Coffee BreakAcrylics
24" x 16.5"
APM:Hi Steve, thank you so much for taking a moment to tell us more about you and your work. We’re huge fans of your workand were blown away by the beauty of Coffee Break. Can you tell us more about this piece?
Wilda: It’s an honor to have been chosen for the cover of Artist Portfolio Magazine, thank you very much. Primarily, objectsin deterioration appear in my work. Textures and character of objects that develop through time and neglect fascinate me anddrive me to create art. Since last working in the medium thirty years ago, Coffee Break was my second acrylic painting. Thatbeing the title, I wanted to leave part of the painting incomplete, suggesting the artist had likewise taken a break. The darkfoundation was the logical decision, and also enhanced the contrast with the lace doily. When initially arranging thecomposition, the doily was draped straight across, but appeared too pedestrian. Once I squeezed it together accordion-like, thatgave the picture an added grace. The table objects were found at a century old trash site, the tarnished spoon inside of the half-cup added a touch of amusement.
APM: It is a very graceful composition. This being your first acrylic painting in 30 years what can you tell us about the processfor this painting?
Wilda: I always work from photographs I’ve taken, composing in the camera, rarely making any major changes later. A tight, preliminary drawing is always the first step in my artwork. With the still life paintings, I refer back to the actual objects foradditional details if necessary. I’mworking directly on the white board throughout the entire painting, I don’t lay in basic colorvalues.Applyingglazesworks formegenerally, but there are instanceswhere I use thicker opaquepaint, especiallywith heavilycorroded objects for instance.

APM: Will you continue painting with acrylics?
Wilda:Yes! There’s a still life series I’m excited about, a large number ofpaintingswithvarious themes, all in agedwear.Theobjects, titles are there, waiting to be painted.
APM: What can you tell us about your background and life beforerediscovering acrylic paints? Did you draw or paint with a differentmedium?
Wilda: I knewartwould bemy life at an early age. I hadno formal training, for years I was a freelance graphic artist. My fine art career began with themillennium.Having agreat passion for theblack andwhite image, graphitewas my medium of choice for a decade. It’s an undervalued art medium, plus I quite enjoyed the challenge of working without the use of color.Large drawings could take upwards of three or more months to complete, much more involved for me than a painting. With the graphite drawingsubjects, it was ‘the discovery’ that was exciting, the icons of ruin in therural environment, abandoned houses, rusted trucks, trains. This extensiveseries of still life paintings I’m now producing feels more creativelycontrolled with composition possibilities, lighting, what perspectiveworks best, etc. Finding those unique objects in disrepair that now relatetogether for a particular theme is still the most invigorating part of thecreative process. Forme, those finds are like discovering gold, though theymay be a bit tarnished.
APM: So the theme of decay began with the graphite drawings andcontinued into this new series of paintings. It sounds like the search forwhat to paint is really an adventure for you. The final product (painting ordrawing) is refined, like gold, but the appreciation for those discoveredobjects really comes through in thepainting. Are there artists that influenceyour work?

The final product (painting or drawing) is refined, likegold, but theappreciation for thosediscoveredobjects really comes throughin the painting. Are there artists that influence your work?
Wilda: Undoubtedly, Andrew Wyeth. Discovering his work in my teenageyearswas an instant soul bond. His subdued, often nearmonochromatic palette, the contemplative portraits, the intimacy of simple objects, all of these thingswere an immediate connection. His pastoral environments were familiar andsimilar to mine, being a native New Englander, living in a farming community.I had the great fortune of meeting Mr. Wyeth ten years ago, one of the mostmemorable moments of my life I must say. A drawing of mine is part of theFarnsworth Museum’s collection. It is of Andrew’s brother-in-law, a docent attheOlsonhouse, andhasbeenondisplay insideof that house inCushing,Maine.Maxfield Parrish I also greatly admire. His work, of majestic grand oaks, rockformations, idealistic vistas, often romanticism while at other times whimsicalin nature. Both artists are very different, but such inspiration.
APM: Amazing! We’re huge fans of AndrewWyeth and James Welling, who isalso deeply inspired by the work of Andrew Wyeth, is the focus of a wonderfulart review by Sarah Kate Jorgensen for our blog. I can see Wyeth’s influencein your color palette and Maxfield Parrish in the poetic nature of yourcompositions. Besides here and over at the http://myartcontest.com galleries, where can our readers enjoy your work?
Wilda: I’m amember of the National Society of Painters in Casein andAcrylicand Allied Artists of America, both in New York City, and others. It’s alwaysexciting to be involved with those national juried exhibition organizations. Also, in the autumnof 2015 at theD’AmourMuseumofFineArts inSpringfieldMA, I’m curating an exhibition of pencil artists. It’s a fantastic, diverse groupincluding two pencil sculptors. Here is a link to my website:www.stevewilda.com
APM:We’d love to see the shows and want to encourage all of our readers inSpringfield,NewYorkand surroundingareas toheadout thereand see the showin person.

My ultimate goal is to inspire, encourage imagination, evoke passion, awaken the sleeping creator in each soul and ultimately help unite theplanet through the universal language of visual art.
I am interested in painting abstract, surreal worlds, landscapes, seascapesandeverything in between, which only exist in the imagination.I am inspired primarily by nature and the life force that drives growth, change and evolution. It is this unseen experience that I find humbling yetmajestic. It is what connects us all to one another and what I hope todelicately unravel in each painting.
I grewupalong the coast of Southern,Californiawhich iswheremyaffinityfor the ocean was born. As a child, I spent countless hours snorkeling inthe seas of Hawaii and California. The effect this had on my imaginationhas greatly impacted the work I create. I am currently living and workingin New Orleans, LA and will soon be traveling to countless oceans tobroaden and enhance my next series of paintings.

Get off the L train at Jefferson Street in Bushwick and youʼve suddenly entered a mythic landscape – nothing like the regimented, urban sprawl of Manhattan. Block after block of abandon industrial brick gyrates with vibrant graffiti – each brick wall more fantasticthan the next. The art acts as marker, a signal that you have entered a zone where transformation is a state of mind.
During seventh annual Bushwick Open Studios (BOS), the streets were busy; all the hip new restaurants were packed, and thedenizens were raucous. From Friday, May 31st to Sunday, June 2nd, BOS hosted over 600 events including: exhibitions, individualstudios, performances, musicians and designers. BOS is a testament to sheer determination: the all-volunteer organization pulledtogether a massive and complete guide to every single studio and event over the three-day fest.

ART REVIEWS
Bushwick Collective Wall Mural - Photo Credit: Deborah Johnstone
Jones begins her show with the works on paper, and she ends it with her sculptures. Structuring her show like this, Jones shows acertain genius. Her works on paper, a triptych, are passive, light, soft and even innocent, withmild long curving lines. Theywelcomeviewers to the showgiving thema sense of comfort and calm. Her sculptures aremasculine—compact, firm, stout, with strong curvesand powerful grooves. They usher the viewer away from themost powerful part of Jonesʼ show -her paintings- while reminding thosewho have experienced the show that they cannot live forever in a space that transforms them. Theymust return to the real world withits inevitable harsh realities.

Jennie C. Jones pushes the world of art to a new place. An African Americanartist, Jones does this with her minimalist show, “Higher Resonance," whichturnsa roomof theHirshhornMuseumandSculptureGarden inWashingtonD.C.intoaneat, pristineplace. Jonesshows threeworksonpaper, twosculpturesandmore than ten paintings; she also adds something novel and powerful. Like adirector of silent film, Jones accompanies her works with organized unusualsound: recomposed avant-garde African-American music—uncanny, futuristic, jazzy kind of stuff.
