Please slowly and clearly state the name of the meeting or activity, names of those attending, and your contact number. From the Rabbi O L -L E OA R In February our most recent bar mitzvah stu- dent brilliantly read the moments leading up to the Redemption of the Red Sea. In my words of Torah to him, I pointed out that the “reward” for lifting his hands and leading the way through the “sea” was spending his life- time in the wilderness, making his journey toward the Promised Land. Adolescence is the transition from the “comfort” (controlled, structured, predictable existence of childhood) to the responsible, accountable and chal- lenging world of adult- hood. The transition is by nature tumultuous and at times very lonely, but the journey is designed to be done alone. Best case scenar- io: our family, mentors and teachers are here to assist us in learning to navigate; worse case, God’s presence in our lives means we are never alone. I prefer “both/and”. Pesach (the Festival of Passover) is a universal metaphor for the human life experience. Every human being crosses “the sea” and spends their life jour- neying through the wilderness. Rabbi Amy Scheinerman gives a voice to the piece of Torah that tells the sto- ry of y’tziat Mitzvayin (the Exodus from Egypt). She teaches us that this story tells us who we are about, where we come from, where we are headed, and what values should fuel our journey. “Our purpose is all about redemption.” The pageantry of the Passover Seder is legion. It is always delightful and deeply meaningful to see the parade of symbols anew through the eyes of non-Jewish guests at our table experiencing a seder for the first time. They immediate- ly make connections to the world we all inhabit. Maror (bitter herbs) and salt water bespeak the pain and agony of servitude - physically, politically, and emotionally - of so many in the world still in need of redemption on every level. Charoset (sweet relish) embodies the promise that bitterness and pain can give way to sweet- ness and freedom - it is thus a symbol of hope. Four cups of wine bespeak God’s promises of redemption that we can make real for others through our commitments and actions when we are God’s hands in the world. Passover eve is a night of spectacle that can andshould, extend its reach throughout the year. One way to do this is to keep its symbols aliveand vibrant. We can bring the symbols of Pesachinto our daily discourse. We can teach andenable people to “see the world through Jewisheyes” continually. Even more, we keep alive themeaning of y’tziat Mitzrayim - the divine goal ofredemption - and give it the vibrancy to inspireus all the more. (Voices of Torah, page 602).

Passover is the first holy festival of our holy daycycle. The High Holy Days occur in the seventhmonth; Passover occurs in the first month. YomKippur (Day of Atonement) gives us a metaphor-ical taste of our deaths (if we allow it to);Passover teaches us as long as we have beatinghearts, working minds and willing spirits, redemption is possible.

Passover is my favorite sacred celebration. Thisyear will be a more literal Exodus from Egyptthan years past. At the end of this year’s exo-dus, I will get my life back ... and find myselfcontinuing to journey through the wilderness. Areturn to a healthier life will be my redemptionthis year.

I wish for all of you a fulfilling, meaningful andinspiring redemption during this Passoverseason.

L’shalom,

Joshua S. Taub, Rabbi

PASSOVER YIZKORKol Israel Chapel

Monday, April 17th5:30 p.m.

For most of us, a day, an hour, a minute doesn’t pass when we don’t think of loved ones who have

gone from this world and are present to us only through the blessing of memory. Memory and grief

are lonely journeys. The irony is that every one of us will make this journey; at one time or another,

for one loved one or another. Jewish tradition’s response to this lonely journey is to create

opportunities for a “community of grief and memory” to come together throughout the year to

remember and to bless. This is the purpose of YIZKOR. Four times during the year: Yom Kippur,

Sukkot, Pesach (Passover) and Shavuot, we gather as a congregation of mourners. Those whose

losses are more recent stand alongside those whose experiences are more remote. Together we

support each other and remind one another that the light can and will return; that hope and blessing

remain alive. Please join us for Yizkor Worship, Monday, April 17 in the Kol Israel Chapel.

From Our Temple President

T E P 3

Deli Day 2017 was a huge success! Thanks to Sisterhood president Robin

Goebel, Co-Chairmen Cheryl Barenberg and Mindy Eisen, along with all

our members, male and female who gave our community a wonderful ex-

perience. Jimmy Simmons provided incredible musical entertainment – it

was SRO with those using the stage as a table!

I am happy to report that Rabbi Matt Michaels will be worshipping with us

from time to time while Rabbi Taub is on medical disability. He is sched-

uled to be here an average of twice a month with our dependable and

wonderful lay leaders assisting the other weekends. Rabbi Michaels’ next

few visits will be:

April 14-16 If you need to speak with him during these days, please

April 28-30 call Jane in the Temple Office and she will let Rabbi

May 12-14 Michaels know.

My thanks again to Cynthia Wolf for coordinating the effort of Brian Alter, Stephen Bender,

Bobby Chapman, Jay Eisen, Beverly Hickman-Hay, Bruce Hoffer, Joshua & Paul

Horwitz, Wayne Margolis, Ken Parker, Marleen Swerdlow, and Gene Thomas & Alice

Myers.

We will be celebrating with a second night Passover Seder on Tuesday, April 11th. Our thanks

go to Sherry Horwitz for coordinating and conducting this event. Please make reservations

early so preparations can be made in advance. This is open to the public – all are invited.

Lamar University will be holding a Diversity and Inclusion Conference on Saturday, April 8th.

Temple Emanuel will give the keynote address at noon that day in McDonald Gym.

I want to remind everyone we will have our annual Social Justice Shabbat on May 19th as well

as the dedication for The Orchard. Please let Cynthia Wolf know if you would like to play a

role in these exciting events for our Temple. We are in the process of collecting food to stuff

bags for the homeless and Veterans. Please continue to bring donations through the first

Friday in April.

Congratulations to Rita Davis who will be the Board of Trustees representative on the En-

dowment Committee.

Brian Alter has secured arrangements for the Rosinger Dinner speakers – Chihiro

Sugihara, grandson of Chiune Sugihara (the Japanese Schindler) and Cellin Gluck – director of

the film Persona Non Grata. Our thanks to Rita & Barry Davis for providing the travel ar-

rangements for Mr. Sugihara and Brian & Lori Alter for providing arrangements for Mr. Gluck.

This program details his incredible life and the rescue of thousands of Jews during the

Holocaust. Estimates are that 40,000 descendants of refugees Mr. Sugihara saved are alive

today. Please join us October 19th for the remarkable story.

Temple Emanuel April 2017 Social Justice Update

P 4 T E

Our 2017 Temple Emanuel Journey is again based on President Allison’s theme, Together inTradition; but the Temple Emanuel Social Justice Committee thinks of it this way: Together inTradition through tikkun olam! We, therefore, plan and provide tangible ways throughout theyear to translate Torah into action, helping those in need in Southeast Texas and beyond. Wehave a tradition at Temple Emanuel of making a mitzvah difference through tikkunolam as part of Temple Emanuel’s Love Thy Neighbor initiative!

2017 TESJ Projects

Food Bags for the Homeless, including some Homeless Veterans: We started collect-ing food on Friday, March 3; and we will fulfill 200 bags as an intergenerational activity on Fri-day, April 7. P lease bring pop-top CANS of meats, pastas, veggies, soups, and/or fruits;packages of peanut butter crackers, cheese crackers and/or small packages of cookies; quan-tity packs of small water bottles. If interested, please send check to Temple Emanuel withmemo note: Social Justice/Homeless. We have a tradition of feeding the hungry!

Disaster Relief is ongoing: In February, a designated donation of $150 was sent toJewish National Fund for the planting of trees in Israel. We have a tradition of helping otherswhen faced with the need for Disaster Relief!

The Orchard is ongoing: The Dedication of The Orchard will be May 19! Besides thetrees donated to The Orchard by Bruce Hoffer, additional trees can be sponsored for $70 pertree and that includes the professional planting of the tree. We read these words every Pass-over: Let all who are hungry come and eat. However, early on during the planning of the ex-pansion of The Orchard, we came up with this variation: Let all who are hungry come to TheOrchard! We have a tradition of allowing the stranger to pick fruit from The Orchard.

Kosher for Passover (KP) Food for Jewish Soldiers: The international network thatwe are part of for supporting our Jewish soldiers where they are, especially during Jewish holi-days, has requested that rather than our buying KP cheese at Belden’s and then shippingpackages via Priority Mail, that we mail the lay leader who services the Africom area a checkthat will cover KP cheese bought in France and that will travel on military plane. We spendapproximately $250 each year on this project, so thank you to those in our community whodonate specifically for this project. Each recipient of KP cheese will receive a copy of a letterfrom Temple Emanuel wishing them a Happy Passover. We have a tradition of providing Ko-sher for Passover Food for Jewish soldiers where they are!

Southeast Texas Food Bank is ongoing: There are many volunteer opportunities atSoutheast Texas Food Bank: Family Box Day, Non-Food Sorting, School Tools and more.Once a volunteer at Southeast Texas Food Bank, updates are shared from the Food Bank viaemail about weekly and monthly volunteer opportunities. We have a tradition of volunteeringat the Southeast Texas Food Bank!

Social Justice Shabbat and the blessing of our Sacred Sages: Save the Date: May19!
