Dear Friends, My first 3 months at the Tuscarawas County Senior Center have been exciting and
rewarding, I have learned a great deal about the Senior Center and I have met many
wonderful members at the Dover site as well as the five (5) satellites. It has been a
pleasure getting to know the staff that work for all the Centers and learning about the
many programs and services we offer. I want to acknowledge the dedicated staff that go
above and beyond to ensure our Centers are offering quality food, programs and
services for the members.
With a new executive director comes changes. Some changes will be only recognized by the staff but you
as a member may begin to notice some changes as well. In the next few weeks, you will see painters,
repairmen, carpet & floor installers, and a company stripping and waxing our floors. We are preparing
for our 15th anniversary in this facility and its time we reinvest back into the building for our members to
enjoy. Please have patience with us as we continue operations during our time of updating, cleaning and
painting. We have work to do and its our goal to keep the disruption of services to a minimum. Please
understand we will close all rooms in the basement on a Friday, signs will be posted with the date, in
order to get the fitness equipment moved to strip and wax all of the basement floors as well as painting
the rooms and hallways in the basement. We will also close the BINGO room for 1 day to install new
carpet. Again, signs will be posted with the exact dates for your information.
An additional change for 2020 will be the combining of the Volunteer Breakfast and the Virginia Kane Hall
of Fame Fall Gala. We would like to recognize all of our volunteers at the same time and at the same event
which will be on Friday October 23, 2020 from 11:30 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. Please mark your calendars to
attend the Virginia Kane Hall of Fame & Volunteer Appreciation Gala. Tickets will be $10.00, same as
previous years, and our volunteer and Hall of Fame Nominees will receive 2 complimentary tickets, one
for the nominee and one for a guest. Stay tuned for more information to come soon.
Many of you have asked and I am excited to share that the Tuscarawas County Senior Center will be
getting a new parking lot thanks to the Reeves Foundation and their generous donation of $187,000. The
Senior Center Board of Directors approved the use of $50,000 to complete the project. A committee will
be created to begin working on the project. At this point, we do not have an estimated completion date
but I will keep you informed as we move through the process.
Finally, I want to share that the Tuscarawas County Senior Center will be celebrating 15 years in this
facility. We will host an open house on Saturday August 1, 2020 from 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. We will
have food, fun activities, tours, and expo tables to advertise all of the programs and services we offer.
More information will be in the July/August/September newsletter.
Have a wonderful spring!

allocated every year to health clinics, schools, affordable housing and
hundreds of other critical services and programs that make a difference in
our lives every day. Contact Carla Mayfield with questions. A Census
information table will be set up at the Breakfast w/ the Easter Bunny event

18 years and has worked in various specialties such as
Obstetrics, Pain Management, Ambulatory Surgery, PACU,

empathetic care and making a positive difference for others are what drives
her passion for nursing. Outside of work she enjoys spending quality time
with her family and spending time in nature camping, hiking and taking

HEALTH TIP
Coronavirus COVID-19 is in the news. Here is
some information that may help you better
understand the important facts regarding this
virus. The Coronavirus is a respiratory illness
that can produce symptoms such as but not
limited to fever, cough, and shortness of
breath. Older adults and those that are
immune compromised are at a higher risk of
contracting the virus. The virus is thought to
spread via respiratory droplets such as when
an infected person coughs or sneezes. The
best way we can prevent spreading this virus
is taking measures such as frequent hand
washing, avoiding contact with anyone who
has become ill. Avoiding touching your eyes,
nose and mouth. If you become ill you should
stay home. Cover your cough or sneeze in
the bend of your arm (not your hand). Clean
and disinfect frequently touched objects and
surfaces. Call your family physician to notify
them of your symptoms and follow their
advice. Together we can be diligent and take
the appropriate measures to avoid contracting
or spreading this virus.

rehearsal, they take their musical talents out
into the community. This past year, the group
gave 25 uplifting performances for various
social groups around the county. Last summer,
the group participated in the special activities
at the Age of Steam roundhouse near
Sugarcreek. They also traveled to the
Westchester Festival in August.
In September, they held a benefit concert at
Tuscora Park and raised nearly $4000 for the
maintenance of the gazebo and boardwalk.
They always have a lot of fun. Singing keeps
them "Forever Young!" Everyone over the age
of 50 is invited to join them.
