what’s new in arjeplog this season? There have been many changes in Arjeplog during the last year that have affected and still do affect many people. These are some of the most important ones, some of which we will write about in detail in the coming issues of The Arjeplog Times.

The biggest change that is noticeable by car testers and locals alike is the fact that there is a new management of the Silverhatten/Kraja/Silver Lodge concern.

Jan Edvardsson, who had been managing director for the past ten years, was relieved of his position in May last year. The new managing director is Johan Sund and his wife, Sanna Sund is manager of the hotels.

More about the Silverhatten concern in a coming issue. However, one tangible difference is that there are many more locals working at these establishments now and that the Silver hatten concern has a good relationship with all the local companies. For example Ingo Marklund, who was a DJ at Hatten and Kraja for many years before Jan Edvardsson arrived on the scene, is back in business. Just last weekend he and his wife Tone arranged entertainment at Silverhatten.

Colmis and Simloc (their apartment hotels) have grown in size and there is a new hotel and (private) restaurant on Lugnetvägen (next to the existing building).

As we wrote last year, there is now no doctor on duty after 21.00 at night and at certain times during the weekend. This change began in April, despite the uproar and demonstra-tions concerning this financial cutback. However, there are ambulances available and sisters at the clinic and we will write more about emergency services in the coming weeks.

Talking of medical care, former local doctor, Bo Henricson died last week after a sudden illness. He had worked at the medical centre in Arjeplog for 37 years before his retire-

ment (just a year or so ago) but he was still very involved in the World Health Organization and safe community projects all over the world. His untimely death was a shock and a great loss to his family, friends, the locals and many people who knew and repected him and his work.

David Sundström, aged 90, from Arjeplog passed away recently after a brief illness. He was one of the pioneers of the car testing industry for which he and his partner Per-Axel Andersson (IceMakers) recently received honorary citizen’s awards from the Kommun.

There is also a new ice hotel called Iglootel in Abborrträsk near Arvidsjaur that FlyCar has built and where you can spend a night or two enjoying the cold, arctic winter.

Nordic Air Sweden are planning flights from Arvidsjaur Airport via Umeå to Copenhagen and London, starting at the end of February. Perhaps a good alternative to Nextjet.

The Kommun now has a new website, but unfortunately it is only in Swedish, so far. The web camera facing Lake Hornavan is not functioning but the one facing the market square is still active.Bo Henricson

Our Great Winter Season is Here

Arjeplog, once again, is now prepared for the winter testing season. When all the car testers arrive from

the different countries, Arjeplog changes and becomes a very interesting place on earth. Ice, snow, high tech solu-tions and creatively skilled people make the difference.

This winter Nature has supported the preparations of the ice-tracks in a much better way than last year.

A combination of cold weather and less snow has made good conditions for the local companies to do their early season work.

When I came to Arjeplog, in March last year, to work for the Kommun (municipality) I noticed

the international atmosphere that was set by the mix of nationalities. I realized the importance of the winter testing season and what it means to the local people in Arjeplog. For some people, it is the main business of the year. For others, it is a period of important work. For many, it is a time of interesting experiences with increased activities. People and networking are the keys to further develop-ment.

I wish you all a warm welcome to Arjeplog

for a very promising test season. Enjoy your stay and I hope some of you also consider the potential of visiting Arjeplog during other periods of the year. There could easily be something interesting here for your families and friends as well.

New Head of the KommunThere have also been many changes in the various depart-ments of the municipality (kommun) in Arjeplog. Many new people have started working here and we have a new chief administrative officer, Bo-Erik Berg. He took over the running of the administration of the Kommun after Claudia Zamorano, who has now moved to Stockholm.Bo-Erik Berg has written a column for this issue of The Arjeplog Times.

New Trains do not work in cold and snowEleven brand-new trains from the French/German company Alstom called Coradia Nordic X62, are used in the north of Sweden. At the moment nearly all of them are out of traffic, due to all kinds of problems related to cold and snow.

Norrtåg, the company responsible for the train traffic in the north, says that the trains are tested and should work well in cold climate.

The reality is different and the brakes and electronics are malfunctioning to a large extent. Most of the trains have been replaced by buses in the meantime, but for many people it will be difficult to reach their destinations this winter.

Now they are planning to make new workshops in Luleå in order to repair and service the trains. The problems are expected to continue until next year and Alstom has been asked to explain why their trains don’t work.

Coradia Nordic X62 does not work well in cold climate.
