What is an Argumentative Essay?

“A genre of writing that requires the student to investigate a topic, collect, generate, and evaluate evidence, and establish a position on the topic in a concise manner.”

Argumentative essays involve extensive research of published literature (information/articles/excerpts from books) and other research involving interviewing, data, experiments, and surveys (some done by the students themselves).

The two most important concepts of an argumentative essay are a clear thesis and sound reasoning.

How do I do this?? Choose a controversial topic, preferably one you have a

stance on already. However, if you would like to research a topic and then decide where you stand, that’s fine too.

Heavily research this topic. Look into both information supporting your position and information on the opposing position. A key ingredient to effectively arguing is to be knowledgeable about the other side of the argument.

This type of essay is not something you can throw together the night before it is due. This will require much more time and care. We will work through the process in a detailed way so you may completely grasp the concept of this essay.

Purpose Why should this be important to me? When will it

help me in “real life”? The purpose of this lesson is two fold. First, of course, is to teach you how to write an

argumentative essay. Second, it is to teach you the importance of

educated argumentation. Today, many people may disagree on an issue but are unable to intelligently back-up their opinion/position.
