Jazz people love labels. They just can't help themselves. That's probably because their music defies explanation and often challenges logic. Ask Gerry Malkin, the 63-year old tenor sax player, who calls his ensemble "post bop." Hard to explain, he told me. He used the old Alec Baldwin line: "it's complicated." He threw out themes like stretching harmonies and aggressive interpretation of bebop. Finally, he invoked Coltrane, and then, I sort of kind of understood what I might be hearing on Friday night, September 5th from 8-10:30pm, when he sells out the house at the Arts Exchange with pals and peers whom he called "the best musicians

in the area. Everyone in the band is a major solo artist." Take guest artist Scott Wendholt of Nyack. He's the lead jazz trumpet in the Carnegie Hall Jazz Ensemble who will be jamming with The Gerry Malkin Jazz Collective made up of bass player Mike McGuirk, pianist Jeff Tittson, guitarist Chris Morrison and drummer Bobby Leonard and, of course, Gerry.

But that’s not all. There are nine jazz performances spread over six days... all part of Jazz Fest in White Plains. Check out cabaret singer Alysa Haas at the Arts Exchange on Thursday, September 4th from 8-10:30pm, and then on Saturday, September 6th at the WPPAC, The Blue in Green Project: A Tribute to Miles Davis will be presented by ArtsWestchester and White Plains Performing Arts Center (WPPAC) in its the 400-seat theater, start-ing at 8pm. The ground-breaking sounds and styles of Miles Davis will be rendered by guitarist Wali Ali, pianist Bob Baldwin, saxophonist Ray Blue, bassist Harvie S, trumpeter Antoine Drye and drummer Tony Jefferson.

Those interested in catching the ArtsWestchester and WPPAC performanc-es might consider purchasing a Jazz Pass. New this year, a Jazz Pass will grant the holder access to all three ticketed Jazz Fest events at a discount-ed rate. Digital Arts experience Launches tech truck

The Digital Arts Experience (DAE), located in White Plains, recently announced the launch of a mobile computer lab. Its goal is to work with schools and organizations, especially those that have lim-ited technology resources or space. Explains DAE President Rob Kissner, "Our lab combines the experience of being at The DAE, with the convenience of our coming to you.” The Freightliner Sprinter’s Mercedes Bluetec technology allows for the vehicle to be parked without creating offensive odors or harmful fumes. the Farm project Features Local ArtistsFor its ninth season at Saunders Farm, Collaborative Concepts has invited more than 50 local and national artists to perform, place sculptures or create installations throughout the 140 acres of the Putnam farm’s rolling hills. Expect to be greeted by artists and cows, who will hang around just to let you know it’s a real farm.. Open daily from dusk to dawn until October 31, Visitors are given a map with artwork locations and recommended walking paths upon entry. A Mid-Run Reception will take place on Saturday, September

Jacob burns Film center expands and renovates

Construction has begun at Jacob Burns Film Center (JBFC) to expand and renovate its facilities within the existing footprint of the current building. The organization will be adding two new theaters on the third floor of its cinema com-plex, which will add 80 new seats. The project will allow JBFC to further execute its mission to host “vital new films from around the world, as well as innovative pro-grams,” according to Programming Director Brian Ackerman. The Center will also reconfigure its Jane Peck Gallery into a café and community gathering space and replace the original seating in its three existing theaters. JBFC will remain open during construction, which is expected to be completed by fall 2015.

YMCA of Central and Northern Westchester, the College of Westchester and the White Plains YMCA have partnered to display award-winning student artwork at the YMCA’s White Plains branch. All three art-ists – Michelle Cores, Sharnice Mickens and Mecca Alim – are College of Westchester Digital Media graduates and recipients of the College of Westchester Scholarship Fund. The artwork and illustrations will be dis-played indefinitely as the work of more students is added in the future. concept of hope explored in Visions: Art of the MindFrom September 12-18, ArtsWestchester will present Visions 2014: Art of the Mind, an exhibition featuring the work of more than 150 original creations by more than 70 artists who are recipients of mental health services in Westchester County. The exhibition clearly demonstrates that these recipients have embraced the concept of hope and are will-ing to share their views of recovery. This exhibition is a partnership with Rockland Psychiatric Center and is made possible with funding from Westchester County Department of Community Mental Health and New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Westchester Division. Franco-American Fiddler performs in White plainsOn September 12, Franco-American fiddler Daniel Boucher will perform in ArtsWestchester’s Peckham Gallery as part of the orga-nization’s rich Folk Arts program. Boucher's music celebrates the life of the rich Franco American tradition of his ancestors. He has been widely recognized by organi-zations such as the American Folklife Center of the Library of Congress and the Kennedy Center. At ArtsWestchester, this acclaimed master of the

Quebecois fiddle tradition will be joined by a quartet as well as by contra dance instructor Bill Fischer. Boucher often provides an interactive experi-ence in his performances, encouraging audience members to participate in dancing and call-and-response singing. This event is presented in asso-ciation with Alliance Francaise of Westchester and is made possible with support from New York State Council for the Arts, a state agency. Approaching a milestone 50th anni-versary next year, ArtsWestchester invites area companies to join its anni-versary celebration by starting an Arts & Business Partnership program. ArtsWestchester offers a diverse menu of partnership ideas for businesses to support the arts while promoting their companies. A partnership highlighted:A new Arts & Business Partnership between BNY Mellon Wealth Management and ArtsWestchester will bring contemporary works on paper from a private collection to Westchester in a free exhibition this October. Drawing Line into Form: Works on Paper by Sculptors from the BNY Mellon Collection will be presented at ArtsWestchester’s downtown White Plains gallery in this unique partnership. The exhibition will offer the public a rare glimpse into a significant collection featuring 69 works by some of the art world’s most recognizable artists. Sol Lewitt, Mark di Suvero, Sarah Sze, Louise Bourgeois, William Kentridge, Henry Moore, and Robert Smithson are among the 59 celebrated contemporary artists that will be showcased in ArtsWestchester’s fall exhibition. “Assembling this collection has been a journey of discovery,” says Curator Brian J. Lang. “Each work of art offers a new perspective and opens a new window into the mind of its creator.”

The oldest financial institution in the United States, BNY Mellon has a strong history of supporting the arts in all of their forms. When Modern Was Contemporary: The Roy R. Neuberger Collection

The Neuberger Museum of Art (NMA)’s current exhibi-tion, When Modern Was Contemporary, provides a unique insight into the development of modern art in the United States. The show chronicles the pri-vate collection of the museum’s namesake, Roy R. Neuberger. Amassed mainly between the end of World War I and the start of the Cold War, the works remain among the finest per-sonal art collections in a public institution in the United States.

The 850-object collection, on view through December 25, is the foundation of the museum and highlights the extraordinary work of Edward Hopper, Georgia O’Keeffe, Jackson Pollock, and Mark Rothko, among many others. 'Untitled" paper sculpture by Irving Harper

Professionally, the mid-century Modernist designer Irving Harper created some of Herman Miller’s most iconic furniture pieces. His per-sonal work, however, includes hundreds of paper sculptures that Harper has never before allowed out of his Rye home. With an emphasis on sim-plicity and clean lines, the architectural masks and figures are made with simple tools – paper and Elmers glue – yet are extraordinarily imagi-native and detailed. Now, more than 50 years of personal works will be debuted for the first time in Rye Art Center (RAC)’s Irving Harper: A Mid-Century Mind At Play exhibition, on view from September 14 through November 8. Film sheds Light on the healing power of Dance

On September 15, the Steffi Nossen School of Dance and Music Conservatory of Westchester will present the Westchester pre-miere of Musical Chairs, a film about the healing powers of dance. Directed by award-winning

filmmaker Susan Seidelman, and produced by Westchester resident Janet Carrus, the romantic film follows a former dance instructor recently disabled in a car accident, and her determination to dance again. The screening will take place in the Music Conservatory’s Stadther Recital Hall in White Plains. Proceeds will benefit both the Moving Wheels & Heels adaptive dance program at Steffi Nossen School of Dance and the Music Therapy Institute of the Music Conservatory of Westchester. Arts festivals flourish this fall season as the air begins to cool, the leaves turn crimson and gold, and apple cider warms our souls. Westchester residents can enjoy one-of-a-kind works of art, family activities and craft demonstrations. the following fall arts festivals start the season off right.

crafts at Lyndhurstseptember 12-14, tarrytown

Celebrating its 30th anni-versary, Crafts at Lyndhurst offers a combination of new work and the imaginative trea-sures we’ve come to expect from its veteran artists. More than 275 artists and crafts-people will display their con-temporary American-made work in a festive setting of live music and craft demon-strations. Guests can browse the artwork, which includes pottery, hand-blown glass, jewelry and quilts; participate in a Shibumi silk scarf-making workshop; and wander the picturesque sculpture garden. Children-friendly activities include face painting, storytelling and stilt walkers. Arts on thirdseptember 14, mount Vernon

The City of Mount Vernon kicks off its 13th annual Arts on Third festival on September 14. Visitors can enjoy food from two inter-national food courts while basking in the entertain-ment on any of three stages. Headlining the festival’s entertainment will be hip-hop legend Doug E. Fresh. Also featured are jazz icon Tito Puente, Jr. and 70s soul trio Ray, Goodman and Brown. Taking over six full blocks of entertainment, the festival also features acrylic paint classes and work from local fine art-ists in its “Artists Row” area and family-friendly activities in the “Children’s Lane” area. Yonkers riverFest september 6, Yonkers

A full day of outdoor fes-tivities are highlighted at this 22nd annual Yonkers Downtown Waterfront event. Five stages of live music feature Grammy-winning children’s perform-ing sensation Dan Zanes, as well as Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Felix Cavalier of The Rascals. Education is at the forefront of goings-on, with a book swap for children and environmental activities. Other family-appropriate highlights include an outdoor artist

Armonk Outdoor Art showseptember 20-21, Armonk

For the 53rd year, Armonk Outdoor Art Show continues its long tradition of show-casing a fresh and diverse selection of art. Sponsored by Friends of North Castle Public Library, the annual show offers works from 185 juried artists – 55 of whom are new to the show. A wide array of media will be fea-tured, from printmaking to photography and digital art to wearable art. Personal shop-pers will provide decorating assistance. A veritable feast for the eyes and taste buds, the Southern Westchester (SoWe) Food and Wine Festival features three days of tastings, demonstrations and enter-tainment in multiple loca-tions throughout southern Westchester. The festival will spotlight hundreds of local chefs, restaurants and bakeries, as well as more than 300 winning wines and craft beers. While enjoying live music, guests will taste gourmet food samplings and cooking demonstrations from the Culinary Institute of America. A celebrity “Chef Battle,” including Rocco DiSpirito and Dave DiBari, will kick off the festivities.

Fall Festival at caramoor september 19-21, Katonah

For its Fall Festival, Caramoor experiments with brave collaborations on its stages. Banjo virtuoso Béla Fleck lends an element of bluegrass to the inventive string quartet Brooklyn Rider. The symphonic group The Knights will play two shows – one with jazz saxophonist Joshua Redman and his quartet, the second with classical violinist Gil Shaham. The latter pairing will also play a children-focused mid-day concert to help introduce youth to the world of music. Guests can spend the day on Caramoor’s grounds and discover its sound-art exhibition, In the Garden of Sonic Delights, or take a tour of the historic Rosen House. A festival weekend pass offers a discounted rate for those who want to attend multiple shows. For those who can’t witness these performances first-hand, a partnership with WQXR will broadcast the concerts live on WQXR (105.9FM) and WQXW (90.3), and online at www.wqxr.org.

ArtsFest offers two full days of free cultural programming as local establish-ments and galleries throughout New Rochelle and Pelham present a full menu of arts events and activities. Organized by the New Rochelle Council on the Arts, the exhibitions, workshops and family-friendly activities will give visi-tors and residents a taste for the cities’ cultural and artistic diversity. Iona college council on the Arts offers special ArtsFest hours for its current exhibition, Sacred Silence: The Practice of Iconography, by opening its doors on September 27 from 10am-5pm.

New rochelle public Library showcases the 99th annual juried exhibition of the New Rochelle Art Association. A reception will take place on Saturday night, including live music from South American jazz fusion group Emilio Teubal Trio.

pelham Art center hosts a Hot Metal Pour workshop and a performance by Westchester Harp Ensemble, both on Saturday. Three visual art displays will be on view: Natural Enemies, in the gallery; Stuffscapes, in the courtyard; and Outside-In, part of its "Storefront Project."

songcatchers present an intergenerational concert with singers from the Hugh A. Doyle Center and Garito Manor, accompanied by instrumentalists from the Songcatchers after school music program.

The Center for the Digital Arts of Westchester Community College

recently celebrated 20 years of innovation and service to Westchester

and Putnam Counties. It is an example of arts technology integration

in higher education creating access to digital arts education in the

21st Century. The Center supports five industry-grade post-production

studios that offer a full-range of robust computer graphics including:

2D/3D animation, digital filmmaking, game design, digital imaging,

web design, and e-publishing. In addition, it offers prosumer production

equipment and fine arts space. The Center for the Digital Arts also

offers student services, General Education courses, ESL, and noncredit

courses for students from 7 to 70+ years of age.
