INSIDE OUT: My Story from Jacqui Borrows, young dancerartsNK has been well known for several years for its diverse andexciting Youth Dance Programme. Numerous young peoplefrom ages 4 to 19 have benefited from participation in groupsranging from contemporary dance to hip-hop.One young dancer who has loved her involvement with thedance programme is Jacqui Borrows. Being a member ofkNacKer'd Youth Dance Company inspired Jacqui to apply forthe recently introduced Dance Leadership Scheme. When asked about how she benefits from her involvement,Jacqui replied:

"It’s refreshing because you get to work with so many other dancers and choreographers and get so many dif-ferent experiences within dance. There are so many opportunities to learn new things and try different vari-eties of contemporary dance."

WELCOME INSIDE OUT

artsNK - Experience Great Art

Experience, of course, includes performing at public events such as the recent ‘Inspiring Young Talent’ danceshowcase, which took place at the Terry O'Toole Theatre in February. Does Jacqui enjoy performing?" There’s such a good feeling after performing a piece well. You feel like all your hard work was worth it, andgetting good feedback from audience members is great too; knowing that you danced well enough to makesomeone go “Wow, that was really good!” is so satisfying."As part of her dance leadership training, Jacqui is currently involved in preparations for True Motion, the coun-ty contribution to the U. Dance national dance festival. We asked Jacqui how preparations were going:"Really well! We had an extra rehearsal today to help work on it and pick out the aspects that needed extrawork. The piece is finished and just needs a little polishing. I’m so excited because it’s an extremely goodpiece. There are some really good choreographic ideas in it and it’s coming together very well I think."Although we have no doubt that Jacqui's dance experience with artsNK has been invaluable, we'll leave thelast word to her:"I just love working with all the different people, learning new things and having new experiences. I'm improv-ing as a dancer, pushing myself further and I love having the support that you get from all the artsNK team."Maybe one day we'll see Jacqui passing on her enthusiasm and expertise in a professional capacity! We wishher well for the future. To read the full interview, go to:

FIT FOR PURPOSE: More than just survivalIn a climate where every arts organisation fights to retain its fund-ing, evolving in order to survive has become a priority.Over 25 years of investment in the arts, NKDC has evolved in itsapproach, and in a review of its cultural services in 2011, NKDCidentified the opportunity to weave different strands of its provi-sion together, offering protection for each and allowing for coop-erative working, where appropriate, that would equip each strandto survive and thrive in the challenging economic climate.artsNK, together with the NCCD, Design Factory and The Terry O’Toole Theatre, are going to be launching a new BLOG to start anopen discussion about the process and plans for bringing the serv-ice strands together, offering information about the opportunitiesto get involved in new arts experiences and inviting suggestions ofwhat else you think should be happening.
