day on April 28th. It’s always a fantastic day, and a great way for those partners new to the club to meet everyone. Speak to Jacinta to grab your tickets.
BLACK ROCKIn one of the most trying days for our football club it was great to see so many people help out and assist after the power went out around midday. Thanks to Esher and Tegan who kept the bar and canteen operating.
Netball: After a strong preseason and the introduction of some new ladies, unfortunately all games were abandoned on the weekend. We wish our netballers well for this weekend’s games and also would like to thank them for attending Aunty Betty’s last Thursday night.
Seniors: Unfortunately we went down to a well structured Ashwood side, however with a new coach and nine players on debut we have plenty of upside. Lachy’s post game chat said it all and we know the areas we need to focus on as we take on South Yarra this week.
Best players were Cooper, Dalts, Sanchez and Lawrence.
Reserves: One of the heaviest downpours of rain to ever hit the club occurred early in the game. A mid-week investigation will be held to see if one of our players sought refuge in the opposition coaches box during this period. Again we went down to Ashwood
by 26 points with plenty to work on to ensure we ignite our season.
Best players Durie (eyeing a senior berth) Ballard and Sam Bonser.
Thirds: The highlight on a bleak afternoon by defeating Doveton by 58 points, however we congratulate that club in getting a standalone team for 2018. Parrot certainly has the team on track, so spots will be tight.
Well done Nopper on four goals and best players Andara, Imlach, Coda and JC.
Keep an eye on the social calendar.
HAMPTON PARKFootball Notes Saturday was the first weekend we had all three senior teams in action with the Thirds taking on Dingley at Dingley in gale force winds which made for some very interesting kicking. The boys were undermanned with only 14 players turning up and thanks to Dingley for lending some players so that game could proceed. Dingley handled the windy conditions better and their accuracy saw them prevail by 11 points. Was a good effort by the boys and we will only get better as season continues. Better players were, Macca, Reesy, CJ & A Ton.
The reserves and seniors were at home to Hallam and what can only be described as good timing in both games, the heavens opened during the half time break. Hail and heavy rain partly flooded one end of the ground, making things tricky. The reserves put in an excellent performance and ended up with a 97 point victory over Hallam. Better players on the day were S Ward,
J Ashwood, N Dawes, D Asling, Z McDonald & B Hollingworth.
The seniors took to the field and remarkably the sun came out for five minutes, the wind though was unrelenting. The seniors put in a strong four quarter performance and were too strong for Hallam ending up with a 117 point victory. Better players on the day were, M Henry, H Primrose, J Philpin, C Phillips, N Carver & M Hill.
This week the Thirds are at home whilst Reserves and Seniors head to Ashwood.
Social Tonight after the game we have our first function HPFNC Frat Party starting at 7.30pm in the clubrooms. Come and get dressed up as your best cheerleader, jock, geek, footballer, basketballer or pimp attire. Games and shots will be going all night long. DIVISION 4: CLUB NOTES
CARRUM PATTERSON LAKESCPLFNC – 2018 - We are on the hunt!
Horrible conditions soured our first home game celebrations during the day, but the players from both sides in both games cracked in and braved the elements to entertain the brave souls that came to watch!
There was a bit of a sombre air around the club also, due to the sudden loss of one of our Pride amongst the junior ranks - Brendan Dillon, so our players wore black arm bands in respect. Condolences to wife Tamara and children Ned and Billie, and the rest of family and friends.
Footy: Our Longbeach RSL Reserves adjusted to the conditions slower than our opponents, this is what cost us in the end. John Psaras Coach was pleased with our last quarter that saw us threaten to pinch the match, playing footy that is expected of a talented list. But ultimately was disappointed with the lost opportunity in the end, especially after a bye in the first round.
Our Bay City Holden Seniors locked into an epic arm wrestle, but unlike our Reserves adjusted to the conditions and ended up running over the top of the gallant Lyndhurst lads for a fantastic win! Cain Padman is thrilled with the endeavour of his chargers and is excited to be 2 and 0, with the knowledge that there is still plenty of improvement to come.
Netball: The Horrible conditions prompted the Netball Competition to be abandoned, a shame as we had penned in two wins! The girls are champing at the bit to get stuck into their games this weekend coming!
Despite the weather post-match celebrations, with the aid of live music, kicked on with a packed house, making the room nice and warm for all to thaw out!
President Notes Big ANZAC HOME GAME (21st April!) playing for the Longbeach RSL Cup and Medal!

FRANKSTON DOLPHINSAnother fantastic result for our senior men with a convincing win over Cerberus, whilst our women played in the SFNL Round Robin competition and showed they will be a force to be reckoned with this season.
Great to have the new CEO of the SFNL Mike Palmer in attendance for our first home game, I’m sure he would have been impressed with what he saw.
Last Friday night saw the official ceremony to commission our new lights, with a number of dignitaries in as the switch was officially flicked on our wonderful new lights providing us with spectator quality lights on both grounds.
A reminder that round four sees us hosting CPL at home, followed by a twilight game against Sandown on May 5 with Development Squad kicking off at 2:30pm and Seniors at 4:45pm. This will be our first home game under lights for points so ink it into your calendar now.
Senior Men Our seniors took on Cerberus on Saturday in our first home game for the season thanks to Fix Sell Pay.
Strong winds and heavy rain greeted the teams as they ran onto the ground and it looked like it was going to be a dour low scoring affair, with the wind favoring one end.
The first quarter saw us kicking with the wind, but not taking full advantage on the scoreboard. Our back line held strong keeping Cerberus to only 2 points, with Regan Hall a standout, whilst Kerrigan and Mehrtens were strong through the middle of the ground giving our midfielders first use of the footy.
We used the ball well in the second quarter into the wind, scoring two goals and holding Cerberus to one goal four behinds in the face of huge winds.
The third quarter was the Andy Lee and Jaiden Peters show, with both racking up huge possessions and using the ball perfectly in very tough conditions, resulting in us kicking two with the wind, whilst keeping Cerberus to a solitary score.
The last quarter saw our boys really stamp their
dominance on the game and get due reward for effort kicking six into the wind whilst containing Cerberus to just two to ice the game.
A fantastic hard fought battle!
Senior Women Our women travelled to Port Melbourne to take part in the SFNL Round Robin and test themselves out against the opposition in a new league in what were tough conditions.
The girls came up against last year’s grand finalists Oakleigh District first up and showed that they are going to be competitive this year, going down by 10 points in a result that didn’t reflect the close nature of the game.
Our second extended game of the day saw us take on Lyndhurst during which we sustained a few injuries in the first half, resulting in us having reduced numbers on the field, but the girls showed great spirit and battled on and although beaten 47 to 22, showed some fantastic signs for the season ahead.
The Finsider
LYNDALEThe weekend began on Friday evening when our ladies took on Officer FNC in a practice match. The night could only be described as a monumental success! A huge crowd was on display and the women played an exceptional brand of football. Led by Adrian Gration and Danny Hartley the improvement from their first practice match was apparent from the first bounce.
Better players were Alicia George, Kaitlyn Ligthart, Chantelle Marshall, Michelle Thomas and Kirsty MacDonald. They have a final practice match this Friday night when they take on Warragul at home starting at 7.30pm. Then the season proper starts with another game under lights at Lyndale as they take on Murrumbeena starting at 5.45pm
On Saturday our Netballers made a great start to their season with what can only be described as atrocious conditions. The SFNL made the decision to cancel all 1.20pm & 2.40pm games due to the rain and wind meaning our division six ladies never took
to court and will start the season with a draw.
Div 3 was led by Andrew Nguyen and won 9-7. He was very happy with his defence work today, special mention Julie Eggens and Elaine Parkinson, for a strong game.
Div 8 was led by Barbara Ruston to a victory of 17-5. Very happy with their team play, they bonded and read each other so well. Few girls playing positions they were only trained in for the last month and killed it, well done Stacey Purcell, fantastic shooting and Chantelle Ruston very strong feeding in the ring.
Our Footballers went 1-1 on the weekend with our reserves losing by 17 points in tough conditions. Better players on the day were Tinny, Sok, The Allen Brothers, Lewis Forshaw and Kooka.
The seniors got off to a great start kicking three goals against the wind in the first and continued their work to lead by 38 points at half time. After the break Sandown were able to curtail our influence somewhat and in the end we came away with a comfortable 25 point victory. Josh Kyle was by far our
best and Maxy Little, Manuel Jackonia, Smurf and Kerr also being prominent. Our goal kickers were led by Trev with 4 and Shane Thomas and Trent Day kicking 3 each.
Social Memberships are available for $25 which includes stubby holder, keyring and membership card which entitles you to members pricing at the bar.
Saturday May 12th is past players evening as we take on CPL under lights at Barry Powell, tickets to the function cost $35 and includes BBQ dinner, free beer wine and soft drink and discounted spirits siren to siren and entertainment.
The Lyndale Football Netball club would like to thank its sponsors for 2018.

There are plenty of sponsorship opportunities for businesses, feel free to contact the club and a member of our sponsorship team will be in touch.
The school holidays are over and competition for senior matches is hotting up. However, with so many additional matches this year (Div 4, more women’s matches and so on) we are still looking for new umpires. If you have friends who would like to be part of our great game, to make new friends, earn a few dollars and get fit, bring them down to Bricker Reserve Moorabbin East, at 6pm every Tuesday and Thursday. Alternatively, encourage them to contact the SFNL office for more information about becoming an umpire.
A number of umpires have made their SFNL debut already this year. Some are in their first year of boundary or goal umpiring, while others like Jack Murfett, who has four years of VFL experience behind him, are already very accomplished. Our star recruit this year is former AFL Grand Final goal umpire Luke Walker, who is trying his hand at field umpiring. He umpired his first match for us with Al Manning and the President looked after him well.
The SMJFL has proved a great recruiting ground for the SFLUA with many of our younger umpires having made the transition from the Juniors to our senior ranks. In return, it would be great of more SFNL umpires could put their hands up to run with the SMJFL, and to mentor the umpires who will most likely be the future of our own Association. Speak with Nick Bergman if you can help out.
Former SFNL boundary umpire John Cooper chalked up his 100th senior game as a VFL boundary umpire last week. Coops is regularly seen at SFNL games, often supporting sister Elise, who has returned to the SFNL this year after umpiring for the past two years in the Northern Territory. He is the only umpire that we know of who has completed a full back flip in a televised game. He also claims to have won a professional mile race at the Rye athletics meeting.
While Coops brought up his VFL milestone, several of his SFNL mates have milestones coming up in the near future. Troy Learmonth umpired his 100th SFNL match last week, although he has a fair way to go to catch older brother Scott’s tally. Paul Creedon reaches his 100-game milestone next week, while Molly Bowman will reach the 100-game milestone in her first appearance for 2018.
Goal umpire David Mandelbaum will notch his 600th game with us in the next fortnight. Dave has multiple Div 1 senior grand finals on his CV and is looking to add to that tally this year. Michael Schembri retired eight years ago but each year returns to do some cameos in the Colts. He needs three more matches to reach the 500-game mark, although some would suggest that the day he broke down at St Kilda City five minutes into the first quarter shouldn’t be included. Given Mick’s bad luck with injuries, he will most probably reach his milestone in Round 18. Other likely milestones this year should involve Kevin Mitchell and Geoff Todd reaching 400
games, Anthony D’Amico and John Auditore reaching 300 games, and Tane Abbott and Swooper (Michael Lambert) reaching the 200-game mark.
Some of our umpires have featured in the media recently (and thus providing income for the trip away fund). Sam Crigan appeared in his Melbourne gear on AFL 360 recently. His dejected look suggests that he isn’t expecting the Dees to have a good year. Peter Martin appeared in the Leader newspaper spruiking the value of concrete bollards. Someone unkindly suggested that he feels at home amongst the bollards because they move at the same pace as he does.
Scott Learmonth is devastated that his mate Joel Lewis is heading overseas for six months to play cricket and was so distressed that he barely got to pre-season training. He claims that he will be in contention for the annual training award again, but he may be a little delusional. Marshie will have to find someone else to pick on with Joel off the scene.
Chris Hughes suffered several near-death experiences in an off-season trip to Thailand. After imbibing some local liquor, he foolishly challenged a much larger opponent in a Thai boxing match but somehow lived to tell the tale. He also attended an “Ultra Music Festival” where he somehow upset the local constabulary who proceeded to give him a full body search. Evidently, they couldn’t find anything under his clothing, and he was sent on his way. Hannah Bailes evidently attended the Beyond the Valley Music Festival over summer but seems a little vague about what she saw there.
Please remember to note anything “unforeseen” from your match day on the Competition Match Report. Let’s help each other and improve the overall match day experience for all Umpires by recording any issues regarding the behaviour of officials, coaches, players or crowd. You should also report any use of the Green, Yellow or Red card and melees.
Report Sheets are available to be collected from Bricker Reserve on any training night.
It is a compulsory requirement for all Field, Boundary and Goal Umpires to be accredited to at least Level 1 under the AFL National Umpires Accreditation Scheme. Go to the SFNL website at http://sfnl.com.au/umpiring/register/ (under the umpiring tab) for further information.
Our umpires’ escorts are just that – escorts! If an escort insists on advising umpires on how to umpire (or worse), advise the team manager that you want the escort replaced, and note the matter on the CMR. We get enough advice already from off the field!
Remember that:

ANGELO SOLDATOS MADISON MCGAWPLAYER OF THE DAY
It was a tough old decision to award the Blackchrome award last Saturday, given the even spread of contributors the Dingoes had in their victory over Mordialloc, but the radio boys were very impressed but Ferguson’s four-quarter efforts. The dreadlocked winger won a stack of possessions through the centre of the ground and combined well with the likes of Lucas Walmsley and Chris Horton-Milne. His efficiency with the ball in the wet conditions was outstanding and absorbed the physical nature of the contest with aplomb.
Congratulations, Josh!

Farrington has always been a highly promising junior footballer, having played at TAC Cup level for the Dragons. A former Dingoes junior, the 18-year-old stands an imposing 194cm, and used his size to advantage at the weekend, booting five goals in a best afield display in his side’s Round 1 win over the Vampires. Farrington has all the attributes to carve out a lengthy and successful senior football career at Souter Oval.
Congratulations, Jack!
