THE MOON’S PROPERTIES
Earth’s Moon
The Moon’s average distance from the Earth is 384,403 km
• Perigee - the closest point to the earth and in this stage that the moon appears larger. The Moon is 363,104 km away from the earth.• Apogee - the most distance point, the distance of the moon from the Earth is 405,504 km.
• Sidereal Month – is the time taken for the moon to make one revolution from particular star back to the same star. It averages 27.32166 days.
• Lunar or Synodic Month – refers to the time required for the moon to pass from a particular phase back to the same phase. It averages 29.53059 days.
- The Moon’s Diameter is about 3,480 km or just ¼ of that the earth. To compare, the moon’s mass is just about 1.2% of that of the earth.
- The average density of the moon is only 3/5 of that of the earth and pull of gravity is only 1/6 than that of the earth’s gravity.
