New AWoL Mentorship:Emerging Artist Jackson Gillies
& Mentor, Chris JudgeWhen Jackson Gillies and Chris Judge met for the first time with AWoL Director,Julie McLeod, to discuss a mentorship she said, "I was in Seventh Heaven listeningto them talk about music, sing and play guitar together."
Jackson won the title of Teen Star USAearlier this year. At the competition,he performed a blues song, "The Sky IsCrying," by Elmore James, thenstunned the panelists with his renditionof "Nessun Dorma," Puccini's Aria from"Turandot" as one of four finalists.
Jackson performed at the Art CareerDay Conference, in April, where helearned about the AWoL Programand expressed interest. Jackson goalsfor the mentorship are "to be inspired,guided and prepared to realize mydreams. I want to improve my guitarand music skills and stage presence."
After an in depth search for the musician to mentor Jackson, AWoL approachedChris Judge. Chris has recorded several CDs with the internationally recognizedgroup, The Transylvanian Mountain Boys, and played on many CDs by prominentlocal artists such as Téka and Luis Muñoz. He also has his own classically inspiredsolo guitar CD featuring works by Tárrega, Leo Brouwer, Manuel M. Ponce, AgustínBarrios and others. He has written music scores for documentary films such as"Playing with Fire," about the ceramicist, Paul Soldner, and performed with the SBSymphony, SB Grand Opera, SB Oratorio Chorale, SB Civic Light Opera, SBCCTheater Group and SBCC Monday Madness big band. He began playing guitar atan early age and has degrees in Music and Spanish literature from UCSB. He alsostudied guitar at the Real Conservatorio Superior de Música de Madrid and withthe great jazz guitarist, Ted Greene.
MENTORSHIPS...Emerging Artists and Mentors create their own unique goals and schedule, workingoneonone for up to a year, in the Art Without Limits' MentorshipProgram. Emerging artists are chosen because they are extremely talented, havestudied their art form, are dedicated and ready to turn their passion into aprofessional career. Thoughtful consideration goes into selecting the best Mentorfor the Emerging Artist. There is no charge to Emerging Artists, however they areexpected to give back to their Mentor, to AWoL, and to pass on the gift ofmentorship to the new generation of artists. We believe that Giving Begets Giving.

Since it's inception, Art Without Limits has provided over 50 artists and art groups with fiscalsponsorship, allowing them to gain access to grants and other tax-deductible donations for theirprojects under AWoL's 501(c)(3) nonprofit status.
Julie will lead a BIZARTS workshop on Fiscal Sponsorship on Tuesday, September 13from 5-7pm at Rabobank Milpas, 914 Carpinteria St...lotsa parking! She has over 15 yearsexperience with Fiscal Sponsorships. Basically, funders all need to donate to a nonprofit totake a tax deduction. Art Without Limits will receive your donations once you qualify, takea small percent, and re-grant the funds to you directly. She will go over the applicationprocess and what the rules of the game are.
AWoL is delighted to have sponsored such groups as Everybody Dance Now!, Girls Rock!,and Library Dances, who have gone on to receive their own 501(c)(3) status, and be
sponsoring talented artists, such as Sol Hill, Derrick Curtis Productions, Cybil Gilbertson's"Nectar", Stage Left Productions and Vanessa Vân-Ánh Võ.
