  • 4INTRODUCTION

    The fixed radio, fitted with cassette play-er (radio with cassette player) or with Com-pact Disc player and parametric sound equal-izer (radio with Compact Disc player), hasbeen designed to suit the specific charac-teristics of the passenger compartment, witha personalised design that matches the styleof the dashboard.

    The radio is installed in a user-friendly po-sition for the driver and passenger and thegraphics on the front panel make locationof the controls quick, facilitating use.

    The CD-Changer, if present, is housed inthe right-hand side of the boot.

    To increase security against theft, the setis fitted with a protection system whichmakes its use possible only on the car onwhich it was originally installed.

    The instructions for use are given belowwhich you are advised to read carefully. Theinstructions also include how to control theCD-Changer through the radio. For the in-structions for use of the CD-Changer, referto the specific manual.

    ADVICE

    Road safety

    You are advised to learn how to use thevarious radio functions (e.g.: storing stations)before starting to drive.

    Reception conditions

    Reception conditions change constantlywhen travelling. Reception may be disturbedby the presence of mountains, buildings orbridges particular if far away from the broad-casting transmitter.

    WARNING During the reception of traf-fic information, the volume may be higherthan normal.

    Care and maintenance

    The radio is made in such a way that itdoes not require particular maintenance. Inthe event of a failure, contact Alfa RomeoAuthorised Services.

    To clean the front panel only use a soft,antistatic cloth. Cleaning and polishing prod-ucts might spoil the surface.

    Too high a volume whendriving can put the drivers

    life at risk and that of other peo-ple. Therefore the volume shouldalways be adjusted in such a waythat it is always possible to hearthe noises of the surrounding en-vironment (e.g.: horns, ambulance,police sirens, etc.).

    WARNING

  • 5Cassettes

    To obtain optimum playing conditions wegive the following advice:

    do not use poor quality cassettes, withdistortions or labels detached;

    never leave the cassette in the radiowhen not in use;

    never insert other objects in the cassetteslot;

    do not expose cassettes to the sun orhigh temperatures;

    put cassettes back in their boxes afteruse;

    over time, dirt on the playing headcaused by tapes may reduce the high noteswhen playing. You are therefore advised toclean the head routinely using a specialcleaner taper of the non abrasive type;

    preferably use C-60 cassettes and in anycase no longer than C-90 to ensure the bestplaying conditions;

    avoid inserting cassettes with damagedtapes in the radio, especially if using C-90cassettes, as the tape might come out andget stuck;

    do not lubricate the cassette mecha-nism;

    do not touch the player head with mag-netic or hard objects.

    Compact Discs

    Remember that dirt, marks or distortion onCompact Disc can cause skipping. For topperformance conditions, we give the fol-lowing advice:

    Only use Compact Discs which have thefollowing brand:

    Carefully clean all Compact Discs of fin-gerprints and dust using a soft cloth. Sup-port Compact Discs from the outer circum-ference and clean from the centre outwards.

    After use, put Compact Discs back intheir container, to avoid marks or scratchesthat may cause skipping when playing.

    Do not expose Compact Discs to directsunlight, high temperatures or damp for pro-longed lengths of time to prevent them frombending.

    Do not stick labels or write on the record-ed surface of Compact Discs.

    To remove a Compact Disc from its con-tainer, press the centre and raise the disccarefully, holding it by the outer circumfer-ence.

    Proper way to holdthe compact disc

    Removing the disc

    Never use chemical products for clean-ing (e.g. spray cans, antistatic or thinners)as they might damage the surface of Com-pact Discs.

    Always hold Compact Discs by the outercircumference. Never touch the surface.

  • 6New discs may be rough around the edges.When these discs are used, the player mightnot work or the sound might skip. To removethe roughness from the edge of the disc usea ball-point pent, etc.

    To remove fingerprints and dust, use a softcloth starting from the centre of the Com-pact Disc outwards.

    In bands FM1, FM2 and FMT, if receptionis poor and the AF alternative frequencysearch function is active, the station with thestrongest signal that is broadcasting thesame programme will be sought automati-cally.

    AF function(alternative frequency search)

    Within the RDS system the radio can workin two different modes:

    AF ON: alternative frequency searchon

    AF OFF: alternative frequency searchoff.

    When the signal of the RDS station tunedweakens, the following two cases may oc-cur:

    With AF ON the RDS system activatesautomatic tuning of the optimum frequencyof the station chosen, with the stations en-abled, therefore the radio is automaticallytuned to the station with the strongest sig-nal that is broadcasting the same pro-gramme. During the journey it will thus bepossible to continue listening to the stationchosen without having to change the fre-quency when changing area. Of course, thestation being listened to must be receivablein the area the car is crossing.

    With AF OFF the radio will not tune thestrongest station automatically and it willhave to be found manually using the tunerbuttons.

    To tune alternative frequency searchon/off, keep the AF-TA button (1)pressed until hearing the beep. The nameRDS (if available) stays on the display andif the AF function has been turned on thesymbol AF is shown.

    If the radio is working in the AM band,when the AF-TA (1) is pressed, it pass-es to the FM band on the last station se-lected.

    TA function(traffic information)

    Some stations in the FM band (FM1, FM2and FMT) are enabled to also broadcast in-formation about traffic conditions. In thiscase the display shows the wording TP.

    To turn the TA (traffic information) func-tion on/off, briefly press (less than 1 sec-ond) the AF-TA button (1).

    If it is very cold inside the car and the CDplayer is used a little after turning the heateron, a film of damp may form on the Com-pact Disc or on the player optics and thesound may not be perfect. In this case donot use the CD player for at least an hour,so that the condensation dissolves natural-ly and normal operation is resumed.

    Driving on rough roads with heavy vibra-tions may cause skipping when the CD play-er is working.

    ANTITHEFT PROTECTION

    The radio is fitted with an antitheft pro-tection system based on the entry of the se-cret code associated to each set.

    During the code entry procedure the dis-play shows the word CODE. The set willnot work until the correct code is entered.

    This way the protection system makes theradio unusable after removal from the dash-board in the case of theft.

    Entering the secret code

    Entry of the secret code is required to al-low the radio to work each time it is con-nected to the car electric system.

    Connecting the radio to the car supply, thedisplay shows the word CODE for about2 seconds, followed by four dashes - - --.

    The secret code comprises four figures from1 to 6, each corresponding to one of thedashes.

    To enter the first digit of the code, pressthe corresponding button of the preset sta-tions (from 1 to 6). Enter the other codedigits in the same way.

    If the four figures are not entered within20 seconds, the display shows the wordCODE for 2 seconds and then four dash-es - - - -. This is not to be consideredas an incorrect code entry.

    After entering the fourth digit (within 20seconds), the radio starts working.
