The deadline to register for this celebration is Monday, April 23, 2018. Easter Greetings! As we begin the Second Week of Easter, we are reminded by the Gospel reading from John that Jesus intentionally and insistently brought peace to his disciples as He entered the locked room they were hidden in, after His resurrection, and said to them twice Peace be with you.He then said "Receive the Holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained." Not only did Christ want to reassure His disciples and grant them fully the peace of the resurrection, but He sends them to share His mercy for His people by giving them the ability and permission to forgive sins. This points to the sacrament of reconciliation (confession) in which Christ actively forgives through His priests who carry on the mission given by Christ to His apostles. In the confessional Christ is present through His priests showing His divine mercy and forgiveness. This matches up well with Divine Mercy Sunday in which we celebrate the powerful image and message of Divine Mercy which the Lord has given us through Sister Maria Faustina Kowalska in Poland in the 1930’s. This message and image simply verifies and brings to life what we already know through Sacred Scripture and through the tradition and teachings of the Church. Below are three excerpts. The first is from St. Faustinas diary. The second is a quote from Saint Pope John Paul II who is also from Poland and who canonized St. Faustina. The third quote is from Pope Benedict XVI in a 2008 address. My daughter, tell the whole world about My inconceivable mercy. I desire that the Feast of Mercy be a refuge and shelter for all souls, and especially for poor sinners. On that day the very depths of My tender mercy are open. I pour out a whole ocean of graces upon those souls who approach the Fount of My mercy. The soul that will go to Confession and receive Holy Communion shall obtain complete forgiveness of sins and punishment. Let no soul fear to draw near to Me. It is My desire that it be solemnly celebrated on the first Sunday after Easter. Mankind will not have peace until it turns to the Fount of My Mercy. (Diary, no. 699) This was precisely the time when those ideologies of evil, nazism and communism, were taking shape. Sister Faustina became the herald of the one message capable of off-setting the evil of those ideologies, that fact that God is mercy—the truth of the merciful Christ. And for this reason, when I was called to the See of Peter, I felt impelled to pass on those experiences of a fellow Pole that deserve a place in the treasury of the universal Church. ~ Bl. Pope John Paul II, Memory and Identity (2005) Mercy is the central nucleus of the Gospel message; it is the very name of God, the Face with which he revealed himself in the Old Covenant and fully in Jesus Christ, the incarnation of creative and redemptive Love. May this merciful love also shine on the face of the Church and show itself through the sacraments, in particular that of Reconciliation, and in works of charity, both communitarian and individual. May all that the Church says and does manifest the mercy God feels for man. ~Pope Benedict XVI, Regina Caeli address, March 30, 2008 In Christ, Fr. Timothy Hayter

Last weekend we celebrated the resurrection of our Lord and the Rite of Initiation at the Easter Vigil Mass. Jesus is risen! Our catechumens and candidates received the Sacraments of Initiation (baptism, confirmation,

and Holy Eucharist) and entered into full communion with the Church. What a blessing! They are now neophytes for one year.

We are very blessed to have a talented, dedicated, and all-around wonderful RCIA team. They have met weekly since last August to journey in faith with our dear catechumens and candidates.

We dedicate this RCIA year to our very dear friend and fellow RCIA team member Louise Wiles. We love you and miss you so very much. A Special Thank You to: Father Rodney and Father Tim (they attended meetings, taught lessons, prayed over us, and help lead us all along the way); Gladys Qualls and the St. Stephen’s Women’s Organization (they fed our group before the Easter Vigil Mass); and Felipe Lazos (he is a work horse and joyfully did the behind-the-scenes jobs none of us wanted to do). Anne Hobbs, Paz Carrizales, and Mary Hanel for leading the hospitality team and making sure we were fed each week! Teachers: Father Rodney; Father Tim; Deacon Luis Mata; Mike Sweeney; and Bill Berry. RCIA met weekly for eight months. During our weekly meetings, we studied 34 in-depth lessons on the foundational teachings of the Catholic Church, we studied 38 Saints of the Day, and we celebrated eight Rites. Our journey included learning detailed information about Jesus and His Church, but the journey was not about only learning information. It was about conversion and transformation. We are leaving our old ways and following our Lord Jesus Christ - that's conversion. We are no longer who we were when this journey started. We have become Catholic Christians, members of the one, holy, Catholic, and apostolic Church - that's transformation. Praise God! Is God calling you into full communion with His Church? Our next RCIA journey begins in August 2018. "RCIA" stands for the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults. It's the process by which adults come into full communion with the Catholic Church by receiving their Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism; Confirmation; and Holy Eucharist). It's free, childcare is provided, we have a lot of fun, and we always have something good to eat. If you have questions or would like to register, please email me at [email protected].

PAPA FRANCISCO.

Saint Teresa of Calcutta was once criticized for placing too much emphasis on charity, and not enough on fighting the social injustices that causes many of the poor to be in the situation they face daily. She responded, “I have said that we take care of one person. Then, if we can, we take care of another. We never cure multitudes. Our vocation is to love each person God brings to us today. Love, tenderness and compassion are real justice. Justice without love is not justice. Love without justice is not love. Often we hear it said that we pamper our poor too much. No one has pampered them except God Himself. It is good that there is at least one religious congregation that pampers the poor. There are more than enough people to pamper the rich.” We pamper the poor when we treat them with the same measure of respect and dignity that we would reserve for the rich. The elderly couple that is left destitute because of medical bills; the young mother abandoned by her husband and left with no immediate means of support; the man who paid for the crime he committed against society and is now out of prison trying to make amends and straighten out his life; all deserve our love and our compassion. Please join us in helping them, one person at a time.
