1ST EDITION 2011 • 11–12 • N. 04.BI-MONTHLY GALLERY GUIDE IN THE CEE REGION • RADAR – PUBLIC BENEFIT ASSOCIATION FOR CONTEMPORARY EUROPEAN ART

Pravdoliub Ivanov is an internationally acclaimed Bulgarian artist who cre-

ates installations, objects and photographs. In his work he uses ready-

mades and known objects, transforming them into paradoxical arrange-

ments or illogical situations and thereby throwing outside of the frame

their intended function. His art stretches between an object, its function,

name and social context, exploring the boundaries of visual representa-

tion, relation of language to image, questioning the automatism of cog-

nition. The artist’s works, although rooted in the conceptual tradition of

art, are mostly sophisticated and formally refined spacial realisations. His

art has a critical character, often tongue in a cheek, and, following in the

footsteps of today’s politicians, in

the place of truth Pravdoliub Ivanov

proposes a half-truth.

The works of Pravdoliub Ivanov

have been shown at, among oth-

ers, the Venice Biennale, the Berlin

Biennale, the Istanbul Biennial, the

Manifesta in Ljubljana, the Biennale

of Sydney and the Tirana Biennale.

The artist also participated in two

great presentations, already con-

sidered historical, of the art from

the Balkan Peninsula that drew a

map of artistic phenomena in this

region after the turbulent changes

on the plane of the political system,

namely the “Blut & Honig – Zuku-

nft ist am Balkan” in Essl Collec-

tion in Vienna, curated by Harald

Szeemann, and the “In the Gorges

of the Balkans” in the Museum

Fridericianum in Kassel, curated by

René Block. The works of the artist

can be found, among others, in the

midst of the collections of the ER-

STE Bank in Austria, the European

Investment Bank in Luxembourg

and the European Patent Office in

Munich, as well as in the private col-

lections of René Block in Berlin, Ur-

sula Krinzinger in Vienna and Nedko

Solakov in Sofia. Pravdoliub’s works

have been widely reproduced in

magazines such as “Frieze”, “Flash

Art” and “Kunstforum”, etc., as well

as in publications such as “East Art

Map”.

INSECTA

Physiognomy of tiny insects has been

the subject of research for the sculp-

years. Through continuous construc-

tion of a pure expression sculpture

his first solo exhibition of ’insectlike’

creatures was created, reduced in the

it the sculptor clearly shows his com-

an author.

Title: Whale Has Heart Big As Size Of

A Car

Text:Collective art project of David

Böhm and Alena Kotzmannová brings

together an installation in which texts

of David and photographic pictures

of Alena unfold our associations with

such a freedom, that it is hard to dif-

ferentiate the text and visual precep-

tion. Texts are appearing in form of

signs, objects, installations. Texts and

groupe of photographs are not meant

for linear reading, they create rather a

specific space, where the bindings are

not always obvious.

Lies and Layers: Jan Šerých + Esther

Stocker

This collaborative project by the

Prague-based artist Jan Serych and

the Vienna-based artist Esther Stock-

er was created specifically for the gal-

lery space at hunt kastner. Both artists

make use of geometric abstract forms

and monochrome colors, while cod-

ing or camouflaging messages in their

work which test the perceptual facul-

ties of the viewers. Stocker is perhaps

best known for her space installations

which expand from the canvas and in-

vade into the exhibition space becom-

ing full sensory installations. Serych

works in the mediums of painting,

photography and – in this exhibition

- video, creating conceptual trompe-

l’oeils, as he struggles to rationalize

the irrational in both art and life.

Michał Budny

11. 11. 2011 - 7. 1. 2012

Michał Budny’s minimal interventions

and his inconspicuous and subtle in-

stallations form a distinct counterpoint

to spectacular art. Budny studied

sculpture for one year only; afterwards

he depended on his own instinct. Early

on his specific signature took the form

of sophisticated paper objects. Budny

created his own poetic and selfreflec-

tive „cardboard language” into which

he translated everyday objects (let-

ters, maps) or architecture.

Jakub Špaňhel is a painter of the vis-

ible world, tangible objects, creating

series of paintings depicting flow-

ers, nudes, flowerpots, crosses, beer

glasses, goats, lamps, architecture…

His work deals with themes that seem

quotidian, but which in his hands are

transformed into dream-like, magi-

cal or even ritualistic painting. This

emotional effect is supported by his

characteristic means of expression:

large or even monumental formats,

ecstatic brushwork, dark, almost

monochrome colour schemes, often

bearing the traces of wildly sprayed

radiant pigments (gold, copper, …),

the content simplified and reduced to

mere hints. Jakub Špaňhel also works

in smaller formats, especially graphic

pieces and work with mechanic roller

techniques

Water

December 2 – December 23, 2011

His exhibition entitled Water will fea-

ture three new sculptures, each of

which is related to water, both as ma-

terial and medium. The three works

– one of which was realized in co-

operation with Anett Lilla Hegedűs

– are manifestations of three differ-

ent problematics both in a sculptural

sense and as relating to the theme.

Water is present at the exhibition as

material – a constituting element of

one of the sculptures – and also in

correspondence with immateriality,

intangibility, origin and ephemerality.

Beyond direct references, its multifac-

eted symbology adds new layers of

meaning to the works, and the exhibi-

tion as a whole.

Artists exhibited: Ákos Bánki, Áron

On view: 8th of november 2011 – 7th of

January 2012.

Instead of offering a historical reflec-

tion, the exhibition presents those

current trends in Hungarian con-

temporary art that rely on the ab-

stract traditions. The gallery seeks

to revitalize, and act as a perma-

nent representative of, abstraction,

which seems to be neglected in the

contemporary discourse. In the first

half of the year, the gallery focuses

on geometric art, while in the second

half, including the last show of 2011,

we will concentrate on the other im-

portant trend, lyrical and expressive

abstraction. While the theme of the

exhibit is provided by young art-

ists, we also consider it important to

present the current work of the gen-

eration that precedes them.

ASTEROID

Exhibition of HENRIK MARTIN

November 23 – January 20., 2012

Curator: Brigitta Muladi, art historian

In Henrik Martin’s second solo exhi-

bition we can see his selected works

of years, inspired by asteroids, in ad-

dition to a few extraterrestrial „faces”

whose origin, that is, whether they got

from Earth to Space or from Space to

Earth, is unknown.

His paintings, statues and installations

invite us to an imaginary space travel,

although displaying carved, painted

and installed objects made from the

materials of Earth, still, some of them

bear a striking resemblance with the

Trojan asteroids, for example.

ANDRÁS ERNSZT HIDDEN ORDER

On show: 24. November 24 – 13 Janu-

ary 2012

Hidden order shows at first glance

abstract paintings, however one can

fast realise that the majority of the

paintings’ motives originate in nature.

At the same time, order, structural

layers and spatial illusion have always

characterised András Ernszt’s oeuvre.

His main themes are the richly diverse

and seemingly haphazard but in every

minute regularly ordered phenomena

of plants (grass, leaves) and the rela-

tions between these elements and our

senses.

Cleve Backster observed the reac-

through a polygraph, and received

incredible results. Professor Hashi-

with the aid of his wife, which could

into sound. Therefore nothing could

prevent them from teaching their fa-

Multiple Russian experiments proved

that cabbages are capable of identify-

The Bank is a photographic installa-

stands as a metaphor of wealth, and

more generally, all material things.

Metaphorically, the Bank is an attempt

at tackling the finiteness and illusory

character of all material things. Once

all doors have been opened, the view-

er may well realise that there really is

nothing to be found.

Pravdoliub Ivanov. Half-truth

18.11.2011- 12.1.2012

Pravdoliub Ivanov is an internationally

acclaimed Bulgarian artist who creates

installations, objects and photographs.

In his work he uses ready-mades and

known objects, transforming them

into paradoxical arrangements or il-

logical situations and thereby throw-

ing outside of the frame their intend-

ed function. The works of Pravdoliub

Ivanov have been shown at, among

others, the Venice Biennale, the Ber-

lin Biennale, the Istanbul Biennial, the

Manifesta in Ljubljana, the Biennale of

Sydney and the Tirana Biennale. At

the exhibition at the Le Guern Gallery

will be shown the most recent works

of the artist.

Video, installation

Exhibition open until 13. 01. 2012,

Wednesday – Friday 16:00 – 19:00 or

upon telephone arrangement.

LOKAL30 presents works by Oscar

Guermouche, Elin Magnusson, NUG,

Anna Odell – Stockholm’s Konstfack-

grown “scandalists”, who have out-

raged the Swedish public opinion.

They tap into manifold, sometimes

radical strategies, and varied media to

lay bare double social standards, map

the gap between ideological theory

and everyday practice, challenge the

welfare state, or take skeletons out of

the historical closet. (curator: Martin

Schibli – Kalmar konstmuseum)

Shabelnikov’s Bible

Yury Shabelnikov is an artist with ac-

tuality coursing through his veins. This

means that he does not paint pretty,

eye-catching pictures or create spir-

itually uplifting masterpieces. He im-

plements projects. And works with a

brush, and sculpts from marble, and

makes installations from objects... Yet

the concept always remains the most

important part.

EXHIBIT “RENDER”

ANDREY GORBUNOV

17 November 2011 – 10 January 2012

Andrey Gorbunov is continuing the

search for a realistic visual language.

He develops images that illustrate

several themes and topics that run

through his art. They may be unap-

pealing to certain viewers, since Gor-

bunov uses anatomical motifs in his

pictures. His canvases are memora-

ble as painstakingly drawn with the

pink puffiness, appendages, and

pieces of internal organs that are

familiar to us from the anatomy text-

books of our schooldays. obsessive

concentration.

See Me

Vladimir Tatarevic

Exhibition runs November 10 -28 2011

…one more exhibition of photographs

and one more surprise by Vladimir

Tatarević. Contrary to the previous

two exhibitions Spartans and Vestal

Virgins where he presented the per-

fection of his photographic skills and

brilliance in the technical execution

of black and white and color pho-

tography, this time he has surprised

us by his clear intention to show the

moment of “decision” when shooting

photographs of his models

Opposite

Gordana Kaljalovic/Djordje Odanovic

Exhibition runs

December 1 - 19. 2011

To be or to communicate is the im-

perative of the moment. There are

numerous ways in which a person

can communicate and express one’s

need for closeness. New times bring

new types and models of commu-

nication, tossing out the old ones

to historical debris. A group of dis-

carded mail boxes are an immediate

cause for the project Opposite, sym-

bolizing outmoded forms of human

correspondence and exchange of

messages.

spot on: Portraits

Sébastien de Ganay

The exhibition runs from December

7,2011until February 11, 2012.

In his first solo show at the Gandy Gal-

lery in Bratislava,Sébastien de Ganay

a French artist who lives and works

in Bad Deutsch-Altenburg,Austria,pr

esents a new series of portraits. Well

established already for his „dot paint-

ings” and „dot writings”, this French

artist has beckoned his masters and

his friends. The technique of this new

photo production upon felt follows

that of his dot paintings – the white

gesso background enhancing inform-

ative areas.Now the split between

these latter and their cottonish-white

surroundings suggests a full-on re-

flection upon an essential face to face

that of which emptiness, and the con-

creteness of Image vs its absence is

absolute.

space (8850m vertical)

Eva Beierheimer, Daniela Krajčová,

Miriam Laussegger, Rastislav Podoba,

Peter Wehinger

The exhibition lasts until 13.1.2012

The exhibition space (8850 vertical)

is a selection of Slovak and Austrian

authors. Their common denominator

is the interest in the phenomenon of

space, its understanding and trans-

formation in the media of drawing,

video, installation and object. The ex-

ploration of “physically perceptible”

space correlations in a concrete time

and place and their media transfer,

or if you like the visualisation of this

transformation. The results are forma-

tions carrying traces of abstracting of

space, space objects, horizontal and

vertical distances.

Ghosts of Lyvadia. Volodymyr Gulich

22 November 2011 – 7 December 2011

painting

Series of works „Ghosts of Livadia”

of Vladimir Gulich is an ironic pop-art

projection based on Crimean images

and impressions. Artist from Zaporo-

zhye „closes” the geography of pop-

art in Ukraine from the southeast

border. Gulich „plays” with the resort

specifics of Crimea just like the group

PopTrance (Saller, Kharabaruk, Matvi-

enko) use brand images of the west-

ern Ukraine.

Figures on white. Nikita Kadan

9 December 2011 – 26 December 2011

Painting, graphics, instalation

A short scene from the film by Alex-

ander Dovzhenko „Shchors” formed a

basis of “Figures on white”: Red Army

striking at yet unseen enemy, crosses

the empty snow-covered field. In

paintings and graphic works, dis-

played at the exhibition, the white field

becomes a symbol of transition state,

timelessness, and hovering. On this

field, one after another, crowds, police

barriers, riots participants, the people

idly spending time on the square ap-

pear. Ukraine, its two post-Soviet dec-

ades, is the prolonged intersection of

the white field with a half-forgotten

„where from” and unclear „where to”.

Artists Draw. A4, ball-point pen

28 December 2011 – 28 January 2012

graphics

Imagine the situation if Marcel Proust

or Leo Tolstoy had twitter, they would

not probably had any idea to create

their huge masterpieces. Therefore,

their works would be expressed only

in one word or single mark, and still

would they be treated as genius?
