4JambalayaFestival CrownsRoyalty to ReignOver 48thFestivalSaturday, May 2nd and Sunday,May 3rd the Jambalaya FestivalAssociations annual QueensPageant was held at theGonzales Civic Center.

The contest saw 7 young ladiescompeting for the coveted titlesof Teen and Miss GonzalesJambalaya Queen. Among theTeen Contestants were MarleeHebert, Jenna Cornett, EmilieSchwing and Grace Graugnard.After answering an onstagequestion and participating inthe Evening GownCompetition, outgoing TeenQueen Berkley Parent gave herfarewell address to the crowd.Berkley spoke of her travels asTeen Queen and thanked herparents for being there everystep of the way throughout heryear as queen.

Teen contestants were awardedMiss Congeniality, Fashion,Photogenic and Queen.

Second Runner up in the TeenDivision was Miss JennaCornett, First Runner Up inthe Teen Division was MissEmilie Schwing. GraceGraugnard of Geismar wascrowned the 2015 Teen MissGonzales Jambalaya Queen.

Graugnard is the 16 year olddaughter of James and RebeccaGraugnard of Geismar. A sophomore at DutchtownHighschool, Graugnard is amember of the Griffin Girlsdance team, National Beta club,and Spanish club. She wasrecently appointed SophomoreHistorian for the DTHSStudent Council and maintainsa 4.5 GPA. In her free time,Grace enjoys visiting nursinghomes in the Gonzales area.She recently founded theKindness Cards Project atDutchtown Highschool wherestudents receive anonymous

cards containing positive messages.

Contestants in the MissDivision included DallasLipoma, Kolbie Larimore andAlyssa Hughes. Contestantsbegan the day with an interviewcompetition in front of a panelof distinguished judges.Contestants were asked ques-tions about themselves and thefestival history. Followinginterviews, contestantsanswered an onstage questionand competed in the EveningGown Competition.

Outgoing Queen LaurenBlouin was presented in full

train and mantle escorted byher father, Leon Blouin,onstage for her final walk asqueen. Blouin addressed thecrowd for one last time asqueen mentioning her year asqueen being one of the mostmemorable of her life. Shethanked the JFA for all of thesupport given to her throughout her reign.

Following the conclusion ofBlouins farewell address, Misscontestants were awarded MissCongeniality, Fashion,Photogenic and Queen. SecondRunner up in the Miss Divisionwas Miss Dallas Lipoma. FirstRunner Up was Miss Kolbie

Larimore leaving Miss AlyssaHughes crowned as the 2015Jambalaya Queen.

Alyssa LeaAnn Hughes is the18 daughter of Preston andPam Hughes of Prairieville. Asenior at Dutchtown HighSchool graduating May 17th,2015. While attendingDutchtown, Alyssa began anawareness organization, SitStrap Save which raises aware-ness for proper child restraint invehicles. She also served as anactive member of the DTHSAllied Health Program whereshe was able to volunteer forthe Special Olympics, Relay forLife and school fundraisers.

5Hughes is an active member ofAscension Parish 4-H throughwhich she was recently awarded3rd place at LSU 4-HUniversity for her project inSolutions Unlimited.

Hughes will reign over the 48thannual Festival held May 22nd

23rd. As JFA Queen, she willserve as an ambassador for theAssociation and the City ofGonzales by traveling through-out Louisiana visiting numerousfairs and festivals. Hughes willalso compete for the title ofLouisiana Association of Fairsand Festivals, Queen of Queens

during the annual conventionheld in February.

Also apart of SaturdaysPageant festivities were QueensDay events hosted by outgoingqueens Blouin and Parent. Theevents welcomed 21 visitingqueens from across Louisiana.The Queens participated intheir very own mini-potcooking contest, which has nowbecome a tradition during thePageant Weekend Festivities.Father of Teen Queen Berkley,and 2007 World Champion,Jeff Parent, instructed queenson how to cook a mini pot jambalaya as well as teachingthe ladies the 10Commandments of cookingjambalaya.

68th Orange Festival Queen,Eden Bubrig and 78th GreaterNew Orleans Floral TrailQueen, Faith Baggett took thetitle of Queens Mini PotChampions.

Sunday, May 3rd theAssociation hosted their annualBaby and Junior Royalty

competition with over 50 girls and boys participatingin the pageant.

STATE REPRESENTATIVE

POSTPatrick Pat Bell announced todaythat he is a candidate for StateRepresentative, District 59, in theOctober 24th election. Citing hisexperience in government, communityinvolvement and reputation for getting things done, Bell said he willVote the way you would vote and bean effective representative for you,making well-thought-out decisions

that benefit the people of our area.

Ive been a parish councilman,worked in the chemical industry formore than three decades, worked for the sheriffs office, served onnumerous boards and commissions,been involved in our community andserved in the U.S. Marine Corps,Bell said. Ill draw on these variedlife experiences to capably representyou in the state legislature.

As a former Ascension ParishCouncilman, Bell knows firsthand theissues facing this fast-growing area.My fellow councilmembers electedme four times as their chairman andrelied upon me to get things done fortheir districts and our parish, Bellsaid. Working together, the counciland parish government accomplisheda great deal and Im ready to do evenmore as your state representative.

Bell said the most pressing issuefacing District 59, which is whollywithin Ascension Parish, is the direneed to improve the areas infra-structure, in particular state roads,Which are so overburdened theyhave become a deterrent to continued responsible development.We send millions of tax dollars to thestate and were just not getting anything back to help solve our trafficproblems. Ill never quit working tosecure road improvements and instituting proven methods toimprove traffic flow.

As state representative, Bell will also

focus on improving drainage. Iserved for four years on the AmiteRiver Basin Commission, includingthree years as chairman, interactingwith drainage and flood protectionexperts on every level of government.Ill use this unique insight to formcoalitions that will solve recurringdrainage issues and move threatening water away from homes and businesses.

The commission oversees theplanned Comite River DiversionCanal, a $675 million federal, stateand local venture that will divert highwater to the Mississippi River fromthe Comite and Amite Rivers, reducing the threat of flooding inAscension, Livingston and East Baton Rouge Parishes.

Bell currently serves as a commis-sioner for the Pontchartrain LeveeDistrict, which oversees some 125miles of federal levees and hurricaneprotection projects from BatonRouge to near New Orleans.

Continued improvements to our educational system are at the top ofBells list of priorities. I know thevalue of good schools Ive beenmarried to a teacher for 46 years!Bell said. I will support increasedfunding where justified and commonsense reforms supported by the people who actually work in ourschools, not bureaucrats who readsome high-priced study.

Bell also wants to strengthen ethics

laws which he says will fight politicalcorruption and further enhance ourbusiness climate, leading to the creation of more good jobs and economic opportunities for local people.

Bell worked for Uniroyal Chemical inGeismar for 32 years before retiring.He also served as a Sergeant-at-Arms for the Louisiana Senate andwas a commissioned deputy with theAscension Parish Sheriffs Office inthe course of his work as CourtBailiff for the 23rd Judicial District.Bell served as a board member ofRiver Parishes Community College,the River Regions Cancer ScreeningBoard and the Geismar ComplexFederal Credit Union. He is a veteran of the United States Marine Corps.

The Great,the Goodand theUgly

Its spring again, and like mostof yall, youre in the yard,planting flowers, and makingtime to take care of homeupgrades and fix it projects.Ive done the same myself lately, and I tell you whatitsbeen interesting. Besides thebasic landscaping and organiz-ing, Ive had three projects in

the past few months that hadvery different outcomes.

The Great - I had a build-ininstalled in my living room areanext to my fireplace. I thoughtit would be great for storing mycable box and for displaying mypretty things. So, I called thebest person for the jobmystep Dad and owner of J&JCabinets in Baton Rouge. Hecame over for a consult prior tothe beginning of the project.He gave me great advice onhow big the build-in should be,how many storage componentsit should have, and other detailsI would have never thought of!Also, there was a seamless andprofessional installation in theend. I am very pleased withthe results and could have neverdone such a big project on myown. It was definitely out ofmy scope of ability. So, myadvice is to use a professionalfor any project you have noexpertise in!

The Good - I redid the frontdoor to my home. The paintwas peeling and it looked awful.So, with the help of my momand a couple electric sanders,we tackled this project together.We had all the right tools, andalthough I thought we wouldbe done in a day, it was nice to

have a finished product in acouple of days. We sanded,primed, applied two coats ofpaint and then edged to thebest of our ability. The outcome wasnt bad, I do have

a couple of bubbles in the finish, but overall I love it!

The Ugly - I decided toinstall wire shelving in mygarage closet. I thought thiswould save on space and allowme to organize smaller items ina designated area. First of all, Ipurchased the shelving and thebrackets at different times, so Igot the wrong size brackets.Also, I didnt have the righttools, and without a stud finderor a level, it was a bit tricky. Afew holes in the wall and somespackle later, I decided to waiton the project until I could getsome advice and the right tools!

Ultimately, I suggest gatheringinformation on a project beforeyou start, make sure you havethe right tools, talk to peoplethat have done similar projectsfor advice, tips and tricks. And finally, if youre at a loss,consult a professional, andyoull save yourself time, energy and money!

since 1956 when my parents, Lloydand Clara Cagnolatti moved our family here. Mom and Dad werestrong Christians and an inspirationto all of their children. They set theexample, teaching us the differencebetween right & wrong, good & bad,and truth versus lies. I'm proud tobe their son.Since 1956, the only time I've been

away from Ascension Parish was toserve in the U.S. Air Force during theViet Nam War. As an officer, I completed several military trainingcourses which led to leadership roleswhile on various assignments. Whenthe Viet Nam war ended, I was honorably discharged and came backto Ascension Parish, and I have livedhere ever since. This is my home.There's no other place I'd rather live.I learned how to lead as an officer inthe Air Force and that leadership rolehas transitioned into a successfulcareer of over 35 years in industrial business development and public service.My experience includes serving

with numerous, civic & industrialorganizations, and volunteer groups.Some of them are: 4 years on theGonzales City Council (2008-2012),23 years on the Gonzales CivilService Commission (6 years asChairman), Served on the Boards ofDirectors for the Ascension EconomicDevelopment Corporation (AEDC) ,Ascension Chamber of Commerce(Chairman of the Board in 2008),Louisiana Chemical Industry Allianceand Associated Builders &Contractors. On the volunteer side, Ihave worked with the American HeartAssociation, United Way, AmericanCancer Society and Project KidzKove, which funded, designed andbuilt Kidz Kove Discovery Park(KKDP), then donated it to the City.KKDP is probably the most

successful public/private project inthe history of this area. I was proudto be involved with that project fromthe very beginning when I served onthe City Council. KKDP is an exampleof what can happen when governmentworks TOGETHER with PrivateGroups to PROVIDE for their community.I am a member of St. Theresa of

Avila Catholic Church and serve as aLector and Eucharistic Minister. Throughout my adult life, I've tried togive back to this community that hasmade me feel safe and secure. As Icontinue in my commitment to giveback and to serve, I am announcingmy candidacy for the District 10 Seaton the Ascension Parish Council. Ascension Parish is experiencing thelargest industrial and residentialgrowth in its history. And with thatgrowth, we have already begun tofeel the strain on our infrastructure -roads and highways are inadequateand congested; we need drainageimprovements and a much neededparish-wide wastewater system.Also, there's the ongoing need forexpanding economic development,tourism & culture, and recreationalfacilities. The growth of Ascensionwill continue and if we aren't prepared for it, the situation will only get worse. Ascension needs strong leadership

that will address the issues and "DOSOMETHING" about them! I want toserve the people of District 10 in aspirit of cooperation and unification. Iwill serve as the liaison betweenParish Government and MayorArceneaux and the Gonzales CityCouncil to work in unison with themon common issues and concerns. I will be proactive in building relationships with the other ParishCouncilmen so that we can be ONE Council representing ALL of Ascension for "THE COMMON GOOD". As my campaign rolls out over the

next few months, I'll be asking foryour input, respect your opinions andshow you that I intend to representDistrict 10 with consistency and reliability.

You Should Know

Oral Cancer often starts as a tiny,unnoticed white or red spot or soreanywhere in the mouth. It can affect any area of the oralcavity including the lips, gum tissue,check lining, tongue and the hard orsoft palate. Other signs include:- A sore that bleeds easily or doesnot heal

- A color change of the oral tissues- A lump, thickening, rough spot, crust or small eroded area

- Pain, tenderness, or numbness anywhere in the mouth or on the lips

- Difficulty chewing, swallowing,

Oral cancer screening is a routinepart of a dental examination.Regular check-ups, including anexamination of the entire mouth,are essential in the early detection ofcancerous and pre-cancerous condi-tions. You may have a very small,but dangerous, oral spot or sore andnot be aware of it.

Your dentist will carefully examinethe inside of your mouth andtongue and in some patients maynotice a flat, painless, white or redspot or a small sore. Although mostof these are harmless, some are not.Harmful oral spots or sores oftenlook identical to those that areharmless, but testing can tell themapart. If you have a sore with a

likely cause, your dentist may treat it and ask you to return for re-examination.

Dentists often will notice a spot orsore that looks harmless and doesnot have a clear cause. To ensurethat a spot or sore is not dangerous,your dentist may choose to performa simple test, such as a brush test. Abrush test collects cells from a suspicious lesion in the mouth. The cells are sent to a laboratory foranalysis. If precancerous cellsare found, the lesion can be surgically removed if necessary during a separate procedure. Itsimportant to know that all atypicaland positive results from a brush testmust be confirmed by incisionalbiopsy and histology.

Facts About Oral CancerIncidence and Mortality

Oral cancer strikes an estimated 34,360Americans each year. An estimated 7,550 people(5,180 men and 2,370 women) will die of thesecancers in 2007. More than 25% of the 30,000 Americans whoget oral cancer will die of the disease. On average, only half of those diagnosed withthe disease will survive more than five years. African-Americans are especially vulnerable; theincidence rate is 1/3 higher than whites and themortality rate is almost twice as high.

Risk Factors

Although the use of tobacco and alcohol are riskfactors in developing oral cancer, approximately25% of oral cancer patients have no known risk

factors. There has been a nearly five-fold increase inincidence in oral cancer patientsunder age 40, many with no known risk factors. The incidence of oral cancer in women hasincreased significantly, largely due toan increase in women smoking. In 1950 the maleto female ratio was 6:1; by 2002, it was 2:1.

Prevention and Detection

The best way to prevent oral cancer is to avoidtobacco and alcohol use. Regular dental check-ups, including an examina-tion of the entire mouth, areessential in the early detection of cancerous andpre-cancerous conditions. Many types of abnormal cells can develop in theoral cavity in the form of red orwhite spots. Some are harmless and benign, someare cancerous and others are pre-cancerous,meaning they can develop into cancer if notdetected early and removed. (American CancerSociety) Finding and removing epithelial dysplasiasbefore they become cancer can be one of the mosteffective methods for reducing the incidence ofcancer. Knowing the risk factors and seeing your dentistfor oral cancer screenings can help prevent thisdeadly disease. Routine use of the Pap smear since1955, for example, dramatically reduced the inci-dence and mortality rates for cervical cancer in theUnited States. Oral cancer is often preceded by the presence ofclinically identifiable premalignant changes. Theselesions may present as either white or red patchesor spots. Identifying white and red spots that showdysplasia and removing them before they becomecancer is an effective method for reducing the inci-dence and mortality of cancer.

What If? (The Supreme Courts Rulingon Same-Sex Marriage)

As you may be aware, the UnitedStates Supreme Court recentlyheard arguments in a case that willdetermine if state laws prohibitingsame-sex marriage are unconstitu-tional. Louisiana and twelve otherstates have laws that define marriage as a relationship betweentwo people of the opposite sex. Adecision in the case is expected inJune of this year. If the courtdoes find the prohibitions unconstitutional and same-sexcouples are allowed to marry inLouisiana (or if Louisiana mustrecognize same-sex marriagesfrom other states), it will drastical-ly change property and estate

planning laws here. While a complete description of all of thechanges is beyond the scope ofthis article, here are a few of themost important implications.

Louisianas community propertylaws provide that most thingsacquired by either spouse duringthe marriage are community property. Community propertyform of ownership provides extraprotections that joint ownershipdoes not provide. For instance, ifa married couple owns a hometogether and one dies without awill, the surviving spouse has aright to occupy the house untildeath or remarriage. Also, anowner of community propertycannot transfer his or her interestwithout the consent of the otherspouse. These types of protections are not available tojoint owners, such as non-married,same-sex couples.

Another important area based onthe marriage relationship arises inthe context of making health caredecisions. A spouse is the firstperson allowed to make thosedecisions when the other spousecannot. Currently, unmarriedsame-sex couples do not have theright to make health care decisionsfor each other absent a health care

power of attorney. If married,these couples would also havethese rights.

Marriage, however, will not affectthe right to make financial decisions as the law does not currently provide that a spouse hasthe right to make financial decisions for the other spouse ifhe or she is incapable of doing so.Therefore, regardless of whetherthe law changes or not, all mar-ried couples should have a powerof attorney allowing their spouseto make financial decisions if theybecome incapacitated (assumingof course that they want theirspouse to serve in this role).

Rights with regard to children willalso be affected. Louisiana lawnow provides that the survivingspouse becomes the natural tutor(guardian) of all children of themarriage. Under current law, thesurviving spouse of a same-sexcouple in Louisiana would notautomatically become the naturaltutor of the couples children.Instead, the other biological parent would become the natural tutor.

Finally, estate planning needed bysame-sex, married couples will alsobe affected. However, it definitelywill not mean that these couplesdont need to plan since they aremarried. Louisianas currentintestate laws that apply to opposite sex, married couples generally do not provide what

spouses want. Rather, Louisianaslaws often favor the children overthe spouse and leave the survivingspouse without full control overthe property that was acquired bythe couple during their marriage.Further, when a married coupledoes not have children, all separate property of a deceasedspouse passes to the deceasedssiblings (with a usufruct to thedeceaseds parents, if any) insteadof to the surviving spouse. As you can see, most married couples, whether of the same ordifferent genders, will want toplan to avoid Louisianas intestate order of succession.

As you can see, if the SupremeCourt rules that Louisianas prohibition against same-sex marriage is invalid and same-sexmarriages are allowed inLouisiana, many laws dealing withproperty ownership and estateplanning will be affected.However, regardless of the out-come, married couples of all genders should consult with anexperienced estate planning attorney to make sure that theirspouse will be protected in themanner they choose if theybecome disabled or die.

Boats wouldleave from Hill Top or Canal Bankand return for food and dance.Ronnie Braud told me on year two

sister caught a ride with him and thenext year they were waiting on thebank at Hill Top waiting for theirride. He also told me of a morningwhen 8 Grandmothers dressed in

long white dresses. They wantedto be the first at the chapel tobless it. He said he could take 4 ofthem. They insisted all 8 were riding in his boat. When the priestwalked out on the pier they said,Lets go, the priest could ride inthe second boat.After the event grew and grew it

moved to different locations ofHill Top, Canal Bank and Bayviewwhich ever location was availableand not flooded from high water.Some 30 years a Fred Boyd

stepped in and offered Freds onthe River as a yearly location tohost the popular event that has

grown in to the great success it is today.This years event was another

success. Everyone enjoyed thegreat food, music, and dancing.The event would not be a possiblewithout the many volunteers who work extremely hard toaccommodate our seniors. Also,the many businesses in the areawho donated food and supplies makes Senior Day the event of the year. We hope to see youagain next year.The second Thursday in

May. Well be doing it again.

Dont you just love it whenyoure in a hurry on the inter-state and the car in front of youis traveling a very safe 5-10miles per hour under the speedlimit and just will not allow youto pass? They know yourebehind them. You can see themeyeballing you from their mir-rors, but they refuse to veer tothe right lane for even a secondto allow you to pass. Theirarrogance to stay where they arerather than consider that wemay have an emergency forcesus to find a way around them.

Or, what about the grocerystore? We run in needing topick up just a few items, so itshouldnt take long, but theisles are blocked by a group ofpeople either chatting about oldtimes or organizing their shop-ping list. Try as we may, thereis no way to maneuver a cartthrough or around them.Rather than step to the side toallow shoppers to pass, they stayput forcing shoppers to find analternate route. Is it deliberateor do they not realize theyveinconvenienced 50 other shop-pers?

As a community we were willing to be considerate to theneeds of our friends and neighbors. We check on themand ask them about the eventsin their life, but as a communitygrows and fills with strangefaces maybe we feel we donthave the same obligation tothose we dont know. Eitherway, intentional or unintention-al, continuity is achieved whencourtesy is shown by all of us.

A year had come and gone andit was once again time for theannual East Ascension Sportsman'sLeague Saltwater Challenge atGrand Isle. It was a mad dash toleave a very stressful job at noonon the Thursday before theupcoming events scheduled forSaturday. Eventually everythingcame together and we were headed south at last. After arrivingat the weekend campsite, weunloaded the truck and I decidedto do some crabbing and fishingalone that evening. The crabs wererunning good and I caught a fewsmall fish. The weather was beautiful and all of a sudden it hitme how different this situation wascompared to what I had leftbehind six hours ago. Around darkI returned to the campsite to min-gle with the rest of the crew and

enjoy life. I soon noticed thefamiliar signs of white and speckled trout action underneaththe pier lights. The weather forecast for the next couple of dayswas not good at all. So eventhough I was tired I decided thatif I wanted to catch fish I betternot pass up this chance. In aboutan hour and a half I managed tobox about twenty white trout anda couple of keeper specks.

The weather the next morningwas right on cue with the predic-tion. It was horrible. My daughterand I survived several bad stormsand managed to catch a couple offish. Then the weather got com-pletely out of hand and chasedeveryone on the water to shelter.This continued all day. At somepoint my fishing partner for thenext day and I decided to attempt

crabbing. Just hanging around thecamp and watching the rain wasdriving us crazy. The lightning andrain would sometimes stop for fifteen or twenty minutes. Duringthose lulls in the weather wewould run from the truck andcatch a few crabs before the nextline of storms came about.Somehow we managed to catch amess of crabs and above all had ablast. The weather finally clearedup nicely for the tournament sign-in activities around the camp laterthat evening. The event included afirst class jambalaya cooked byCharlie Moore, plenty of refresh-ing beverages and the opportunityto enjoy life with family and special friends.

Four-o-clock the next morningcame much too soon and it wasobvious from the minute that Iawoke that Mother Nature wasgoing to show her dark side onthis day. My fishing partner,Bobby Depew, was sitting on theporch drinking a cup of coffee. Isoon joined him and in the midstof the lightning, thunder, windand rain we came up with a tour-nament game plan for the day.Since the trolling motor for mysmall bateau had broken the daybefore and the weather just suckedso much, we decided to fishbridges, culverts, riffraff and cutsoff the side of the road.

The weather allowed aboutthirty minutes to fish at our firststop. I lost a nice flounder at thatplace and I knew from deep insidethat I would not get many moreopportunities as a terrible stormran us back to the truck. We madeanother move and got to fishunsuccessfully for about ten minutes before the next round ofviolent weather came. I'm tellingyou it was about as bad as it couldget and lasted about four hoursbefore I noticed a lighter sky tothe west. We had just a couple ofhours to fish so anticipation wasrunning high. I caught a couple ofsmall fish on live cocaho minnowsand then it happened. I hookedand fought a redfish that I knewwould probably win the fish under27" division if I could only get itin. The terrible storm had createda massive tide flow through theculvert we were fishing near.Somehow my fish got caught upin that current and I lost him.Another chance for us to win hadjust slipped away. About ten minutes later I hooked and lost

another fish after about a fiveminute battle. I was getting frustrated with the situation anddiscussing it with my partner whenhis cork suddenly disappeared.Shortly after he set the hook alarge gar fish ( approximately sixtypounds) rose to the top and tookoff. He took off for good, hook,line, cork and sinker. He thenswam in front of us with the corkin tow as if to only add to ouranger. That fish could have wonthe "other fish" division, but we'dmade too many mistakes on thatday to be successful. You normallydo not win in any competition ifyou cannot capitalize on all theopportunities that come about.

We finally made it back to campand began to prepare for theweigh-in, supper, music playingand camaraderie that goes alongwith this type of event. I openedup my ice chest and grabbed acold beer from it. I then noticedthat the can had an ice cube stuckto it. I removed the ice cube andpitched it into the sunlit yard. Ibegan to stare at the ice cube andalthough it doesn't have a livinglife in reality, it still has a life tosome extent. As I stared at thecube I began to realize the resemblance of certain situations inour life compared to something assimple as a melting ice cube.Things such as a stressful job thatI'd left three days before willsomeday dissipate. All the wonder-ful people that I'd spent the weekend with won't be here forever. The chance to win a fishing rodeo and watch it slowlyslip away from you with everymissed opportunity resembles themelting cube of ice. Our lives andthe things we do in our lives are inmany ways no different than an icecube melting in the sun. In reality,it's all melting away.....

began around 2009 and wasconnected by their love of thesame style of music. Who is that guy with Danny Robert?Ive been living in Ascension

Parish for a long time. Ive seen usgrow and expand. Ive watched usprosper and grow. Thousands ofpeople are migrating our way.Increasingly I find myself enjoyinghanging out and listening to oldschool Ascension citizens thatremember the gravel roads andtales of Light Lane.As I roam around the parish tak-

ing photos and visiting events I seelots and lots of people. From timeto time there is this guy that I seethat seems to be everywhere. Ithink I know him. I should knowhim, so I say, Hey Bru, when hewalks by. I started getting curious and

came across Bama at the PelicanPub. Hey Bama. Who is that guythat helped cook at The Feed theNeedy fundraiser? I asked.Which guy? The guy that whenyou see him Danny Robert seemsto be not to far away. He lookedat me with a smile and said, Yea

I know him, Hecooks withDannyRobert in

jambalaya cooking contest. He is uh, uh, starts with aK. Crap its on the tip of mytongue, Kurt. Thats it, Kurt.Can he cook? I asked. Uh, uh?Im sure he can cook something.Grits arent that hard to do. giggled Bama. Danny did say hecan chop wood like a wood chuckcould chop wood. Bama told mealso that Danny holds him to twobeers during the cooking contest.

I did find out later that this waspartially true. Danny allows him tohave a beer only after the rice has

been put in the pot. Bama alsomention Kurt claimed to haveDannys stirring padel from theChampionship year at Feed theNeedy and was trying to sell it for $20 or a 12 pack of beer. Any brand.It turns out Kurt is friends with

brother-in-laws Danny Robert andJodi Elisar. Its rumored one nightwhen Danny and Jodi were discussing cooking in theJambalaya Festival contest. Notwanting to hurt Kurts feelingsand leaving him out they invitedhim to cook with one of them.Danny looked at Jodi and said,You take him. No! You takehim Jodi said. They finally decided to draw straws and Dannylost. Now Kurt is on team Danny.

Last week I went to SacsWestern Store for some dog foodand ran into Gay, Dannys wife. Iasked if she knew Kurt? Yea. Kurtcomes around about once a yeararound festival time. I see him outby the barn with Danny. Most ofthe time he dresses in the sameshirt as my husband. I sometimeswonder if they may have a bromance going on?It has been really interesting

researching this Kurt guy. I contacted Jodi Elisar for a comment and found out a thatKurt has a heavenly connection.

This is what he wrote me:

Kurt & I would always go fishing in and around the localarea mainly behind the Mississippilevee & interstate ponds. One daywe were fishing in a local Interstatepond and we parked his truck in arather tight, wet & soggy spot. Ihad some concern that we were notgoing to get out of this, but heassured me it wasnt wet enough toget stuck, besides we had fish tocatch and we would worry aboutthat later. We fished for most of theday and it was time to load up thesmall aluminum batto in the backof his truck.

I could see this was not going tobe good, because by now the truckhad sunk to the axle and he hadnteven tried to get out yet. So now itwas time for him to see if he couldmaneuver his way out of this sinkhole we were in. After removing mytennis shoes, I began pushing thefront pumper in mud knee deepwhile he spins the tires. After tryingto go forwards & backwards forover 30 minutes and fully exhausted he figures he can pushharder, as I feared, we were stillstuck, and bad. After a small silent prayer and

asking God to please get us out ofthis situation I knew the only way toget help was to walk along theInterstate to the next exit and gethelp. After a lengthy discussion andno cell phone, we decided to leavethe truck, boat, fish and tacklebehind and go find some help. Kurtalways wore high top shoes everywhere we went and this daywas no different, but he knows theyare muddy and he has to leave hishigh tops behind. We started our long trip walking

on the shoulder of I-10 both of usbarefoot, Im praying the wholetime that we dont get run over byspeeding cars & that we get to theexit before sundown to call ourwives and get help. Kurt was praying for other things like he hopesno one steals our tackle and our fish, but most of all how was he ever going to get his high tops clean again.After some time walking, we

came across a brand new Nike

high top shoe (Kurts size) and bothof us laughed and said that wouldsomething if we found the other shoe.Sure enough, the other shoe was 10yards away from the first one wehad just found. It seemed Kirt hadhis prayers answered and now ifmine could be, we would both behappy. Well, we made it to safetyand was able to get help. Weretrieved the truck, boat, fish andour tackle. Before getting his truckto where we could enter the inter-state he showed his gratitude andplaced his muddy High tops on theside the Interstate and place them asthough he would give back to the shoeGod who provided for him and thatsomeday, someone would be in needhis shoes. We fried the fish that night with

our wives while Kurt sported hisnew high tops that God had givenhim on this very eventful day !!!

Finally after interviewing theseso called friends. I went straight toDanny. I must admit I was startingto feel a little sorry for the guy.

After about an hour visit. Dannycouldnt really find many positivecooking qualities. Kurt was goodat chopping wood, cutting onionsand being a goffer. Go for this andgo for that. He did mention he is aaccident waiting to happen. Heonce lost his tooth in a pasture andthat was as close as he has evergotten to a horse. Also he musthave a little vampire in himbecause every time he touches agarlic press he is going to break it.Not just one but everyone hetouches. Danny keeps two in hiscooking supply box just in casethese days.

In the end it is apparent to methat this guy is well liked andfriends with many. You have to beloved to receive and accept theabuse his friends press on him.Kurt told me Im not sure what

I am doing here. The year Dannyand I won the Championship, Iwas in charge of the fire along withall my other medial chores and everytime Id move a hot coal in,Danny would come around andmove it out. I guess he knewsomething I didnt because wewon the World Jambalaya CookingChampionship in 2012. He gotthe trophy and Ive been labeled ashis helper ever since.In reality, with all fun aside,

Danny told he loves cooking withKurt and wouldnt change it forthe world. But also hes afraid noone else would pick him up.
