Are images of fractals art Its up to each individual

to decide what they believe about that I would suggest that they are only partially artistic Some might say that a photo of a tree was artistic however the beauty in it has come from a natural process The photographer has used a combination of luck and skill in order to get the image the same is true of fractals

Unless youre inventing new formulas yourself its most fair to liken the process of generating fractal imagery to a kind of mathematical photography The subjects of the work are the formulas and its difficult to add any deeper message to a fractal work Certainly there is lots that you can control in terms of how the landscape is dressed and presented but most of the lay of the land is already defined by inescapable mathematical (or more generally computational) fact

I personally believe that the universe is here because of self-organization (or self-synthesis you could say) Fractals are tied to self-organization as the automatic processes of self-organization help to build linkage across scale levels that gives rise to self-similarity If we look into the natural world we see that self-organizing systems often do generate fractals Perhaps this scale-invariance is caused by the action of a central story - like a proto-self that governs self-generation spanning many scale levels

Perhaps we love looking at fractals because we feel related to them They resemble things within us and surrounding us - and they abstractly illustrate the primal story of imaginary things becoming real

I have been generating digital fractal images for many years - going back to a glorious day on which I un-deleted an archive of Fractint (an old DOS fractal program) from a floppy disk For some years now I have used a Windows application called UltraFractal I run it under the Linux operating system (using an emulation software called Wine) UltraFractal is essentially a photoshop-like layering and compositing software for fractals

Fractals are defined and colored by iterated transformations of complex numbers - in short - by formulas UltraFractal has a large diverse and actively developed formula collection

Ive done a very small amount of formula authoring not enough to say that Ive really mastered it besides my math is not strong enough to really do it properly I tend to focus my programming abilities elsewhere Ive written (in python) and released a little software tool called uprMash that manipulates UltraFractal UPR files (saved fractals) The idea behind uprMash is to explore motion-blur in fractals The concept that the virtual shutter could be left open while one of the fractal parameters is varied leading to a range of states being blended together It was quite refreshing to see fractals which didnt have everything perfectly in focus some nice results from uprMash can be seen on my Picasa galleries (httppicasawebgooglecomgdanzo)

The activity of the formula authors and the wider UltraFractal community is one of my inspirations Many excellent insights and fascinating new ideas suggestions and pointers from fellow fractal explorers have led me to delve into these beautiful bizarre intensely abstract fractal places I share credit with the community for bringing these images into reality for all to see

Another thing that spurs me on in creating these images is the satiation of a peculiar curiosity about the finer structures in an existing fractal image Zooming in resolving more detail the desire to find out what something looks like closer up Looking towards a literally-infinite micro-scale horizon

The use of fractal software in discovery manipulation and focusing to resolve certain features or textures in fractals is a thrill that is mostly reserved for the person using the fractal software (who you would normally call the artist) I agree with the Orbit-Trap bloggers about this at least A major part of the art-experience that happens to-do-with fractals is the actual experience of exploring The operator of the software IS the audience at least in part

The desire to share the beauty of the exploration experience for this universe of image synthesis is something that encourages me to take these photos along the way To let others see what I saw on the journey

I also explore fractals to discover unique aesthetic qualities There is occasionally the exciting possibility that one might be the first human to have discovered some of these places Indeed there is infinite variability in the shapes and textures in the vast universe of computationally definable images The kinds of infinity youre dealing with are way beyond astronomical and this is mind-boggling in a very pleasant way

INTRODUCTION TO SIGNS OF LIFE

My odyssey from landscape photographer to whatever I might be now is a story that while not

exceptional is instructive as to the creation of the works that are contained in this book

In March of 1999 after a month working in Italy supervising the printing of Eighteen Days in

June my monograph on the Djerassi Resident Artists Program I returned to face my frustration

in creating a new distinction in the well-worn tradition of Western Landscape photography

After twenty-five years in that tradition and three years working on the book I elected to take

another road trip to explore both inner and outer landscapes this time to the Southwest

On a stunningly clear night in the Arizona desert not far from the Mexican border my carefully

designed life was undone by a simple realization That my future would look like my past if I

continued to follow the path I was on

In that moment out of time I chose to cease my use of black and white film cameras and

lenses and as a means to simplify my creative vision computers as well Given the investment

I had made exploring landscape art I was surprised by my choice yet knew I was on the right

path when I awoke the following day as excited about life as I had been since I was a child In

my days wandering the desert that followed I had dreams in which I saw extraordinary visions

images of life itself

So here it begins again ten years later creating another book to share my art and the gift its

inspiration provides

has been the driving force of my work for as long as I can remember to

express those singular moments out of time when the wall between us and

the rest of the world dissolves

This ordinary thirst for a deeper connection to life drives extraordinary

behaviors Mystics fast mind-altering drugs are consumed property is

willfully surrendered rational thought is suspended and even life itself is

put at risk all for the promise of a taste of the divine

Ironically sometimes it is this very desire that keeps us separate from the

transcendent experience that we seek

In my work as a photographer I have gained a profound understanding of life

by being present to the world as it is without thought without

interpretation Indeed it seems that Presence the mind silent the heart

open is the sole requirement for the experience of beauty

My cameraless photographs are images created as an interpretation

and celebration of the design of being

In March 1999 I began to feel a need to explore the tools of my

medium beyond both their traditional and innovative uses as means to

advance self-expression In contrast to those artists who are turning to

technology for additional tools to achieve their own freedoms I

turned to simplicity mindful craftsmanship and the direct exposure of

photographic materials to exercise my own freedom of expression

Using neither camera nor lens my new technique has more in

common with Japanese ink brush painting and improvisational jazz

than it does with the current practices of photography Each delivery

of light like every brush stroke or note played is unrehearsed and

once released cannot be undone

The recognition that light in all its manifestations nourishes my life

allows me to accept the rigorous demands of this process of imaging

as an exercise in awakening Although the technique has no

relationship to those I have used previously the quality of the creative

experience is similar to that of photographing the landscape of my

beloved California

The imagery succeeds once I reach a point where my conscious

intention dissipates and is replaced by a sense of being a conduit for

the serendipitous dance Irsquove imagined between the subject of the piece

and the spirit of its expression This shift creates a perilous condition

moving me into a world that is unfamiliar and full of risk but vibrant

and full of possibility

With this work I am pursuing something that I cannot define

anticipate or manipulate into existence In surrendering to the dance

of art I see my life and my work as parts of that design of being

which I seek to understand

meanings and symbolsO u r t h i n k i n g i s n a t u r a l l y metaphorical within the limits of our existing cultural medium The artist transfers a metaphor from the linguistic system to the visual system of painting Presenting the evasive and ever-changing world through allegory and metaphor makes it possible to bridge two widely separated subjects two seemingly incompatible things Kush be l ieves that rea l i st i c paintings display the artist rsquos professional skill drawing the viewer in to accept the impossible i m a g e s e n o u g h t o s e e t h e metaphors in them and explore the different layers of meaning The sk i l l o f the a rt i s t to pa int r e a l i s t i c a l l y a l l o w s t h i s interrelation of different things to be convincing This is Kushrsquos method

RealmrdquoldquoMetaphorical The National Library in Vienna contains a miniature edition of the Holy Bible where God the Lord of Sabbath is depicted as the Architect who draws the boundaries of the future Earth in cosmic space by means of a pair of compasses This served as the basis for the paintings ldquoNewtonrdquo and ldquoThe Hand of the Lordrdquo by William Blake an English mystic poet and artist In these pieces Blake illustrates the creation of our world by the Lord-Geometrician In this painting the artist shows us the boundaries of the Earthrsquos night Two conical bundles are defined by the illumination of the Moon This is the viewpoint of an observer high above the Earth in the Cosmos A romantic mood is created by the artist conveyed by the night voyage of the sailboat around the globe

The painter draws a clear analogy between current lines and growth rings of a tree For annual rings reflect the current of time the time-stream Their thickness or thinness tells us much about the past Was it the time of hurricanes or river floods of the great heat or the great ice A man is drawn into the stream of life Though knowing the past he tries to direct the movement of his boat the flow of time inexorably carries him away to the new shores Whirlpools shallows and rough current do not leave time for thinking ndash so is the message underlying the picture The cool greenish colors correspond to this mood

Gigantic Leaf fitting a whole country inside ndash is it possible You may answer - impossible But not quite Every leaf is a tiny microcosm filled with sun and water and producing the green molecules of life As with our Great Leaf creating buildings and bridge nurturing herds of animals life You can reach the Ocean by going down the stem floating down its current And here it all is We finally can track down the architecture of the painting conceived by itsrsquo artist It seems like that thousand-year old Leaf has flown down from the branches of the Great World Tree t he s ymbo l o f t he Universe It exists in all world mythologies No wonder that the picture is painted in greenish-earthy ldquowoodenrdquo tones The life juices of the leaf on the tree are mixed with the juices streaming down its trunk and when reaching the Ocean earthrsquos powerful River of Life

The grand scheme of the world and the definition of its architecture geometry and aesthetics is the result of Divine Wisdom To comprehend his intentions Man invents models Great Leonardo da Vinci supposed that constructing his mechanical models he could go beyond the capabilities of human mind and solve the mysteries of the Creator To comprehend the mystery of flight for example he made from wax paste small models of birds capable to fly in the air But whatever models Man may conjure up he does this for the reverence of his Creator and for releasing the Creatorrsquos wisdom Only from this intentions does one build the Koln Cathedral and not a factory Only through such reasoning will mankind paint a picture of the universe from the microcosm to the macrocosm

As is known the ldquomadnessrdquo of Don Quixote was born from the obsessive reading of chivalry books The world of medieval romances became to him more real than the real life Thus from an inhabitant of the sun-scorched dusty Spanish province of La Mancha he had turned into the citizen and ruler of the boundless Empire of Imagination Its size perhaps had far surpassed that of the real Spanish empire stretched across the globe and created by other great Spaniards also called ldquomadmenrdquo ndash Columbus and Cortez The artist assumes that in this New Empire there was also a place for the fantastic butterflies with splendid wings eclipsing the fauna of Colombia Amazonia and Venezuela So instead of doing a glorious battle with the evil giant windmill Don Quixote is going to enter the duel with the giant butterflies Certainly having such a ldquoweaponrdquo he will not catch any butterfly But his net could seize Beauty and Grace of these and many other amazing creations Let us follow his noble example and stretch the net of our imaginations in search for beauty

The ocean symbol of infinity In ancient Indian myths the ocean was a never ending entity from which originated

the earth as well as the rest of the universe Chaotic behavior is characteristic of the ocean mdash the motion with

which everything began In this way the undulating ocean resembles our subconsciousness mdash the source of our creativity Our internal sight freely hovers over this limitless ocean but returns to the finite by the smallest of

margins ldquoThe soul calls upon one to sense the world and beckons the abstract back to within the borders of reality from its unbound journey through infinityrdquo wrote German dramatist and poet Friedrich von Schiller Our

While traveling in the US from the southwest to Hawaii and in South America Ive seen a number of sites with petroglyphs and pictoglyphs with humanoid figures that some people describe as alien-like

I remember very well my first two ambigram

attempts It was September 3rd 2003 I drew

them both on the same night (as I couldnrsquot

sleep) The first was a ldquoMabeyrdquo to ldquoMabeyrdquo

design (rotational) and the second was a

ldquoClaytonrdquo to rdquoClaytonrdquo design (also rotational)

Earlier that day my dad introduced me to Dan

Brownrsquos ldquoAngels amp Demonsrdquo novel He was

offering it up as a great read Well obviously I

couldnrsquot make it past the front cover I had

never seen an ambigram before and John

Langdonrsquos design blew me away I think I still

suffer from an elbow injury caused by turning

the book over and over and over all day long I

was completely dumbfounded I was hooked

I have always enjoyed drawing I remember going through a

period in my teenage years where I would draw pictures with

letters I would write the letters in such a way that they would

represent simple shapes and together would become faces

or other objects I also took a part time job in high school as

a calligrapher I would number the inside flaps (XX of XX) of

limited edition leather-bound books Then life got busy There

was a period of about 8 years where I almost completely

neglected my right brain I attended and graduated from the

University of Utah in Electrical Engineering managed a

branch office for a consulting engineering firm and also

In 1973 my journey into sound began as an

after hours trip to the local garbage dump

These after hours treasure hunt adventures were

always very rewarding for me in so many ways tons of

interesting things to explore and many times I would

find wonderful jewels others had thrown away items I

could take home to repair and enjoy On one

particularly good night I came across a perfect

condition album of Pink Floydrsquos Dark Side of the

Moon and moments later a classic Gerard record

player which even had a good needle Truly amazing

and what a find for me Most pleased with my haul I

placed the items in my Sun newspaper sack and made

my journey home I was 11 at the time and the trek

home was long and heavyhellip

Being proficient at repairing electronics and

mechanical items it wasnrsquot long before I had the

record player working and plugged into my rebuilt

headphones a gift from my dads good friend Stan

waiting for the tubes to warm up I started the record

player and placed the needle on the recordhellip With

the typical crackles and pops and slight hissing from

the contact with the turning vinyl came the gentle

sound of an ever increasing heart beat With each

passing second the volume increased to become so

intense I was amazed I went into another reality

within my mindhellip I closed my eyes and saw sonic

visions that dissolved everythinghellip

Absolutely captivated I journeyed into a world of

sonic bliss which stripped me of any connection with

my present life opening my being to cascades of sonic

textures and realities which dreams are made of that

had only haunted my imagination and teased my mind

until this very moment

sonic perfection to cause shifts in my

consciousness to bring bliss into my body and find

GOD at my core

I had found the Rosetta stone of audio bliss to my absolute amazement and total disbelief I thought how could have anyone given up and thrown away such a master piece of music the likes I had never heard beforehellip The album became the instrument of my sonic awakening my mission in life to seek sonic perfection to cause shifts in my consciousness to bring bliss into my body and find GOD at my core

In years to come through an amazing set of circumstances coincidences and very good luck I suppose considering the 1984 car accident almost took my life After the incident I found myself extremely sensitive to all sounds especially to aggressive noises and amplified sounds such as from a stereo The kind of sounds commonly found with recorded music and produced from stereo systems and especially the kind of sounds at rock concerts When I was exposed to these sounds they made me feel physically ill and quite debilitated This presented quite a challenge since electronic sounds are all around us It was until I experienced a classical symphony with the VSO that I realised WHY The cause of my discomfort was subtle and gross artificial sonic artefacts commonly found within all reproduced sounds I spent the next two years investigating and researching all of the available data and theories to do with electronic eng ineer ing sound eng ineer ing sound reproduction and monitor design and also patents of unique military abstracts

I came to realize the magical secret to creating perfectly coherent sound and developed an entire sound technology based upon my personal findings from research I had done

The unique method I discovered utilizes the entire spectrum of audible and inaudible harmonics free of many typical adorations and deformities and is able to produce absolutely breath taking sonic imagery It also has the ability to magnify that sonic image to immense proportions without causing pain or fatigue to the listener I developed a system which mimics nature and creates sound with almost limitless ease and without any noticeable degradation independent of image size or sound volume The key is within the details of the sonic image and the ability to enlarge that sonic image without altering or colouring the original image in any way The fundamental core of the sonic experience is to maintain all of the lsquotrue to lifersquo key points of the sonic image and be able to manipulate it to any size This enables it to become profound with absolute presence without shock distortion or pain of any kind which would immediately distract or disassociate the listener

In the process of exploring the effects of this coherent sound system upon myself and my friends I developed a sound bed which enhanced the visceral experience by directly channelling the coherent sonic frequencies into the body The first sound bed prototype was completed in 1992 for re l axa t ion then l a ter developed into exploring inner journeys and later yet to discover it was beneficial for heal ing of mind and body traumas Over the years I have literally spent thousands of hours o f r e s e a r c h i n t o t h i s phenomenon I found that by utilizing particularly inspiring and emot iona l ly mov ing mus ic compositions played though my sound system I was able to witness profound and long lasting physiological emotional and mental transformations taking place which would promote healing of old emotional as well as physiological issues

In 2008 I created the foundation of the Sonic Temple httpwwwtylsnet2003htm

Utilizing my entire 20000 watt Coherent Sound Technology within a permanent building structure I developed a uniquely designed floor capable of providing all the necessary support and integration processes to allow for sound to freely be transferred through the entire floor of the building In order to share the sonic bed experience with more than one person as the first bed was designed for I developed a 12 foot diameter sound bed which could support upwards of 19 people at once One year later with the formalization of the fully operational SONIC TEMPLE we opened with David Hickeyrsquos Crystal Journey Concert The Sonic Temple project ran for two years and hosted hundreds of events with wonderfully talented musicians dancers and artists from across Canada and the United States providing a unique consciousness enhancing atmosphere tuned to the coherent sound frequencies of healing

In closing sound has transformed my health and wellbeing in an amazing journey of discovery and transformation I have explored many of the finer sciences to see how the interactions of healing frequencies affect the human body mind connection and can attest to its efficacy as the proof is always in the end product

that I aim to combine in a way that is intended to bring a meaningful message to

listeners while simultaneously providing an enjoyable musical experience

Inspiration from The Gregory Brothers and DJ Steve Porter coupled with my experience with

remixing composition and auto-tune led to experiments with remixing scientists culminating in

Carl Sagans A Glorious Dawn in Fall of 2009

This first videos highly positive reception provided motivation to elaborate on the theme of

remixing scientists which spawned the Symphony of Science project Although the methods of

remixing and tuning spoken word combined with original electronic music and similarly themed

footage are unorthodox in the context of other science-themed music the results have often

been inspiring humbling and of course humorous

The project has now produced 11 full length music

videos (see the home page) and expanded to include and rely on input

from the community and collaborations with peers Since its launch in Fall 2009 Symphony of

Science has been featured on NPR Wired The Scientist Attack of the Show The Skeptics Guide

to the Universe Bad Astronomy Coast to Coast AM The Examiner netnight and many more

outlets The videos have attracted over 16 million views online contributing to the release of

the first song A Glorious Dawn on a special 7 45rpm vinyl single through Jack Whites record

label Third Man Records

After the release of the tenth video I released an album compiling all the songs plus an

unreleased track It is updated with each new song and can be downloaded for free here
