Penance--Prayer as the People of God Did you know that doing penance is part and parcel of the
Catholic faith? What are some of your penitential practices? Do you have anybody for whom you offer those penances regularly? For example, Archbishop Sample offers his Wed. penance for the laity of the Archdiocese and his Friday penance for the priests. I believe he fasts for us on those days.
In 1983, the revised Code of Canon Law (The treasury of our tradition.) was put into effect. It reaffirmed the Catholic teaching on penance, especially on Fridays. I’ve underlined for emphasis.
“Can. 1249 The divine law binds all the Christian faithful to do penance each in his or her own way. In order for all to be united among themselves by some common observance of penance, however, penitential days are prescribed on which the Christian faithful devote themselves in a special way to prayer, perform works of piety and charity, and deny themselves by fulfilling their own obligations more faithfully and especially by observing fast and abstinence, according to the norm of the following canons. Can. 1250 The penitential days and times in the universal Church are every Friday of the whole year and the season of Lent. Can. 1251 Abstinence from meat, or from some other food as determined by the Episcopal Conference, is to be observed on all Fridays, unless a solemnity should fall on a Friday. Abstinence and fasting are to be observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.”
The USA “the Episcopal Conference” determined in 1966 that in order to give greater vitality to the penitential character of Friday, Friday abstinence from meat could be substituted for another penitential practice or act of charity, though they wrote, “We give first place to abstinence from flesh meat.”
Legalism is never the goal of our faith: we don’t want to have empty actions like the Pharisees. Jesus continually challenged the Pharisee’s to rediscover the Spirit of the Law, but he also told his disciples to follow the letter of the law as well as the Pharisees did. Canon Law reflects this when Can. 1252 reminds us that the law of abstinence from meat binds anyone 14 years old or older (note, no ending limit) while the laws of fasting bind anyone from 18-60 years old. Beautifully it adds, “Pastors of souls and parents are to ensure that even those who by reason of their age are not bound by the law of fasting and abstinence, are taught the true meaning of penance.” That true meaning is spoken of by the bishops in the first paragraphs of there letter regarding our repentance/penitence.
The true meaning of penance includes uniting our sufferings to those of Christ for the good of others, both the living and the dead. As St. Paul says, “Now I rejoice in what was suffered for you, and I fill up in my flesh what is still lacking in regard to Christ's afflictions, for the sake of his body, which is the church” (Col. 1:24). I find penance much easier when I have someone to think of at the difficult moments.
Ideally, by doing penance we remember and repent of our sinfulness so that we avoid sin in the future and trust more fully in God’s infinite mercy. It can also help us become more selfless as we convert our sufferings into offerings to Jesus for the good of others.

Francis Friends Francis Friends is a light lunch meant to bring all
parishioners together to build community through social time and food after praying together at the noon mass on the
third Thursday of every month. This ministry runs on volunteer time & resources and monetary donations. Any

Two Feet, One Voice: Building a Home for All was the theme for the 2019 Social Action Summer Institute (SASI) that was held at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, UT in July, 2019. Three Ascension Parishioners attended along with 8 others from our Archdiocese. SASI 2019’s theme reflected this year’s emphasis on giving voice and fostering systemic change for people experiencing homelessness or statelessness. Bishop Oscar Solis from the Diocese of Salt Lake City welcomed participants at the opening Mass stating, "We come here in response to the mandate of Christ to put our faith into action according to the spirit of the Gospel. We are aware of the sacred responsibility to promote, protect, and uphold the sanctity of life from the moment of conception until death."

Los próximos bautizos serán el 12 y 13 de octubre
durante las misas de español. El sábado 12 de
octubre son a las 7:00pm y el domingo 13 de octubre
a las 12:30pm. Si usted está interesado en bautizar su niño o niña menor de 6 años puede pasar a la oficina y registrarse. También puede pedir la forma de registración los domingos en la Mesa de Información y Bienvenida, y ya cuando la haya llenado solamente puede pasar a entregarla a la oficina entre 9am y 3pm de martes a viernes. SACRAMENTOS
Personas mayores de 18 años que todavía no tienen sus sacramentos de bautizo, Primera Comunión y Confirmación, estamos registrando para todos estos sacramentos. Las clases son los martes de 7:00pm a 8:15pm. Pueden registrarse durante las horas de oficina de martes a viernes de 9:00am a 3:00pm
Penitencia - La oración como pueblo de Dios ¿Sabías que hacer penitencia es parte integrante de la fe católica? ¿Cuáles son algunas de tus prácticas penitenciales? ¿Tienes a alguien a quien le ofreces esas penitencias regularmente? Por ejemplo, el Arzobispo Sample ofrece su Penitencia los miércoles a los laicos de la Arquidiócesis y su penitencia de los viernes por los sacerdotes. Creo que también ayuna por nosotros en esos días.
En 1983, se puso en vigencia el Código de Derecho Canónico revisado (El tesoro de nuestra tradición). Reafirmó la enseñanza católica sobre la penitencia, especialmente los viernes. He subrayado para enfatizar.
"Can. 1249 La ley divina obliga a todos los fieles cristianos a hacer penitencia cada uno a su manera. Sin embargo, para que todos se unan entre sí mediante una observación común de la penitencia, se prescriben días penitenciales en los que los fieles cristianos se dedican de manera especial a la oración, realizan obras de piedad y caridad, y se niegan a sí mismos cumpliendo sus propios obligaciones más fielmente y especialmente al hacer ayuno y la abstinencia, de acuerdo con la norma de los siguientes cánones. Can. 1250 Los días penitenciales y horarios en la Iglesia universal son todos los viernes de todo el año y la temporada de Cuaresma. Can. 1251 La abstinencia de carne, o de algún otro alimento según lo determinado por la Conferencia Episcopal, debe observarse todos los viernes, a menos que una solemnidad caiga un viernes. La abstinencia y el ayuno deben observarse el Miércoles de Ceniza y el Viernes Santo". La "Conferencia Episcopal" de EE. UU. Determinó en 1966 que para dar mayor vitalidad al carácter penitencial del viernes, la abstinencia de carne del viernes podría ser sustituida por otra práctica penitencial o acto de caridad, aunque escribieron: "Le damos el primer lugar a abstinencia de carne".
El legalismo nunca es el objetivo de nuestra fe: no queremos tener acciones vacías como los fariseos. Jesús continuamente desafió a los fariseos a redescubrir el Espíritu de la Ley, pero también les dijo a sus discípulos que siguieran la letra de la ley tan bien como lo hicieron los fariseos. La ley canónica refleja esto cuando Can. 1252 nos recuerda que la ley de la abstinencia de la carne obliga a cualquier persona de 14 años o más (nota, sin límite final) mientras que las leyes del ayuno obligan a cualquier persona de 18 a 60 años. Bellamente agrega: "Los pastores de las almas y los padres deben asegurarse de que incluso aquellos que, por razón de su edad, no están obligados por la ley del ayuno y la abstinencia, se les enseña el verdadero significado de la penitencia." Los obispos hablan de ese verdadero significado en los primeros párrafos de su carta sobre nuestro arrepentimiento / penitencia.
El verdadero significado de la penitencia incluye unir nuestros sufrimientos a los de Cristo por el bien de los demás, tanto los vivos como los muertos. Como dice San Pablo: "Ahora me regocijo por lo que padezco por vosotros, y lleno en mi carne lo que aún falta con respecto a las aflicciones de Cristo, por el bien de su cuerpo, que es la iglesia" (Col. 1:24). Encuentro que la penitencia es mucho más fácil cuando tengo a alguien en quien pensar en los momentos difíciles.
Idealmente, al hacer penitencia recordamos y nos arrepentimos de nuestra pecaminosidad para evitar el pecado en el futuro y confiar más plenamente en la infinita misericordia de Dios. También puede ayudarnos a ser más desinteresados al convertir nuestros sufrimientos en ofrendas a Jesús por el bien de los demás. Bendiciones para todos nosotros mientras trabajamos para traer mayor
vitalidad a nuestras prácticas penitenciales este año, especialmente los viernes.

Cuarto viernes del mes, nuestra misa diaria es en la hermosa e histórica Capilla en el Centro de Cuidados
St. Andrew a las 11 am. Ingrese por la puerta en el SE 76th Ave.
