Friends of Polk County Arts,

Over the past few years, the Arts in Polk County have prospered and are

seeming to grow so quickly. A good part of our success and growth over this

time results from the hard work and dedication of Dan Stetson, ExecutiveDirector of the Polk Museum of Art. As you may know Dan has been provided an opportunity

to lead one of the premier museums of American history in the eastern United States, The

Hunter Museum in Chattanooga, TN. While working at the Polk Museum of Art, Dan has not

only developed the reputation of the museum as we know it today, but has also served as a

leader, mentor, and front man for all of the Arts in Polk County. Dan’s commitment to the

arts in Polk County has been unwavering. Many of the leaders of other arts organizations

throughout Polk County have benetted from Dan’s leadership and guidance. He will be

missed. As we wrap up Dan’s last Mayfaire Arts Festival (the 40th Annual) we can look

forward to seeing his work with Mayfaire continue to grow well into the future. At the same

time cultural arts organizations from throughout Polk County are turning their attention to

the rst “Heart of the Arts Festival” coming this October in conjunction with the Americansfor the Arts national Arts and Humanities month. This month-long celebration of the arts will

provide Polk County arts organizations a platform to showcase the great arts experiences we

have in our county while uniting the message that Polk County can be the destination for the

arts experience. I’m hoping everyone will seize this new opportunity to collaborate and unite

the message in order to provide exposure to families, friends, and visitors during the month of

October. We have much to be proud of in regards to the Arts in Polk, let’s show the world we

are willing to share. How can you get involved? Patronize the arts; check out a museum, take

in the symphony, join and support one of our county’s many arts organizations, talk to your

leaders and businesses in support of the arts. The Cultural Arts is the building block for our

Quality-of-Life and community sustainability. We are celebrating the 150th Anniversary of

Polk County; what would we look like or have to offer without our CulturalArt assets? Polk County is blessed to have a great collection of Arts

opportunities, historic heritage, architecture, venues and talent

and it is up to us to keep them viable, on-going and strong.

Florida Dance Theatre Receives FundingThrough The George W. Jenkins Fund

Florida Dance Theatre is excited to announce funding by George W. Jenkins Fund from within theCommunity Foundation of Greater Lakeland for their “Dance Extension 2” program.

The program begins with three, one-week camps held between July 11th and July 29th, 2011, allowing for60 underserved children, ages 6 through 10, to attend per week. Children will participate in ballet, jazz, hip hop and various cultural dance classes along with musical theatre, acting and art. All classes

are taught by seasoned professionals from the ranks of the faculty of Florida Dance Theatre and otherarea professionals.

So many children are never given the opportunity to experience the art of dance. The camp allowschildren interested in dance to explore their own abilities and understand the discipline, dedication, and physicality necessary. Students can attend one of three one-week workshops which meet Mondaythrough Friday from 9am – 5pm. At the end of each week on Friday evening, a short performance heldat the Academy studios showcases the students’ newfound knowledge and experience. Enthusiasticcomments from families and friends helped us realize the importance of this program. The students notonly have fun, but also gain feelings of accomplishment, while enhancing their condence.

During each camp session, students will be closely observed and reviewed by the faculty in the areas ofenthusiasm, interest, dedication, social skills and ability. At the end of the 3 weeks, 30 students will bechosen and given the opportunity to attend the professional training academy of Florida Dance Theatrefor the entire nine-month season, August 22, 2011 through May 2012. They attend 2 classes per week, ballet and another technique of their choice, and also are provided with the necessary dancewear and

shoes and costumes needed for the end of the season performance. They will also have the opportunity to audition for Florida DanceTheatre’s annual “Nutcracker” held at the Polk Theatre in December.

For more information please email us at [email protected].

It has been a very busy springbeginning with the Polk Arts Alliance’s5th Annual Race for the Arts. It wasa success with special thanks to the

Lakeland Runners Club, our Race Chair,Commissioner Bob English, and withthe help and MC of Commissioner Mel-ony Bell. The weather was perfect anda beautiful weekend for theBloomin’ Arts Festival.

Congratulations to our boardmember Cindy Hartley Ross whoreceived the 2010 Art Advocate Awardfrom NAWBO and has been appointed

to the State Commission on the Status of Women. I wasfortunate enough to ride up to the Capitol with Cindy toattend Arts Day in Tallahassee in March. It was a very busyseveral days and we accomplished a lot. I was privilegedto attend a reception (thanks to Cindy) at the Governor’s

mansion and Cindy (the never-tiring PAA advocate),introduced the Polk Arts Alliance, showcasing Artifactswith a brief conversation on the importance of the CreativeIndustries on job creation and our rich cultural assets inPolk County. We visited several of our legislators, ran into our County Commissioners at the capital and met withSenator Paula Dockery who was kind enough to have herpicture taken with us holding up Artifacts! Cindy evenmanaged to convince the VisitFlorida Welcome Center tocarry our Artifacts as we dropped off a box and copies. They loved it, and we were thrilled!

The following day I attended the Arts Day in Tallahasseemeeting of the Florida Cultural Alliance, Citizens for theArts in Florida and Division of Cultural Affairs presentationwith main speaker Secretary of State Kurt Browning. As

a long time advocate of the arts who had retired, Mr.Browning was asked to return by Governor Scott. KurtBrowning is a true advocate of the arts and we are thrilledto see him back. The meeting was much better attendedthan last year; Mr. Browning was positive and encouragingon the direction of funding for the arts and working to helpgain support and increase funding through advocacy andawareness. We have already seen improvements thislegislative session and we need to work hard to continue inthis direction. Stay tuned – I am in the process of requestinga day with Secretary Browning to come to Polk County toaddress the importance of the Cultural Arts Sector. Thiswould be an exciting day for us all.

As announced in the last issue, PAA and the CulturalArts Council are currently working with the expertise of the

Polk Ad Fed to launch the inaugural Polk County “Heart ofthe Arts Festival” that will take place the entire month ofOctober! SmartCreative has taken on the task of creatingthe logo and the brand (thank you, Fred); PAA is working onplans for marketing and advertising and partnering with ourchambers; the council is working hard to collaborate withthe events of the month and we are all working to makePolk County “The Destination for the Arts,” (that we alreadyknow it is).

So there you have it … much accomplished and muchto do. Gearing up for Polk County’s inaugural Heart of theArts Festival this summer will prove to be very busy, veryproductive and very exciting!

They don’tbelieve me.It’s when I tell them

more tickets are sold

to proessional theatre

events than the

totals o either the

National Football League

(17,282,225), the National

Basketball Association

(17,149,610) or theNational Hockey League

(16,985,310).

Surprised? Why not? See, live theatre is

supposed to appeal to a small, se-

lect group, right? Theatre is selective,

discerning and discriminating, yes?

Smaller audiences, noses in the air and

all that.

Uh-huh. That’s when I give

them the hard stu.

Let‘s open the can: 25 million theatre

tickets were sold in 2010 to Broadway

shows---13 million attended while on

Broadway and 12 million more when

they went on tour. Now, that sure beats

those o us who relish hockey sticks

and dunk shots, doesn’t it? (by the way,

that 25 million results in a combined

economic impact of over 3.35 billion

dollars-- more than the GNP of 50

countries).

Only Major league baseball dwars the

other three sports at 80,715,710 for

2010. That totals more than all other

sports and theatre, but then again, no

one actor gets paid 33 million dollars

a year (for the economically curious,

that would be Alex Rodriguez o the –

who else – New York Yankees) , and no

one theatre sells more seats than the

Phillies of Brotherly Love at 3,777,322,same year. And baseball even tops

NASCAR attendance at 75 million.

But remember, the 25 million theatre

tickets sold are from the for-prot

commercial theatre. We need to take a

road trip here to account or the many

regional theatres, the successul arm

teams. Theatres such as the Alley in

Houston, Asolo in Sarasota, Guthrie in

Minneapolis, Old Globe in San Diego,

Mark Taper in LA, Long Whar in New

Haven and the

Steppenwolf in Chicago

(recall Gary Sinise and

John Malkovich?). These

theatres saw over 31

million attendees.

Here in the hinterlands

we have the little

theatre movement,

the community-basedtheatres. Truly, we could

be called the “national

theatre.” Why? 7000

theatres and 86 million ticket buyers

at last count. 86 million people, hear

that? Add all those theatre attendance

gures and you have 142 million fans

watching the curtain go up rather than

Rodriguez’ salary.

Or maybe they watch both. I do.

So i you’re bold enough to add the

community tickets sold to make the

grand total of 142 million – and the

new total is quite grand – then what

could really be called the Great

American pastime? O all live events,

the leado hitter would be the

American theatre. Next up: baseball.

Just take me out to both ballgames.

 Norm Smal

Our next “ballgame” is EVITArunning July 22-August 7.

And she was known to throw many a curve ball….

GOODEN: PIXELS

July 8-Aug 5, 2011Reception: July 16, 2011 6:30-8:30

Ridge Art Association is proud to present the artwork of one amazing award winner. Pat Gooden’s

digital images have a basis in a painterly tradition, a tradition of art making built from her own

background in the study of composition, color theory and the handling of subjects. The exhibition

will include past award winners, pieces borrowed from Private Collections and new pieces created

just for this show, many available for sale.

Executive Director Christy Hemenway says “The artwork of Pat Gooden impressed me even

before I worked at Ridge Art and got to know her images well; she is one of the few artists that

stood out and grabbed me.”

From Pat’s artist’s statement: “Armed with a digital camera, I have become a collector of

images, not always knowing what the image will become once it is in the mainframe, but saving

it because something in it is visually worthwhile. The nal image develops through the process of

creativity and the intersection of these found visual elements. It is in the process of sorting and

layering these various images that my work develops. I don’t begin with a preconceived notion of

a statement or a direction. The images lead me as objects and images are added until the work

seems right.”

National Endowment Funds  Florida Dance Theatre Florida Dance Theatre is thrilled to receive a

$10,000 matching grant from the National Endow-ment for the Arts for its dance education program“The Healing Tears.” The program will be held atsix Polk County elementary schools and is designedfor third- through fth-graders. Every nine weeks

after-school sessions are held at two schools.During week one of each session, two after-schooldance classes are held for interested third- throughfth-grade students at each school. Twenty-ve

students from each school are chosen from thisgroup. Those students receive a basic ballet andmodern movement class for eight weeks and learnchoreography for the Healing Tears Ballet. At theend of the 8th week, these students will performalongside the professional company dancers atthe Polk Theatre in the contemporary balletperformance about the importance of therainforests.

The dance classes will teach basic techniqueand athleticism so the students are made awareof the importance of physical tness and how itpertains to their daily lives. The choreographic

portion of the program gives children insight intocreative expression. Throughout the process, students also learn about ecology, the rainforestsand their importance, and the animals and peoplethat call it home.

The students develop appreciation of theperforming arts and respect for themselves andothers through the discipline, dedication, andteamwork necessary to put on a production andlearning about personal talents and insightinto other forms of creative expression. Theperformance aspect of this project reaches

children who have limited access to the arts. Most of them have never seen or participated in alive performance. They experience a professionalproduction in a theatre and see their peers onstage.

This program helps fulll Florida Dance

Theatre’s mission of bringing the art of danceto the entire community through education, outreach, and entertainment. To learn moreabout this program or to make a tax deductiblecontribution contact: Florida Dance Theatre at863-802-0399 or [email protected]

The correlation between artistic design andfunctionality has always been a deningcharacteristic of decorative art. Polk Museumof Art will explore the relationship this summerin the new exhibition, “Form/Function:Decorative Arts From the Permanent Collection.”

The exhibition runs July 2 through September10 in the Museum’s main galleries.

Form vs. function is a major pivot point whendiscussing the differences between works thathave traditionally been deemed ne art andthose that are considered decorative art. This exhibition will take a closer look at thatrelationship through examples from thePermanent Collection. Decorative Art objectsfrom various cultures and time periods, fromGeorgian silver to Asian porcelain to Pre-Columbian ceramics, will be displayed. Each

artwork will be displayed according to how itsform relates to its intended function.

Will your artistic sensibilities persuade you toview these beautiful objects as being purelydecorative, or will you focus more on theirutilitarian characteristics?

The exhibition will be celebrated at a receptionfrom 6 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, August 26, at theMuseum. The event, which is free for membersand $10 for guests, will feature light horsd’oeuvres and a cash bar beginning at 7 p.m.

Polk Museum of Art in Lakeland is the only museumserving Polk County that is nationally accredited by

the American Association of Museums and is anAfliate of the Smithsonian Institution. The Museumis open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Sat-urday and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday. The Museum is closed

on Mondays and major holidays. The Museum ob-serves summer hours from July 1-August 31: open 10a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday and closed Sundays,

Mondays and major holidays. Admission is $5 foradults, $4 for seniors ages 62 and up, and FREE for
