When it comes to Machine Embroidery, a better foundation equals better registration...When it comes to Machine Embroidery, a better foundation equals better registration. Ok, that sounds simple enough, but determining how much and what kind of foundation or stabilizer to use can pose pretty big questions.

Let’s start with a couple of basic rules. 1. Always cover the entire hoop surface with stabilizer; this will ensure 360 degree stabilization. 2. Use the smallest hoop in relation to the design size. This is especially important when there is a lot of fill stitch with satin stitch borders.

There are many choices today so let’s focus on a few basic must haves and then some great specialty items. • Cutaway-Useonnon-stablestretchyfabrics.Amusthaveitem. • Tearaway-Useontowels,denim,wovenfabrics;allstable,non-stretchfabrics.Anothermusthaveitem. • WashorSteamaway-Thisisgreatforlaceorfreestandingembroidery. • Topper-usedanytimethereisapileonyourfabricliketowels,fleece,etc.Thisproductisplacedor hooped on top to capture and keep the pile from poking up through your stitches. • StickyorFusible-greatforthehardtohoopitems.Thesestabilizersuseadhesiveorheattoadhere to the fabric.

Of course there are numerous variations to these five, each of them having a more tailored approach to certain projects. Sometimes you’ll have better results if a combination of stabilizers are used at the same time. Our trained staff can always help in making these choices. If you ever have trouble, feel free to bring in your project and we can recommend the best product for you.

Also keep in mind that design quality is a very big factor in the end result. A well digitized design should cover fabric without the stitches stacking up so much that it becomes “bullet proof”, nor so sparse that the fabric is showing through. It should also have underlay stitches that “tack” the fabric to the backing before stitching. My best advice is to stick with the reputable design companies and attend our hands on events and classes. The more experience you have, the easier it gets.

As always, never sew with a “mushy” bobbin, always thread with the presser foot up and always keep your needle fresh.

with Jim Kelleher
