Prelude When Jesus Came to Jordan (tune: King’s Lynn) David Cherwien Dr. Michael Stefanek, Organ Welcome and Announcements Greeting: One: The heavens open. The Spirit descends. Many: Jesus emerges from the water. One: And a voice echoes through the blue expanse. Many: “This is my child, the Beloved, with whom I am well-pleased.” One: Jesus is named and loved. Many: Let us worship the one who names and loves us still.

    Apostles’ Creed, No. 882

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, is seated at the right hand of the Father, and will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Opening Prayer: Most wonderful God, flawed though we are, we too delight in your beloved Son. We too yearn to be washed clean and called beloved. When Jesus was baptized, the heavens opened up and Spirit came down like a dove. Send the Spirit upon us again today, and open us to your unending love. Through Christ Jesus our Lord. Amen!

First Lesson, Genesis 1:1-5 [Scr iptures found on pages 8 & 9] One: This is the Word of the Lord. Many: Thanks be to God. Second Lesson, Acts 19:1-7 One: This is the Word of the Lord. Many: Thanks be to God.

Scriptures 1st Sunday after Epiphany - Baptism of the Lord: January 10, 2021

Genesis 1:1-5 New International Version (NIV) In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” And there was evening, and there was morning - the first day. One: This is the Word of the Lord. Many: Thanks be to God. Acts 19:1-7 New Living Translation (NLT) While Apollos was in Corinth, Paul traveled through the interior regions until he reached Ephesus, on the coast, where he found several believers. “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” he asked them. “No,” they replied, “we haven’t even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.” “Then what baptism did you experience?” he asked. And they replied, “The baptism of John.” Paul said, “John’s baptism called for repentance from sin. But John himself told the people to believe in the one who would come later, meaning Jesus.” As soon as they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. Then when Paul laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in other tongues and prophesied. 7 There were about twelve men in all.

One: This is the Word of the Lord. Many: Thanks be to God.

Mark 4:1-11 Good News Translation (GNT)

So John appeared in the desert, baptizing and preaching. “Turn away from your sins and be baptized,” he told the people, “and God will forgive your sins.” Many people from the province of Judea and the city of Jerusalem went out to hear John. They confessed their sins, and he baptized them in the Jordan River.

John wore clothes made of camel's hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and his food was locusts and wild honey. He announced to the people, “The man who will come after me is much greater than I am. I am not good enough even to bend down and untie his sandals. I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”

Not long afterward Jesus came from Nazareth in the province of Galilee, and was baptized byJohn in the Jordan. As soon as Jesus came up out of the water, he saw heaven opening and the Spirit coming down on him like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, “You are my own dear Son. I am pleased with you.” One: This is the Gospel of the Lord, Jesus Christ. Many: Thanks be to God!

Souper Bowl Sunday The youth of Asbury invite you to help them feed those who are hungry in our community. Starting January 17, 2021, there will be shopping bags and lists available to take and return with the requested items by February 7. Please help us help those in need. Hyde Scholarship Application Available Soon! The Hyde Scholarship is presented each year to one or sometimes two graduating seniors who meet specific criteria. Applicants must be a member of Asbury UMC and a graduate of a Wicomico County public high school with good academic standing, and have been accepted to a 2 or 4-year college. They must also meet Sunday School attendance requirements, and be active in other church-related activities. The application will be on-line and is due by Sunday, March 21. The scholarship(s) will be presented at a later date. Confirmation 2021 Classes! Asbury is again partnering with other local United Methodist Churches to offer Confirmation and membership to any student, 8th grade and older, who is interested in learning about the faith and joining the church. Please contact Brooke if you would like to sign up. More details will be shared as they become available. 2021 is upon us! It is time to start thinking about ‘my one word’ for the new year! There is a helpful book to go along with this concept—if you would like a copy, please see Kristen. Here is the nutshell: Instead of a list of new year’s resolutions, choosing just one word helps us to truly focus on discerning God’s path for us as we grow spiritually. Pray about what word God is calling you to focus on in the upcoming year. The website myoneword.org has lots of words if you need some ideas. Speaking of 2021, a great way to grow in our faith is to have not only a devotion, but an accountability group. There will be a group beginning in mid-January focusing on the gospel of Luke. This group will consist of scripture copying, scripture mapping, and a weekly zoom discussion Monday evenings at 7pm. It will also be possible to do the devotion on your own if you prefer. Email [email protected] if you are interested.

Check out Asbury’s CoronaBible project in the library. This was a community effort in the spring and summer to hand copy scripture when we were forced to be physically apart, but remained spiritually united in our faith and worship through the word. We have a lot of the gospels and if you would like to contribute to this living document, please let me Kristen know. Opportunity Shop Update The Opportunity Shop winter hours: Open for sales Thursdays 10am-1pm. Donations will be accepted Mondays 8:30am -11:30am and Thursdays 9:30am –1pm or by appointments. Please call the church if you need an appointment.
