John McDonald

John McDonald is best known as the art critic of the Sydney Morning Herald. He is a former Head of Australian Art at the National Gallery of Australia, a busy lecturer, and author of several books, most notably, Art of Australia: From Exploration to Federation, the first in a projected three volume history of Australian art. John has a longstanding interest in contemporary art. Last year he wrote the bulk of the catalogue for the White Rabbit Gallery, a new private museum of contemporary Chinese art.

Enjoy an in-depth look at traditional, modern and contemporary art, sculpture, design and architecture in the Nordic capitals of Copenhagen, Aarhus, Oslo and Reykjavik. In Denmark, highlights include the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek, ARKEN Museum of Modern Art, the Ordrupgaard Collection, the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art and Sculpture by the Sea in Aarhus.

In Norway, see Oslo’s new Opera House, the Renzo Piano-designed Astrup Fearnley Museum of Modern Art, Vigeland Sculpture Park and, of course, the Munch Museum.

Finish with five days exploring the scenic and natural wonders of Iceland, plus its flourishing contemporary art scene.

Sea Pink, Marc Moser, Sculpture by the Sea 2011, Aarhus

Sculpture by the SeaThe story of Sculpture by the Sea, Aarhus started on Bondi Beach in 2000. Here, Their Royal Highnesses Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary experienced Sculpture by the Sea. The young couple were fascinated by the splendid interplay between art and the surrounding natural environment, as well as by the visitors, who from early morning to late evening, came in droves to experience the sculptures. Crown Prince Frederik’s enthusiasm persuaded him to turn to the director of ARoS, Jens Erik Sørensen, in order to bring this popular Australian art event to Aarhus. The idea received the full backing of the Mayor of Aarhus, Nicolai Wammen, and Sculpture by the Sea, Aarhus was launched in 2009.

With approximately 500,000 visitors over a period of 4 weeks, Sculpture by the Sea, Aarhus is a fantastic success, embraced by the Danes and many international tourists visiting Denmark. 2013 will see the third Danish Sculpture by the Sea exhibition.

Established in 1884 and dedicated mainly to Iceland art from the 19th and 20th centuries, with works by Ásgrímur Jónsson, Jóhannes Kjarval and Nína Sæmundsson, the gallery is a wealth of resources on Icelandic art history, and gives a very interesting glimpse into the nation’s psyche. B L

Sun 16 June ReykjavikAfter a morning at leisure, the afternoon is devoted to Reykjavik’s modern art museums, starting with the Harbour House, located in the former warehouses of the port of Reykjavik. The museum has diverse exhibitions of contemporary and experimental art, and also houses the works of Erró, an Icelandic-born artist who was based in Paris and best known for his large-scale comic-book-styled

dreamscapes and montages. Continue with some contemporary visual art at the Living Art Museum – commonly known as Nylo. Finish with a tour of the museum dedicated to Einar Jónsson – a groundbreaking figure in Icelandic sculpture, who considerably influenced the visual arts in Iceland. His sculptures draw on myths and folklore, and have been described as emotive and even a little disturbing, in some cases. Regardless, his work is definitely masterly and a must-see. B

Mon 17 June ReykjavikJourney out of Reykjavik for a full day tour known as the ‘Golden Circle’. Visit some of the most beautiful natural phenomena of Iceland, including the site of the ancient parliament at Thingvellir National Park, the impressive waterfall at Gullfoss and the original Geysir and nearby Strokkur, which hurls boiling water to heights of up to 20 metres once every 5 minutes. Fri 21 June Arrive AustraliaEarly morning arrival in Australia.

Iceland’s Art SceneArt in Iceland is as young as it is exciting. Considering the fact that Icelandic culture is strongly oriented toward language, the visual arts did not begin developing until the early 20th century. This situation, which is remarkable for a Western country, may explain the unique nature of the contemporary art scene in Iceland. Even though international conceptual art continues to exercise a considerable influence and globalisation is affecting this island in the North Atlantic, Icelandic art is nevertheless marked by a very specific creative energy and the pleasure of experimentation, and it has produced a large number of outstanding artists.

Contemporary art in Iceland is often based on a playful attitude towards tradition and the absurdity of being situated halfway between western culture and a striking nature, which is perfectly otherwise than anything found in the rest of Europe. Icelandic artists get their inspiration from the power of the nature and the energy of the country, as well as its supernatural inhabitants like elves and trolls. The conflict of fire and ice are powerful opposites, as well as the vast fields of sand, lava and the great ice-caps.

The Sigurjón Ólafsson Museum (1908-1982) features a large collection of the artist’s sketches, drawings and sculptures.

After lunch, see the greatest treasures of the Icelandic nation at the National Museum of Iceland, which provides a comprehensive picture of the past 1,200 years of Iceland’s cultural history, from the settlement to the present day. Finally, enjoy a guided tour of the National Gallery of Iceland.

Even though international conceptual art continues to exercise a considerable influence and globalisation is aecting this island in the North Atlantic, Icelandic art is nevertheless marked by a very specific creative energy and the pleasure of experimentation, and it has produced a large number of outstanding artists.
