Included in this exhibition of 20 new works are a variety of paintings featuring renowned artist Slonem’s whimsical portraits of colorful birds, butterflies and bunnies. Memorial BenefitGregg Rickards, a 2006 East

Hampton High School graduate, lost his battle to cancer in August 2012. Rickards was an outstanding

musician, performing with the jazz band, fiddle club, and high school orchestra and earned a music degree from SUNY Oneonta in 2010. His family and friends have put together a scholarship which will be awarded each year to an East Hampton High School graduate pursuing a degree in music. A memorial scholarship benefit concert will take place February 1 at 7 PM at the high school featuring local talents. Today’s Birthday: John Hancock, 1737His name has become synonymous with the word “signature.” When John Hancock signed

the Declaration of Independence with his trademark flourish, he assured himself immortality.The son of a minister, Hancock grew up in Braintree, Massachusetts. His father baptized

one of his neighbors who soon became his boyhood friend. That boy was John Adams, who also signed the Declaration years later.

Hancock inherited a very profitable mercantile business but his call was to public service. Like Adams a Harvard graduate, Hancock served as Governor twice and was also President of the Second Continental Congress.

Hancock was an ardent supporter of the revolution and became a key voice against the British, particularly after the Boston Massacre in 1770.

When he died in 1797 a national day of mourning was declared. His name lives on, not only with the giant insurance company that bears his name, but two U.S. Navy vessels, countless counties across the U.S., a tower in Boston, the John Hancock Center in Chicago, and a student center at Boston University.

ARIES (Mar. 20 - Apr. 20) Come on, aren’t there enough new and exciting things going on? Boredom is never your friend and this should be a time of really interesting ideas. Why not try to do some of those new things, rather than fixating on some seemingly unsolvable problem? Do what you can do.

John Dies At The End (NR) Don Coscarelli’s horror-fantasy-comedy is so over the top that it’s actually interesting. There are psychedelics and aliens, and that’s always a good pairing. Somehow, Paul Giamatti agreed to co-star. Try it.

New To Theaters

The Last Stand (R ) The baddest, the most violent, the nastiest, meanest drug dealer in the history of drug dealing is descending on a small border town and he’s bringing hell with him – an army of thugs. The only

thing stopping them is the sheriff, a disgraced former LAPD detective and his name is Ahnold. Enough said. Actually Schwarzenegger is, well, Schwarzenegger, and that still counts for something.

New On DVD

Ted Seth MacFarlane, the creator of “Family Guy,” tries his hand on the big screen with this offbeat effort, about a grown man (Mark Wahlberg) whose cherished Teddy Bear suddenly comes to life. Really. There may be films that have been produced on flimsier plot lines, but we can’t think of any offhand. Nevertheless, MacFarlane has a sick sense of humor, and some of his stuff is truly funny. Incidentally, he earned an Oscar nod for the title song he co-authored and is co-hosting the awards show.

Now Playing Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters

(PG-13) Really. We don’t know how Jeremy Renner got roped into taking this role, but we suspect a great deal of money had a lot to do with it.

Gemma Arterton plays the sister, and the pair merrily hunts down evildoers until they themselves become targets. You’d have to be pretty lonely or very bored to go see it.

Gangster Squad (R ) Sean Penn plays mob kingpin Mickey Cohen and he runs amuck in LA circa 1949. Josh Brolin and Ryan Gosling play the good guys. It quickly evaporates into a noisy bang bang, and Emma Stone goes down with the ship. Rueben Fleischer (Zombieland) directs with a heavy hand.

My Brooklyn (not rated) A documentary by Kelly Anderson that chronicles changes in the famed borough since the filmmaker moved there in 1988. The question to ask yourself before buying a ticket is, “Do I really care?”

Storage 24 (R) This silly sci-fi effort, about two London couples caught in an endless maze of tunnels and a storage facility, has flop written all over it. There’s a reason why bad movies are released in the throes of winter. Consider this Exhibit A.

The Loving Story This documentary about the 1967 Supreme Court decision that legalized interracial marriage is on the short list for an Oscar. Contains actual footage of

the couple involved, Richard Loving and Mildred Jeter. Riveting.

The Guilt Trip * (PG-13) The Seth Rogan comedy machine is fully revved for this delightful foray wherein a young chemist (Rogan) and his mom (Barbra Streisand) hit the road to hawk his latest invention. The banter, courtesy of screenwriter Dan Folgelman, is often hilarious and always real -- that’s because the script is based on a similar trip Fogelman took. Streisand, the quintessential Jewish Mother, is at her absolute best. Kathy Najimy and Adam Scott co-star. The best comedy of the year -- don’t miss it.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey * (PG-13) Peter Jackson, flush from his success with Tolkien’s Lord Of The Rings trilogy, takes what in essence was its prelude and turns it into a trilogy as well. Many of the same faces reclaim their roles including Ian McKellen (Gandolf), Andy Serkis (Gollum) and Elijah Wood (Frodo). The film is a technical marvel and Martin Freeman is wonderful as Bilbo. Nevertheless, there is a sense that Jackson has stretched things out and diluted the story, and the guess here is the public might well lose interest before the finale, assuming the third film is released during our lifetime. Still, it’s well worth seeing.
