An asterisk (*) denotes an Indy Best Movie pick.New To Theaters

A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night * (R) First time writer director Ana Lily Amirpour turns in a wildly inventive and delightful romp through all things gory in this pulp masterpiece. It’s being billed as the first Iranian Vampire Western ever made, if that provides any clarity. It’s a treat.Coming Soon

The Imitation Game * (PG-13) If Benedict Cumberbatch looks familiar it’s because he’s been in like, a zillion movies over the past few years. He stars in this one, and it is a juicy role to be sure. Cumberbatch plays Alan Turing, a mathematical genius who helped crack the German code during World War II, and went on the become a key figure in the development of the first computers. His life falls apart when he is prosecuted for being a homosexual. Keira Knightley co-stars. It’s getting Oscar buzz.New On DVD

Maleficent Angelina Jolie lights up the screen in this fantasy about Disney’s most iconic villain. Elle Fanning is an able co-star playing Princess Aurora, and Imelda Staunton sparkles, as does Miranda Richardson. It is visually stunning and somehow Jolie makes the sometimes-awkward screenplay work. Now Playing

Foxcatcher (R) White-hot Channing Tatum gets serious about an Olympic wrestler overshadowed by his more successful brother. Steve Carell, who costars, also attempts to get serious, never a good idea. Vanessa Redgrave, who has made a career playing a stern unhappy matriarch, fits right in. Mark Ruffalo plays the older brother. It’s serious and ponderous and things get ugly and everyone is mining for

Oscar gold. Directed by Bennett Miller (Moneyball). Sienna Miller co-stars. Probably doesn’t make the cut.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part I (PG-13) What can we say? It’s risen to Harry Potter levels of self-importance as a breathless world waits to see what Katniss Everdeen will do next, even though we know from reading the books. Donald Sutherland, Julianne Moore et al are back. Not quite as good as the first two installments, but it’s still essential movie going.

Dumb and Dumber To (PG-13) You really can’t make such an incredibly

dumb movie twice, but the lure of the almighty dollar beckons. The boys are considerably older and, if humanly possible, have gotten considerably dumber – in fact, they are imbeciles. If you find that funny, by all means go.

Jessabelle (PG-13) Sarah Snook (Sleeping Beauty) gets the title role

in this horror flick from the folks that gave us Paranormal Activity, which is what it would be to sit through the entire 90 minutes. But the gal is a pretty good actress, and there are a couple of scary scenes, and winter is coming, so teens could do worse on a Friday night.

It’s hard to believe Anna Mae Bullock is 74, because she still has the best gams in rock and roll.

It’s even harder to believe she was completely washed up before resurrecting her career — in a big way. In fact, she was arguably the top female rock star in the world at one point during her “comeback.”

The truth was, she never left, but it took some time for the fickle public to realize what a powerhouse she was.

She was born and raised in rural Tennessee, and like her parents, picked cotton – her father was a sharecropper. When her parents divorced Anna Mae, 13, was sent to live with her strict grandmother, who made her go to church. Anna Mae, forced to join the choir, sang in public for the first time.

By the time she was 18 Anna Mae, studying to become a nurse, was asked to sing at a club with a local band. She ended up recording

Anna Mae Bullock, 1939a song under the name “Little Ann.” The leader of that band was Ike Turner, and he eventually married Anna Mae and changed her name to Tina.

Ike Turner was abusive and controlling, but he was a gifted musician and he taught Tina not only how to sing but also about music and the music biz. The Ike and Tina Turner Revue had a string of hits, headlined in Las Vegas, and opened for the Rolling Stones on a world tour. Her rendition of “Proud Mary” became the band’s biggest hit. But Tina, depressed, attempted suicide and filed for divorce in 1976.

Afraid of Ike, she went into hiding.

Slowly, Tina Turner began to rebuild her career, appearing on television shows including “Hollywood Squares” and “The Brady Bunch.” She developed a cabaret act and began singing in

small clubs. She was even booked into the Bay Street Theatre in Sag Harbor at one point.

In 1983 she had a modest hit with the Al Green song “Let’s Get Together” that earned her a record deal.

She cut the album Private Dancer, named after a song Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits wrote for her, which was released as a single and became a hit. In 1984 Capital Records released the second single from the album, “What’s Love Got To With It.”

The song exploded onto the airways and made Turner an international star again. It earned the 1985 Best Song Grammy and was named one of the top songs of the century by Rolling Stone. Turner, at age 44, was back on top. This time around Turner, who learned from Ike’s business savvy, managed her own career.

A movie of her life, also titled What’s Love Got To Do With It

starring Angela Bassett was a smash and introduced her music to a new generation of fans.

Turner had a huge hit in 1998 with “When the Heartache Is Over” from her album Twenty Four Seven. A 2000 world tour was the highest grossing of the year, bringing in over $100 million. Turner, on top, decided to retire, moved to Switzerland, and became a Swiss citizen.

She has made occasional appearances since, most notably in 2003 when she was honored by President George W. Bush at the Kennedy Center and in 2008 when she returned to the stage for “Tina: The Fiftieth Anniversary Tour.” She performed live with Beyonce at the Grammy Awards the following year.

Tina, an eight-time Grammy winner, is a member of the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame and was named to the Rolling Stone list of The Greatest Singers Of All Time at number 17.

Eyes are peeled on Side Show. Bill Condon’s refashioned book and dramatic new staging brings the return of the cult musical, now more passionate, more visceral than ever. Exploring the “fleshy link” between our own humanity and the freaks we see on stage, the story follows the Hilton sisters, the conjoined twins Violet and Daisy, who made their name on the Vaudeville circuit. Bill Russell’s lyrics and Henry Krieger’s music remain absolutely chilling.

Here, the taboo of being oneself, “not like everybody else,” makes for the show’s emotional impact. And the magic of watching Erin Davie as Violet and Emily Padgett as Daisy stuck together yet so alone creates a soul searching tension.

Padgett is especially wondrous in song. David St. Louis as another

outsider who falls in love with Violet, Matthew Hydzik as her two-timing fiancé, and Robert Joy as the girls’ sinister owner are outstanding. It’s an empowering experience, not to be missed.

Hugh Jackman plays a mysterious lover in Jez Butterworth’s The River, originally performed in London. In a remarkably nuanced performance, Jackman engages The Woman in his rustic cabin with his love of fishing, wine, food, music and poetry. In that role Cush Jumbo seems uncomfortably in love with him.

After she walks off to pick something up from the bedroom, another Woman, played by a dainty, mermaid-like Laura Donnelly, enters. The conversation continues as if nothing has changed. And

so this dance continues, the two carrying on in this romantic interlude, or are they two different interludes on the same theme? We don’t know what happens to the women in these serial relationships, nor do we know if he loves them, murders them, or just mourns another.

Set in his rustic cabin, the emotional life is delicate, the behaviors clearly repetitive, and the outcome is hauntingly ambiguous. As helmed by Ian Rickson, The River is a poetic, romantic journey, albeit the life of a thriller is breathing within.

Set in an English private school, Simon Stephens’ Punk Rock, off Broadway at the Lucille Lortel, peers into the world of our youth. Overwrought by parents, tense about exams, and uneasy about their sexuality, they lead nightmarish lives. Masked creatures rush onto the

stage while blasts of horrific music jolt right through us. And those are just the scene shifts; the rest is right out of the headlines.

Director Trip Cullman drives the production with such intensity, one nearly overlooks the lack of motive for the violence that ensues. Will Pullen as the class bully evokes our disdain, while Douglas Smith, a delicate, dejected kid with lofty dreams and expectations wins our empathy, to a point.

The ensemble rounds out with transfixing characterizations, most especially Noah Robbins as the nerdy classmate, and a prime victim. Darron L West’s intrusive sound design, Mark Wendland’s frightening set of a library without books, and Japhy Weideman’s severe lighting create the horror of our youth.
